Closes #65

Summary

Adds a first-class, isolated contributor command (npm run dev:stack) in scripts/dev-stack.mjs so contributors can run and edit the full SpaceApp stack directly from a source checkout after npm ci, with live reload for apps/web and apps/api, without colliding with an installed npx run-spaceapp instance.

What Was Built

  1. One-command source stack runner (scripts/dev-stack.mjs + package.json dev:stack script)

    • npm run dev:stack (up default):
      • Verifies prerequisites (node matching .nvmrc, docker, and docker compose) with clear remediation messages if Docker is not running.
      • Reads the exact digest-pinned pgvector/pgvector:0.8.0-pg16@sha256:... and temporalio/auto-setup:1.29.4@sha256:... images directly from packages/run-spaceapp/templates/compose.yml (failing closed if missing or unpinned) and starts an isolated Docker Compose project (spaceapp-dev, .dev-stack/compose.yml) with ports bound strictly to 127.0.0.1 (55432 for PostgreSQL, 57233 for Temporal by default).
      • Generates per-state-directory secrets in .dev-stack/secrets/ (0700 directory, 0600 secret files: postgres-password, session-secret, setup-token, database-url). Never prints the session secret or database password to stdout/logs; prints the one-time owner setup token only while owner setup is unclaimed (and records .dev-stack/secrets/setup-token.claimed once claimed).
      • Builds shared workspace packages (npm run build:packages) and optionally starts tsc -b --watch when --watch-packages is passed.
      • Runs database migrations (npm run migrate -w @space/db) against the dev PostgreSQL container before starting the API or Temporal worker.
      • Installs the pinned @opencode/cli version from Dockerfile (@opencode/cli@2.0.32) into .dev-stack/opencode, generates host-side opencode-vscode-parity (and sibling *-vscode-parity) wrappers in .dev-stack/bin, and seeds .dev-stack/providers/opencode/home/.config/opencode/opencode.json (model: "opencode/big-pickle") with XDG_CONFIG_HOME set so OpenCode CLI and packages/cli-host share the same configuration on Linux, macOS, and WSL2.
      • Starts and supervises packages/cli-host (Unix domain socket .dev-stack/run/pane-host.sock), apps/worker (Temporal worker), apps/api (tsx watch src/index.ts on 127.0.0.1:5910), and apps/web (vite on 127.0.0.1:5911).
      • If any supervised child exits unexpectedly, logs a clear error naming the failed service and exit code/signal, stops the remaining children cleanly, and exits non-zero.
      • Handles SIGINT and SIGTERM by shutting down all Node child processes and closing the Unix socket within 10 seconds while keeping the dev PostgreSQL and Temporal containers running for fast restarts.
    • npm run dev:stack -- down: Stops any running host processes and stops the spaceapp-dev Docker Compose containers while preserving volumes and .dev-stack.
    • npm run dev:stack -- reset: Stops host processes, runs docker compose -p spaceapp-dev down -v --remove-orphans, and removes .dev-stack after path-safety validation (assertSafeStateDir refuses /, $HOME, os.tmpdir(), the repository root, any parent of the repository root, protected repo directories, or unmarked non-empty custom directories).
    • npm run dev:stack -- status: Prints the health of the dev containers, child processes, and /readyz?strict=1 (supports --json).
    • npm run dev:stack -- smoke: Automated end-to-end smoke check that starts the source stack, verifies GET /readyz?strict=1 (ok: true, database: "RUNNING", worker: "RUNNING", cliHost: "RUNNING"), completes first-run owner setup over HTTP (POST /api/setup/claim), fetches the CSRF token (GET /api/auth/csrf), locates the Getting Started room's OpenCode CLI pane (GET /api/rooms), starts the CLI session (POST /api/panes/:id/cli/session), attaches to the terminal WebSocket (ws://127.0.0.1:5911/api/panes/:id/cli/terminal/ws), verifies session.status === "RUNNING", and tears down cleanly.
  2. Vite Dev Server Proxy (apps/web/vite.config.ts + apps/web/tests/vite-config.test.ts)

    • Added resolveViteApiOrigin(env) so apps/web proxies /api to SPACE_API_ORIGIN or http://127.0.0.1:${SPACE_API_PORT ?? "4910"} while preserving existing 4910/4911 defaults when unset.
    • Enabled ws: true on the /api proxy so CLI terminal WebSockets (/api/panes/:id/cli/terminal/ws) work seamlessly through the Vite web origin (http://127.0.0.1:5911).
  3. Tests, Public Export Allowlist, and Contributor Documentation

    • Added unit and supervision tests in scripts/tests/dev-stack.test.mjs and wired them into npm run test:contributor and scripts/tests/public-suite.test.mjs (which runs automatically in .github/workflows/ci.yml via npm run test:public).
    • Added scripts/dev-stack.mjs and scripts/tests/dev-stack.test.mjs to scripts/public-export.mjs (publicRepositoryScripts and publicRepositoryMaintainedFiles), PUBLIC_EXPORT_MANIFEST.json, and scripts/tests/public-package-metadata.test.mjs.
    • Documented "Run the full app from source" in CONTRIBUTING.md with commands, default ports (5911, 5910, 55432, 57233), environment overrides, and down/reset/status lifecycle commands.

Verification

  • node scripts/verify-export-provenance.mjs . ("ok": true, "problems": [])
  • node scripts/public-export.mjs --verify ("ok": true)
  • node scripts/space-hygiene-check.mjs (Hygiene check passed.)
  • node --test scripts/tests/dev-stack.test.mjs scripts/tests/public-export.test.mjs scripts/tests/public-workflows.test.mjs (51/51 passing)

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds a command for running and managing the application stack from source. It configures local services and state, checks service readiness, and adds Vite proxy configuration, contributor documentation, and tests.

Changes: Contributor Development Stack

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configurable Vite API proxy
apps/web/vite.config.ts, apps/web/tests/vite-config.test.ts, PUBLIC_EXPORT_MANIFEST.json
Vite resolves the API origin from SPACE_API_ORIGIN or SPACE_API_PORT, and uses it for the listed proxy routes. The /api proxy enables WebSocket support; /logout and /livez are added.
Stack configuration and local state
scripts/dev-stack.mjs, scripts/tests/dev-stack.test.mjs
The new stack command validates options and state-directory paths, renders Compose configuration with pinned images and loopback bindings, creates local secrets and CLI wrappers, and builds the child-process environment. Tests cover configuration, state safety, Compose bindings, and local setup.
Service startup and lifecycle
scripts/dev-stack.mjs, scripts/tests/dev-stack.test.mjs
The command starts Docker services, runs migrations, launches and supervises application processes, and checks readiness. It also provides down, reset, status, and smoke operations. Tests cover reset safeguards and process failure handling.
Command wiring and contributor guidance
package.json, CONTRIBUTING.md, .gitignore, scripts/public-export.mjs, scripts/tests/public-package-metadata.test.mjs, scripts/tests/public-suite.test.mjs, PUBLIC_EXPORT_MANIFEST.json
The root package adds dev:stack and includes the new tests in contributor and public test suites. The guide documents prerequisites, stack behavior, ports, and lifecycle commands. .dev-stack/ is ignored, and public export records are updated.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d8cda

The new dev:stack command can send SIGKILL to an unrelated process if its recorded process IDs are stale, for example after a reboot or a closed terminal. Crashes in the CLI host, worker, or API may also go unreported while the stack looks running. Both issues are limited to contributor tooling, but they should be fixed before merge.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(dev-stack): add one-command source contributor stack (Issue #65)" matches the main change. The PR adds npm run dev:stack, implemented in scripts/dev-stack.mjs, which starts a source-based contributor stack with one command. The title uses a conventional-commit style, names the feature, and cites the linked issue. It does not list every detail, such as the lifecycle commands, Vite proxy changes, or docs, but that is expected for a title.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay connected to issue #65. The dev-stack runner, Vite proxy and WebSocket support, tests, public-export metadata, and contributor documentation support the requested source stack, OpenCode pane, lifecycle commands, or contributor distribution. No unrelated provider, browser-host, published-image, or run-spaceapp launcher changes are shown.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #65 requires CI coverage that starts dev:stack without a TTY, waits for readiness, completes owner setup, opens an OpenCode pane, verifies it is running, runs reset, and verifies cleanup. The PR adds a smoke command and tests, but the workflow diff is empty and the PR reports no CI job that performs this startup-to-reset validation. The implementation and contributor guide cover the main source-stack, lifecycle, isolation, secret, reload, and OpenCode behavior, but they do not satisfy this required automated CI check.

Resolution

Add an ubuntu-latest CI job that runs the source stack without a TTY, performs the required readiness, owner-setup, and OpenCode-pane checks, runs npm run dev:stack -- reset, and verifies that the created containers, volumes, and processes are gone. Add the required macOS Docker Desktop or Colima notes and run-output evidence if the issue documentation criteria are also required for completion.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 36 functions across 7 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Check process identity before you signal PIDs from pids.json.

terminateRecordedProcesses sends SIGTERM and then SIGKILL to every PID in pids.json. It only checks that the PID is alive. It does not check that the PID still belongs to a dev-stack process.

pids.json can outlive its processes in these cases:

  • The supervisor receives SIGKILL.
  • The host crashes or reboots.
  • The supervisor dies on SIGHUP when the terminal closes. upDevStack handles only SIGINT and SIGTERM.

In each case, rmSync(pidsPath) does not run. The next up (Line 1306), down, or reset then signals whatever process holds those PIDs. After a reboot, PID reuse is likely. The result is that an unrelated process owned by the same user is killed.

Record an identity value with each PID and check it before you send a signal. One option is the process command line, read from /proc/<pid>/cmdline or ps -p <pid> -o command=. Another option is the process start time. If the value does not match, skip the PID. Also handle SIGHUP in upDevStack so that a closed terminal removes pids.json.
