Run `/reload-plugins` in an open session, or start a new one. Type `/relay:` and the command menu lists relay's
commands.

## Develop beside the installed release

From a checkout, run a development session alongside an ordinary production session:

```bash
# Terminal 1: production, using the installed release
claude
# Terminal 2: this checkout, with hot reload
scripts/relay-dev.sh
```

The development launcher uses `--plugin-dir` and disables `relay@libar-relay` **only in that process**. It does not
change your installed plugin or its settings. Each checkout has a persistent development home under
`${XDG_STATE_HOME:-$HOME/.local/state}/relay-dev/`, with separate jobs and admission directories. Development jobs
therefore never appear in the production job list, and production jobs are not used by the development guard.
`RELAY_DEV_HOME` overrides that state root; `RELAY_DEV_WORKDIR` overrides the session's working directory.

```bash
# Print the development paths for another terminal
scripts/relay-dev.sh env
# Inspect development jobs
scripts/relay-dev.sh status
# Pass normal Claude arguments, such as --continue
scripts/relay-dev.sh --continue
```

Run production and development in separate sessions, not two copies of the same plugin name inside one session.
Claude Code can reject a second enabled plugin with the same name. To return to production, close the development
session and run `claude` normally.

Resolve the development home before changing directories.

If RELAY_DEV_HOME is relative and RELAY_DEV_WORKDIR changes directories, mkdir creates state under the launch directory, but the plugin resolves the exported paths under the session directory. A later status call then inspects a different jobs home and cannot show those jobs. Convert dev_root to an absolute path before exporting either home.

Review comment at @scripts/relay-dev.sh at line 36:
Resolve dev_root to an absolute path before any directory change and before
exporting either home, so the script and plugin use the same jobs home when
RELAY_DEV_HOME is relative.

P1 Relative homes hide development jobs

If RELAY_DEV_HOME is relative and RELAY_DEV_WORKDIR selects another directory, the launcher creates its state directories before changing directories but exports their relative paths unchanged. The launched session then resolves jobs and admission state under the new working directory, while status from the original directory reads a different store. This was reproduced: the session's job existed, but the original-directory helper reported No jobs. and different admission settings.

Resolve dev_root to an absolute path before creating or exporting its directories. This needs to be fixed before merging so sessions and helpers consistently use the same state.

Knowledge Base Used: Runtime harness and isolation

Artifacts

Executable relative-home validation harness

  • The executed harness supplies fake Claude, invokes real store and status code, asserts both configurations, and cleans up disposable state, making the reproduction repeatable.

Executed commands and output capture wrapper

  • The executed shell wrapper runs both configurations and captures command, working directory, exit code, and observed output, preserving the execution record.

Control output without a session directory change

  • Ran the launcher with a relative development home and no workdir override, showing matching state paths and a job visible to status.

Reproduction output with a changed session directory

  • Ran the same flow with a different session directory, showing divergent state paths and original-directory status missing the runtime job and admission setting.

Head revision and relevant numbered source

  • Captured the tested commit, launcher and resolver source ranges, and an empty tracked diff, tying the observed behavior to unchanged head code.

P2 Developer overrides break the tests

If a developer exports RELAY_DEV_HOME or RELAY_DEV_WORKDIR, this fixture inherits it through process.env. Each override independently makes the launcher test fail: the home override breaks the default-state assertion, and the workdir override breaks the expected working directory. An inherited home also leaves jobs and admission state outside the fixture after cleanup.

This is a non-blocking test-isolation concern that causes misleading local failures and leftover state. Clear both overrides in the fixture, then set them explicitly only in the override test.

Knowledge Base Used: Runtime harness and isolation

Artifacts

Executed fixture isolation validation source

  • The executed Python harness runs the existing suite under three isolated environments and checks failures, directory residue, tracked-file integrity, and cleanup.

Launcher tests with both development overrides absent

  • The existing launcher suite ran with a clean disposable environment and passed all four tests, establishing the control.

Launcher tests with each absolute development override exported separately

  • Two independent suite runs captured the state-path and working-directory assertion failures plus external-home directory residue, confirming inherited overrides escape fixture isolation.

Execution record for fixture isolation validation

  • The harness execution captured the exact head, commands, environments, test output, successful validation assertions, and workspace removal, confirming reproduction without tracked-code changes.
