Fix: Draw a background job as tools, not as waiting on a subagent - #1617
The Timeline pane has one teal state, and its legend calls it "waiting on subagents". A run_in_background shell job was bucketed into that same state, so a session with no
subagents at all still drew green — with no subagent row to point at.
Session 86f71ae7 shows it: agents: 1, returns: 0, but two background jobs
(11:50–12:00, 12:37–12:57). Its teal at ~12:35–12:38 and ~12:48–12:52 was entirely job
time, and 47% of the 12:48 cell.
Fix
A background job is a tool still running, so it now joins the tools bucket:
taken after the model, so a job left running through a reply hides no model;
counted in the tools column by what the bar gives it — a job starts at the request that
acknowledges it, which is the next turn's own start, so its span usually covers that reply,
and counting the whole span would take that reply twice;
counted once in a collapsed idle stretch, whose three cells share one span and draw one;
teal means a subagent again.
The pane's README section is updated to match: a job is amber, a tool still running.
Re-rendering 86f71ae7 after the change: subs total 0, those cells now tools.
Tests
TestTimelineWaits_BackgroundJobIsATool — job time is tools, is not the user's, and grows the
tools total by the 200s the bar gives it.
TestTimelineWaits_BackgroundJobDoesNotHideTheModel — a job overlapping a turn leaves the
turn's model share intact, and the tools total grows by the 100s outside the reply.
TestTimelineWaits_BackgroundJobInACollapsedGapCountedOnce — a job in a collapsed idle stretch
is counted once. It guards the new arithmetic rather than pinning a behaviour change: the old
code counted a gap once by construction, so this one passes on it too.
The first two fail on the old code (tools total grew by 210s and 150s, want 200s and 100s) and
pass now. Full go test ./tui, go vet ./tui, gofmt -l clean.
Known limit, inherited from the drawing: a cell hands out its free fraction to each state
rather than subtracting the intervals the model already owns, so a job lying wholly under a
model call that fills only part of a cell still adds up to one cell's width of amber to the
number. The bar and the number agree; only that boundary cell is coarse.
…bagent
A `run_in_background` shell job is a tool still running, but the pane bucketed
its time with subagent waits — the one state whose legend says "waiting on
subagents" and whose row only exists when a child agent does. A session with
no subagents, such as 86f71ae7, therefore showed green with nothing to point
at: both of its jobs (11:50-12:00, 12:37-12:57) read as subagent time.
A job's span now joins the tools bucket, taken after the model so a job left
running through a reply hides no model, and it counts in the tools column too.
Teal means a subagent again.

Walkthrough
The timeline now excludes background-job intervals from subagent waits and counts them as tool activity. Tests cover job duration totals and intervals that overlap model activity.
Background jobs no longer contribute to subagent waits. Their durations contribute to tool totals and cell shares. The pane description and tests reflect this classification, including when a job overlaps model activity.
rossoctl/cortex#1525: Classifies background shell jobs as subagent-wait time, which this change reclassifies as tool time.
rossoctl/cortex#1524: Adds timeline job data that this change consumes in the TUI.
rossoctl/cortex#1517: Adds the Timeline pane and agent-state layout that this change updates.

Explanation
The title names the main change: background jobs (run_in_background shell jobs) are now counted as tool time instead of as waiting on a subagent. The raw summary confirms that waits no longer include background jobs, that matching jobs are added to each agent's tool-time total, and that the timeline pane comment and tests were updated to match. The title is specific and accurate, and it does not describe anything absent from the changeset. The only minor issue is the 'Fix:' prefix, which is a conventional-commit style marker and does not affect the assessment.

Include background-job ends in subagent row bounds when the job outlives the agent's last completed turn.
A background job can end after its subagent's last completed turn and tool. The launch tool closes when the job starts, so it does not cover the job's tail. When the job end comes from a stranded failure, the row's life bounds stop at that completed turn. The job still adds coverage to toolTime, so the row and the total can disagree. An open turn with no end is drawn to now, so this case does not clip the row.
Extend only the drawing bounds for that agent. Leave the life map unchanged, because waits reads life[k] for child agents.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Exclude occupied intervals before allocating job time.
take(jobs) limits the duration by the remaining share, but does not remove the intervals already occupied by the model or foreground tools. In a 10-second cell with model time from 0–5 seconds and a job from 0–4 seconds, it assigns 4 seconds to tools even though the job is fully covered by model time. This can hide user or subagent time. Subtract the higher-priority intervals before measuring job coverage.

A job's span and a reply overlap: Job.Start is the request that carries the
job's acknowledgement, which is the next turn's own request. The bar gives
that overlap to the model, but the tools column added the job's whole span,
so model + tools could exceed the row's span.
The column now adds the share take() gives the job in each cell, which is
what the bar paints, and only in the cell a collapsed gap draws.
Fixes review:
- The tools total counted a job's whole span while the bar gave shared time to the model.
- A job in a collapsed gap was counted three times, once per undrawn gap cell.
- cmd/agentop/README.md still described a background job as teal, "waiting on its subagents".
Files:
- cmd/agentop/tui/timeline_layout.go: toolTime adds the job's drawn share, marker cell of a gap only
- cmd/agentop/tui/timeline_pane_test.go: both job tests assert what the bar gains; a third pins the gap
- cmd/agentop/README.md: the pane's prose names a background job as a tool still running

Summary
This is a sound fix. Background jobs move out of the subagent bucket and into tools, so teal means a subagent again, and the tools column now counts job time the way the bar draws it. Model time is taken first, so a job left running through a reply hides no model. The collapsed-gap marker-only counting is correct for the 3-cell gap layout. I ran go test ./tui, go vet ./tui and gofmt -l tui locally on a84380e and all are clean. I also checked two edge cases with a throwaway probe test (results inline). Neither blocks the merge.

suggestion: There's an unmentioned priority change here. A job used to sit in subs, which is taken afterretry. Now it's taken before it, so a background job running across a failed-call retry gap paints that gap amber and the red disappears.
I checked this with sampleTimeline() plus a job from 850s to 1000s. The cell at 930s (inside the 900–960s resent gap) goes from {retry:1} to {tool:1}. Users read red as "the model host is failing". A long-running run_in_background job (a dev server or a watch) is exactly the case where it would hide that for the whole session.
That may be intended, since foreground tools also outrank retry. If so, a line in the comment/README and a test pinning it would help. If not, take retry before jobs (tool, model, retry, job, subs, user). That keeps "a job hides no model" and keeps failures visible.

nit: CodeRabbit's double-count point is real, but it's only the per-cell coarseness you already describe under Known limit. t and jobs are separate ivs, so in a boundary cell where a foreground tool overlaps a job, the job takes left and not the uncovered part. A 3s Bash inside an 8s job in one 10s cell adds 7s, where the union would add 5s. Whole cells covered by a foreground tool leave left == 0, so the error stays bounded to about one cell per overlap edge, and the bar agrees with the number. I wouldn't block on this. If you want it exact later, run cover on newIvs(append(tool, js...)) for the cell's tool share and use the remainder after that for the job.
