RFC #420 stack 8/10 (base test-h3, merge bottom-up): #483 → #484 → #485 → #486 → #487 → #488 → #489 → #493 → #494 → #586 → #587 → #588. This PR merges after #489; until the lower PRs merge, GitHub also shows their commits. This PR's own diff.

Evidence location: the measurement outputs of this PR (JSON, figures, audit files) are not part of its diff. They are on the fork's pr_assets branch under pr493/ (links in this description are fixed to that commit). Paths such as reports/experiments/... below name where a runner writes its output.

What

  • Tensor-parallel AdaLN projection (2688 → 96768, 520 MB of BF16 weight per block). Rank r owns the contiguous output columns [r·N/tp, (r+1)·N/tp), which are the same weight and bias rows.

    • N/tp must be a multiple of the 64-column d_input chunk of the WS1 contract, so a shard never splits a WS1 partial sum.
    • TP 1/2/3/4/6/7/8 qualify. Anything else fails closed when the op is built.
    • The gathered table is the WS1 table, so the six tensors and the 3T modality rows are views of it, exactly as in WS1.
  • Every floating-point operation is the WS1 kernel, so every rank ends with the WS1 bytes:

    • forward: the local tensor-core GEMV produces the WS1 columns, and a rank-ordered all-gather (a copy) rebuilds the table;
    • dW/db: shard-local;
    • d_temb: each rank computes the WS1 chunk partials of its columns, the all-gather puts them in global chunk order, and every rank runs the WS1 ascending fold.

    No collective reduction arithmetic is used. To expose these pieces, h3_det_linear_backward_input is split into _partials and _fold_chunks; the kernels are unchanged.

  • Readback: tp, rank, owned columns and (modality, chunk) slots, collective backend, kernel ids and fallback state.

  • ws2_comm.gather_rows pads small gathers past DeterministicCollective's single-block byte-copy path. That path takes about 4 µs per KiB for outputs up to 256 KiB, and the padding brings the T = 1 forward from 0.9–1.35 ms down to 0.12 ms.

Prior art & reuse decision

Every floating-point operation here is #485's verified WS1 kernel, unchanged, and the only collective is this repository's deterministic all-gather, used as a copy. No new kernel is written, so the survey and batch-invariance checks of #485 apply.

Direct bitwise comparison

The column-parallel AdaLN projection is composed of the WS1 rows below it, and their reuse candidates are compared byte for byte with tools/validation/models/h3_bitwise_reuse.py (committed in #483, merged down the stack). It runs every candidate that h3_prior_art.candidates() defines on identical inputs and compares every output and leaf gradient with diffusers' path and with the rl-kernel op. Each row's report, written from a clean tree on its own branch: #483 timestep_sinusoid; #484 timestep_mlp; #485 adaln_projection; #486 adaln_row_gather; #487 norm_modulate; #488 gate_residual; #489 final_adaln_out.

Results (8 × B200, real NCCL, one GPU per rank, pinned block-0 weights)

tp_adaln_3mod evidence

WS1 (1 GPU) TP2 TP4 TP8
table, d_temb, dW/db shards bitwise equal to WS1 (every rank, T = 1..4) n/a yes yes yes
forward, T = 1 / 3 0.10 / 0.10 ms 0.12 / 0.11 ms 0.11 / 0.11 ms 0.12 / 0.12 ms

Times are for the slowest rank, and each rank holds 1/tp of the weight and its gradient. The WS1 forward already streams the weight at about 5 TB/s, so the TP forward is bounded by the collective's host-synchronising all-gather (~0.1 ms). The data is in reports/experiments/h3-tp-adaln-3mod-b200/report.json, written from a clean tree at 507c9ad.

Status

History

Pre-refactor validation (historical, before 2026-10-10)
python -m pytest tests/models/minimax_h3/test_h3_tp_adaln.py -v
python tools/validation/models/h3_ws2_evidence.py --op tp_adaln_3mod --worlds 1,2,4,8 --out report.json && python tools/validation/models/plot_h3_evidence.py report.json
Check Result
ownership (shards tile the table once; unsupported TP fails closed) passed
shard arithmetic on one GPU (columns and chunk partials equal the WS1 slice; the fold equals WS1 d_input) passed
real NCCL TP2 / TP4 / TP8 vs WS1 (8 × B200) passed (tests/models/minimax_h3: 243 passed, none skipped)
tests/models/minimax_h3 + dispatch + gtest-GPU all pass; the only failure is the npu dispatch test that already fails on test-h3

The repository's CI workflows only run on PRs to main or test, so on test-h3 only the DCO and CodeRabbit checks run. The results above come from local runs on B200s.

Tests

Measured at commit a65a02b9, an earlier head of this PR (later commits are listed under History and these runs were not repeated for the current head), 8× B200, pinned MiniMax-H3@42ed227 weights; each build compiled from a clean checkout of that commit:

python tools/weights/prepare_h3_weights.py --out <dir> && export RL_KERNEL_H3_WEIGHTS=<dir>
python setup.py build_ext --inplace                                  # default build
python -m pytest tests/models/minimax_h3 tests/build tests/runtime/test_dispatch.py -q
KERNEL_ALIGN_USE_FAST_MATH=1 python setup.py build_ext --inplace     # fast-math build, same pytest
Build H3 kernels in _C passed / skipped / failed
default yes 501 / 3 / 0
KERNEL_ALIGN_USE_FAST_MATH=1 no (PyTorch reference fallback) 168 / 336 / 0

Default-build skips (environment only): 1 × could not import 'matplotlib'; 1 × could not import 'sglang.kernels.ops.diffusion.modulate.timestep_embedding_jit'; 1 × extension enforcement is CI-only (orchestrator sets RL_KERNEL_REQUIRE_EXT=1).

Fast-math regression tests: tests/build/test_build_platform_collectives.py::test_cuda_build_compiles_h3_kernels_without_fast_math, ::test_fast_math_build_excludes_bitwise_h3_kernels, tests/runtime/test_dispatch.py::test_h3_timestep_falls_back_when_fast_math_build_omits_kernel, ::test_h3_ops_prefer_cuda_and_fall_back_to_pytorch_reference.

On this PR the GitHub checks are DCO and CodeRabbit only (the CPU lint/unit/docs workflow for test-h3 arrives with #586), so the GPU results above are the test evidence.

Scope / Known limitations

CUDA only. The ROCm column stays open. DeterministicCollective supports world sizes 1, 2, 4 and 8. norm_out.linear (2688 → 10752) is small and stays replicated.

.coderabbit.yaml is not part of this operator. The branch carries the test-h3 CodeRabbit auto-review config, inherited through the stack from commits d113891 and 5c79216. The file is byte-identical to #490's, so it drops out of this diff once #490 merges into test-h3.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added MiniMax-H3 conditioning operations, including timestep embeddings, AdaLN projection and gathering, RMSNorm modulation, gated residuals, and final AdaLN output.

Results (H100 / Hopper)

Measured on 4 x NVIDIA H100 94GB (sm90), driver 580.173.02, CUDA 13.0, torch 2.13.0+cu130, pinned MiniMax-H3@42ed227, clean tree at 6aaca7d7. B200 and H100 are independent measurement sets (RFC #420); timings and raw bytes are not compared across GPUs. Evidence on pr_assets @ 5f14a845: h3-tp-adaln-3mod-head-6aaca7d7-h100/.

Tests (pytest tests/models/minimax_h3 tests/build tests/runtime/test_dispatch.py)

  • default build: 636 passed, 3 skipped
  • KERNEL_ALIGN_USE_FAST_MATH=1 build: 189 passed, 450 skipped
  • 4-GPU test_h3_tp_adaln.py: 20 passed, 1 skipped in 32.82s

WS2 (h3_ws2_evidence.py --worlds 1,2,4): tp=1, tp=2 and tp=4 are byte-equal to WS1 on every rank and case (report.json). World 8 was not run: single-node 4 GPUs only; deterministic collective uses CUDA IPC on one node.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 6aaca

No functional defect in the production kernels remains. Several documentation statements and a few tests and evidence tools are inaccurate or fragile. Fix them before or soon after merge. None of them affects kernel numerics.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c7223

A new lower-level GPU call accepts unchecked indexing metadata that can cause out-of-bounds reads or GPU faults. Normal validated calls construct safe metadata, and no remote attack path was established. Distributed execution also depends on trusted participants and caller-managed recovery.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The newly exported native row-gather backward API trusts caller-supplied tile metadata before raw GPU indexing. Tile boundaries index sorted_pos, sorted positions index grad, and segment boundaries index partial without value bounds or same-device validation. Direct in-process callers can bypass the Python metadata producer and trigger out-of-bounds reads or CUDA faults. The normal Python wrapper constructs bounded metadata on the index device; no remote or cross-tenant reachability was established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced memory-access concern requires an in-process caller of the native extension. Its demonstrated scope is GPU memory and execution accessible to that CUDA context; source evidence does not establish access to another tenant, service, data store, or environment. TP intentionally shares the full projection table and gradient partials with collective members, so those members must belong to the same trusted computation.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A direct native caller can supply correctly typed metadata containing an out-of-range sorted position, tile interval, or segment boundary. The checks accept its representation, after which CUDA kernels use those values as raw offsets. Possible outcomes include returning values derived from out-of-allocation reads or faulting the context. The normal wrapper does not expose arbitrary tile metadata, and no end-to-end external exploit was demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Weight preparation downloads manifest-selected files at a pinned revision and verifies file hashes before parsing shards. Extracted tensor dtype, shape, and raw-byte hashes are checked before writing. The loader uses safetensors and repeats tensor checks before transferring requested weights to the target device. The bundled manifest and local execution environment remain trusted inputs.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The reused collective serializes calls with an instance lock and validates operation, shape, and dtype signatures within its process group. This supports ordered normal execution, but does not establish cross-instance ordering, identical gradient contents, or recovery after a participant stops. The new TP operator inherits these caller-managed constraints rather than adding fault-tolerant execution.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Enforce the backward metadata contract at the native boundary: require metadata on the gradient device and validate sorted positions, tile intervals, and segment boundaries before raw indexing. Alternatively, keep metadata construction inside a non-bypassable native operation.

Addressed the standalone documentation nitpick from review 5464611830 in bde1d8d:

Added the T=4 forward+backward row to docs/operators/h3-tp-adaln-3mod.md, using the slowest rank in the committed TP report: WS1 2.09 ms, TP2 1.83 ms, TP4 1.57 ms, TP8 1.45 ms. TP2's raw value is 1.826928 ms, which rounds to 1.83 ms at the table's precision.

All five inline findings have separate replies on their respective threads. Fixes and refreshed backward-only B200 reports/figures are pushed in bde1d8d and 4c1744a. Validation: native extension rebuilt; 252 tests passed and 3 skipped across the targeted CPU/GPU runs (one optional matplotlib test in the test environment, plus TP4/TP8 on this two-GPU machine). Both evidence figures were separately regenerated with the available matplotlib environment. The real TP2 NCCL test passed; the prior TP4/TP8 evidence was not rerun.

h3_enabled only accounts for the three env vars checked by _external_relaxed_math(), but the H3 sources land in the same rl_engine._C extension as every other operator and are compiled with the same nvcc_flags list. The RL_KERNEL_H3_STRICT path (envs.h3_strict_cuda_flags) is not consulted here at all, and any relaxed flag that arrives without one of those env vars (e.g. an -D__FAST_MATH__-style define injected through another env helper, or a relaxed flag added to nvcc_flags above) leaves h3_enabled true while the H3 .cu files are built with relaxed math. The result is a build that claims bitwise parity and ships a module exposing h3_* symbols that no longer match the reference, instead of falling back to the PyTorch reference. Please derive h3_enabled from the final flag set that is actually handed to the compiler (i.e. after all appends, including the external ones PyTorch's BuildExtension adds) rather than from a partial env-only predicate.

Not changed. Every relaxing flag this build can contain arrives through the three channels the predicate reads: the local nvcc list adds --use_fast_math only when use_fast_math is set (the same variable that gates h3_enabled), RL_KERNEL_H3_STRICT flags belong to the separate _H3_C attention extension and never reach the sources of _C, and BuildExtension adds --expt-relaxed-constexpr/-D__CUDA_NO_HALF_* style flags that do not touch FP32 math (-D__FAST_MATH__ is not an nvcc option). To keep that true, test_no_flag_built_here_relaxes_math_while_the_h3_define_is_set (ac225c7) runs the predicate over the final nvcc list handed to the compiler, so a relaxed flag added to the list later cannot ship together with the H3 define. While checking this I found a real gap in the environment channel and fixed it: nvcc expands --options-file/-optf (a comma-separated list) itself, also when it comes from NVCC_APPEND_FLAGS, and the predicate read only @file, which nvcc 13.0 does not expand. NVCC_APPEND_FLAGS='--options-file flags.txt' with --use_fast_math inside built the H3 kernels with approximated math; fixed in ac225c7, with an nvcc --dryrun oracle test that compares the predicate with the cicc flags nvcc would use for every spelling.

…els out, and keep the sinusoid sources self-contained

* NVCC_*_FLAGS can switch fast math on through `--options-file` / `-optf` (a comma-separated list,
  as `--options-file=a,b` or `--options-file a,b`): nvcc expands those files itself, while it does
  not expand `@file`. The predicate read only the `@file` spelling, so
  `NVCC_APPEND_FLAGS="--options-file flags.txt"` with `--use_fast_math` inside built the H3
  kernels with approximated math. Both spellings are read now; a file that cannot be opened, or an
  option nvcc rejects for lack of a file name, counts as relaxed (the build would fail anyway).
* The build warning names the variable and the reason (`NVCC_APPEND_FLAGS contains --ftz true`,
  `... cannot read options file ...`, `... cannot be parsed`), so an unreadable value is not
  mistaken for a relaxed one.
* A test uses nvcc as the oracle: `nvcc --dryrun` prints the cicc flags it would use, and the
  predicate must agree with them for every spelling in the list (plain, split, dashes, options
  files, nested files, PREPEND and APPEND). Another test checks the nvcc list handed to the
  compiler: a relaxed flag in it and the H3 define never appear together.
* The dispatch fallback test removes the symbol from the extension (instead of replacing the
  probe) and checks that the CUDA backend was rejected.
* `timestep_sinusoid.cu` includes <algorithm> for std::min; `frequencies_fp32` rejects an odd or
  non-positive channel count like the validator; the H3 block of `_C.pyi` says the symbols exist
  only in builds that compile the H3 sources.

…n the device and K = 0 behaviour of det_linear

* `timestep_mlp` backward passes `with_bias=` to `det_linear_backward_weight`, so the bias fold of a
  layer whose weight alone needs a gradient is not run and not allocated (`adaln_modulation` already
  did this). A test freezes each input in turn, compares the remaining gradients bitwise with the
  all-trainable run and records the `with_bias` argument of every call.
* The det_linear entry points are registered as plain function pointers; the `CUDAGuard` inside each
  of them is what puts the launch on the tensors' device. A two-GPU test calls forward and both
  backwards with the tensors on cuda:1 while cuda:0 is current and compares the bytes with the same
  call on cuda:0, for FP32 and BF16.
* `h3_det_linear_backward_weight` with K = 0 returns an empty dW and the real bias gradient (the
  column sums of grad); a test pins that, so an early return for K = 0 cannot hand back an
  uninitialised bias.

…jection bias fold, reject a weight without rows

* `det_linear_device_supported` returns False where torch raises (an index outside this host's
  devices, a device string it cannot parse, a CUDA runtime that fails to start), so a constructor
  that uses it falls back to the PyTorch reference instead of failing; integer indices keep working
  (`torch.device(0)` is `cuda:0`). Tests cover each case.
* `adaln_projection` backward passes `with_bias=` to `det_linear_backward_weight`, like the fused
  modulation op, so the bias fold does not run when only the weight needs a gradient. A test freezes
  each input in turn, compares the remaining gradients bitwise with the all-trainable run and
  records the argument of every call.
* `adaln_hidden_size` rejects a (0, D) weight: it divided by 18 and gave H = 0 and six empty outputs.
* `det_linear.cu`: the two FP32 launch-shape knobs (`H3_FWD_F32_COLS`, `H3_FWD_F32_AHEAD`) must be
  overridden together; a build that sets one fails in the preprocessor with that message instead of
  with an undeclared identifier. The test runs the preprocessor on stand-ins for the torch headers.
* `h3_bitwise_reuse._compare_case` records a different number of outputs as a difference (a bare zip
  stopped at the shorter list and could call the case bitwise equal) and zips strictly otherwise.

…d show the device asserts survive a release build

* The tile-metadata pre-pass also requires `seg_first_tile[0] == 0` and `seg_first_tile[R] == tiles`.
  The old bound (`<= tiles`) kept every read inside `partial`, but a tile that no segment owns, or
  a first segment that starts after tile 0, would drop contributions from a row's sum without an
  error. Two more corrupted-metadata cases run in the child-process test. The launch uses at least
  one block, so an empty list is a no-op instead of an invalid configuration.
* `CUDA_KERNEL_ASSERT` is not removed by NDEBUG on CUDA (c10 expands it to
  `if (!cond) __assert_fail(...)`; only Android, Apple and FreeBSD compile it out). The header says
  so, and `test_h3_assert_in_release_build.py` compiles a one-kernel program with `-O3 -DNDEBUG`
  against the torch headers in use and requires the "device-side assert triggered" stop (and a
  clean run for a valid value) so the claim is checked for the torch this runs against.
* `test_backward_writes_the_requested_dtype_whatever_the_gradient_dtype` pins that the gather
  backward allocates the table gradient in `out_dtype` for FP32, BF16 and FP16 gradients (exact
  integer data, torch.equal against the FP64 sum).
* `_C.pyi`: contracts for `h3_adaln_row_gather_forward` / `_backward`; the modulation tests zip
  strictly (Ruff B905).

…odulation index once before the dweight loop

* `check_xw`, called by every rmsnorm entry point, rejects N or M above INT_MAX (the kernels take N as
  `int` and launch one block per row), and the modulated backward bounds the table rows and tiles it
  launches as blocks. A test allocates a (1, 2**31) FP16 row and checks forward and backward.
* The per-row `CUDA_KERNEL_ASSERT` on the modulation index inside `rmsnorm_dweight_partial_kernel` cost
  about 11% of the modulated backward (A/B, interleaved min of 300, B200: 1770 -> 1586 us at S = 32768,
  6346 -> 5694 us at S = 131072, 378 -> 371 us at S = 4097 once removed). The loop now reads the index
  unchecked and the entry point runs `h3_tiles::check_index_range` over the S index values first, a
  4 us launch like the tile-metadata pre-pass. The forward and dx kernels keep their once-per-row assert.
  A child-process test requires the device-side assert for negative, past-the-table and far indices in
  both forward and backward, with a valid-index control.
* The backward header states the exact rounding chain of dx (coef = ((rstd*rstd)*rstd)*dot/N, one cast,
  FMA contraction allowed with fixed flags) and that the backward is measured against FP64, not claimed
  bitwise to autograd; the empty `Modulation` initialiser says why `seq` is 1.
* `_C.pyi`: contracts for `h3_rmsnorm_forward` / `h3_rmsnorm_backward`.

…l gradient shape

* `make_gate` refuses a table whose row stride is below N (an expanded table would make every row
  alias the same memory), as the modulation tables already did; `H3GateResidualCudaOp` copies such a
  table to dense rows first, so an expanded gate still works and gives the bytes of its dense copy.
  Views of a wider AdaLN table (unit column stride, larger row stride) go to the kernel unchanged.
* The residual's VJP is the incoming cotangent, which already has the residual's shape because forward
  returns `out.view(residual.shape)`; `ctx.residual_shape` was saved and unused, which read like a
  missing reshape. The return is now `grad.reshape(ctx.residual_shape)` (a no-op for equal shapes,
  and it accepts a non-contiguous gradient where `view` would not), and a test feeds a (B, S, H)
  residual with a transposed cotangent and compares every gradient with the eager VJP bitwise.
* `_C.pyi`: contracts for `h3_gate_residual_forward` / `_backward`.

_validate_indices builds a stand-in of num_timesteps * H3_MODALITY_NUM rows to reuse the gather validator, but the tensor actually fed to h3_adaln_row_gather_forward is table.view(-1, 18 * hidden), i.e. only num_timesteps rows. The real rows never get the shape/range validation the two-op path applies (H3AdaLNRowGatherCudaOp.forward validates rows), and an out-of-range index/tag can reach the native kernel unchecked. Pass the real table/rows shape through validation instead of a stand-in.

Not changed (answered in the previous round for the same lines). The validation runs before the table exists, so it uses a stand-in with the shape of the table the op is about to build: (T, 18H) viewed as (3T, 6H) has 3T rows, which is what the stand-in has, and the same validator range-checks timestep_indices against T and token_tags against 3. The real rows tensor is produced by det_linear_forward inside the op, so its shape is correct by construction and there is nothing to validate on it.

…unknown flag values, bound the options-file read

The relaxed-math check split every shlex word again on whitespace and ';', so
--options-file "my opts.txt" was read as the file 'my' (and a decoy named 'my'
hid the real flags). Quoted words now stay whole for file names and are also
scanned piece by piece for relaxed flags. A value nvcc does not take
(--ftz=yes, --prec-div=no) is reported instead of read as the exact spelling.
Options files are read only if they are regular files of at most 1 MiB, so
/dev/zero or a FIFO cannot hang the configure step.

The unused _external_relaxed_math helper is removed (get_extensions uses
_relaxed_math_reason). The nvcc --dryrun oracle test now also asserts that the
three cicc options are present and which flag sets relax. H3_ADALN_CHUNKS is
the length of H3_ADALN_CHUNK_NAMES, and the sinusoid docstring states the
divisor as half.

check_tile_metadata bounded every tile and cut the tile list exactly by segment,
but a gap between tiles (positions dropped from every row's sum) or an overlap
(positions counted twice) passed all of it. Each tile must now start where the
one before it ends, the first at 0 and the last at the number of positions, and
a tile list that is empty over a non-empty sequence is refused on the host.
Mutation tests cover a gap, an overlap, a first tile not at 0, a last tile that
stops short, and the empty list with and without matching segment bounds.

The gate residual backward handed back the cotangent as the residual's gradient
whether or not the residual required one. It now follows needs_input_grad[0],
like the other ports of this group. The tile-metadata mutation test gains a gap,
an overlap and a short last tile, and expects the empty tile list to be refused
on the host.
