Summary

Makes the popup remember your choices, and adds optional Custom file names under Advanced. Each export (All Transactions, Income, Expenses, Net Worth History, Investment History, Net Worth Categories, Account Sources, BudgetLens Bundle) gets its own field.

  • a filled-in name is used as the exact file name, and the extension is added automatically (salary becomes salary.csv); a typed .csv/.json ending is stripped
  • blank fields keep the existing dated names, so default behavior is unchanged
  • names are remembered between popup sessions via localStorage
  • path separators and characters that are invalid in file names are removed
  • remember the date range, export selections, column choices, and Fast API setting between popup sessions (corrupt or partial saved data falls back to the defaults)
  • ignore .DS_Store via a new .gitignore
  • document the pull request conventions in CONTRIBUTING.md and AGENTS.md

Relates to #14: this covers the "fixed set of files under fixed names" use case without needing a fork. It does not add a license.

Validation

Automated checks:

  • node --check background.js
  • node --check content.js
  • node --check popup.js
  • node --test: 27 passing, including new tests for default vs. custom names, sanitization, file name persistence, and settings persistence/fallback
  • git diff --check

The popup was also rendered locally in a browser to check the layout in light and dark mode, and saved file names and settings (date range, export selection, column choices) were confirmed to be restored after a reload (screenshots below). The unpacked extension has not been manually tested in Chrome, so the final downloaded file names are verified by unit tests only.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The popup now remembers your date range, export selections, column choices, and Fast API setting between sessions.
    • Set optional custom filenames for supported CSV and JSON exports in Advanced settings. File extensions are added automatically, and blank or invalid names use the default dated filenames.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the feature guide to describe saved settings and custom export filenames.

Settings restored after reopening the popup (date range, export selections, and column choices):

Popup settings restored after reopening

Add optional per-file name fields under Advanced so each export can be
saved under a fixed name of the user's choosing. Blank fields keep the
default dated names. Names are remembered between popup sessions.

📝 Walkthrough

The popup now remembers custom export filenames and selected settings between sessions. The content script sanitizes custom names and applies them to CSV and JSON exports. Contributor guidance now specifies commit and pull request requirements, and .gitignore excludes .DS_Store.

Changes: Export filename customization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Popup settings and filename submission
popup.html, popup.css, popup.js, tests/popup.test.js, README.md
The Advanced section adds eight optional filename fields. The popup saves and restores filenames, export selections, columns, Fast API, and dates. Export requests include custom filename choices. Tests cover persistence, defaults, and invalid stored settings. The README describes these settings.
Filename generation and export wiring
content.js, tests/content.test.js
The content script sanitizes custom names and applies them to transaction, graph, snapshot, and BudgetLens exports. Blank or unusable names use dated defaults. Tests cover default names, extensions, and sanitization.

Explanation

The title "feat: add custom export file names and remember popup settings" follows Conventional Commits and matches the main changes. The PR adds optional custom filenames for each export type in the popup Advanced section, with extension handling and sanitization in content.js and popup.js. It also persists popup settings (date range, export options, columns, Fast API) in localStorage. The smaller supporting changes (.gitignore entry, CONTRIBUTING.md and AGENTS.md updates) are not mentioned, which is expected for a title.

Validate saved filename values before restoring them.

If a saved filename is not a string, the current assignment can convert it to input text. An object can become [object Object] and produce an unintended export filename.
