fix(transfer): take the local file's time from what carried its bytes - #1466
After a refused parallel download the local file kept the time of the listing, read before the refusal. The refusal is the evidence that the listing may describe another object, so the file carried the bytes of the new object with the time of the old one, and a later sync compared against the wrong time.
Change
The time for the local file now comes from what carried its bytes, and only after a refusal. A plain download keeps the listing's time, because sync compares against it.
DownloadTime holds the time of the object read. take_download_time(source_refused) hands it over once, and only after a refusal, the provider's own or the caller's.
expect_moved_source() tells the provider that the next download answers a refusal it cannot see. Every provider with a record then reads one stream: one consistent view of an object that moved, and the time that goes with it. The native parallel path is no longer retried after a refusal.
Sources: S3 x-amz-meta-mtime then Last-Modified (same as stat, the mismatch was found live on MinIO); WebDAV and Azure Last-Modified; B2 x-bz-upload-timestamp; SFTP the stat next to the open, or fstat on the handle after a refusal (a failed fstat clears the time); FTP and Koofr two readings around the stream that must agree, because their transfers carry no comparable time. The crypt and compress overlays forward both calls.
HttpRangeAttempt::Refused is distinct from Fallback, so a refusal is not read as an ordinary fallback.
Hardening found along the way:
FTP time_reading is MLST only and bounded to 30 s. A reading that runs out gives up the session, because its reply is still owed and the next command would read it as its own answer. The download reconnects before going on.
S3 parse_mtime_metadata uses checked arithmetic: a huge server-supplied value could overflow.
The Legacy GUI route takes the time under the same provider lock as the download.
docs/COMMAND-INVENTORY.json was missing compare_paths_left_out on main, which fails the inventory check; regenerated.
Tests
New unit and fixture tests per provider (a_download_time_is_handed_over_only_after_a_refusal, the_time_of_what_carried_the_bytes_replaces_the_one_read_before, the_metadata_node_uses_the_time_a_provider_fallback_read, a_refused_download_reports_the_time_of_what_carried_its_bytes, a_download_after_a_refusal_reads_one_stream, a_download_reads_the_time_a_stat_reads, FTP a_download_after_a_refusal_keeps_the_time_both_readings_agree_on, a_time_reading_that_runs_out_gives_up_the_session).
Live, release CLI, lab MinIO: a 40 MB object dated 2026-01-15 replaced during get --segments 4 by a 2 MB object dated 2026-03-20. The parallel read was refused, fell back to one stream, and the local file holds the new bytes with the new object's date.
Not tested live
Koofr's two readings, SFTP fstat after a refusal and the GUI paths as Tauri commands are covered by fixtures or by reading only. A resume keeps the listing's time: it never follows a refusal, because partial_offset > 0 skips the segmented attempt that could raise one.
Review notes
CodeRabbit CLI asked several times whether B2Provider's derived Clone shares download_time. It does not: DownloadTime::clone returns a fresh record, and share() is the explicit way to share one. Reviewed together with the stacked row 119 change.

Bug Fixes
Improved the accuracy of modification times preserved on downloaded files. When a download falls back from parallel to single-stream transfer, the app now uses timestamp information associated with the content actually downloaded when available, with existing metadata as a fallback.
Applied this behavior across supported storage connections and download workflows, including resumed downloads.

Walkthrough
Download providers now track modification times associated with downloaded bytes and distinguish source-refused range attempts from other fallbacks. Transfer paths can signal moved-source handling and use recorded times when preserving local file modification times.
Changes: Download timestamp handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Download time and refusal contract src-tauri/src/providers/mod.rs, src-tauri/src/providers/multi_thread.rs
StorageProvider adds hooks for moved-source expectations and retrieving download times. DownloadTime records validated timestamps and refusal state. HTTP range attempts distinguish refused reads from other fallbacks.
These providers record response timestamps after successful file commits. Their download and resume paths initialize timing state and handle refused parallel reads. Tests cover timestamp extraction and refusal cases.
Metadata checks after refusal src-tauri/src/providers/ftp.rs, src-tauri/src/providers/koofr.rs, src-tauri/src/providers/sftp.rs
These providers use remote metadata to select or verify modification times around fallback reads. Their tests cover moved-source behavior and timestamp or size selection.
Transfer fallback and timestamp preservation src-tauri/src/bin/aeroftp_cli.rs, src-tauri/src/compress_overlay_provider.rs, src-tauri/src/crypt_overlay_provider.rs, src-tauri/src/provider_commands.rs, src-tauri/src/provider_transfer_executor.rs, src-tauri/src/transfer_bulk.rs, src-tauri/src/transfer_dag_single_file.rs
Transfer paths track range refusals, signal moved-source expectations, and retrieve provider timestamps after successful downloads. Local modification-time preservation prefers the provider timestamp where available. Overlay providers forward the new hooks.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 199eb
Downloads after a refused parallel read can still get the wrong local modification time. This happens on retry, in concurrent GUI transfers, in CLI fallbacks, and in some GUI paths without a caller time. SFTP can also mix partial content in a narrow case. Fix these before merging; the remaining Koofr and FTP timeout edge cases are accepted tradeoffs.

Give the refusal test a Last-Modified value that differs from the planning HEAD.
The pin_server fixture sends the same Last-Modified on the HEAD, the windows, and the whole-object GET. The assertion on take_download_time(false) therefore cannot tell a time taken from the planning HEAD from a time taken from the GET that carried the bytes. Serve a distinct Last-Modified on the GET and the windows, keep the HEAD's value, and assert the GET's value. Check other tests that use the same fixture for assertions on the shared value.

other tests using the fixture that assert the shared value.
Add a test that exercises the provider-refusal FSTAT time path.
a_download_keeps_the_time_it_read_for_a_caller_that_saw_a_refusal sets no provider-side refusal, so source_is_moving stays false. The handle-time branch in download_with_size_hint (src-tauri/src/providers/sftp.rs:3166-3172) does not run. The test fixture also returns the same mtime from every stat read and does not override fstat. A change that returns a wrong time from that branch, or removes the branch, would not change any assertion in the suite.
Add a test that:
puts the provider into the refused state before download, so the branch at sftp.rs:3166-3172 runs;
makes fstat on the opened handle return an mtime that differs from the one stat returns, which requires an fstat override in the ReadCappingServer fixture;
asserts that the time returned by take_download_time equals the fstat value.

return an mtime distinct from stat, ensuring the download_with_size_hint
handle-time branch is exercised.
Add a B2 test for the provider-detected refusal handoff.
The new test calls take_download_time(true) itself, so it never reaches the Ok(false) branch that calls self.download_time.refused() at b2.rs:3103. No other B2 test calls parallel_download_if_unchanged or take_download_time. Removing the refused() call would leave the B2 tests passing.
Add a test that runs a native parallel download the source refuses. Then assert that take_download_time(false) returns the timestamp of the single-stream response. The S3 test at s3.rs:12509 covers a similar refusal handoff and can serve as a model.

Add a same-attempt refusal case to the carried-time test.
The test at src-tauri/src/provider_transfer_executor.rs:4383-4385 sets source_refused directly and calls download_attempt at attempt 1. The segmented branch runs only at attempt 0, so this call never reaches the production write at line 1447.
Removing that write leaves the test passing. The flag stays false through the fallback. expect_moved_source() is then skipped at line 1468, and the test provider's take_download_time(false) returns None at line 3565. entry.modified keeps the listed time.
Add a case where a segmented refusal occurs on attempt 0. The refusal does not end the attempt. The same call continues into a single-stream download, so assert entry.modified on that call's result. Do not wait for a retry. Use distinct listing and carried times so a missed replacement is visible.
The test comment at line 4367 says the replacement happens "only after a refusal." The test does not produce a refusal, so the comment and the test name describe more coverage than the test provides.

Fixed in part, and the rest answered. The reading is bounded to 30 s, and one that runs out gives up the session so its late reply cannot be read by the next command. The remaining case is a reading cut by the executor's whole-download deadline: it needs a refusal, a server that stalls on MLST right after the body, and a body that finished within the last 30 s of a budget of at least timeout + size / 50 KB/s. The outcome is one more download of a correct file. Moving the reading out of the download future would make it a second session-owning step in every caller for this one case, so this stays as is.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@axpnet Understood. The supplied code bounds time_reading to 30 seconds and drops the session when that timeout expires. That handles the reading’s own timeout without failing the committed download.
The executor-deadline case remains, but you have explicitly accepted that trade-off. I will not press for a separate session-owning step in each caller. This is a partial fix with an accepted limitation, not a complete fix of the original finding.

Keep the post-commit stat from running inside the download deadline.
The metadata request at src-tauri/src/providers/koofr.rs:999-1004 runs after atomic.commit() but inside the future that the executor wraps in tokio::time::timeout. If that request runs past the remaining budget, the executor reports Download timed out for a file that is already published. The caller can then retry and download the file again.
A fixed 10-second bound on the stat does not prevent this. If the body finishes less than 10 seconds before the deadline, the 10-second timer outlasts the deadline, and the executor still times out.
The time reading is best-effort. The executor already keeps the listing time when a reading fails. Move the reading out of the deadline-bounded future, or limit it to the budget that remains. A slow reading should not turn a committed download into a failure.

Not changing this one. It runs only after a refusal, and it needs a metadata request that outlasts what is left of a budget of at least timeout + size / 50 KB/s. The file is already published and the outcome is one more download of a correct file, not a wrong one. The reading has no way to know the caller's remaining budget, and moving it outside download would make every caller responsible for Koofr's reading.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@axpnet Understood. The post-commit stat runs only after a refusal, and keeping it inside download keeps Koofr-specific metadata handling in the provider. The possible timeout and repeat download remain an accepted tradeoff. I will not press for this change.
After a refused parallel read the single stream can read another object than any listing saw, and the local file kept the listing's time. A fallback inside a provider could not even tell its caller. A newer replacement was downloaded again on the next sync; one dated before the listing made the file look newer, so a sync skipped the remote.
`take_download_time` hands over the time of the object really read, only after a refusal, the provider's own or the caller's. S3, WebDAV and Azure read it from the response, B2 from `x-bz-upload-timestamp`, SFTP from the stat next to the open or from the handle after a refusal, Koofr from a reading before the stream because its listing holds the uploader's time, and FTP from two MLST readings around RETR that must agree, since RETR carries no time. A plain download keeps the listing's time, the one a sync compares it with. The batch executor, the GUI, the DAG, bulk fallback, CLI `get`, `sync` and `pget` all use it, and the crypt and compress overlays forward it.

On the four nitpicks of the review of fc969fc, all in 5b820ea unless said otherwise:
S3 refusal test: the fixture's whole read now has its own Last-Modified (WHOLE_READ_TIME), and the S3 and WebDAV tests assert it.
SFTP fstat: ReadCappingServer answers fstat with its own time, and a_download_after_a_refusal_takes_the_time_of_its_handle asserts it.
Executor: a_refusal_of_the_windows_reaches_the_stream_of_the_same_attempt runs a refusal on attempt 0 and asserts the entry's time from the same call.
B2: not done as asked. A native refusal needs a mock of B2's API for the size probe and the reading. a_download_after_a_refusal_reads_one_stream covers the caller's refusal, and the refused() call after Ok(false) stays without its own B2 test; the same step is proven on S3 and WebDAV.

Compare the handle size with total_size before the serial download commits.
The serial path takes its size from a pathname STAT, then opens the file. A replacement between these calls makes the copy loop stop at the old size, and the commit publishes the result unchecked. The refusal refresh narrows this window. The window predates this PR.

In the serial download path, validate the opened handle’s size against
total_size before committing the downloaded result; if they differ, do not
publish the unchecked copy. Keep the existing source_is_moving refusal refresh
and close_preopened! handling intact.
Assert the executor notifies the provider after a refusal.
Assert the executor notifies the provider after a refusal.
When source_refused is set, the executor calls provider.expect_moved_source() at src-tauri/src/provider_transfer_executor.rs:1469. FlakyDownloadProvider does not override this hook, so the call has no effect on the mock. The test asserts only source_refused, entry.modified, and the file content. Removing the call leaves the test passing. Record the call in the mock and assert it in this test.
Add a bool field to FlakyDownloadProvider, default it to false in its constructor, and set it in an override of the hook:

Update the FlakyDownloadProvider mock to record calls to expect_moved_source,
initializing the tracking field to false and setting it to true in the hook

The serial path took its size from a STAT and then read the handle, so a replacement between the two was published cut to the old length, or resumed against a record of the old object. The handle now gives the size, the source fingerprint and the time; a server that does not answer leaves the STAT's values, except for the time after a refusal. The executor test now proves the provider is told about a refusal.

…des and fallbacks
The executor now carries a refusal inside the provider into the retry of the same entry, which used to forget it and keep the listed time. The single-file graph takes the provider's time under the lock of the download node and applies it with no time given too. A pget fallback changes the listed time only after a refusal. An SFTP handle with another time and no size is read to its end, and no part of the old object is kept.

A failed stream returned before the refusal was recorded, so the executor could not tell the retry of the entry and the retry read the moved object in windows.

A download that the segmented engine turned down because the source moved under it is read again on one stream, and that second read is the one the caller must date the file by: SCP now keeps the download-time record that SFTP, FTP and the cloud providers keep since #1466, and joins the same class. It records the time of what it actually read (the `scp -f` header time, or the stat of a complete partial or a ranged read), says when the source was refused, and hands the time over only for the read that follows the refusal, once.
- A download expected to meet a moved source is not split into windows, so it reads the file once on one stream.
- An SFTP profile that went on over SCP forwards the record to SCP.
- Test: after a refusal, a plain download reports the refusal, runs one `scp -f` and hands over the time the server sent, only once; without a refusal nothing is handed over. Mutation-checked: dropping the recorded time fails it.

Problem
After a refused parallel download the local file kept the time of the listing, read before the refusal. The refusal is the evidence that the listing may describe another object, so the file carried the bytes of the new object with the time of the old one, and a later sync compared against the wrong time.
Change
The time for the local file now comes from what carried its bytes, and only after a refusal. A plain download keeps the listing's time, because sync compares against it.
DownloadTimeholds the time of the object read.take_download_time(source_refused)hands it over once, and only after a refusal, the provider's own or the caller's.expect_moved_source()tells the provider that the next download answers a refusal it cannot see. Every provider with a record then reads one stream: one consistent view of an object that moved, and the time that goes with it. The native parallel path is no longer retried after a refusal.x-amz-meta-mtimethenLast-Modified(same as stat, the mismatch was found live on MinIO); WebDAV and AzureLast-Modified; B2x-bz-upload-timestamp; SFTP the stat next to the open, or fstat on the handle after a refusal (a failed fstat clears the time); FTP and Koofr two readings around the stream that must agree, because their transfers carry no comparable time. The crypt and compress overlays forward both calls.HttpRangeAttempt::Refusedis distinct fromFallback, so a refusal is not read as an ordinary fallback.Hardening found along the way:
time_readingis MLST only and bounded to 30 s. A reading that runs out gives up the session, because its reply is still owed and the next command would read it as its own answer. The download reconnects before going on.parse_mtime_metadatauses checked arithmetic: a huge server-supplied value could overflow.docs/COMMAND-INVENTORY.jsonwas missingcompare_paths_left_outon main, which fails the inventory check; regenerated.Tests

Koofr's two readings, SFTP fstat after a refusal and the GUI paths as Tauri commands are covered by fixtures or by reading only. A resume keeps the listing's time: it never follows a refusal, because
