feat(mcp): show a rig's hosted members on its team, and how a member works its rows - #2095
A tool that lives outside a terminal (an assistant, a chat bot, a cloud routine) can work as a member of your team, and the team can see it.
Most of this already works through OpenRig's MCP server:
you address rows to <member>@<rig>;
under a grant (rig mcp token add <name> --seat <member>@<rig> --rig <rig>), the tool reaches rig mcp serve --http as that seat;
it lists its rows, claims one, and answers it with a resolution or a handoff;
a new conversation reaches the same work, and revoking the grant refuses its next call while its rows stay.
The missing piece was the team view. rig_team read only node inventory, so a member with no pane disappeared. This change:
A roster entry can say it's hosted ("hosted": true, an optional authored field). rig roster show and find then say the member is hosted rather than unmatched.
rig_team lists a rig's hosted members. These are roster entries marked hosted, on this host, whose seat is in the rig and isn't one of its nodes. A node not launched yet still counts as a seat. Each comes with its authored capabilities and caveat (its limits), no pane, and activity unknown. OpenRig doesn't observe it between calls, so it never reads idle. A roster folder or file that can't be read, or a host id that isn't known yet, gives hostedMembersNote, never "no members". The note stays generic, so a scoped caller doesn't see other rosters' names or errors; the detail goes to the server's log.
The server's instructions say how a member works rows addressed to it (a new last line): list with owned, claim before working, then answer with a resolution or a handoff. Listing or reading a row doesn't take it. The installed scenario's stdio check now pins five lines, through an exported verifyInstructions.
A reference page, "Hosted members", gives the recipe (address, roster entry, grant, HTTP behind TLS, the tool's connector), the facts the record keeps apart (wake, pickup, result, notification), revocation, and today's limits. The rosters page links to it.
No new refusal or required step, and no change to grants, scope or the HTTP server.
Cost
packages/cli/src/mcp-server.ts (+57/−4): a hostedMembersOf helper, rig_team's hosted members and description, one instruction line, and an optional rostersFolder option for tests. rig_team also reads /healthz for this host's id when no node carries it.
packages/cli/src/commands/roster.ts (+10/−4): the optional hosted field, and its "hosted, no pane" reason.
packages/test-system/ci/mcp-stdio.mjs (+10/−3): the instruction pin, five lines through verifyInstructions.
Docs: hosted-members.md (new, 54 lines) and a pointer in rosters.md.
Tests (+122):
an end-to-end case over real HTTP against real daemon routes: a lead hands a row to grok@team, which lists, claims and answers it as its grant's seat; a new connection reaches the same work; rig_team shows the member; revoke refuses the next call while the row and answer stay;
a unit case: only entries marked hosted, on this host, in this rig and not a node are listed (a stale entry and a node not launched yet aren't); an unreadable roster file or folder, and an unknown host id, give a note without other rosters' details;
the roster's hosted flag: kept, type-checked, and reported.
Proof
On main's code with the first version's tests, exactly the two new cases fail, at hostedMembers (undefined). On main, the end-to-end case already gets through list, claim, answer and re-entry; only the team view is missing.
On the first version's code with the current tests, exactly the two changed cases fail:
rig_team lists the stale entry and the not-yet-launched node as hosted;
the roster drops hosted;
the instruction pin fails on the old line order.
At this head, in a Linux container:
build and lint pass;
the CLI's test/mcp* and test/roster* pass 101 of 101;
the instruction pin passes against the built CLI's stdio server (5 lines).
The full installed scenario builds a Docker testbed, so it runs in hosted CI.
Not run: any native client. A real tool reaching the server through a public HTTPS route is a separate trial.
Team listings now include hosted roster members for the current rig and host, showing their capabilities and noting that they have no pane and unknown activity.
Hosted members can use MCP queue tools to list, claim, update, hand off, and create work. Revoking their grant blocks future requests while preserving completed work.
Roster views identify hosted members and explain why their activity cannot be observed between calls.
Documentation
Added guidance for setup, MCP connections, queue workflows, access limits, and revocation behavior.
…works its rows
A tool that lives outside a terminal (an assistant, a bot) can already be a
team member: rows go to <member>@<rig>, and over `rig mcp serve --http` it
acts as its grant's seat to list, claim and answer them. But `rig_team`
mapped only node inventory, so such a member disappeared from the team.
`rig_team` now lists a rig's hosted members: the roster members on this host
whose seat is in the rig and that have no node, with their authored
capabilities and caveat, no pane, and activity unknown (never idle). A
roster it can't read, or a host id it doesn't know yet, is said instead of
read as none.
The server's instructions say how a member works rows addressed to it:
list with owned, claim before working, answer with a resolution or a
handoff; listing or reading doesn't take a row. A new reference page,
"Hosted members", gives the recipe (address, roster entry, grant, HTTP
behind TLS, the tool's connector), the facts the record keeps apart, and
today's limits.
The MCP server now includes eligible hosted roster members in rig_team. Roster parsing identifies hosted members. Tests cover team display, queue access, and grant revocation. Documentation describes hosted-member setup, queue operations, and stated limits.

…ters stay unknown
A roster seat with no node isn't necessarily a hosted member: a stale entry
for a removed seat read as one, and a node not launched yet (no session)
read as both a seat and a hosted member. A roster entry now says it's
hosted (`"hosted": true`, an optional authored field), and `rig_team` lists
it only when its seat isn't one of the rig's nodes, a node's address coming
from its logical id when it has no session yet. `rig roster show/find` say
such a member is hosted rather than unmatched.
A roster folder that exists but can't be inspected no longer reads as no
rosters, and unreadable roster files give a generic note: a scoped caller
doesn't see other rosters' names or errors, which go to the server's log.
The new instruction moves last, and the installed scenario's stdio check
pins five lines through an exported verifyInstructions.

State host matching and the unknown-state note in the team view.
On the team:rig_team lists roster entries marked "hosted": true when the seat belongs to this rig, hostSelfId matches the current rig host, and the seat has no node. It includes their capabilities and caveat, no pane, and activity unknown. If a roster cannot be read or the host ID is unknown, hostedMembersNote says so. When hostedMembersNote is present, an empty list does not show that no hosted member exists.

Match the hosted-member rig by its scope segment.
The filter at line 157 accepts any roster seat that ends with @my-rig. A seat such as agent@other@my-rig passes this check. The scope check resolves that seat's rig from the segment after the first @, which is other. A scoped caller whose rigs do not include other cannot reach the listed member. The listing and the scope check disagree on which rig owns the seat.
The roster parser does not reject this seat form. It only requires a non-empty string.
For seats with one @, such as agent@my-rig, the filter behaves as before. Seats with extra @ segments are no longer listed under the wrong rig.

Approved at b06593f. A tool that lives outside a terminal can be a member of a rig's team: a roster entry can mark a member hosted, rig roster show and find say so, and rig_team lists the rig's hosted members with their authored capabilities and limits, no pane, and activity unknown, never idle; an unreadable roster gives a generic note, never "no members". The MCP instructions now name the claim, update and handoff loop a member uses on its rows. Claude (dev60-review) and Codex (review-r2) halves CLEAR at 810ee63; a5a66c3 fixes the scenario fixture's instructions pin, and b06593f only merges main (#2096), checked against the PR's own 9 files. Required CI passes at this head.
…nance
No conflicts. #2095 also edits packages/cli/test/mcp-http-daemon.test.ts; this
merge runs both changes to that file together for the first time.
