Closes #211

Summary

  • Configures path-based allowlists in .gitleaks.toml\ covering test suites (\pps/[^/]+/tests/., \packages/[^/]+/tests/.), quality documentation (\docs/quality/.*), and public telemetry / OAuth client identifiers (\ elemetry.mjs, \oauth.ts).
  • Resolves all 21 false-positive findings on \generic-api-key\ (such as \sec-websocket-key, test \idempotencyKey, fixture \sessionSecret, test passwords, and public client IDs) when \gitleaks detect\ runs across full history or during scheduled Security workflows.
  • Confirmed with local \gitleaks detect --config .gitleaks.toml: 0 leaks found while keeping all real secret-scanning rules active for production code.

Verification

  • \gitleaks detect --source . --config .gitleaks.toml --verbose\ -> 0 leaks found

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated repository secret-scanning rules to cover documentation examples, public client constants, test fixtures, and selected project files. Added scanning annotations to two public constants; their values and runtime behavior are unchanged. These updates affect repository checks only and do not change app features or behavior. No other user-facing changes are included.

Explanation

Issue #211 requires the scheduled full-history Gitleaks scan to ignore the listed false positives. .gitleaks.toml allows apps/*/tests/, packages/*/tests/, and docs/quality/ paths. It also allows the two exact public literals. Inline gitleaks:allow annotations cover POSTHOG_API_KEY and CLAUDE_OAUTH_CLIENT_ID. The unrelated audit, image-scan, and timing failures do not apply to this coding requirement.

Explanation

The changes are limited to Gitleaks configuration and annotations on the two public constants. These changes directly support issue #211. They do not change runtime behavior, tests, workflows, or unrelated source code.

Limit the global exemptions to tests and documentation.

The test and documentation paths match issue #211’s intended path-based allowlist. The telemetry and Claude OAuth paths are broader than that scope. Because this [allowlist] has no condition = "AND", matching production files can skip all Gitleaks rules. Remove only those production-file paths and add gitleaks:allow comments for the known constants.

Addressed the review feedback in commit a017483:

  1. Removed file-wide production path exemptions (telemetry.mjs, oauth.ts, and dist/providers/claude/oauth.*) from [allowlist].paths in .gitleaks.toml, retaining only the test suite and quality documentation path patterns (apps/[^/]+/tests/.*, packages/[^/]+/tests/.*, docs/quality/.*).
  2. Inline annotations + exact constant regexes:
    • Added // gitleaks:allow inline comments on POSTHOG_API_KEY in telemetry.mjs and CLAUDE_OAUTH_CLIENT_ID in oauth.ts for working-tree / HEAD scans.
    • Scoped [allowlist].regexes (with regexTarget = "match") to the two exact public client identifier literals so historical commits (686788e5 and e5a2a1dc) scanned during scheduled --full-history --all runs do not re-trigger false positives, while keeping both production files fully protected against any future credential leak.

Verification

  • gitleaks detect --source . --config .gitleaks.toml --log-opts="--full-history --all" -v → 428 commits scanned, no leaks found
  • gitleaks detect --source . --config .gitleaks.toml --no-git -v → no leaks found
  • Synthetic secret check injected into packages/gateway/src/providers/claude/oauth.ts → properly flagged (leaks found: 1)

Match only the complete public identifiers.

These regexes are unanchored. With regexTarget = "match", a finding such as api_key = phc_zjjbX0PnWxERXrMHhkEJWj9A9BhGVLRReICgsfTMmpx_EXTRAvalue also matches the global allowlist. Gitleaks can then suppress a different credential. Put the identifiers in a separate [[allowlists]] block with regexTarget = "secret" and anchored regexes. Keep the placeholder rule in a match-target block. Do not mix [allowlist] with [[allowlists]]. Gitleaks defines match as the rule’s full match and uses OR as the default allowlist condition. (github.com)

Based on learnings, match-target regexes check the full rule match, while secret-target regexes can restrict an exemption to the extracted value.

Thank you, this is the fix we would like to merge. One thing first: our CONTRIBUTING.md asks for a Signed-off-by: line (Developer Certificate of Origin 1.1) on every commit. Could you add it, for example with git rebase --signoff main and a force-push? We will merge it as soon as the sign-off is there. Contributions are voluntary; payment applies only to issues labelled 💎 Bounty, under the terms posted on that issue.

Rebased onto current main (with git rebase --signoff, both commits keep Signed-off-by:) and force-pushed, so the PR is mergeable again.

The only conflict: main already added inline gitleaks:allow annotations (with more descriptive comments) on POSTHOG_API_KEY in telemetry.mjs and CLAUDE_OAUTH_CLIENT_ID in oauth.ts. I kept the main versions of those two lines, so the PR now only touches .gitleaks.toml: the exact-constant regexes plus the test-fixture / docs/quality path allowlist.
