Relay 2.2.2 maintains the supported 2.x plugin for Claude Code. It builds on 2.2.1's per-job Codex output budgets.
User-visible changes
Jobs start when Claude loads the plugin through a symlink. The guard compares resolved paths at hook entry and when validating the companion command.
A relay delivers coordinator, peer and human messages, including text alongside a tool result. Task notifications stay out. The relay records unsupported origins. A cancelled job drops its claim on an unstarted brief, including when resumed later.
A backend ignoring EOF receives SIGTERM after 50 ms and SIGKILL around five seconds after close starts. Cleanup waits up to another five seconds. The worker retains the identity of a surviving server for the next sweep.
Grok, ZCode and Kimi reviews accept any file count within their 256 KiB inline repository-context limit. Accounting includes section text, rendered paths and decoded contents. Reviews omit untracked symlink targets.
Codex developer instructions distinguish history retention, the outer code-mode output limit and the nested command limit. They explain how to request more output or read the missing ranges.
Grok jobs supply a default 262,144-byte MCP cap when the environment, managed policy, home and project leave it unset. Setup warns on a read-only profile refusal and preserves its existing readiness and exit-code meanings.
Verification
The validation record describes the regressions and the revisions on which live tests ran. On the candidate before the latest follow-ups, macOS passed 647 tests with one skip. Linux CI ran on Node 22 and 24. Cross-running the 2.2.1 tests on that candidate passed 627, skipped one and failed eight assertions that expected the old instructions, file-count limit or setup probes.
Claude Code 2.1.316 previously exercised real jobs on all four backends, ordinary fan-out, dynamic Workflow returns and peer/coordinator delivery. With the symlinked plugin, 2.2.1 failed to start a job and the candidate returned its report. The follow-ups add regressions for project and managed MCP caps, review symlinks and a multi-file context exactly at the byte limit. On 5465c80, Linux CI passed all 648 tests and type checking on both Node 22 and 24. The macOS run passed 647 with one Linux-only skip. Version consistency, whitespace and both plugin manifests also passed. Final CI run.
On 3 November the final candidate ran live on macOS with Claude Code 2.1.317, loaded through a symlinked plugin folder: one read-only relay:job per backend (Codex, Grok, ZCode, Kimi) returned its exact token with one hand-back each, and a Grok inline review of four working-tree entries found the planted defect while naming an untracked symlink without reading its target. A typed human interruption in the TUI and a real Grok MCP result above 20,000 bytes are covered by tests, not observed live. Short Codex probes establish that the outer pragma can recover a missing middle. They do not establish that the model will use it on every call.
Integration
The original commits from #57 (plugin path) and #59 (output limits) are included. Both PRs are closed. Preserve their history with a merge commit after final review and release validation.
Original consolidation by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, with review by GPT-6 Astra through Relay. Finalized by Claude Opus 5.5.
2.x is the final Relay line and takes bug fixes only.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Relay reviews can cover more than two files when the serialized review context stays within 256 KiB.
Relay now delivers messages from coordinators, peer agents, and people.
Grok jobs use a 256 KiB MCP output limit by default when no override is configured.
Bug Fixes
Improved backend shutdown handling, including escalation when a process does not exit and clearer timeout reporting.
Fixed cancelled jobs being incorrectly queued for a first turn and improved handling of plugin paths reached through symlinks.
Grok setup now warns when its read-only profile is refused.
Documentation
Added Relay 2.2.2 validation notes and guidance on harness output limits.
Updated the documented review-size limit and instructions for retrieving truncated command output.
When Claude Code installs the plugin through a symlinked config folder, it runs the hook and the relay
names the companion through the symlink, while Node gives the hook module its real path. The hook's
entry check then never ran main(), and start --from-relay failed with 'the hook did not run'. Both the
entry check and the companion match now compare paths with symlinks resolved.

What each harness Relay runs does to a large tool result, measured on 30 October 2026 with a
synthetic file carrying random start, middle and end markers, and what Relay can change: Codex
(handled in 2.2.1), Grok Build, ZCode and Kimi Code. scripts/tool-output-probe.mjs writes the
probe file for checks after a harness upgrade.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…f stays cancelled
- A queued or user entry from another agent or a person reaches the job. Only the
parent's did; the others were dropped with no problem recorded. A task notification
stays out, and any other origin is now reported rather than lost.
- A backend that ignores EOF and SIGTERM gets SIGKILL within a bounded time, and one that
survives that is given up on, so worker cleanup no longer waits forever.
- A worker that arrives after a job was cancelled no longer runs its brief.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…rected limits
- Reviews on Grok, ZCode and Kimi take any number of files within 256 KiB.
- Codex's instructions say a nested max_output_tokens alone leaves the 10,000-token cap,
to read large evidence by range, and to read what a truncation names.
- Grok jobs get a larger MCP budget unless the environment or the home names one.
- Setup warns when Grok refuses its read-only profile.
- A job cancelled before its first turn loses its claim on the brief as soon as a worker
sees it, so a later resume cannot run it. A process that survives SIGKILL is not
recorded as ended, so its late exit cannot write to a job another worker owns, and the
next sweep still finds it.
- The harness limits document is corrected against the installed versions and source.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…s refusal check
- A Grok home's `[mcp] max_output_bytes` is recognised with a commented or spaced
header, a quoted or dotted key, or an inline table, so Relay's default cannot
override it.
- Setup's read-only warning needs Grok's own refusal words, not any error that
mentions a sandbox, and no longer says that write mode runs, which it does not check.
- The changelog says the probe writes a marker file; it does not measure anything.
- Tests pinned to the two-file limit and to one `grok models` call follow the release.

Walkthrough
Relay 2.2.2 changes review-context sizing, harness output handling, cancellation and backend shutdown, transcript parsing, and symlink path checks. The release also updates package metadata and documentation, adds a validation record and output probe, and removes Claude Code Mod planning documents.
Grok, ZCode, and Kimi reviews use a 256 KiB serialized-context limit instead of a two-file limit. Git collection preserves filenames and skips symbolic links and non-regular files.
Grok receives a default MCP output budget when no applicable configuration sets one. Setup checks the read-only profile and reports a refusal. Codex instructions cover nested output limits and truncated results.
Cancelled jobs clear pendingFirstTurn. Backend shutdown escalates through SIGTERM and SIGKILL, records close timeouts, and abandons processes that remain alive.
Transcript parsing and symlink paths plugins/relay/scripts/lib/harness/relay.mjs, plugins/relay/scripts/hooks/relay-guard.mjs, tests/relay-guard.test.mjs
Transcript parsing accepts coordinator, peer, and human messages and reports unsupported origins. The command guard resolves real paths for symlinked plugin execution.
Release metadata and project records .claude-plugin/marketplace.json, package.json, plugins/relay/.claude-plugin/plugin.json, plugins/relay/CHANGELOG.md, README.md, AGENTS.md, docs/relay-2.2.2-validation.md, docs/mods/*
Package and plugin metadata use version 2.2.2. Release records document the changes and validation. Obsolete Claude Code Mod planning documents are removed.
The release documentation and maintenance-policy updates present no identified blocker to merging. This assessment does not independently certify the broader runtime changes.

…a tool result
- An untracked file's name counts toward the inline limit. The two-file limit was
what kept names from growing a prompt, so many empty or binary files could pass
256 KiB while measuring zero.
- Untracked files are listed with `ls-files -z`. Git quotes a non-ASCII name otherwise,
and the file's contents were left out of the review.
- A typed message that shares its entry with a tool result reaches the job. A
tool-result entry with no text stays out.
- The test of a process that survives SIGKILL holds the event loop while it waits for
the exit: `close` unrefs that process, so a quiet loop ended the test file.

Preserve project-scoped MCP output caps.
When a trusted project sets [mcp] max_output_bytes = 1024 in .grok/config.toml and the home config has no cap, grokEnvironment() injects GROK_MAX_MCP_OUTPUT_BYTES=262144. Grok gives that environment variable precedence over the project value, so the project cap is not preserved. Check the effective project configuration before injecting the default.

Report cleanup timeouts after completed turns.
If the backend survives SIGKILL during the final connection.close(), the worker can return the job as completed without recording the cleanup failure. The attempt-level server record remains open, and a later worker can sweep it, but a terminal cancel does not start that sweep. Persist or report the closeTimedOut cleanup failure so the completed job does not hide a surviving backend process.
