fix(providers): refuse to commit an upload whose local file changed (Requested 15) - #1438
Requested 15 asked whether the parallel uploads of Azure, Box, Drime and Dropbox can publish a mixture when the local file changes under them, the way segmented downloads could before #885. They can, and parallelism is not what causes it.
What was measured in the code
Parts read concurrently at different offsets happen on the transfer engine's multipart paths. The single-file path already failed closed (DurableMultipartCheckpoint::verify_against_source before CommitTemp). The batch path (transfer_dag_batch, used for multi-file transfers) did not: it completed the session with no look at the file. Found by the review of this PR, fixed here.
The uploads each provider runs by itself read the file sequentially: Azure upload_blocks pre-reads a batch and only sends it in parallel, the Box and Dropbox sessions read_exact chunk after chunk, Drime reads the whole file into memory. Then they commit (Azure Put Block List, Box session commit, Dropbox upload_session/finish, the Drime upload) with no second look at the file. A file rewritten during that read is uploaded as two versions joined together: every length matches, and the commit publishes a file that never existed on disk. Box does not catch it either, because its whole-file SHA-1 is computed from the bytes that were read.
The fix
A shared providers::upload_source::UploadSource takes the file's size and modification time before the first byte is read and compares them after the last byte is read, before the commit. When they differ, the upload is refused with changed while it was being uploaded (...) and nothing is committed, so the remote keeps its previous content.
Batch multipart (transfer_dag_batch): the file is observed at admission, before any part is read. A file that cannot be observed, or whose size is no longer the one its parts were planned for (grown or shrunk since the scan), fails there, before a session or a part is spent on it; the next scan plans it again. The complete is refused, and the session aborted, when the file no longer matches that observation.
Azure block upload: checked before Put Block List. Uncommitted blocks expire server-side; the API has no explicit discard for them.
Box chunked session: the declared session size, the parts and the check come from one observation. Every failure after the session exists (a read, a token, a part, the check, the commit) deletes the session through the existing best-effort abort, which now runs its token lookup and its DELETE under one 10 s deadline.
Dropbox upload session: the chunk plan and the check before upload_session/finish come from one observation. An unfinished session expires server-side.
Drime: the whole file is read into memory through UploadSource::read_whole, which observes, reads and checks before any request is sent.
Declared limits
A rewrite that keeps both the size and the modification time is not detected (a file system with coarse timestamps, or a writer that restores the time). The transfer engine's check has the same limit.
A small file sent as one streamed request (Azure Put Blob, the Box and Dropbox single uploads, below their session thresholds) has no commit step to hold back. It is not covered here.
Other providers with their own chunked uploads (Google Drive, OneDrive, pCloud, B2, Yandex Disk, WebDAV chunking) were not examined here; they may have the same gap.
Coverage
GUI, CLI and MCP reach these providers through StorageProvider::upload or through the transfer engine (single-file or batch), so the checks apply on all three surfaces.

The full gate is this PR's GitHub Actions run.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Uploads now detect when a local file changes while it is being sent. If a change is detected, the upload fails instead of saving a potentially inconsistent file.
Multipart batch uploads also verify that the file matches the size used to plan the upload, and report an error before starting if it does not.
Failed uploads are less likely to leave unfinished upload sessions behind, and session cleanup now has a bounded timeout.
These safeguards apply across supported multipart upload flows and whole-file uploads; single-request Dropbox uploads remain unchanged.
…Requested 15)
Azure block uploads, the Box and Dropbox upload sessions and the Drime upload read the local file and then commit with no second look at it, so a file rewritten during the read was published as two versions joined together. A shared UploadSource takes the file's size and modification time before the first read and checks them before the commit; when they differ the upload is refused and nothing is committed. The transfer engine's native multipart path already had this check.

Check regression assertions for zero completions and one abort on source rewrite and planned-size mismatch.
Walkthrough
The change adds UploadSource to record local file size and optional modification time. Azure, Box, Dropbox, Drime Cloud, and batch multipart uploads use it to check for source changes during upload processing.
Adds UploadSource to record file size and optional modification time. Checks reject missing, unreadable, or changed files. read_whole checks the source before returning bytes. Tests cover unchanged files, changed files, rewrites during reading, and removed files.
Batch multipart uploads record a source observation and validate it against the planned size before starting multipart I/O. Before completion, a failed check aborts the upload and emits a non-retryable LocalIo file error. Tests cover source changes, size mismatches, and observation failures.
Azure and Box check the source before committing uploaded blocks or parts. Box also attempts to delete failed sessions, with a 10-second timeout. Dropbox checks before finishing large-file sessions. Drime Cloud uses checked whole-file reads. Tests cover Azure and Box source changes and Box session cleanup.

Update the Box chunked-upload flow around ensure_unchanged so a source-change
error after session creation invokes the supplied
abort_upload_session_best_effort helper before returning the error. Preserve the
existing error result while ensuring the abandoned upload session is cleaned up.
Add a Drime upload test that covers the post-read source check.
Add a Drime upload test that covers the post-read source check.
The Drime upload path now calls ensure_unchanged after reading the local file, but no Drime test exercises that call. Removing it leaves the existing Drime upload tests passing. A regression that drops the check would not be caught in the Drime module.
Changing the file between the read and the check requires a test seam, because upload() has no point between observe and read where a test can rewrite the file. One option is a test-only hook placed between the read and the check. Without a seam, a concurrent rewrite test would be timing-dependent. The test should assert that no upload request is sent when the file changes during the read.

…check (Requested 15)
A Box upload refused because its local file changed now deletes the upload session instead of leaving it to expire. The Drime upload reads the file through UploadSource::read_whole, which observes, reads and checks in one place, with a test that rewrites the file between the read and the check.

@coderabbitai Both follow-ups from review 5708715610 are addressed in 58220a7de.
Box session abort (box_provider.rs, chunked_upload_session). Valid. A refusal from ensure_unchanged now calls abort_upload_session_best_effort(&session.id) before returning the same error. The regression a_file_rewritten_during_a_chunked_upload_is_not_committed now points the provider at the double (upload_base_override) and asserts one DELETE /files/upload_sessions/sess-rewrite, next to "every part sent" and "no commit". Azure and Dropbox have nothing to delete: uncommitted Azure blocks and unfinished Dropbox sessions expire server-side, and neither API offers an explicit discard for them.
Drime post-read check test (drime_cloud.rs). Addressed with a seam, but in the shared helper rather than in upload(). The observe, read and check sequence moved into UploadSource::read_whole, and Drime now calls only that. read_whole_with takes the read as a closure, and a_whole_read_of_a_file_rewritten_during_the_read_is_refused rewrites the file between the read and the check and asserts the refusal. A second test pins the normal path. The Drime call site is now a single line, so the check can no longer be dropped on its own: removing it means replacing read_whole with a plain read. A Drime-module test asserting that no request is sent would need a test-only hook inside upload() itself, which this change avoids on purpose.

Check the local source before the batch multipart commit.
The batch multipart route reads each part from entry.local_path and calls multipart_complete with no source check. If the file changes between part reads, the completed object can mix content from two versions. The single-file route already checks the source before commit. Add the same observe and ensure_unchanged checks to the batch multipart path. This defect predates this PR, which does not change that route.

Bound the Box abort DELETE with a timeout.
The new abort call on the source-change path awaits a DELETE with no deadline. Call sites that pass no cancellation token and have no timeout, such as cross_profile_transfer.rs and sync.rs, can wait for the 1800-second client read timeout before the change error returns. src-tauri/src/providers/box_provider.rs:1598-1599 Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Abort the Box upload session on every failure after session creation.
Only the ensure_unchanged branch calls abort_upload_session_best_effort. A failed read_exact, a failed token request, a failed part PUT, or a non-success part status returns early and leaves the session open. The parts already uploaded stay in that open session until Box expires it.
Route the read, token, PUT, and status steps through a helper or inner block that returns Result. When that block returns an error, call self.abort_upload_session_best_effort(&session.id).await once, then return the original error. The session id is parsed from session_resp.json() at lines 1504-1507, so it is in scope. Let the ensure_unchanged branch use the same abort point so the session is aborted only once. The success path and the commit step do not change.

In the Box chunked upload flow, route the post-session read, token, part upload,

Cover the public read_whole path with a mid-read rewrite test.
read_whole delegates to read_whole_with, so it runs the post-read ensure_unchanged check. The existing tests do not exercise that check through read_whole. The unchanged-file test calls read_whole on a file that is not rewritten. The rewrite test calls read_whole_with directly. A change that replaced the delegation with a plain read would leave both tests passing. drime_cloud.rs calls read_whole directly, so that is the production path without mid-read coverage. read_whole fixes its reader to tokio::fs::read, so a test that rewrites the file during its read needs a seam in the wrapper. The production code is correct.

@axpnet Thanks. The inspected code supports both follow-ups:
Box: If ensure_unchanged refuses the upload, chunked_upload_session calls abort_upload_session_best_effort and returns the original error before commit. The regression fixture routes session deletion to the local server.
Drime:upload() calls UploadSource::read_whole. The shared helper checks the source after reading. Its regression test rewrites the file between the read and the check and asserts refusal. This covers the post-read check without adding a test-only hook inside upload().
I have no further change requests for these two follow-ups. I inspected the code but did not run tests or verify current CI results.
If you found this review helpful, would you consider giving us a shout-out on X?

The batch multipart path reads each file's parts at their offsets concurrently and completed with no look at the file; it now observes the file before the parts are read and refuses the complete, aborting the session, when the file changed or no longer has the size the parts were cut for. Box and Dropbox take the size they upload from the same observation the pre-commit check uses, Box deletes its session on every failure after creating it, with a deadline on that request, and read_whole's mid-read rewrite test goes through read_whole itself.

@coderabbitai The follow-ups and the nitpick of review 5709327167 are addressed in b70e7c4c8 (the inline finding is answered in its thread).
Major, batch multipart without a source check (transfer_dag_batch). Valid, and it corrected a claim in this PR's description, now fixed. The batch path reads each file's parts at their offsets concurrently and completed with no look at the file. MultipartFileRuntime now holds an UploadSource observed when the runtime is built, before any part is read. decide_multipart_file_outcome calls check_multipart_source before multipart_complete. It refuses, aborts the session and fails the file (LocalIo, not retryable) when the file could not be observed, when its size then differed from the size the parts were cut for, or when it no longer matches. Two regressions: multipart_upload_of_a_file_rewritten_during_its_parts_is_not_completed (rewrite while parts are in flight: no complete, one abort) and multipart_upload_planned_for_another_size_is_not_completed (parts planned for 24 bytes, file of 30). Both fail with the check stubbed out. The whole transfer_dag_batch module passes.
Minor, deadline on the Box abort DELETE. Valid. abort_upload_session_best_effort wraps the request in tokio::time::timeout(BOX_ABORT_TIMEOUT) (10 s) and stays best-effort.
Minor, abort the Box session on every failure after it exists. Valid. The read, token, part and status steps, and the ensure_unchanged check, run in one inner block. Any error from it deletes the session once and returns the original error. The commit step is unchanged. New regression: a_refused_part_deletes_the_chunked_upload_session (a part answered 500: one DELETE, no commit).
Nitpick, read_whole mid-read rewrite through the public path. Done. read_whole_with is gone. read_whole observes, reads with tokio::fs::read, runs a #[cfg(test)] after-read hook (a thread-local, empty in production builds) and then checks. a_whole_read_of_a_file_rewritten_during_the_read_is_refused sets the hook and calls read_whole itself.
The other chunked providers named in the declared limits (Google Drive, OneDrive, pCloud, B2, Yandex Disk, WebDAV chunking) are now tracked as their own follow-up item and stay out of this PR.

Bound the token refresh inside the cleanup timeout.
BOX_ABORT_TIMEOUT wraps only the delete request in abort_upload_session_best_effort. get_token() runs before that timeout and can refresh an expired token with no deadline, so a stalled token endpoint can delay the upload error well past 10 seconds. Move get_token() and bearer_header() inside the tokio::time::timeout. This predates the change: the PR narrows the wait but does not remove it.

When UploadSource::observe fails, .ok() stores source: None. Part reads and the session still run. check_multipart_source then refuses the commit and aborts the file. Return the observation error as a file failure before the multipart runtime is built.

In the file-admission flow around UploadSource::observe, stop converting
observation errors to None; propagate the error as a file failure before
building the multipart runtime, and only proceed with a successfully observed
source.
Add a test for a multipart upload whose source cannot be observed.
Add a test for a multipart upload whose source cannot be observed.
Both new batch tests in this hunk use a local file that is observable when the upload starts. The source: None branch of check_multipart_source refuses completion. No multipart test in this file reaches that branch with a missing observation followed by successful part reads, so a change that accepted None would not fail these tests. Add a test where the initial observation fails, the parts read successfully, and the test asserts complete_calls == 0 and abort_calls == 1.

@axpnet Thanks. The inspected code supports all four follow-ups:
Batch multipart: The runtime observes the source before part reads. Before completion, it rejects a missing observation, a planned-size mismatch, or a changed source. It aborts the session and reports a non-retryable LocalIo failure. Both regressions assert zero completions and one abort.
Box abort deadline: The best-effort DELETE request has a 10-second timeout.
Box failure cleanup: Errors from opening, reading, authentication, part upload, response parsing, or source validation reach one cleanup branch. That branch attempts session deletion and returns the original error. The refused-part regression asserts one DELETE and no commit.
Whole-file read: The rewrite regression calls public UploadSource::read_whole. Its test-only hook runs between the read and source validation.
I have no further change requests for these follow-ups. The other chunked providers remain outside this PR, as you noted.
I inspected the implementation and test assertions. I did not run tests or verify current CI results. Confirm that the required GitHub Actions checks pass for the current revision before merging.

Learning: In src-tauri/src/transfer_dag_batch.rs, ordinary multipart failures are recorded in MultipartFileState. …bound the Box abort (Requested 15)
A batch multipart file whose local file cannot be observed now fails at admission, before a session or a part is spent on it, so the runtime always holds an observation. The Box session abort runs its token lookup and its DELETE under one deadline, and a refused commit deletes the session like every earlier failure.

@coderabbitai The three follow-ups of review 5709838333 are addressed in 75049c87f (the inline finding on the commit cleanup is answered in its thread).
Minor, token refresh inside the cleanup deadline (box_provider.rs, abort_upload_session_best_effort). Valid. get_token(), bearer_header() and the DELETE now run in one async block under a single tokio::time::timeout(BOX_ABORT_TIMEOUT), so a stalled token refresh can no longer hold the upload error past 10 s. It stays best-effort.
Minor, fail at admission when the observation fails (transfer_dag_batch.rs). Valid. run_one_batch_file observes a multipart file right after the existing unsupported-wire preflight. If UploadSource::observe fails, the file fails there through a shared fail_before_graph helper, the same accounting the preflight already used (LocalIo, not retryable), and no session is opened and no part is read. MultipartFileRuntime::source is now a plain UploadSource, not an Option, so check_multipart_source no longer has a None branch: it refuses only a planned-size mismatch or a changed file, as before, with an abort.
Trivial, a test for an unobservable source. Added, in the form the admission check gives it: multipart_upload_of_a_file_that_cannot_be_observed_fails_before_its_parts uses a local path that does not exist and asserts one failed file, zero part calls, zero completes and zero aborts, since no session is opened. That is the behaviour the previous follow-up asked for, so there is no longer an "unobservable but parts read" state to test.
The whole transfer_dag_batch and box_provider test modules pass, and clippy with -D warnings is clean on lib and tests.

Compare the observed file size before multipart begin.
The batch reads the local file size at admission, but compares it with the planned size only at commit. If the file grows after the scan, every planned part uploads before the commit check rejects it and aborts the session. Compare source.size() with entry.size directly after UploadSource::observe, and fail before multipart_begin.

Assert that no multipart session opens for an unobservable source.
Assert that no multipart session opens for an unobservable source.
The test checks failed, part_calls, complete_calls, and abort_calls, but not begin_calls. The current code returns before the multipart begin gate, so begin_calls is zero today. A regression that opens a session before the source check and records no abort can still pass this test, because no asserted counter changes.

Learning: Within repository "axpdev-lab/aeroftp", only for files matching one of ["src-tauri/src/providers/box_provider.rs"]: When reviewing Box's legacy chunked upload path in src-tauri/src/providers/box_provider.rs, verify that upload observes the local source before deriving its upload size. The threshold, new-file and new-version session sizes, chunk-loop bound, Content-Range total, and pre-commit ensure_unchanged check must use the same UploadSource observation. Do not accept a separate later observation in chunked_upload_session as validation of an earlier size.
@axpnet Thanks. The inspected code supports all three follow-ups:
Box cleanup:get_token(), bearer_header(), and DELETE run inside one async block under BOX_ABORT_TIMEOUT. Cleanup remains best-effort.
Batch admission: If source observation fails, run_one_batch_file reports a non-retryable LocalIo failure before graph execution. MultipartFileRuntime::source now requires an UploadSource.
Regression: The unobservable-source test asserts one failed file, zero part calls, zero completions, and zero aborts. Zero aborts is correct because admission fails before session creation.
I have no further change requests for these three follow-ups. I inspected the implementation and test assertions; I did not run tests or verify current CI results. Confirm that required GitHub Actions checks pass for the current revision before merging.

Learning: In src-tauri/src/bin/aeroftp_cli.rs, sync conflict-rename uploads must use the same remote_parent_mkdir_is_required policy as normal sync uploads. FTP, FTPS, SFTP, WebDAV, and Local require real parent directories. S3, B2, and Swift create prefixes through object uploads, so optional directory-marker failures must not block conflict uploads.

Learning: In axpdev-lab/aeroftp, src/hooks/useOverwriteCheck.ts checks destinations against the current localFiles or remoteFiles panel listing, not the actual targetDir. This limitation predates PR #1013 and also affects single-file paste and planner transfers into another folder. src/utils/fileBatchRouting.ts documents the limitation at keepsSingleFilePath. Listing the actual destination folder before overwrite prompts is tracked as a separate follow-up outside the parallel-transfer change.

Learning: In `src-tauri/src/providers/sftp.rs`, when `parallel_download_if_unchanged` returns `Ok(false)`, `SftpProvider::download_with_size_hint` must disable both the read-ahead and pipelined SFTP download paths for that attempt. Those paths can open multiple handles to the same remote path, while the required fallback uses one handle after source validation refuses a parallel download.

A batch multipart file whose size no longer matches the one its parts were planned for now fails at admission, before a session or a part is spent on it; the commit-time check keeps only the unchanged-file comparison. The admission tests assert that no session is opened.

The admission observation moves into observe_multipart_source, which names the file and both sizes in its refusal; the commit-time check is inlined, the runtime asserts that its layout matches the observation, and the run_one_batch_file doc block is back on its function. The mock executor records file errors, so the admission tests assert the exact failure, and the planned-size test covers a file that grew and one that shrank.

@coderabbitai Both follow-ups of review 5711157338 are addressed in 7b01e093f.
Minor, compare the observed size before multipart begin (transfer_dag_batch.rs). Valid. Admission now goes through observe_multipart_source, which observes the local file and compares source.size() with entry.size, the size the shape and the layout are cut from. A mismatch, grown or shrunk, fails the file there through fail_before_graph (LocalIo, not retryable). The message names the file and both sizes and ends with "nothing was sent", before multipart_begin and before any part is read. The runtime is built only from that observation, with a debug_assert_eq! that the layout's total equals it. The complete keeps only the unchanged-file comparison, inlined at the commit node. multipart_upload_planned_for_another_size_fails_before_its_session covers a file of 30 and one of 16 bytes for a 24-byte plan, and asserts zero begins, parts, completes and aborts, plus the exact recorded failure.
Trivial, assert that no session opens for an unobservable source. Done: the test asserts begin_calls == 0, and also the recorded failure (LocalIo, "cannot be read before its parts are"). The mock executor now records every file error, so these tests prove which branch failed the file.
The whole transfer_dag_batch module and the upload_source tests pass, and clippy with -D warnings is clean on lib and tests.
@axpnet Thanks. The inspected code supports both follow-ups:
Admission check:observe_multipart_source compares the observed size with entry.size before graph execution. An observation failure or size mismatch produces a non-retryable LocalIo failure before session creation or part reads.
Regression assertions: The size-mismatch test covers both growth and shrinkage. Both tests assert zero begins, parts, completions, and aborts. They also check the recorded LocalIo failure and the relevant error text.
The commit node still checks the source against the admission observation. If the source changed, it aborts the session without calling multipart_complete.
I have no further change requests for these two follow-ups. I inspected the implementation and test assertions; I did not run tests or verify current CI results. Before merging, confirm that the required GitHub Actions jobs—including the full build.yml gates—pass for the current revision.

Learning: In src-tauri/src/transfer_dag_batch.rs, ordinary multipart failures are recorded in MultipartFileState. AcquireResource and UploadPart return NodeOutcome::Completed so sibling parts drain; CommitTemp reports terminal file failures as NodeOutcome::FileFailedButGraphContinues. These file-local failures do not cause execute_dag to return Err. Graph-error cleanup handles engine faults rather than ordinary provider failures.

Add a retryable assertion to both admission-failure tests.

Add a retryable assertion to both admission-failure tests.
Both tests check TransferFailureKind::LocalIo and the message, but neither checks retryable. A change that marks these admission failures as retryable would still pass both tests. Add assert!(!errors[0].retryable) to each test so the classification is checked.

Review comment at @src-tauri/src/transfer_dag_batch.rs at line 3775:
In both admission-failure tests, add an assertion that the first error is not
retryable alongside the existing LocalIo kind and message assertions. Locate the
tests by their checks of errors[0].kind and verify errors[0].retryable is false.

@coderabbitai The follow-up of review 5712638783 is addressed in 6f7af52d8: both admission-failure tests now also assert !errors[0].retryable, next to the LocalIo kind and the message, so a change that made a refused plan or an unreadable source retryable fails them. Test-only change.
@axpnet Verified 6f7af52d8. Both admission-failure tests now assert !errors[0].retryable beside the LocalIo and message assertions. The commit changes tests only.

Requested 15 asked whether the parallel uploads of Azure, Box, Drime and Dropbox can publish a mixture when the local file changes under them, the way segmented downloads could before #885. They can, and parallelism is not what causes it.
What was measured in the code
DurableMultipartCheckpoint::verify_against_sourcebeforeCommitTemp). The batch path (transfer_dag_batch, used for multi-file transfers) did not: it completed the session with no look at the file. Then they commit (AzurePut Block List, Box session commit, Dropboxupload_session/finish, the Drime upload) with no second look at the file. A file rewritten during that read is uploaded as two versions joined together: every length matches, and the commit publishes a file that never existed on disk. Box does not catch it either, because its whole-file SHA-1 is computed from the bytes that were read. The fix
A shared

A file that cannot be observed, or whose size is no longer the one its parts were planned for (grown or shrunk since the scan), fails there, before a session or a part is spent on it; the next scan plans it again.
