Closes #61
…ything here, so none of it has been type-checked or

Already in the repo. The exporter was already shared in packages/runtime. The worker entry points already exported per-activity spans, so only the workflow side, links, allowlist and docs were missing.

Open items you should know about

  • The integration test (fake collector, Temporal local test server, trace-id continuity, parent/child structure, continue-as-new link, silent replay) needs @temporalio/testing. I did not add it to package.json, because I can't regenerate the lockfile and npm ci would break. The test skips itself when the package or the dev server is missing, so in this setup it will skip, not pass. Add the dependency and lockfile entry to make it run.
  • The bundler setup in that test (.js to .ts extension alias, @space/contracts alias) is untested and may need adjusting.
  • KNOWN_LIMITATIONS.md is generated from review-findings.json, so I left OBS-001/OBS-007 untouched.
  • There is no Jaeger screenshot for the PR. That manual check still needs to be done.

PR title: Export Temporal workflow spans over OTLP: one trace from API request to every activity

What changed

  • Workflow spans: a workflow interceptor (workflow-interceptors.ts) does no I/O and records one span per workflow run. Its ids come from uuid4 and workflow time. Attempts, status and reasonCode/category come from existing data.
  • Propagation: the trace context travels in a Temporal header (space-traceparent) to activities, child workflows and continue-as-new runs. Child workflows nest under their parent, and activity spans parent to the workflow span.
  • Replay: a sink (workflow-span-sinks.ts, callDuringReplay: false) turns each record into an OTLP span through the existing exporter. A broken exporter can't fail a workflow task.
  • Worker wiring: tracingWorkerOptions(spans) is used by worker.ts, memory-maintenance-worker.ts and memory-mutation-worker.ts. With SPACE_OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT unset, nothing is added to workfl

Verification

  • Relevant automated tests pass.
  • Linux, macOS, and/or Windows coverage is listed.
  • UI changes include real browser console/network evidence.
  • Every commit has a Signed-off-by: line (Developer Certificate of Origin 1.1), and the contribution is licensed under the MIT License (see CONTRIBUTING.md).
  • No credentials, tokens, personal memory, customer data, private paths, or runtime state are included.
  • Documentation and changelog are updated when behavior changes.
  • Security, migration, resource, and rollback effects are described.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • OTLP tracing now captures workflow runs and activity attempts, including their relationships and outcomes.
    • Trace context carries across workflow, activity, child-workflow, and background-continuation boundaries, with links connecting continued runs.
    • Exported spans include filtered correlation identifiers and exclude sensitive prompt text. Span export remains best-effort and does not affect activity outcomes.
  • Documentation
    • Configuration and observability guides now describe span export settings, exported information, and tracing behavior.

Walkthrough

The change adds OTLP workflow and activity spans for Temporal work, propagates trace context through workflow and activity calls, and records links for continuation traces. It also updates worker setup, span attributes, tests, and observability documentation.

Changes: API-to-Temporal OTLP tracing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Trace context, correlation, and links
apps/api/src/trace-context.ts, apps/worker/src/trace-correlation.ts, apps/worker/src/trace-propagation.ts, apps/worker/src/span-attributes.ts, apps/worker/src/room-background-continuation.ts, packages/contracts/src/schemas.ts, packages/runtime/src/otlp-span-exporter.ts
The API returns its stored traceparent. Worker helpers encode and decode Temporal trace headers, extract identifier-only correlation data, and filter span attributes. Background continuations add a fresh trace context and a link to the source span when its traceparent is valid. The input schema and OTLP exporter support continuation context and span links.
Workflow spans and worker setup
apps/worker/src/workflow-interceptors.ts, apps/worker/src/workflow-span-sinks.ts, apps/worker/src/worker.ts, apps/worker/src/memory-*-worker.ts, apps/worker/tests/support/tracing-workflows.ts, apps/worker/tests/workflow-tracing.test.ts, docs/configuration-reference.md, docs/quality/observability.md
Workflow interceptors select parent context, record workflow outcomes, and propagate trace context to activities, child workflows, and continue-as-new runs. Replay-disabled sinks export workflow spans when configured. Worker registration, tracing tests, and observability documentation are updated.
Activity span parentage and recording
apps/worker/src/activity-observability.ts, apps/worker/tests/activity-observability.test.ts, apps/worker/tests/workflow-tracing.test.ts
Activity spans use the propagated header traceparent when available and otherwise use the traceparent in activity arguments. Recorded attributes include allowlisted correlation and activity execution data. Span-recording errors do not change activity completion.

Turning on OTLP export could make in-flight Temporal workflows fail replay with a nondeterminism error. The only end-to-end test of the new tracing currently never runs, and the replay-compatibility docs are out of date. Fix the span-ID generation, make the integration test actually run, and update the docs before merging.

Explanation

The changed source, tests, contracts, and documentation support issue #61. Worker wiring, workflow tracing, propagation, span links, attribute filtering, and exporter integration are within the issue scope. No CLI Host, Browser Host, metrics/log export, sampling, or database trace-ID changes are present in the reviewed summary.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #61 has a concrete unmet coding requirement. The integration test must run with @temporalio/testing and a Temporal test environment. apps/worker/package.json does not declare @temporalio/testing. The test catches import or server failures and calls context.skip(), so the required trace continuity, parent/child, continue-as-new, and replay checks can be skipped. The PR description also states that type-checking and test execution were not completed. The reviewed changes otherwise cover the worker wiring, workflow sink, propagation, allowlist, links, shared exporter use, and documentation described by #61.

Resolution

Add @temporalio/testing and its lockfile entry. Make the integration test run in the supported worker test setup instead of skipping because the required package is absent. Run the relevant type-check and worker/API tests, and correct any bundler or test failures.

Update the stale "Workflow code is unchanged" and "Replay compatibility" statements.

This change adds workflow interceptors through interceptors.workflowModules. It also adds a replay-disabled sink. The new text on Lines 223-246 describes both. These lines still say the workflow code is unchanged. They also say that no file the workflow bundle imports was changed.

That is no longer true when SPACE_OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT is set. The documented bundle comparison and the live replay check do not cover the interceptor-enabled bundle.

Rewrite these paragraphs. State that the interceptor is bundled only when the exporter is on. State that the replay check must be run with the exporter on.

Do not draw span IDs from the workflow PRNG.

newSpanId() calls the workflow uuid4() before workflow code runs. The workflow later calls uuid4() to create continuationId. If the interceptor is added or removed between workflow replays, the PRNG sequence changes and can produce different command arguments, which can cause a nondeterminism failure.

Derive the span ID from workflowInfo().runId instead, and remove the uuid4 import.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Do not skip the integration test on every setup error.

Issue #61 requires this test. @temporalio/testing is not in apps/worker/package.json, so import("@temporalio/testing") always fails. The test always skips. The workflow, child-workflow, continue-as-new and replay assertions never run in CI.

The bare catch also hides other setup failures. Examples are a failed dev-server download and a broken createLocal.

Add @temporalio/testing as a dev dependency. Get the agreement that issue #61 requires first. Skip only on ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND, or when an explicit opt-out env var is set. Let other errors fail the test.

Proposed change
     try {
       testing = await import("@temporalio/testing");
-      env = await testing.TestWorkflowEnvironment.createLocal();
-    } catch {
-      context.skip();
-      return;
-    }
+    } catch (error) {
+      if ((error as { code?: string }).code !== "ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND") throw error;
+      context.skip();
+      return;
+    }
+    if (process.env.SPACE_SKIP_TEMPORAL_INTEGRATION === "1") { context.skip(); return; }
+    env = await testing.TestWorkflowEnvironment.createLocal();

Based on learnings: "missing required setup, fixtures, or infrastructure should cause a clear failure rather than a silent skip or pass".
