Export worker/workflow OTLP spans: one trace from API request to Temporal activities (#61) - #355
Adds optional OTLP/HTTP JSON span export from every Temporal worker so one API request that starts Temporal work shows as one connected trace: API SERVER span → workflow span → each activity attempt (child workflows nest under their parent).
Uses the existing zero-dependency exporter shared in @space/runtime. No OpenTelemetry SDK and no @temporalio/interceptors-opentelemetry.
Integration test with fake OTLP HTTP collector + @temporalio/testing
No new tracing dependency

The change carries trace context from API workflow starters into Temporal and adds workflow and activity span export. It adds span-link support and attribute sanitization, configures Temporal workers with workflow observability, and adds integration tests and documentation.
Changes: API-to-Temporal OTLP tracing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
API trace propagation packages/contracts/src/schemas.ts, apps/api/src/trace-context.ts, apps/api/src/dot-goals.ts, apps/api/src/memory-consolidation-coordinator.ts, apps/api/src/memory-mutation-coordinator.ts, apps/api/src/room-agent.ts
Memory workflow schemas accept optional traceparent. API coordinators pass available trace context and correlation memo data into workflow starts and supervisor signals.
OTLP span contracts and sanitization packages/runtime/src/otlp-span-exporter.ts
The exporter supports span links and sanitizes span and link attributes. It filters invalid parent and link identifiers before recording or serialization.
Workflow spans and trace propagation apps/worker/src/workflow-observability-interceptors.ts, apps/worker/src/workflow-observability.ts, apps/worker/src/worker.ts, apps/worker/src/memory-maintenance-worker.ts, apps/worker/src/memory-mutation-worker.ts
Workflow interceptors derive identifiers, extract correlation data, propagate trace headers, and emit start and finish records outside replay. Workers configure the workflow interceptors and sinks.
Activity spans and tracing validation apps/worker/src/activity-observability.ts, apps/worker/tests/*, apps/worker/package.json, docs/configuration-reference.md, docs/quality/observability.md
Activity spans use workflow trace context and sanitized attributes. Tests cover span relationships, retries, continuation links, replay, and sensitive-data filtering. Documentation describes OTLP export and coverage.

oll4com/spaceapp#61 — The issue’s stated OTLP export objectives overlap with the API propagation, Temporal workflow and activity spans, replay handling, and collector tests in this change.
Possibly related PRs
oll4com/spaceapp#319 — Implements the same API-to-Temporal OTLP tracing behavior across the coordinators, workers, and exporter.
oll4com/spaceapp#352 — Covers the same workflow and activity trace hierarchy, including interceptors, sinks, and exporter behavior.
oll4com/spaceapp#334 — Adds workflow OTLP spans and trace propagation to activities, child workflows, and continue-as-new runs.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 06f78
Workflow tracing can report inaccurate durations, trace relationships, or continuation outcomes. The issues are bounded to observability, so the change is mergeable with owner awareness and follow-up.

Do not apply a new signal trace to an open supervisor span.
When an active supervisor has an explicit trace, handleSignal can replace traceId, parentSpanId, and flags from a second signal. Later activity headers and emitFinish then use the new trace, while the span start used the original trace.

const beforeExplicit = hasExplicitTrace;
- applyTraceInput(input.args, input.headers);+ if (!beforeExplicit || spanEmitted) applyTraceInput(input.args, input.headers);

Do not emit CONTINUED_AS_NEW before next(input).
Temporal signals successful Continue-As-New by throwing ContinueAsNew. The inbound interceptor already handles that error. If delegation fails during continuation setup, the inbound interceptor records FAILED, but the earlier outbound emission has already set spanEmitted and suppresses the failure span.

Review comment at @apps/worker/src/workflow-observability-interceptors.ts around
lines 442 - 453:
Remove the emitFinish("CONTINUED_AS_NEW") call from the continueAsNew method and
preserve delegation through next(input); let the inbound interceptor handle
successful continuation and failure reporting.

review. Visit https://docs.coderabbit.ai/cli?utm_source=ghpr
Fall back to Temporal runStartTime when the in-memory start timestamp
was lost because workflowStarted is skipped during history replay.
