Closes #

Summary

Adds a remote execd sandbox (OpenShell, through sandbox-api) as a code execution backend. When it is on, the agent's generated Python, run_command, the file tools and the workspace panel run in a per-conversation kernel inside the sandbox instead of the CUGA process. The sandbox is off by default. It is switched on in Manage → Code sandbox, or forced with sandbox_mode = "execd".

Execution

  • New executors/execd/ package:
    • ExecdExecutor: one kernel per thread, bootstrap (workspace + venv), skill copy, release on delete.
    • connection: sandbox URL and API key.
    • filesystem_backend: file tools over /command.
    • block_runner: runs one code block.
  • ExecutionRouter gains execd for Python, shell and filesystem. The plan alone decides the backend, so the Manage toggle, sandbox_mode and execution.python_backend resolve in one place.
  • find_tools / load_skill blocks are no longer forced local under execd. Other backends behave as before.
  • Per-block timeout execd_execution_timeout (default 120 s), separate from sandbox_execution_timeout, because tool round trips count against it.

Tool calls from the sandbox (tool_callback.py, POST /sandbox/tools/call)

  • The sandbox gets a stub for every callable in the block's namespace. Each call is POSTed back to CUGA and runs the same callable the local executor would: registry, MCP, SDK tools, todos, load_skill, plus ToolGuard and the call budget.
  • Every block is registered under a fresh id with an HMAC token. A call is answered only while that block runs and only with that block's callables. Calls from finished blocks or other threads are refused.
  • A tool exception is returned to the agent's code as an exception. Control signals (e.g. ACP permission pause) stop the block and are re-raised in CUGA after it ends.
  • The callback URL is advanced_features.sandbox_callback_url, falling back to server_ports.function_call_host. It must match the CUGA host allowed by the sandbox egress policy (cuga_tool_callback in sandbox-api execd-policy.yaml). The kernel bootstrap probes it and logs a clear warning if the sandbox cannot reach CUGA.

Connection

  • The sandbox-api URL and key come from a mounted secret (sandbox_secret_dir, default /bindings/cuga-sandbox): SANDBOX_URL and SANDBOX_API_KEY. The secret is re-read when it rotates.
  • Without the secret, URL and key are entered in the UI. The key is stored via the secrets store and requires CUGA_SECRET_KEY.

Server / UI

  • GET/PUT /api/manage/sandbox and POST /api/manage/sandbox/refresh (toggle, connection status, probe), stored in sandbox_store.
  • New Code Sandbox section in Manage, styled like the LLM settings: one status line, plus an error box only when something is wrong.
  • The workspace tree, file preview, uploads and their cleanup go to the sandbox when execd is on.
  • Deleting a conversation releases its kernel in sandbox-api.

New settings ([advanced_features])

Setting Default Purpose
sandbox_mode = "execd" — force execd; the UI toggle is then locked on
sandbox_url, sandbox_api_key "" sandbox-api connection when no secret is mounted
sandbox_secret_dir /bindings/cuga-sandbox mounted secret with URL + key
sandbox_callback_url "" CUGA address as seen from the sandbox, e.g. http://cuga.<ns>.svc.cluster.local:7860
execd_execution_timeout 120 per-block wall clock (s)
execd_verify_ssl false TLS verification for sandbox-api
execd_package_index "" PyPI mirror for uv pip install in the sandbox

Testing

  • Unit tests for connection, routing, block runner, tool callback, filesystem backend, execution and Manage routes. The executor suite passes locally.
  • ruff check / ruff format --check clean on the changed execd files.
  • Manual on OpenShift (tenant-12345 + sandbox-tenant-12345):
    • code runs in execd through sandbox-api (/code/context, /code);
    • the tool callback reaches CUGA from a real kernel at the host allowed by the egress policy;
    • the Manage toggle switches the backend without a restart;
    • deleting a conversation releases its kernel (DELETE /threads/{id} → 200).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for the Execd remote sandbox for Python, shell, and filesystem operations.
    • Added Code Sandbox settings in Manage, including connection configuration, enable/disable controls, secret-backed credentials, refresh, and connectivity status.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 041cc

With the execd sandbox enabled, uploads and large file writes over roughly 100 KB can fail. Filesystem and shell calls made inside the sandbox are not counted against tool-call limits. The sandbox API key travels over unverified TLS by default. If the settings database is unavailable at startup, a sandbox enabled in the UI can come up disabled without notice. The feature is off by default, but these issues should be addressed before relying on execd.

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 041cc

Remote execution introduces new credential, tool-access and workspace-data boundaries. Enabled deployments accept unverified server certificates by default, and cancellation and cleanup do not fully contain remote work. The feature is opt-in and host tools remain restricted to registered capabilities, but the connection and lifecycle weaknesses affect important security guarantees.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: The new execd client disables certificate verification by default while sending the sandbox control-plane API key. In an enabled HTTPS deployment, an attacker able to intercept that connection can impersonate the service, capture credentials and alter execution traffic. Explicit certificate verification or a CA bundle mitigates this; the feature being opt-in limits exposure but does not authenticate the server once enabled.
  • Low · security · observed: Execd replaces the counted filesystem and run_command callables with generated in-kernel implementations rather than invoking their wrappers. These calls therefore escape the existing block, run and conversation call-budget mechanism. Compared with the counted local execution route, this weakens resource containment and accounting. Other host-tool callbacks retain their wrappers; no additional host privilege is established by this finding.
  • Medium · security · inferred: Removing a block registration prevents new calls but neither cancels nor drains host-tool tasks already accepted under that block's captured context. Concurrent calls can therefore outlive block completion or cancellation. A permission-pause signal arriving after the executor's single pending-signal check is not propagated to the graph. This weakens stop and recovery ordering for already-authorized operations; it does not demonstrate token forgery or access to unregistered tools.
  • Medium · security · inferred: Endpoint changes discard cached contexts without releasing the old remote resources. Conversation release removes local mappings before remote deletion, logs deletion failures and then drops cached ownership scope without a durable retry record. Consequently, deleting a conversation or changing its connection can leave remote execution state outside the application's tracked lifecycle. Actual retention duration and eventual cleanup depend on unavailable sandbox-api behavior.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Transport compromise can expose execution traffic and the configured sandbox control-plane credential; its maximum authority is whatever sandbox-api grants that key, not proven cluster-wide authority. A captured active callback token is narrower: it reaches only that block's registered callables under its originating context. Cross-thread filesystem and token exposure depend on deployment isolation that was not supplied.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Both retained security conditions are on newly introduced execd paths. The certificate-verification finding requires enabled remote connectivity and an attacker able to intercept it. The budget finding requires execution of sandbox-local shell/filesystem tools and bypasses their counted wrappers, not the authorization checks on unrelated host tools.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Invalid callback tokens, missing or expired registrations and unknown callable names are refused. New calls are also refused after a control signal. Non-inline tools retain the callable wrappers supplied by CodeExecutor and execute under the captured context. These controls counter a general unauthenticated host-tool bypass, but do not revoke already-running calls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Failure containment now requires coordination across the graph, callback tasks and remote kernels. Registration removal alone does not finish accepted tool work, and discarding local resource mappings does not establish remote data deletion. Durable cleanup and ordered task termination are therefore security lifecycle obligations, rather than only availability improvements.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Default to authenticated TLS using trusted certificates or an explicit CA bundle. Define the configured key's tenant/resource scope and require a documented isolation contract before treating thread directories as boundaries between mutually untrusted conversations.
  • proposed — Track accepted callback tasks through cancellation or draining, preserve pending control signals until recovery completes, and retain endpoint/ownership cleanup records until remote release succeeds or a documented retention policy takes over. Preserve equivalent call-budget enforcement for inline tools.

extracting filesystem tools and run_command into generated kernel functions;
keep all callable values, including these tools, in remote so execution goes
through counted callback wrappers. Remove the in_kernel-specific filesystem and
shell code generation and leave fs_code and shell_code empty, preserving

Route filesystem tools and run_command through counted callback wrappers.

CodeExecutor wraps runtime coroutine tools with counted_tool_call. Local and OpenSandbox execution invokes those wrapped callables. Execd replaces them with generated kernel functions, so their calls bypass the run, block, thread, and one_tool_per_step budgets.

This is not a ToolGuard regression. Runtime tools are injected outside ToolGuardingToolProvider, so ToolGuard policies do not establish coverage for filesystem or run_command. E2B also serializes the awaitable wrapper rather than preserving the host-side counted wrapper.

Route these tools through callback stubs

Update the Execd context-local routing to stop extracting filesystem tools and
run_command into generated kernel functions; keep all callable values, including
these tools, in remote so execution goes through counted callback wrappers.
Remove the in_kernel-specific filesystem and shell code generation and leave
fs_code and shell_code empty, preserving existing routing for other callables,

Chunk filesystem write payloads before exporting them.

On Linux-backed execd workers, large writes can fail before _HELPER runs. _call places the complete write specification in CUGA_FS_OP. _run_shell_command_once then embeds that value in the shell command and exports it before running _INVOKE. The exported value must still fit the per-string execve limit.

write_bytes base64-encodes the data before the outer encoding, so binary writes and uploads can exceed the limit at roughly 72 KiB. Text writes can exceed it at roughly 96 KiB, depending on JSON escaping. upload_workspace_bytes permits files up to 100 MiB and routes sandbox-backed uploads through ExecdFilesystemBackend.upload, so this affects ordinary uploads as well as large write_text calls.

Keep each payload below the limit by using stdin or a sandbox file-upload API. If chunking is used, preserve truncation for the first chunk and append mode for later chunks.

Do not start with the sandbox off when the stored setting fails to load.

If load_sandbox_settings() raises at startup, this code only logs a warning and returns. connection._runtime then stays None. Consider an operator who switched execd on in Manage, without sandbox_mode = "execd". After a transient DB error during startup, execd_active() returns False. Generated Python, shell and filesystem tools then run on the host backend instead of the sandbox. Nothing tells the operator that the isolation is gone.

Retry the load, or fail startup. At minimum, mark the sandbox subsystem as failed so execution does not silently move to the host.

Proposed fix (bounded retry, then fail loudly)

Turn TLS verification on by default for requests that carry the API key.

execd_verify_ssl = false is the shipped value. The validator default in src/cuga/config.py (line 168) is also False. Here is how that reaches the network:

  • With this value, ExecdExecutor._verify_ssl() returns False.
  • ExecdExecutor._client builds httpx.AsyncClient(verify=False, headers=_auth_headers(...)).
  • Every /code, /command, /code/context, /threads/{id} and /status probe request therefore sends X-API-Key over a connection whose server is not authenticated.

An attacker on the network path between CUGA and sandbox-api can impersonate the endpoint. The attacker can then capture the sandbox key and return forged execution output.

Use true as the default. Deployments with self-signed certificates can set a CA bundle path, which _verify_ssl already supports. Change the validator default too.

Review comment at @src/cuga/settings.toml around lines 56 - 58:
Set the shipped execd_verify_ssl value to true in the settings configuration,
and update the corresponding Validator for advanced_features.execd_verify_ssl in
the configuration module to default to true. Revise the nearby setting comment
to describe verified system certificates as the default and CA bundle paths for
self-signed deployments, while identifying false as insecure development-only
behavior.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Declare the test type marker.

No test in this file has @pytest.mark.unit, and the module does not set pytestmark. The other new execd test files use pytestmark = pytest.mark.unit.

 from cuga.config import settings

+pytestmark = pytest.mark.unit
+
 _real_probe = sandbox_routes._probe

This follows the retrieved learning: "every new or modified test must declare its applicable test type by using the registered @pytest.mark.<marker> decorator(s)."

Review comment at @tests/unit/test_manage_sandbox_routes.py around lines 3 - 9:
Declare the module-level pytest marker by assigning pytest.mark.unit to
pytestmark near the imports in the test module, matching the convention used by
the other execd tests.
