Summary

Stacked on #15 (base is feat/custom-export-file-names); GitHub retargets this to main when #15 is squash merged.

  • add Last 30 Days and Last 90 Days quick date ranges
  • replace the alert() dialogs with an inline status line, and re-enable the export button when the content script reports that the export finished or failed (instead of a fixed 3 second timer)
  • keep the status line in the fixed action bar, directly above the export button, so it is visible in the 600px-tall Chrome popup without scrolling; page padding follows the bar height so nothing is hidden underneath it
  • add CSV conversion edge-case tests (commas, quotes, newlines, column selection, missing fields, empty input)
  • remove background.js and its manifest entry: its only handler called a function that does not exist in the service worker, and the popup talks to the content script directly, so nothing sends it messages
  • document in AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md that fork and local changes should be proposed upstream, UI changes need screenshots, and pull requests are squash merged

Validation

Automated checks:

  • node --check content.js
  • node --check popup.js
  • node --test: 38 passing, including new tests for the quick ranges (month and year boundaries), inline errors, the export button lifecycle, CSV edge cases, and the manifest no longer registering a service worker
  • git diff --check

The popup was also rendered locally at the Chrome popup limit (380x600) with a stubbed chrome API to confirm the status line and export button are visible without scrolling, including with a long error message, and that the footer is not covered by the action bar when scrolled to the bottom (screenshots below).

Not covered: the extension has not been manually tested in Chrome against Credit Karma, so the real exportFinished message from the content script to the open popup is verified by unit tests and the stubbed render only. background.js removal was checked by searching for senders of its message; loading the unpacked extension is still recommended before release.

Walkthrough

The extension removes its background service worker and updates export status handling in the popup. It adds two quick-date ranges and tests for date selection and CSV output. Contributor guidance now covers upstream pull requests, UI screenshots, and squash merging.

Changes: Extension export and popup behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove background worker and update packaging
.github/workflows/*, background.js, manifest.json, tests/manifest.test.js, CONTRIBUTING.md
The manifest and extension archives no longer include background.js. The worker handler and its syntax checks are removed. Manifest tests now check that no service worker is registered.
Report export status in the popup
content.js, popup.html, popup.css, popup.js, tests/popup.test.js
content.js sends export completion messages through the extension runtime. The popup displays success and error status messages and keeps the export button disabled until completion. The status area has accessible announcements and error and success styles.
Add date-range options and export tests
popup.html, popup.js, tests/content.test.js, tests/popup.test.js
The popup adds last-30-day and last-90-day quick ranges. Tests cover quick-range dates and CSV output, including field escaping, selected columns, missing values, and empty transaction lists.

Contributor guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update pull request instructions
AGENTS.md, CONTRIBUTING.md
The guidance covers opening upstream pull requests from forks or local checkouts, screenshots for UI changes, and squash merging after checks pass and changes are verified.

The new date shortcuts include an extra day, and export status can be misleading or delayed in specific cases. These are bounded issues, but they should be corrected or explicitly accepted before release.

Send the failure event before the blocking alert.

The reachable export rejection handler calls alert(...) before notifyExportFinished(...). The popup remains in Processing... until it receives exportFinished, so it cannot show the inline error or re-enable the button while the alert is open. Move notifyExportFinished(...) before alert(...), or remove the alert.

Suggested fix
console.error('Error during data export:', error);
-alert(`Error during data export: ${error.message}`);
notifyExportFinished('error', `Error during data export: ${error.message}`);
+alert(`Error during data export: ${error.message}`);

Select exactly 30 or 90 calendar dates.

The export includes both date inputs. Subtracting 30 days selects 31 calendar dates, including today; the 90-day option selects 91. Subtract days - 1 and update the quick-range test expectations.

Match completion messages to the pending export.

If another Credit Karma tab finishes an export, its exportFinished message can reach this popup. The listener then shows that export’s result and enables the button while this popup’s export is still running. Pass a request ID through the export request and completion message. Reset the button only when the IDs match. Chrome delivers runtime messages to extension listeners and provides sender information. (developer.chrome.com)
