Core should work and read the same with no Package installed. After the playerbots extraction, Core comments still named playerbots and its tables in 20 files, and nothing stopped a new mention. Nothing in Core CI built the official Packages either. A Core change could break playerbots, and nobody would see it until the next packages PR.

This PR locks the extraction in:

  • Comments. Every non-test Core mention of playerbots now describes the capability: a session-less Character, a Package bot, a Package's auto-accept hook. No table or column changed name.
  • package_name_tripwire in module/src/tripwires.rs. It walks module/, gateway/, crates/ and importer/ and fails on any line that contains a name from OFFICIAL_PACKAGES. Comments and the generated Gateway bindings count. Test files (tests/, *_tests.rs, tests.rs) are exempt. The list holds playerbots only, because Core still names the dungeons Package and Deadmines. Core still names the dungeons Package, so its name tripwire cannot cover it yet #633 tracks that.
  • official-packages job in rust.yml. It checks out packages main, links each Package into packages/, and runs the same wasm cargo check as the wasm job. Build only, no durable suite.
  • Package-owned Account names. create_package_character named a new Account <package>#<count of owned Accounts>. An Account that lost its ownership row still holds its name, so the insert failed and the Package could not spawn. The name now skips taken names. A new durable test deletes the ownership row and proves the next Account becomes example#1.

Verification

  • cargo test -p lyracore-module --lib -- package_name_tripwire package_config passes.
  • With // pkg_playerbots_bot appended to gateway/src/stdb/bindings/mod.rs, the tripwire fails with gateway/src/stdb/bindings/mod.rs:15808 names playerbots.
  • cargo clippy -p lyracore-module --lib --tests --features=debug_reducers -- -D warnings is clean.
  • CI runs the new durable test and the official-packages job.

Notes for review

  • ci: refuse a Package API exemption in an official Package packages#76 adds the packages side: a job that fails on any package-api: exempt line.

  • official-packages builds against the packages branch with the same name as the Core branch when one exists, else packages main. A paired Package API change goes green with its packages branch.

  • deploy/lyracore-disk-guard.py still renews the playerbots capacity_until_micros config, and its systemd unit names playerbot capacity. It is Realm host tooling, not Module or Gateway source, so it stays as it is and the tripwire does not scan deploy/. The maintainer chose this.

Fresh dev stack record

I ran this on a disposable sharded stack: a detached checkout of this branch, its own HOME, and a fresh SpacetimeDB data dir. The CLI was the pinned 091b502. No Core file changed at any step.

  1. ./lyracore dev up published four databases (lyracore, lyracore-kalimdor, lyracore-instances, lyracore-realm) and started the Gateway.
  2. ./lyracore packages add playerbots --yes installed packages 20160de and preflight passed. ./lyracore publish updated all four databases.
  3. spacetime call -s local lyracore -- playerbots_spawn 3 -8930.0 -250.0 80.0 spawned Aldric1, Brenna1 and Corwin1 on the Package-owned Account playerbots#0. Each had a live entity on map 0 and a consent row, and next_think_micros advanced, so the brain pass ran.
  4. ./lyracore packages disable playerbots --yes tore down all four Shards and moved the folder. pkg_playerbots_bot held 0 rows. The three bots stayed as offline Characters with no live entity and no consent row. The playerbots Package Config was gone.
  5. ./lyracore publish removed 43 tables on each Shard and updated all four databases. ./lyracore packages replay had nothing to replay.
  6. ./lyracore dev smoke logged in as TEST and entered the world. It needed printf test123 | ./lyracore account create TEST --password-stdin first, as the doc says.
  7. ./lyracore packages enable playerbots and ./lyracore publish updated all four databases.
  8. The same playerbots_spawn 3 call made Aldric2, Brenna2 and Corwin2 on playerbots#0. They had live entities and their brain pass ran. The three Dormant Characters stayed offline. dev smoke passed again.

./lyracore dev down stopped the stack, and I deleted the checkout, its HOME and the data dir.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a Packages repository check to the Rust workflow, changes account creation to skip existing usernames, and updates Package terminology in comments and tests. It also adds a source-scan tripwire for occurrences of the official Package name.

Changes

Packages CI check

Layer / File(s) Summary
Packages checkout and module check
.github/workflows/rust.yml
The workflow checks out the current Packages branch when available, otherwise main. It links package directories and checks the module for wasm32-unknown-unknown with debug_reducers.

Package account naming

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select an unused account name
module/src/package_account.rs, module/tests/package_account.rs
Account creation searches from owned.len() for the first username absent from game_account. An ignored integration test checks the case where example#0 exists but has no ownership record.

Package terminology and source scan

Layer / File(s) Summary
Package terminology and name tripwire
gateway/src/main.rs, gateway/src/world/*, module/src/*
Comments and a test replace playerbot-specific wording with Package or bot terminology. A new tripwire scans source files for case-insensitive playerbots occurrences and exempts its own source and designated test paths.

Disable credential persistence and require an official Package before relying on this new CI job. As written, Package builds can access a Core token, and the job can pass without checking an official Package.

Code review: Standards and Spec

I reviewed head 81bdef2 against main along two axes. The spec is the PR description, because no commit refers to an issue. I found no blocking issues. The main risk is in how the official-packages job links the Packages.

Standards

Hard violations: none against CODING_STANDARDS.md, AGENTS.md or CONTEXT.md. The PR adds no new issue refs or em dashes, and it removes some old work-item refs.

  • Medium: possible Duplicated Code, tripwires.rs collect_files (~L2263). tripwires::collect_rs_files (L250) and test_scan::module_sources::walk already do this walk. The new walker has no extension filter. It reads every file under module/, gateway/, crates/ and importer/ with from_utf8_lossy, and it panics on any directory it cannot read. If a local build dir or data dir lands under one of these trees, the scan gets slow or panics. Suggestion: reuse collect_rs_files, or share one walker that filters on rs/toml/md.
  • Low: one test covers several behaviours. the_scan_reads_comments_and_bindings_but_not_tests checks comment hits, a bindings path and the exemptions in one test. Its name promises "bindings", but it only checks the is_exempt path string. CODING_STANDARDS.md asks for one behaviour per test.
  • Low: possible Speculative Generality, package_account.rs. (owned.len()..).map(..).find(..).expect("an unbounded range holds a free name") is correct. It stops after at most N+1 indexed lookups. A plain counter loop would not need the expect. Nit.
  • Low: comment quality.
    • creatures/tick/mod.rs:978: "spell/cast.rs + a Package file), and the list omitted" reads awkwardly after the rewrite.
    • debug/audit.rs:22 now says "the Goldshire class trainers". Please check that all the entries are Goldshire trainers. If not, "the class trainers" is safer.

Spec

Verified:

  • A case-insensitive grep finds no playerbot in non-test Core outside tripwires.rs.
  • The tripwire lowercases each line, scans comments and bindings, and exempts tests/, *_tests.rs and tests.rs, as described.
  • The final cargo check step matches the wasm job.
  • The new durable test deletes game_package_account and asserts example#1. It is #[ignore], but module-durable.yml runs --ignored, so CI covers it.

Findings:

  • Medium: "links each Package into packages/". ln -s "$PWD/$package" packages/ fails with "File exists" if the packages repo has a top-level example/ or fire_nova/, because Core tracks both. It also links any top-level directory that is not a Package (for example docs/), and build.rs then warns about it. Suggestion: link only directories that contain src/, and skip names that already exist. I could not see the packages repo layout, so please confirm with one run.
  • Medium: "A Core change could break playerbots, and nobody would see it". Nothing in the job proves that a Package was linked. If the glob matches nothing, or the checkout is empty, the job still goes green and checks Core alone. Suggestion: add a guard that fails if no Package was linked, for example by checking that packages/playerbots exists.
  • Low: "Build only". Compile breaks are caught. Package unit tests, and the tripwires that scan packages/*/src, do not run with the official Packages installed. This matches the description, but the job comment says "breaks an official Package fails here", which claims more than a compile check gives.
  • Low: tripwire scope. It matches only playerbots. A new comment that says "playerbot" (singular) passes. CONTEXT.md and docs/ still name playerbots, outside the scanned trees. That may be on purpose.
  • Low scope creep: the doc comment on create_package_character was reworded beyond what the fix needed. Harmless.

Summary: Standards has 4 findings, all judgement calls. The worst is the duplicated, unfiltered file walker in the tripwire. Spec has 5 findings. The worst is the official-packages link step, which can fail on a name collision or go green with no Package linked.

🌐 Web query:

actions/checkout v7.0.1 action.yml persist-credentials default local git config

💡 Result:

In **`actions/checkout@v7.0.1`**, `action.yml` sets:

```yaml
persist-credentials:
  description: 'Whether to configure the token or SSH key with the local git config'
  default: true
```

So credential persistence is **on by default**. The manifest describes configuring the token or SSH key in local Git config; it does not specify the exact config entry or storage mechanism. ([github.com](https://github.com/actions/checkout/blob/v7.0.1/action.yml))

Citations:

- 1: https://github.com/actions/checkout/blob/v7.0.1/action.yml

Disable credential persistence for the Core checkout.

The official Package source is compiled into the Core module. Package API checks explicitly allow include_str! and include_bytes!, so Package source can read the workspace’s .git/config at compile time. The Core checkout leaves its token in that configuration by default. The Packages checkout setting does not remove it.

Set persist-credentials: false on the Core checkout. The existing workflow-level contents: read permission is already the required scope.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Require at least one official Package before checking Core.

If official-packages/*/ matches no directory, the loop can create a dangling link from the literal glob instead of installing a Package. The build script skips that link because it is not a directory, so cargo check can pass without checking any official Package. Check for an expected Package directory before linking, and fail the job when it is absent.
