Fix: Enforce RequiresLater in agentop, harden the live stream, correct stale comments - #1613
1. The plugin-order check didn't know RequiresLater. The check existed in three copies (tui/deps.go ×2, edit/validate.go), none enforcing RequiresLater — so moving inference-parser above litellm-budget-track (which declares RequiresLater: inference-parser) showed DEPS ✓, passed the pre-apply validation, applied, and then rolled back after the proxy refused the reload. That is exactly the error the pre-apply check exists to catch.
requiresLater now rides the wire: pipelinePluginView (/v1/pipeline), CatalogEntry (/v1/plugins, via the catalog adapter), and both apiclient structs.
The ordering rules live in one place — edit.CheckOrder, mirroring the framework's validateRelationships — which both validateChain and the TUI's pluginDepsAllSatisfied call. The two can no longer drift.
The two deps.go per-dep loops folded into one positionStatus helper; the detail pane gained a "Requires later:" section.
2. The live stream degraded three ways (beyond #1542's retention fix):
Backoff never reset.streamLoop's attempt counter incremented on every disconnect and never reset after a successful open — five disconnects hours apart each waited the capped 30s. It now counts consecutive failed connects.
Large events killed the stream. The 4 MiB scanner limit claimed to "match the server's cap", but the server has none — it marshals full inference bodies against a proxy that accepts 32 MiB request bodies. parseSSE now reads through a capped line reader (lineScan): an oversized frame is skipped and the connection survives, instead of ErrTooLong dropping the connection and every event published during the reconnect gap. The comment now states the real bound.
Snapshots overwrote streamed events.snapshotLoadedMsg assigned wholesale, dropping events streamed while the fetch was in flight; it now merges by sequence number (seq-less snapshots from pre-paging proxies still land whole). Pausing with p dropped events silently; resuming now refetches the watched session (watchingSessionID).
3. Stale comments corrected. The layout() "exactly one place / only from the WindowSizeMsg handler" claim was false (five callers incl. pane transitions) — the pane-blind reservation arguments are re-derived on the real reason: no setPane choke point exists. The memory estimate assumed a 1000-event cap that no longer exists. The spend drawer's axis key is a, not g. renderSpendBand is test-facing, not "the form the renderer publishes" — production renders only the styled variant.
tui: DEPS indicator false on RequiresLater misorder and missing; snapshot merge keeps higher-seq streamed events; seq-less snapshot still replaces; resume issues a refetch, no-watch resume doesn't.
apiclient: backoff resets after open (attempt stays 1 across reconnects); a 5 MiB frame no longer kills the connection; lineScan truncates and keeps its position.
Full cmd/agentop suite, core/sessionapi suite, go vet, gofmt, go mod tidy -diff all clean.
Deferred (review round 2)
The snapshot merge compares raw seqs across session incarnations: a session re-created under the same id restarts numbering at 1 after an archive-less restart, so the merge can splice the old incarnation's events on. Cluster-attached agentop only; display-only; self-corrects on the next re-entry.
Held linked-bucket events never merge; a bucket past the 500-event linked-fetch cap, or a failed linked fetch, loses its older events from view until the next snapshot.
lineScan does not strip a trailing \r the way bufio.Scanner did; a CRLF SSE stream would never flush frames. The server writes \n only.
A truncated data: line is still accumulated into dataBuf only to be discarded at flush.
Pipeline plugins can now declare dependencies that must appear later in the chain. Validation and plugin details show whether these dependencies are satisfied.
Improvements
Live event streams recover more reliably after connections open and close, and can continue past oversized event lines.
Session snapshots retain newer streamed events, and resuming a live session refreshes its snapshot when appropriate.
Dependency status messages clarify when a requirement is missing or incorrectly ordered.
…t stale comments
Three agentop problems from rossoctl#1568:
The plugin-order check knew only Requires and RequiresAny, so an edit the
proxy would refuse (inference-parser moved above litellm-budget-track,
whose RequiresLater it violates) passed as clean and applied, then rolled
back after the reload wait. requiresLater now rides /v1/pipeline and
/v1/plugins through apiclient, and the ordering rules live in one place —
edit.CheckOrder — which both the pre-apply validator and the TUI's DEPS
indicator call, so the two cannot drift apart again.
The live stream degraded three ways. The reconnect counter never reset
after a successful open, so five disconnects spread over a day each waited
the capped 30s; it now counts consecutive failed connects. A frame over
the reader's 4 MiB cap killed the connection with ErrTooLong — the server
has no event-size cap, and real long-context events reach past it — so
lines are now read through a capped reader that skips the one oversized
frame instead of dropping the connection and every event published during
the reconnect gap. And a snapshot landing while events streamed replaced
the held list wholesale, dropping what arrived during the fetch; it now
merges by sequence number, and resuming a paused stream refetches the
watched session rather than ending its timeline at the pause point.
Comments that described code which has since changed: layout() was claimed
to run only from the WindowSizeMsg handler (it also runs on drawer toggles
and pane transitions; the reservation arguments are re-derived on the real
reason — no setPane choke point), the memory estimate assumed a 1000-event
cap that no longer exists, the spend drawer's axis key is a not g, and
renderSpendBand was called the renderer's published form when production
renders only the styled variant.

Resuming the live stream in agentop can mix events from an earlier session with a reused ID. It can also leave event detail views without message bodies. These are bounded TUI correctness issues and should be fixed before merge. The dependency-ordering and reconnect changes look sound.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1568 has five coding requirements. Each one is implemented at the reviewed head.
RequiresLater enforcement and shared check. Implemented. edit/validate.go adds CheckOrder, which covers Requires, RequiresLater and RequiresAny. validateChain calls it. tui/deps.go pluginDepsAllSatisfied calls edit.CheckOrder, and the three per-dep loops are folded into positionStatus. pluginHasAnyDeps counts RequiresLater. The wire fields are added to apiclient structs, core/sessionapi server.go and catalog_adapter.go (per the change summary). Tests cover the satisfied, missing and misordered cases, including the issue's inference-parser/litellm-budget-track case.
Backoff reset. Implemented. streamOnce returns opened, and streamLoop sets attempt to 0 after an open. The counter counts consecutive failed connects. A test covers this (per the change summary).
Oversized events. Implemented at the minimum level the issue allows. The issue proposes streaming the summary projection, with skipping the oversized frame as the minimum. parseSSE uses lineScan with a 32 MiB cap. An oversized frame is flagged and dropped at its blank line. The stream stays open. The comment states the real bound. The summary projection is not implemented. The issue names it as the preferred fix, not as a hard requirement, so this does not fail the check.
Snapshot merge and resume. Implemented. snapshotLoadedMsg keeps own-session events with seq greater than lastOwnSeq. Seq-less snapshots replace the cache. Resume calls a refetch through watchingSessionID when the operator is not paged back. Skipping the refetch while paged back is a deliberate deviation from the literal issue text. The change summary and commit message justify it: a refetch would end the paging window. Linked-bucket events held in the cache are not merged. The PR description lists this as a deferred item. The issue does not name linked-bucket events.
Stale comments. Implemented. The layout() reservation comment in app.go is corrected (confirmed in the diff). Per the change summary, the memory estimate, the spend-drawer axis key and renderSpendBand comments are also corrected.
Evidence limits: I read the diffs for validate.go, sse.go, app.go and deps.go. I did not run the tests. I relied on the change summary for keys.go, server.go, catalog_adapter.go and the test files.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every changed file traces to an issue #1568 objective or to direct support for one.
apiclient/client.go and core/sessionapi (server.go, catalog_adapter.go): wire fields that the TUI needs for RequiresLater.
edit/validate.go and validate_test.go: the shared CheckOrder and its tests.
tui/deps.go, deps_test.go, plugin_detail_pane.go and its test: the DEPS indicator and the Requires later section. The Requires later section is a small display addition that follows from the new field.
apiclient/sse.go and sse_test.go: backoff reset and oversized-frame handling.
tui/app.go, keys.go, linked.go, snapshot_merge_test.go: snapshot merge, pause and resume refetch, and the lastOwnSeq helper they use.
The PR description's deferred items (cross-incarnation seq comparison, linked-bucket merge, CRLF handling, truncated data line accumulation) are known limits. They are not added scope. No change clearly lacks a link to the issue.

Fixes review: the snapshot merge keyed on the last element's seq, but the
list is time-sorted and mergeLinked interleaves linked-bucket events
numbered in their own bucket's space, so a linked call newer than the
session's own tail made the merge append held events the snapshot already
held; the comparison now runs over the session's own events only
(lastOwnSeq), and held bucket events do not merge. Resuming the stream
refetched even while paged back, and a snapshot ends the paging window,
so un-pausing jumped an operator reading an old page to the tail; the
refetch is now skipped while paged back, [t] still returns on purpose.

TestStream_SkipsOversizedFrame does not exercise the oversized-frame skip path.
The test frame is 5 MiB. maxSSELine is 32 MiB. The frame is therefore not truncated, and parseSSE never sets oversized.
The frame is dropped only because json.Unmarshal rejects "xxxx…" in the malformed-frame branch. The test passes even if the truncated → oversized logic is removed. The test shows that the cap was raised above the old 4 MiB limit. It does not show that an over-cap frame is skipped while the connection survives.
TestLineScan_TruncatesInsteadOfFailing covers lineScan only. No test covers the parseSSE handling of a truncated data: line.
Add an internal parseSSE variant that accepts the cap. Then test a small cap with a truncated frame whose truncated prefix is valid JSON, followed by a valid frame. Assert that only the second event arrives.

Script executed:
#!/bin/bash# Check how the server writes SSE frames and whether any CRLF is used.
rg -n --type=go -C3 'text/event-stream' core/sessionapi
rg -n --type=go '\\r\\n' core/sessionapi
Strip a trailing \r in lineScan.next. CRLF streams never flush a frame.
next drops only the \n (sse.go:243). A CRLF line keeps its \r. bufio.ScanLines removes that \r, and the lineScan doc comment describes the scanner-equivalence as "one difference that matters here," so the \r handling is not covered by that description.
With CRLF framing, the blank separator line reaches parseSSE as "\r", not "". That value does not match the line == "" case (sse.go:197), so it falls into default and flush() never runs. Each data: value also keeps its \r, and the values accumulate in dataBuf across frames. No event is published for the rest of that connection, and dataBuf grows for the same period.
The server in this repository writes LF only. core/sessionapi/server.go:580 sets Content-Type: text/event-stream, and a search for CRLF in core/sessionapi returned no matches. The impact therefore applies to intermediaries that rewrite line endings to CRLF.
The fix is one line. The io.EOF path with a final unterminated line also reaches the return at sse.go:272, so it is covered.

Do not merge events from different session incarnations.
The store can evict an entire session and recreate the same ID with Seq restarting at 1. Agentop retains cached events for the selected ID, so a later snapshot for the reused ID can enter this merge with old-incarnation events still in m.events[msg.id]. The e.Seq > last check then appends those old events to the new snapshot.
This path is introduced by the PR. Before it, snapshot loading replaced m.events[msg.id], so stale cached events were not merged.
Do not compare Seq across incarnations. Add and propagate an incarnation boundary, such as a server-provided creation marker, and merge cached events only when both snapshots belong to the same incarnation.

Keep merged events in timestamp order.
mergeLinked sorts the snapshot by At, but this append does not place retained events among linked-bucket events. For example, a linked event at 12 ms can precede retained own-session events at 9 and 10 ms in the resulting slice. Merge the retained events by timestamp before rebuilding the timeline. Invalidate full-event marks when a projected snapshot replaces rows.
If an operator fetches an event’s full detail and then pauses and resumes, the new snapshot request can replace that row with a projected copy. fullFetched still marks its sequence as complete. On the next detail opening, needsFullEvent therefore skips the fetch and leaves the message bodies unavailable. Preserve the full row or clear its fetched mark when installing the projected snapshot. Summary
The fix is solid. edit.CheckOrder matches core/plugins/registry.go:validateRelationships rule for rule: first occurrence wins, Requires <, RequiresLater >, and RequiresAny means at least one upstream with no downstream presence. Both the pre-apply validator and the DEPS indicator now call it, so the two can't drift again. RequiresLater now gets from /v1/pipeline and /v1/plugins to both apiclient structs. The stream changes hold up: the backoff counter resets on open, lineScan truncates and stays on the right line, and the snapshot merge compares only the session's own seqs, so linked-bucket seqs can't mix in. The merged tail also folds correctly through localContextFor, because rebaseSessionContext(msg.events) leaves Folded() < len(m.events). Nothing blocks merge. There is one suggestion (the resume refetch for cached-only sessions) and a few nits on wire/doc coverage.
I ran go test ./apiclient/ ./edit/ ./tui/ (cmd/agentop), go test ./sessionapi/ (core) and go vet ./... (cmd/agentop) locally on 917eaca. All clean.
Not inline because the line isn't in the diff: the Catalog pane's REQUIRES column (tui/catalog_pane.go:43-49) and selectedCatalogEntry (:76-81) still drop RequiresLater. A catalog-mode detail view of litellm-budget-track shows no dependency at all. See the inline note on plugin_detail_pane.go.

suggestion: The resume refetch has no guard for a session the server no longer serves. The Enter path checks this explicitly (if !live[id] { return nil }, around L708: "the fetch would 404 and flash an error over the very events this change preserved"), and timeline_pane.go uses m.sessionServed(session) for the same reason. Here's how it fails today: open a cached-only session (proxy restarted, the session is no longer listed), press p twice, and you get snapshot <id> failed: … flashed over the preserved events. Suggest adding && m.sessionServed(id) to the condition, plus a test next to TestPause_ResumeWithoutWatchedSession.

suggestion: This section only shows for plugins reached from the Pipeline pane. selectedCatalogEntry (catalog_pane.go:76-81) builds the synthetic PipelinePlugin without RequiresLater: e.RequiresLater, so the catalog detail view of litellm-budget-track shows no dependencies. The Catalog pane's REQUIRES column (catalog_pane.go:43-49) also leaves it out. Copying the field across and appending the later-deps to that column, for example as later:inference-parser, would finish the wire plumbing this PR adds.

nit: For RequiresLater this stores a downstream position in UpstreamPosition. The rendered text (— at position N) is still correct, but the field name and its doc comment ("1-based position of the satisfying upstream plugin") are now wrong for one of the three callers. Consider renaming it to Position/AtPosition or updating the comment.

nit: Since requiresLater is now on the wire, a few places still list only requires/requiresAny: the API table in CLAUDE.md (the /v1/pipeline and /v1/plugins rows, ~L621-622), the agentop pipeline get help text (cmd_pipeline.go:43-44, "--json carries requires/requiresAny"), and the DEPS comments in tui/pipeline_pane.go (~L78, L138). Worth a one-line update in each so the docs match the payload.

Fixes #1568
Summary
Three agentop problems, all from the issue:
1. The plugin-order check didn't know
RequiresLater. The check existed in three copies (tui/deps.go×2,edit/validate.go), none enforcingRequiresLater— so movinginference-parserabovelitellm-budget-track(which declaresRequiresLater: inference-parser) showed DEPS ✓, passed the pre-apply validation, applied, and then rolled back after the proxy refused the reload. That is exactly the error the pre-apply check exists to catch.requiresLaternow rides the wire:pipelinePluginView(/v1/pipeline),CatalogEntry(/v1/plugins, via the catalog adapter), and bothapiclientstructs.edit.CheckOrder, mirroring the framework'svalidateRelationships— which bothvalidateChainand the TUI'spluginDepsAllSatisfiedcall. The two can no longer drift.deps.goper-dep loops folded into onepositionStatushelper; the detail pane gained a "Requires later:" section.2. The live stream degraded three ways (beyond #1542's retention fix):
streamLoop's attempt counter incremented on every disconnect and never reset after a successful open — five disconnects hours apart each waited the capped 30s. It now counts consecutive failed connects.parseSSEnow reads through a capped line reader (lineScan): an oversized frame is skipped and the connection survives, instead ofErrTooLongdropping the connection and every event published during the reconnect gap. The comment now states the real bound.snapshotLoadedMsgassigned wholesale, dropping events streamed while the fetch was in flight; it now merges by sequence number (seq-less snapshots from pre-paging proxies still land whole). Pausing withpdropped events silently; resuming now refetches the watched session (watchingSessionID).3. Stale comments corrected. The
layout()"exactly one place / only from the WindowSizeMsg handler" claim was false (five callers incl. pane transitions) — the pane-blind reservation arguments are re-derived on the real reason: nosetPanechoke point exists. The memory estimate assumed a 1000-event cap that no longer exists. The spend drawer's axis key isa, notg.renderSpendBandis test-facing, not "the form the renderer publishes" — production renders only the styled variant.Tests
edit: RequiresLater satisfied / missing / misordered (the issue's exact case).tui: DEPS indicator false on RequiresLater misorder and missing; snapshot merge keeps higher-seq streamed events; seq-less snapshot still replaces; resume issues a refetch, no-watch resume doesn't.apiclient: backoff resets after open (attempt stays 1 across reconnects); a 5 MiB frame no longer kills the connection;lineScantruncates and keeps its position.cmd/agentopsuite,core/sessionapisuite,go vet, gofmt,go mod tidy -diffall clean.Deferred (review round 2)
lineScandoes not strip a trailing\rthe waybufio.Scannerdid; a CRLF SSE stream would never flush frames. The server writes\nonly.data:line is still accumulated intodataBufonly to be discarded at flush.Assisted-By: Claude (Anthropic AI) noreply@anthropic.com
