Problem and user impact

Closes #64. Each runtime image previously included application outputs and production dependencies for services it does not run. This change stages a separate closure for core, browser and CLI, reducing installation/update size while retaining the service entrypoints and runtime behavior.

The conflict with upstream rc5 is resolved. Fresh full Linux validation is blocked as described below; earlier passing evidence is identified by revision. No bounty award or payment is claimed.

Change

  • Trace each service's imports without rewriting its JavaScript or import.meta paths. Preserve installed nested dependency versions, required peers, runtime assets and the target's native bridge; omit foreign native prebuilds and sourcemaps.
  • Give the API a client-only CLI-host export so core does not load the native PTY server. Preserve uid/gid 10001, healthcheck, Docker scripts, wrapper links, core owner/backup tools, notices and npm security patches, including the upstream THIRD_PARTY_LICENSES directory.
  • Install Xvfb for existing headed-browser behavior and add actual startup smokes to the native amd64/arm64 container matrix.
  • Keep upstream OpenCode 2.0.32 in CLI. Install the pinned launcher and one glibc native package: x64 baseline for portability without AVX2, or arm64. Match the official installer's hard link, remove unused nested optional native packages and assert the exact response opencode v2.0.32. Package manifests/notices and both command links remain.
  • Resolve the client subpath before the parent Vitest alias, order the watchdog fixture's explicit alert after setup events and retain reviewed sanitize-html/Vite/Hono security updates. README disk minima remain unchanged because they also reserve database, workspace and update capacity.

Current revision and verification limits (23 October 2026)

Current head: b859be161fc6ae6c4403ea050007dfeb59788d38, merging upstream main 2f4ab98794aade2e3476ae7fd5c103e04c30825f. The four dependency conflicts are resolved using upstream's root/API/web manifests and lockfile byte for byte. This retains rc5's Hono/sanitize-html/Vite security updates and Vitest 4.1.12, while retaining the CLI-host client export. Upstream acceptance records and export manifest are unchanged relative to that base. GitHub now reports MERGEABLE.

Fresh checks at this exact head, on Windows with Node 22.23.4 and a fresh locked npm ci:

  • 45 targeted runtime-closure, smoke-cleanup, image-budget, workflow and public-export tests pass, with zero skips.
  • The additional Docker-distribution suite has 12 passes and one failure: its POSIX memory-names symbolic-link test fails on this Windows host with readlink EINVAL. It is not reported as passing.
  • npm run check and npm run build both reach the unchanged gateway bundler and fail because esbuild marks the absolute Windows src/main.ts entry point as external. Neither full command is reported as passing; no assertion or gate was weakened.
  • Hygiene preflight and whitespace checks pass; the worktree is clean. Tests use LF bytes restored from the exact committed Git blobs where the original Windows checkout had CRLF conversions; these are not source changes.

Dispatching the existing contributor container validation workflow was refused with HTTP 422, "Actions has been disabled for this repository." No fresh Linux/image job was created, and no attempt was made to bypass this restriction. Fresh complete Linux application, native-image/size/security and startup validation remains pending. The earlier green jobs and image measurements below are historical evidence for their explicitly listed revisions, not a green check for this new merge head. No current cross-platform acceptance or official release is claimed.

The previous README correction at 8ef2280a54fac513eb6dba84ded56aae5644c585 aligns its CLI ceiling with the enforced 690 MiB. The refresh is AI-assisted; no personal human testing of this newer head is asserted.

Earlier image sizes and budgets

Measured with the unchanged Docker inspect mechanism at implementation 76726419d65dc8dc8d98dfe39364b9f106e90c6d; sizes are uncompressed MiB:

Image amd64 arm64 Final budget Issue maximum
core 771.2 791.7 815 850
browser 1081.9 1111.6 1130 1350
cli 637.0 668.6 690 1000

Each ceiling leaves 18–24 MiB above the larger architecture. After the measured implementation, changes are limited to the size-policy module/comment, its test and the matching README ceiling. Dockerfile, application code, dependencies and runtime packaging inputs are unchanged from the measured implementation. Local evaluation of conservative bounds 0.1 MiB above all six rounded measurements passes the lowered budgets; 15 focused tests and hygiene/whitespace checks pass.

Earlier revision verification

  • Both native image jobs pass: amd64, arm64. All six image builds, size gates, service startup smokes and blocking image Trivy scans pass. Core migrates PostgreSQL and answers readyz; CLI accepts its socket connection; Browser Host launches Chromium. Runtime uid, required tools and cleanup are checked.
  • Actual launcher 1.1.7 large-profile install passes: the amd64 job runs install --profile large --access isolated --no-open --local-images --non-interactive in an isolated Ubuntu guest. PostgreSQL, Temporal, core and worker become ready; a fresh owner is registered. A protocol-v2 attach starts the OpenCode 2.0.32 pane, which remains RUNNING and produces 14137 stdout bytes. A browser pane opens Example Domain and returns its title and a 65424-byte PNG. Owned containers, volumes, networks, tags, state and the guest are cleaned up.
  • Environment: real Ubuntu guest, 8 vCPUs/16 GiB, KVM on a standard free four-core GitHub host. CPU is overcommitted; this is not physical eight-core hardware or a performance benchmark. The unchanged launcher reads 8 CPUs, 16768626688 memory bytes and 34169008128 free-disk bytes. No resource reports, minima or readiness checks are mocked; no paid runner or purchased provider access is used.
  • Release-source gate passes: run 39785262628 on implementation 7672641 passes sanitized install/audit/build and the release-policy blocking filesystem Trivy scan. Of 3552 declared runtime inputs, none are missing. Three files differ only because the default exporter redacts VM-number markers in comments. Exact Git-object/exporter comparison plus JavaScript parser and shell non-comment-line comparisons confirm identical executable code.
  • Earlier implementation application suite passes: job 119838809880 validates 76726419d65dc8dc8d98dfe39364b9f106e90c6d: API 3627 passed/17 skipped, web 3930 passed, worker 229 passed, plus other workspaces, static check, build and launcher 1.1.7 pack. Install and the high-severity npm audit gate pass; npm still reports five moderate findings, so this is not a zero-vulnerability claim. Application/package source, dependencies and Docker/runtime packaging inputs remain byte-identical after that commit; subsequent changes are the size-policy/test and matching README ceiling. Skipped optional integrations are not counted as passing evidence.
  • Final policy revision: run 39789264025 passes runtime tests, check/build and prepared-runtime module/boundary checks at da8caff805e4899506ad82b0df86e44474171209. The only subsequent change is the README ceiling correction identified above. The policy run does not rebuild unchanged images or repeat the full-stack proof.

Run 39783003288 is now completed successfully: runtime, full-public quality, native amd64 images/real installation, and native arm64 images all pass. The previously pending hosted tool installation and full-public rerun have completed. Exact tested revisions and the subsequent policy/documentation-only changes are identified above.

Scope and review

AI-assisted implementation and verification. The human operator confirmed personal review/testing while the branch was at fdff365. Subsequent native-packaging and size-policy corrections are agent-authored and their verification is disclosed above; human execution of those later CI jobs is not asserted.

Linux is the reference environment. The broad local Windows suite was not green; no new native Windows/macOS installer acceptance is claimed. Passing configured security gates is not a zero-vulnerability claim. This contribution adds no database migrations. Existing release/evidence policies, acceptance records and resource minima are unchanged; no credentials, private operator data or runtime state are included.

The maintainers' full publication gate still needs fresh exact-candidate cross-platform acceptance evidence. This PR does not rewrite that record, dispatch official publication or claim an official release. The expected outside-contributor export-provenance limitation remains visible.

  • Coverage, exact revisions and material limitations are listed.
  • Linux/native-architecture and real terminal/browser evidence are listed.
  • No credentials, operator data or private runtime state are included.
  • Resource, security and release effects are described.
  • Final policy-only Linux validation has completed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Container images are substantially smaller, with updated size limits for the core, browser, and CLI images.
    • Container builds are checked on both AMD64 and ARM64, including startup and health checks for each image.
  • Documentation
    • Installation guidance now lists image-size limits for both supported architectures and clarifies how image sizes relate to download and disk-space estimates.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR builds per-target runtime trees for core, browser, and CLI images, lowers their size ceilings, and adds architecture-aware CI smoke checks. It also exposes a CLI-host client subpath and makes a room-watchdog test timestamp relative to the latest event.

Changes: Per-target container runtimes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Assemble and validate target runtimes
scripts/container-runtime.mjs, scripts/tests/container-runtime.test.mjs, scripts/public-export.mjs, scripts/tests/public-package-metadata.test.mjs, scripts/tests/public-suite.test.mjs
Runtime assembly traces target entrypoints and production dependencies, copies selected files and assets, and writes runtime metadata. Tests cover dependency resolution, architecture-specific files, and invalid inputs. The public script and test lists include the new utilities and tests.
Build images from target runtimes
Dockerfile, scripts/container-image-size-budget.mjs, scripts/tests/container-image-size-budget.test.mjs, README.md, scripts/tests/public-docker-distribution.test.mjs
Each image uses its generated target runtime. The browser image installs Xvfb, and the CLI image installs an architecture-specific OpenCode package at a pinned version. The image size ceilings and related documentation and tests are updated.
Run per-target container smoke checks
scripts/container-smoke.mjs, scripts/tests/container-smoke.test.mjs, .github/workflows/containers.yml, scripts/tests/public-workflows.test.mjs
The smoke script checks target health and runtime files, then removes its owned resources. CI runs the checks for the target and architecture matrix after checking image size.

CLI host client export

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expose and use the CLI host client subpath
packages/cli-host/package.json, packages/cli-host/src/client-index.ts, apps/api/src/cli-render-proof-fixture.ts, apps/api/src/cli-terminal.ts, apps/api/vitest.config.ts
The package exports @space/cli-host/client, which re-exports client modules. API imports and the Vitest alias use the new subpath.

Watchdog test timestamp

Layer / File(s) Summary
Set an explicit alert timestamp
apps/api/tests/room-watchdog.test.ts
The alert fixture timestamp is set one millisecond after the latest recorded event.

Explanation

Issue #64 has active coding requirements. The Dockerfile builds separate core, browser, and cli runtime closures with scripts/container-runtime.mjs. The runtime preparer traces imports, preserves required assets and peers, and filters foreign native files and source maps. The image budgets are 815, 1130, and 690 MiB, below the issue maxima of 850, 1350, and 1000 MiB. The workflow builds and smoke-tests all targets on amd64 and arm64. The supplied verification reports passing startup, security, release, and Linux launcher checks. The Dockerfile preserves the required entrypoints, uid/gid 10001, healthcheck, scripts, links, notices, core tools, and npm patches. The client-only CLI export and Xvfb installation support the required runtime closures.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within Issue #64. The @space/cli-host/client export and import updates prevent core from loading the native PTY server. Xvfb supports the required browser startup behavior. Runtime-closure tests, smoke tests, budget updates, workflow changes, and distribution assertions implement or verify the issue. The watchdog fixture ordering change supports deterministic affected tests. The supplied changes do not demonstrate a base-image, Node, Chromium, feature-placement, or unjustified runtime-tool removal.
