fix: an upload keeps the file's date, so a Compare after it converges (Requested 125) - #1460
A download kept the file's date and an upload did not. After a transfer from local to remote, identical files read as newer on the remote side of a Compare, and a later mirror would download them again. W0 measured it on Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and pCloud.
Change
pCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox receive the local date with the upload, as rclone sends it: mtime on pCloud, modifiedTime on Drive, fileSystemInfo on OneDrive, client_modified on Dropbox. This covers the single request and the session paths.
Their listings report that date instead of when the server stored the file. For Dropbox and OneDrive this changes the date shown for existing files too, as rclone reads them.
A provider that cannot keep a date: a remote date stamped by our own upload no longer reads as a remote edit. It counts only when it is later than the baseline and not later than the moment that file's upload finished (uploaded_at, kept per file in the sync index and in the journal for a resumed run), and never for an upload that did not settle.
Limits
A same-size remote edit made before our upload of that file finished reads as unchanged. There is no margin after it: a server clock ahead of ours reads as changed, as it did before.
A first Compare with no sync index, on a provider that cannot keep a date, still shows the difference.
The other providers were not given a way to keep the date here: S3 metadata, SFTP setstat, FTP MFMT and WebDAV are not touched, and rely on the index rule above.
A native bulk call reports its files together, so they share the end of that call as uploaded_at.
On Dropbox a replacement of the same size that keeps client_modified reads as unchanged. rclone reads the same date and has the same limit without --checksum.
Measured
These runs predate the move to a per-file uploaded_at, which applies only to providers that cannot keep a date; the four below keep it.
Real accounts, test folders since deleted, a file dated 2021-03-04 of 2 KB and of 10 MiB:
pCloud, Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox: the date read back equals the local one for both sizes.
sync --dry-run afterwards: 0 uploads, 0 downloads, 0 deletes, 2 skipped, on all four.
Before the last fix OneDrive's 10 MiB file kept the upload date and the dry run wanted to download it, which is how the session path was found.
Tests
Provider date helper (pre-1970 included), Dropbox commit, OneDrive's date request and its order before the version sweep, the stamped-date rule, the full library suite, clippy. The CodeRabbit CLI found three points in the first version (a 60-second margin that could hide an edit, pre-1970 dates, a OneDrive session after a cd), all fixed here. Not run on Windows.

Bug Fixes
Cloud sync now preserves local file modification dates when uploading to supported providers, helping remote files retain their original dates.
Improved sync comparisons to avoid incorrectly treating timestamp changes caused by uploads as remote edits.
Upload completion times are recorded and retained when resuming syncs, improving timestamp handling across completed uploads.
… (Requested 125)
A download kept the date and an upload did not: identical files then read as newer on the remote side, and a later mirror would download them again. pCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox now receive the local date with the upload, as rclone sends it, and their listings report that date rather than when the server stored the file. Where a provider cannot keep it, a remote date stamped by our own upload, between the baseline and the end of that sync, no longer reads as a remote edit.

…nd across a cd
A remote date only reads as stamped by our upload up to the end of that sync, with no margin, and never for an upload that did not settle. Pre-1970 local dates are kept. A OneDrive session sets the date on the destination it opened with.

Walkthrough
Provider upload paths now send available local modification times. The sync journal and index record upload completion times. Indexed comparison uses those times to distinguish upload-stamped remote dates from other remote timestamp changes.

Summary
Capture and send local modification times src-tauri/src/providers/*
Provider upload paths capture or read local modification times and include them in provider metadata when available. Dropbox and OneDrive remote entries prefer the resulting file-level dates when present.
Record upload completion times src-tauri/src/sync.rs, src-tauri/src/cloud_service.rs, src-tauri/src/cloud_service/bulk.rs, src-tauri/src/transfer_dag/*, src/utils/remoteSyncRunner.ts, src/types.ts
Journal and index entries add optional uploaded_at values. Successful uploads record completion times, and the sync baseline retains those values.
Compare remote timestamps src-tauri/src/sync.rs
Indexed comparison does not treat a remote timestamp as an edit when it is later than the settled baseline and no later than the recorded upload time. Tests cover missing or unsettled baselines and timestamps outside that interval.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 2e385
Upload completion timestamps now exclude later metadata and processing delays. A narrow OneDrive race remains: a concurrent replacement can receive the uploaded file’s date. Merging warrants owner awareness and a follow-up to bind that update to the uploaded item.

Reading the date against the time of the last sync would have hidden a same-size remote edit once a later sync moved that time forward. The index now records when this file was uploaded, per file, and a remote date counts as our stamp only up to then.

The source check runs before commit, but a rewrite can still land after it.
VerifyChecksum runs after the last part receipt and before CommitTemp. It fails the file when the source size or modification time differs from the values recorded when the transfer started. A rewrite during part reads therefore stops the commit.
A rewrite after that check and before the completion request still commits. The request sends the mtime captured at the start of the upload. If the new file has the same size, and its modification time is within the Compare window of that captured value, Compare reads the files as Identical and does not upload the change. Another size or mtime check before the request leaves the same gap, so this comment does not propose an edit.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 3ea2585b4c82); the change keeps it reachable.

Add a success-path test that asserts the date PATCH payload.
a_known_plain_folder_costs_no_extra_lookup_before_an_upload checks only the recorded request list. Its date PATCH entries pass even when Graph rejects the request. The test fixture answers PATCH with NOT_FOUND, and keep_local_date only logs a warning on a non-success status. upload still returns Ok(()). No test in this file checks a successful date PATCH or its fileSystemInfo.lastModifiedDateTime value.
Keep the existing lookup-cost test as it is. Add a separate test that answers the PATCH with success and captures its request body. Assert that the body sets fileSystemInfo.lastModifiedDateTime to the local modification time. graph_fixture records only METHOD path and discards the request body, so the fixture must store the body for this assertion. A status check alone does not catch a wrong date. keep_local_date returns (), so no status reaches the caller.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Legacy resumable upload records modifiedTime before opening and reading its file, with no source-stability check visible in the supplied upload loop.
Drive may retain a date from one local version while storing bytes from another, making a later Compare incorrectly converge.
This can occur when: A same-size local rewrite occurs after metadata construction and before the final chunk is read.

The index dated an upload when it was written, after the whole run, so a same-size remote edit made in between read as the stamp of our own upload. Each upload now keeps the time it ended, in the runner and in AeroCloud; a resumed run did not see the upload and records none. Dropbox and OneDrive read the local date again after the bytes left, which could put a rewritten file's date on the old bytes: they now send the date from before the upload.

Bind the post-upload date write to the uploaded item's eTag at every upload path.
keep_local_date sends a PATCH to the file path, not to the item the upload created. If another client replaces the file after the upload and before the PATCH, the local date is written onto the replacement. A same-size replacement with that date can then compare as unchanged. Send each date write with an If-Match header set to the eTag from that upload's response. Graph returns 412 Precondition Failed for a changed item. The helper logs the status and keeps the replacement's date. The upload itself still succeeds.
If an upload response yields no eTag, skip the date write. The uploaded file then keeps its server-assigned date, which is the behavior before this change. Do not fetch a later item version to supply an eTag, because that version may belong to a replacement.
Suggested fix
Change the helper so every caller must supply the eTag:
- /// Give an uploaded file its local date. The upload has already succeeded,- /// so a refusal costs only the date: the Compare reads the file as newer- /// here, and the sync index still recognises it.- async fn keep_local_date(&self, path: &str, date: &str) {+ /// Give an uploaded file its local date, only while it still has the+ /// `etag` its upload returned. A replacement written since then fails the+ /// precondition with 412 and keeps its own date. The upload has already+ /// succeeded, so a refusal costs only the date: the Compare reads the file+ /// as newer here, and the sync index still recognises it.+ async fn keep_local_date(&self, path: &str, date: &str, etag: &str) {
let body = serde_json::json!({"fileSystemInfo": {"lastModifiedDateTime": date}});
let request = match self.auth_header().await {
Ok(auth) => self
.client
.patch(self.api_path(path))
.header(AUTHORIZATION, auth)
.header(CONTENT_TYPE, "application/json")
+ .header(reqwest::header::IF_MATCH, etag)
.body(body.to_string()),
Add this helper at module level, next to the other free functions in onedrive.rs:
+/// The `eTag` of the driveItem that a successful upload answered with.+/// Returns `None` when the body is not JSON or has no `eTag`.+async fn uploaded_item_etag(response: reqwest::Response) -> Option<String> {+ let item: serde_json::Value = response.json().await.ok()?;+ item["eTag"].as_str().map(str::to_owned)+}
Simple upload, after the success check:
if !response.status().is_success() {
return Err(onedrive_error_from_response(response, "Upload failed:").await);
}
+ let uploaded_etag = match local_date {+ Some(_) => uploaded_item_etag(response).await,+ None => None,+ };+
info!("Uploaded {} to {}", local_path, remote_path);
- if let Some(date) = local_date {- self.keep_local_date(&path, &date).await;+ if let (Some(date), Some(etag)) = (&local_date, &uploaded_etag) {+ self.keep_local_date(&path, date, etag).await;
}
Resumable upload. Add the variable before the chunk loop:
let mut offset = start_offset;
+ let mut uploaded_etag: Option<String> = None;
Read the body only on the final fragment, which is the one that does not return 202:
let status = resp.status();
if !status.is_success() && status.as_u16() != 202 {
let text = resp.text().await.unwrap_or_default();
return Err(ProviderError::TransferFailed(format!(
"Upload chunk failed ({}): {}",
status,
sanitize_api_error(&text)
)));
}
+ if status.as_u16() != 202 {+ // Only the final fragment answers 200 or 201, with the driveItem.+ uploaded_etag = uploaded_item_etag(resp).await;+ }
- if let Some(date) = local_date {- self.keep_local_date(&path, &date).await;+ if let (Some(date), Some(etag)) = (&local_date, &uploaded_etag) {+ self.keep_local_date(&path, date, etag).await;
}
Multipart. Keep the final part's eTag in its receipt:
let status = resp.status().as_u16();
// 200/201 = session finalised; 202 = Accepted (non-final chunk).
if status != 200 && status != 201 && status != 202 {
return Err(onedrive_error_from_response(resp, "Upload chunk failed:").await);
}
+ // Only the final part answers 200 or 201, with the driveItem.+ let etag = if status == 202 {+ String::new()+ } else {+ uploaded_item_etag(resp).await.unwrap_or_default()+ };+
Ok(UploadedPart {
part_number,
- etag: String::new(),+ etag,
})
Multipart completion. Use the one non-empty eTag, and skip the date write if none exists:
- if let (Some(date), Some(path)) = (&meta.modified, &meta.destination) {- self.keep_local_date(path, date).await;+ let uploaded_etag = parts+ .iter()+ .map(|part| part.etag.as_str())+ .find(|etag| !etag.is_empty());+ if let (Some(date), Some(path), Some(etag)) =+ (&meta.modified, &meta.destination, uploaded_etag)+ {+ self.keep_local_date(path, date, etag).await;
}

@coderabbitai Not changing this. It is a same-size replacement by another client in the moment between the upload and the date PATCH. rclone writes the date on OneDrive with the same PATCH without If-Match, so this is a limit of the common method. Your own label for it is a poor tradeoff: an upload response without an eTag would lose the date, which is what this PR fixes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@axpnet Understood. If the upload response has no eTag, my proposal would skip date preservation and undermine this PR’s goal.
The concurrent-replacement race remains possible, but you have accepted that limit of the post-upload PATCH. I accept your decision to keep the implementation unchanged and will not press this suggestion.
The time was read after the stat or the listing that follows an upload, and for a bulk member when the run reached it, which widened the window in which a same-size remote edit reads as our own stamp.

sync --dry-runafterwards: 0 uploads, 0 downloads, 0 deletes, 2 skipped, on all four.Before the last fix OneDrive's 10 MiB file kept the upload date and the dry run wanted to download it, which is how the session path was found.

Provider date helper (pre-1970 included), Dropbox commit, OneDrive's date request and its order before the version sweep, the stamped-date rule, the full library suite, clippy. The CodeRabbit CLI found three points in the first version (a 60-second margin that could hide an edit, pre-1970 dates, a OneDrive session after a
cd), all fixed here. Not run on Windows.Summary by CodeRabbit
