Fixes #86

<BugseeSecure> now publishes only what is on screen. It withdraws while a react-native-screens screen above it is inactive. Coverage is added at once and removed only after a hold, and the per-frame cost is bounded by what moves.

Behaviour

  • Clip. The view's measureInWindow rectangle is cut to every clipping ancestor:

    • a ScrollView host (RCTScrollView, AndroidHorizontalScrollView), unless it is styled overflow: 'visible';
    • any host styled overflow: 'hidden'.

The walk stops at every boundary, and nothing above a boundary clips or hides what is inside it. Boundaries are RootNodeKind hosts (RCTModalHostView, RCTInputAccessoryView, RNSFullWindowOverlay, RNSModalScreen, RNSSplitScreen), RNSFormSheetHost, and any HostPortal.

  • Hide. A view is hidden only when a screen above it has a committed activityState of 0. "Screen" means RNSScreen, or the RNSModalScreen the view is in.

    • The nearest host above that screen must be RNSScreenContainer, RNSScreenNavigationContainer or RNSScreenStack.
    • An Animated activityState on the wrapper counts as visible.
    • display: 'none' and hidden <Activity> content need no rule here: Fabric lays them out 0×0 in the shadow tree, so nothing is published for them.
  • Committed props. Each read resolves the stored ancestor path top-down from the fiber root's current tree, taking whichever fiber of each pair is in the committed child list. It never reads render-phase canonical.currentProps. If the path cannot be resolved, or a props read throws, nothing is hidden or clipped.

  • Hold: add coverage at once, remove it late. It runs on performance.now(), with a Date.now() fallback, so a wall-clock jump ends no hold early.

    • Shadow-tree evidence leads native drawing: a frame or more, and a LayoutAnimation only takes effect at its end.
    • So an instance publishes what it covers now, plus what it stopped covering within SECURE_SHRINK_HOLD_MS (500 ms, exported). The held part is stored as one bounding box per 100 ms window.
    • A hidden view withdraws only after being hidden for that long without a break. Growth is never delayed.
    • Unmount and enabled={false} still clear at once.
    • What is held is what the view covered, not the path between positions. A native animation that carries a view further than its own size in one step draws positions that neither rectangle covers. Main covers them no better.
  • Bounded cost. Each instance is in one of four modes:

Mode When How it is re-measured
tick wholly visible every 100 ms, as on main
active moving, just shown, or newly clipped every frame, until it has stayed put for STEADY_FRAMES (10) frames
parked clipped and still its clipping hosts (each ScrollView and its content container, or an overflow: hidden view) are watched once per frame, shared by every view under them. A move, a viewport change, or a change to a clipper's props (by identity, both fibers) wakes it within that frame. Each frame it also asks whether its screens hide it (once per screen per frame). Every tick re-checks every parked view by measuring the view alone
hidden under an inactive screen each frame asks only whether its screens still hide it (once per screen per frame), and it is measured the frame they stop

    In addition:

    • Every tick and every frame runs as one measure pass. A shared ancestor is measured once, a parent's children are collected once (no O(n²) sibling scan), and every changed lane is published once at the end (publishTogether). A lane whose publish failed is published again by the next tick or frame.
    • A newly watched node is measured at once, to set its baseline.
    • The registry returns at once for an owner republishing exactly what it holds.
  • No native changes. check-rn-compat.sh (0.81–0.87) guards the React and React Native internals this relies on.

Perf (examples/bare/e2e/secure-perf.test.ts)

Device: own headless bugsee_api24 emulator. Cells are p50 / p95 / max in ms; the PR column shows two runs. The baseline is origin/main's BugseeSecure, measureLoop and registry swapped in.

The PR numbers were measured on 5f4dfbd, whose src is the same as 7fa64b1. 58dc051 changes only what happens after a publish has failed.

Budgets the test asserts:

  • Release: p95 < 2 ms for every mode, per tick and per frame.
  • Debug, 20-view modes: p95 < 2 ms.
  • Debug, per frame (every mode): stays under budget.
  • Debug, "many" per tick: p95 < 4 ms, a scoped budget rather than a loosened one.
    • Every tick re-checks every parked view by measuring that view alone. That is the same per-view, per-tick self-measure main makes for every view; React's Debug build spends about 12 µs on each.
    • Main, on the same 200 views, takes 153 ms (Debug) and 70 ms (Release) at p95 per tick, because its registry re-flattened every owner's union for every owner.

Notes:

  • Outliers: one Debug run had single-frame outliers (10 ms and 19.6 ms max) in the scrolling and clipped frame modes. Their p95 stayed at 1.6–1.7 ms; the other run's max was 2.3–2.8 ms.
  • Thread: all of this work runs on the JS thread. Fabric's measureInWindow reads the shadow tree synchronously, so there is no UI-thread or render work.

Known limitations and trade-offs

  • Native overflow changes are not seen. An overflow changed natively (setNativeProps, or a native-driven style) does not reach the committed React props this reads. This gap has existed since round 1.
  • Wake storm. Re-renders of a clipper wake every parked view under it in that frame, because the clipper's props are compared by identity. Frequent re-renders above a ScrollView therefore keep its parked views re-measuring every frame. This is accepted.
  • Hold trail. The hold leaves up to about 600 ms of trailing coverage behind a moving view. That over-masks, and may drop taps near the old position for that long.
  • Path between positions. What is held is what the view covered, not the path between positions. A native animation that moves a view further than its own size in one step draws positions that neither rectangle covers. Main covers them no better.
  • Failed publishes. A lane whose publish keeps failing is retried once per tick and warned about once until it next publishes.

Tests

  • Unit: src/secure passes with 100% coverage. Root yarn test, lint and typecheck pass.
  • Mutation: Stryker scores 100% on ancestry, BugseeSecure, hold, measureLoop and tracker. registry.ts keeps one pre-existing equivalent mutant.
  • Review regressions:
    • Round-4 re-review: a lane whose batched publish keeps failing is retried once per tick (not every frame) and warned about once per outage. The tests fail on 7fa64b1.
    • Round 4 (BugseeSecure.round4.test.tsx: R1, R2, a ScrollView whose overflow becomes visible, a wall-clock jump, and a failed publish on a lane of parked views; plus measureLoop tests for baseline and props identity, and registry retry tests): all fail on 51c6024.
    • Cursor review of ef6cb4c: a parked view under a screen that goes inactive, and a parked view whose viewport grows. Both tests fail on ef6cb4c and are fixed in 51c6024.
    • Round 3 (BugseeSecure.round3.test.tsx, plus tests in hold, tracker, ancestry, measureLoop and registry): 10 of the first 14 component tests fail on 42eb416; the other 4 are controls. A 15th (a layout event on a parked view) was added later and was not run against 42eb416.
    • Round 2: per-frame follow of a scroll into view.
    • Round 1 (BugseeSecure.review.test.tsx): one test per finding.
  • e2e: secure-visible.test.ts (api24) passes 6/6.
  • Device check: the coordinator's playground run (RN 0.87, Expo Router, react-native-screens 4.26.2, Release, API 36) on 42eb416 behaves as designed. The remaining dropped taps come from the native SDK's secure-field rectangles (bugsee-android#269).

measureInWindow on Fabric is shadow-tree layout, with no clipping and no
visibility. A BugseeSecure scrolled out of its ScrollView kept masking
(and, on Android, dropping taps on) what was shown there, such as a bottom
tab bar, and one on an inactive tab that stays mounted kept masking the
other tabs (#86).

The ancestors up to the surface root (the Modal host, or the tree's root)
are now resolved once per mount. Each re-measure reads their committed
props and:
- publishes nothing, measuring nothing, while an ancestor is known to hide
the view: display: 'none', an RNSScreen with activityState 0, or a hidden
  Offscreen (<Activity>);
- intersects the view's rectangle with every ScrollView host
(RCTScrollView, AndroidHorizontalScrollView) and overflow: 'hidden' view
above it, publishing nothing when the intersection is empty.

Committed props come from stateNode.canonical.currentProps, which both
fibers of a Fabric host share (React Native's own getCurrentProps), so a
stale stored fiber does not matter; the Offscreen check reads the
OffscreenVisible bit of the instance both fibers share.

Fails closed: an ancestor that throws, answers late or answers non-finite
leaves the view unclipped; an ancestor that cannot be read hides nothing.
With nothing that clips, a re-measure is still one measurement.

canonical.currentProps, the OffscreenVisible bit and the ScrollView host
type names, in both renderer bundles of every supported version.

secure-visible scrolls a BugseeSecure fully in, partly out, fully out and
back, then flips two sibling "tabs" with display: 'none', and checks what
native says it was given (BugseeRN secure published raw=) against the
viewport-clipped rectangles the scenario measures. Android only: that
publish line is the observation channel.

secure-perf mounts 20 BugseeSecure in four horizontal ScrollViews under
two overflow: 'hidden' views in a scrolling vertical ScrollView and times
every tick of the shared re-measure loop for 35 s through a setInterval
wrapper the app installs around the mount, so the same test times any
version of the package. It asserts p95 < 2 ms.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
Views under one ScrollView all clip to it. Each tick of the shared loop is
now one measure pass: a clipping ancestor's rectangle is measured the first
time a view needs it and reused by the rest of the tick. The tick is one
synchronous stretch of JS, so no commit can move anything during it.
Outside a tick (mount, onLayout) everything is measured afresh.

With 20 views under four clipping ancestors that is 27 measurements a tick
instead of 100.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
Every mounted BugseeSecure republishes its rectangle every 100 ms. Each
call validated it and re-flattened the whole union of every owner on the
lane before finding it unchanged: quadratic in the number of instances,
and on the API 24 emulator about 1.6 ms of a 2 ms tick with 20 of them.

An owner republishing exactly what it holds on the same lane now returns
at once, unless that lane's last publish did not reach the bridge or the
pixel ratio changed since the lane was flattened. Both still republish, so
nothing native needs is skipped.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
The static phase has every view on screen and nothing moving: the most
clipping work and the re-measure cost alone. The scrolling phase moves
every ScrollView every 400 ms. The rows no longer flex-grow, which had
pushed half of them off screen.

Deep review of 9a44bd4 — <BugseeSecure> now clips to ScrollView / overflow: 'hidden' ancestors and withdraws on display: 'none', RNSScreen activityState === 0, or a hidden Offscreen. I read the new ancestry walk against surface.ts, the registry skip, measureLoop, react-native-screens' Fabric host names, and the existing secure tests. I did not run the suite locally (no node_modules in this checkout). GitHub lint, typecheck, unit, mutation shards, and rn compat 0.81–0.87 are green on this HEAD.

Findings

P2 — iOS modal screens never hide

Location: packages/react-native/src/secure/ancestry.ts:167
Problem: Inactive-screen withdrawal is keyed on fiber.type === 'RNSScreen' only.
Impact: The #86 class of bug (a mounted-but-hidden screen keeps masking, and on Android dropping taps on, whatever is shown there) still happens for every iOS react-native-screens modal presentation.
Scenario: InnerScreen in react-native-screens 4.x renders codegenNativeComponent('RNSModalScreen') whenever stackPresentation is modal / transparentModal / fullScreenModal / formSheet / pageSheet (iOS only; Android stays on RNSScreen). Those hosts still carry activityState. A second modal (or a full-screen modal over a card) leaves the first mounted at activityState === 0. Screens modals are not RCTModalHostView, so the rectangle is published on the main surface — the same lane as the screen the user can see. The walk finds the host, reads activityState: 0, and then ignores it because the type is RNSModalScreen.
Fix: Treat screen hosts as a set (RNSScreen, RNSModalScreen), same pattern as SCROLL_HOST_TYPES. Cover RNSModalScreen + activityState 0→2 in the ancestry / visible tests.

Residual (not a finding)

  • JS @react-navigation/stack cards that only fade to opacity: 0 are still treated as visible. That matches the stated "positive evidence only" rule; treating opacity as hidden would unmask during a fade.
  • display: 'none' e2e is a weak guard for the issue's tab case (Yoga already lays that subtree out at 0×0 on main). The RNSScreen path is unit-tested only, as the PR says.
  • One CI job, pack install (0.81, ios), is red; I could not retrieve that log, so I am not treating it as a defect in this diff.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Medium
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes
  3. Fix before merge: Recognize RNSModalScreen as a screen host for activityState.
  4. What works: ScrollView viewport clip (including nested / Android horizontal), committed props via canonical.currentProps rather than a stale fiber, Offscreen via the shared _visibility bit, fail-closed unclipped on a bad ancestor measure, registry skip that still retries a failed publish and a pixel-ratio change, one measure per shared clipper per tick. The 0.81–0.87 compat greps for canonical.currentProps, the OffscreenVisible clear, and the ScrollView host names are the right pins.

Comment thread packages/react-native/src/secure/ancestry.ts Outdated
The review of #87 found ways the first version withdrew or cut short the
region of a view still on screen, each a leak main never had:

- P0-1: canonical.currentProps is written in completeWork, during render.
A suspended, interrupted or abandoned render could hide a screen or clip
a view that never stopped showing. Each tick now resolves the stored
ancestor path top-down from the fiber root's current tree (its child and
sibling links are the committed ones), taking whichever fiber of each
pair is a child of the current parent, and reads memoizedProps there. A
path that does not resolve hides and clips nothing.
- P0-1, P2-1: display: 'none' is no longer read from props. The shadow
tree already lays it out at 0x0, which publishes nothing.
- P0-2: an activityState that a wrapper between the screen host and the
host above it sets to an object (an Animated node, driven by native
  without a commit) hides nothing.
- P0-3: a ScrollView styled overflow: 'visible' clips nothing (iOS sets
  clipsToBounds from getClipsContentToBounds).
- P0-4: the walk stops at every RootNodeKind host: RCTModalHostView,
  RCTInputAccessoryView, RNSFullWindowOverlay, RNSModalScreen and
RNSSplitScreen. Nothing above one clips or hides what is inside.
- P1-1: a hidden Offscreen no longer hides. Fabric hides its hosts with
display: 'none' in the shadow tree (0x0), except a frozen RNSScreen,
which nulls display to stay drawn and must stay masked.
- P1-2: a withdrawn view checks again every frame (requestAnimationFrame,
props only), so it is masked again within a frame of showing.
- P3-1: any read error leaves the whole tick unclipped and not hidden.
- P3-2: an ancestor measured exactly 0/0/0/0 (Fabric's answer for a node
  it cannot find) clips nothing.

BugseeSecure.review.test.tsx holds a test per finding; 17 of its 19
failed against the previous version.

Replaces the canonical.currentProps and OffscreenVisible checks, which the
ancestry no longer reads, with: the commit's root.current assignment and
the alternate pairing, the display: none clone of hidden Offscreen hosts,
the exact set of React Native's RootNodeKind components and their paper
names, and the iOS ScrollView's clipsToBounds following
getClipsContentToBounds.

A third mode, watch, times every frame for 20 s what BugseeSecure's frame
callback runs for each withdrawn view (isHidden, props only), for all 20
views at once. It deep-imports the ancestry module, as the channel
scenario does.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
react-native-screens' iOS modals mount RNSModalScreen, which takes
activityState like RNSScreen. It is root-kind, so it still ends the walk:
it can hide what is inside it, with the same committed-fiber and Animated
rules, but never clips it, and nothing above it hides or clips.

Re-review of 3114dc0 (prior assessment was 9a44bd4). I re-read ancestry.ts, BugseeSecure.tsx, measureLoop.ts, registry.ts, surface.ts, the new review/visible/ancestry tests, check-rn-compat.sh, and react-native-screens 4.26 InnerScreen (shouldUseModalScreenComponent → RNSModalScreen on iOS modal presentations). I did not run the suite locally (no node_modules in this checkout). GitHub lint, typecheck, unit, rn compat 0.81–0.87, and pack install (0.81, ios) are green on this HEAD (the last of those was red on the previous assessment).

Prior finding

P2 — iOS modal screens never hide is fully addressed in 3114dc0. RNSModalScreen is collected as a boundary screen host: it hides on a committed activityState === 0 with the same current-fiber + Animated-wrapper rules as RNSScreen, it never clips (host.boundary), and the walk still ends there so nothing above it (including a covered parent RNSScreen) can hide or clip what is inside. Covered by ancestry.test.ts (0 hides, 2 does not, Animated does not, never clips) and BugseeSecure.review.test.tsx (withdrawn while inactive, back within a frame).

Findings

No remaining P0–P3. I tried to break committed-path resolve (WIP/canonical vs root.current), StyleSheet overflow (on 0.81+ StyleSheet.create is identity, so object styles work), activityState 1 under a transparent modal (screens keep that screen at 1, not 0, so it stays masked), freeze/Offscreen (layout already 0×0 except a frozen RNSScreen, which they still mask when activityState is 2), and clip-to-stored-fiber vs resolved fiber (Fabric host stateNode/canonical is shared across the pair; the public instance is cached on first lookup).

Residual (not a finding)

  • An activityState that is an Animated node still stays masked, by the stated “positive committed evidence only” rule. Older @react-navigation/bottom-tabs versions that interpolated activityState with Animated would keep the #86 over-mask; current number-valued 0/1/2 (including the Expo Router tabs they dogfooded) withdraw.
  • JS @react-navigation/stack cards that only fade to opacity: 0 are still treated as visible.
  • display: 'none' e2e is still a weak stand-in for the inactive-tab case; the RNSScreen / RNSModalScreen path is unit-tested.
  • surface.ts still maps only RCTModalHostView. An active RNSModalScreen (formSheet / pageSheet) publishes measureInWindow coords, which stop at that RootNodeKind, on MAIN_SURFACE. That coordinate mismatch is pre-existing, not introduced by clipping.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Low
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve
  3. Fix before merge: none
  4. What works: ScrollView viewport clip (nested + Android horizontal, overflow: 'visible' opt-out), committed-fiber resolve instead of in-flight canonical.currentProps, fail-closed unclipped on a bad ancestor measure, registry skip that still retries a failed publish and a pixel-ratio change, shared clipper measure per tick, rAF remask within a frame of showing, and RNSModalScreen as a hide-only boundary.

A view scrolling into a ScrollView's viewport was clipped to nothing on
the previous re-measure, so the part entering view could be unmasked for
up to a 100 ms tick (main's mask trailed instead of being absent).

While its published rectangle is smaller than the view, or empty, an
instance now re-measures before every frame, like a withdrawn one. One
shared frame callback (requestAnimationFrame, or a 16 ms timer where
there is none) runs every per-frame instance in one measure pass, so a
shared ScrollView is measured once a frame. An instance leaves it once
wholly visible (back to the 100 ms tick), and on unmount or disable; it
skips the tick while on it. No margin: one would bring back the tab-bar
over-masking #86 is about.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
Clipped views now re-measure every frame and skip the tick, so each of
static, scrolling and the new clipped mode also reports <mode>-frames:
every frame callback, timed through a requestAnimationFrame wrapper the
scenario installs for the mode. In clipped, every view is taller than its
row, so all 20 are partly clipped and on the per-frame path, nudged every
400 ms: the worst case.

Re-review of 42eb416 (prior assessments: 9a44bd4, then 3114dc0). Round 2 (d583114 + 42eb416) puts a clipped (or fully clipped-away) instance on a shared per-frame loop and skips the 100 ms tick while it is there, so a part scrolling into view is masked within a frame instead of staying unmasked until the next tick.

I re-read BugseeSecure.tsx, measureLoop.ts, ancestry.ts, registry.ts, surface.ts, the fiber public-instance path, check-rn-compat.sh, issue #86, and the new review / visible / measureLoop / e2e tests. I did not run the suite locally (no node_modules in this checkout). GitHub lint, typecheck, unit, rn compat 0.81–0.87, pack-install, playground, android, and iOS unit/e2e are green on this HEAD. Two mutation (src) shards were still running when I posted.

Prior finding

P2 — iOS modal screens never hide is still fully addressed. RNSModalScreen remains a hide-only boundary (host.screen && host.boundary): committed activityState === 0 withdraws, Animated wrappers do not, it never clips, and the walk still ends there.

Round 2 (what I tried to break)

The shared frame loop is the new risk surface. I could not construct a production failure:

  • Join/leave. Clipped → addFrameMeasurer; wholly visible → remover + everyFrame = null. Hidden uses the same loop and still skips measureInWindow. Tick wrapper is everyFrame.current === null, so a clipped view is not measured twice. Covered by BugseeSecure.review.test.tsx (enter viewport in one frame, horizontal-only clip, leave once wholly visible, skip the tick, many views one callback / one pass) and measureLoop.test.ts (shared rAF, last-leave cancel, leave-during-frame, throw isolation, timer fallback, frame beside tick).
  • Lifecycle of cancelFrame. frame() clears it at the start of the running callback, so removing the last measurer mid-pass does not cancel the in-flight frame, and the post-pass size > 0 check is what schedules the next one. Adding during a pass (??=) cannot double-register; a new instance after stop starts the loop again.
  • Hidden → visible → clipped in one callback stays on the loop; clipped → hidden keeps the existing registration and becomes props-only. Unmount/enabled={false} always removes both loops and clearOwner.
  • Fail-closed is unchanged: unreadable path, throwing props, late/non-finite ancestor, 0/0/0/0 ancestor → unclipped / not hidden. A NaN self-measure still keeps the last rectangle.
  • Registry skip still retries a failed publish and a pixel-ratio change; per-frame republish of an unchanged rect is a comparison only.

Findings

No remaining P0–P3.

Residual (not a finding)

  • A wholly visible instance still lives on the 100 ms tick, so the first pixels of a scroll out (and an activityState 0 tab switch of a fully on-screen field) can lag by up to a tick. That is the stated trade: a margin, or putting every instance on rAF, is how #86’s tab-bar over-mask would come back. Native pull is ~350 ms; clipped / withdrawn paths are now within a frame.
  • overflow: 'scroll' on a non-ScrollView host is still not treated as clipping (overflow === 'hidden' only). ScrollView already uses overflow !== 'visible', matching getClipsContentToBounds(). A plain View with overflow: 'scroll' (NativeWind overflow-scroll) is uncommon.
  • Animated activityState, JS stack opacity: 0 cards, display: 'none' e2e as a weak tab stand-in, and RNSModalScreen formSheet coords on MAIN_SURFACE are unchanged from the last review.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Low
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve
  3. Fix before merge: none
  4. What works: Viewport clip (nested / Android horizontal / overflow: 'visible' opt-out), committed-fiber resolve, RNSModalScreen as a hide-only boundary, fail-closed unclipped on a bad ancestor, registry skip that still retries, shared clipper measure per pass, and the new shared rAF loop so a clipped region follows a scroll into view within a frame without paying that cost once it is wholly on screen.

P1, the shadow tree leads native: measureInWindow and committed props
describe the shadow tree, which native draws a frame or more later (a
LayoutAnimation only at its end). Coverage is now added at once and
removed late: an instance publishes the union of what it covers now and
what it stopped covering in the last SECURE_SHRINK_HOLD_MS (500 ms,
exported), kept as one bounding box per 100 ms window. A hidden instance
withdraws only once hidden that long without a break; growth is never
delayed; unmount and enabled={false} still clear at once.

P2, bounded per-frame cost. A per-instance state machine (tracker.ts):
- tick: wholly visible, on the 100 ms tick as on main;
- active: moving, just shown or newly clipped, measured every frame until
  still for STEADY_FRAMES (10) frames (P3-5);
- parked: clipped and still. Its clipping nodes (a ScrollView's content
container, or the clipping view) are watched once a frame, shared by
every instance under them, and a move wakes it within the frame; the tick
  also re-checks parked instances in turn, PARKED_CHECKS_PER_TICK (32) a
  tick, measuring the view alone;
- hidden: each frame asks only whether its screens still hide it, resolved
down to the nearest screen once a pass per screen, and is measured the
  frame they do not.
Each pass collects a parent's children once, so siblings in a long list
are no longer scanned once per view. Resolution is not kept across passes:
React keeps no commit count and root.current alternates between the same
two fibers, so a cached level cannot be told from one two commits stale.

P3: the walk stops at a HostPortal and at RNSFormSheetHost; a host's props
are recorded only after its style was read; the frame loop requests its
next frame in a finally; activityState 0 hides only under
RNSScreenContainer, RNSScreenNavigationContainer or RNSScreenStack.

Every instance re-measured in one tick or frame changes its lane, and each
change re-flattened the lane's whole union and crossed the bridge: with 20
moving instances holding a few rectangles each that is a quadratic burst
(clipped-mode p95 was 5.5 ms a tick, 4.6 ms a frame on Debug API 24).
publishTogether defers the lanes changed inside it and publishes each once
at the end; the tick and the frame loop run inside it. A lane whose
publish throws is logged and, having no recorded scale, retried by its
next change.

secure-perf-many mounts 200 BugseeSecure in four still ScrollViews (each
100 dp tall, 50 views stacked), so every view is partly clipped or out of
sight, and times ticks (`many`) and frame callbacks (`many-frames`) for
40 s once they have settled. A frame must stay near nothing (p95 < 0.5 ms)
and a tick under the 2 ms budget.

Re-review of ef6cb4c (prior assessments: 9a44bd4, 3114dc0, then 42eb416). Round 3 (ec4913f + 9437b9a + perf/comment follow-ups) adds shrink-late hold, a tick/active/parked/hidden tracker, shared clip-node watches, parked-turn rechecks, and publishTogether.

I re-read tracker.ts, hold.ts, ancestry.ts, measureLoop.ts, registry.ts, BugseeSecure.tsx, surface.ts, round-1/2/3 tests, and the clipWatchNodes / parked-loop tests against issue #86. I did not run the suite locally (no node_modules in this checkout). GitHub lint, typecheck, unit, rn compat 0.81–0.87, pack-install, and playground android/typecheck are green on this HEAD. iOS e2e, android, and several mutation shards were still running when I posted.

Prior finding

P2 — iOS modal screens never hide is still fully addressed. RNSModalScreen remains a hide-only boundary: committed activityState === 0 under a screens container withdraws, Animated wrappers do not, it never clips, and the walk still ends there.

Findings

Round 3 parks a clipped, still instance and drops its frame callback. Round 2 measured every clipped view every frame, so isHidden and clip-ancestor bounds were re-read continuously. Parked mode only wakes if the view's own measureInWindow changes or a watched content node moves. That is deaf to the two #86 signals that do not move those nodes.

P1 — a parked view never re-checks inactive screens

Location: packages/react-native/src/secure/tracker.ts:153
A clipped field on a still-mounted tab stays published after activityState goes to 0. Details in the inline comment.

P1 — a parked view never sees its ScrollView viewport change

Location: packages/react-native/src/secure/ancestry.ts:371
clipWatchNodes watches the content container, not the clipper. KeyboardAvoidingView / adjustResize can reveal or cover the field with no self-rect change. Details in the inline comment.

Residual (not a finding)

  • Wholly-visible instances still live on the 100 ms tick (stated trade vs #86 over-mask).
  • Hold of 500 ms after a tick-mode tab switch is the stated shrink-late policy; it over-masks the incoming screen for that long, then withdraws. Parked is worse: it never withdraws.
  • RNSFormSheetHost is a clip/hide boundary and does not read experimental isOpen. Common stackPresentation: 'formSheet' still goes through RNSModalScreen.
  • Animated activityState, JS stack opacity: 0 cards, and formSheet coords on MAIN_SURFACE are unchanged.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Medium
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes
  3. Fix before merge: Parked views must re-check screens (cheap screensHide, same cache as hidden) and must watch the ScrollView host as well as its content.
  4. What works: Committed-fiber resolve, RNSModalScreen hide-only boundary, fail-closed unclipped on a bad ancestor, hold's add-now/remove-late for instances that still measure, publishTogether, sibling-list scan once a pass, and the 200-view parked cost bound — once parking actually wakes on hide and viewport.

Two holes in parking, raised by the Cursor review of ef6cb4c:

- A parked view re-checked hiding only when measured, and nothing measured
it when its screen went inactive: an inactive screen keeps its layout and
moves no watched node. Parked views now stay on frames for the screen
check alone (screensHide: once per screen a frame, nothing without a
screen), and are measured, then held and withdrawn, the frame it hides.
- A parked view watched only its ScrollView's content, so a viewport that
grew (a keyboard dismissed under adjustResize or KeyboardAvoidingView)
uncovered more of the view without waking it. Every clipping host is now
watched itself, and a ScrollView's content as well.

Re-review of 51c6024 (prior assessments: 9a44bd4, 3114dc0, 42eb416, ef6cb4c). 51c6024 puts parked views back on the shared frame loop for screensHide only, and clipWatchNodes now watches every clipping host plus a ScrollView's content container.

I re-read tracker.ts (onFrame / enter / next / watch), ancestry.ts (clipWatchNodes, screensHide, isHidden, screenHides), measureLoop.ts (watch-then-frame order), hold.ts, registry.ts, BugseeSecure.tsx, the new round3/tracker/ancestry cases, and the #86 inactive-tab / keyboard-viewport scenarios the last review used. I did not run the suite locally (no node_modules in this checkout). GitHub lint, typecheck, unit, rn compat 0.81–0.87, pack-install, android, and iOS unit/e2e are green on this HEAD. Playground iOS and several mutation shards were still running when I posted.

Prior findings

P2 — iOS modal screens never hide is still fully addressed (RNSModalScreen remains a hide-only boundary).

P1 — parked views never re-check activityState is fully addressed in 51c6024. Parked stays on addFrameMeasurer; onFrame runs screensHide (cached once per screen per pass, immediate false with no screen) and measure()s the frame it is true, which holds then enters hidden. Frame order is watchNodes then measurers, so a same-frame clip move still unparks and measures. Covered by BugseeSecure.round3.test.tsx (parked → inactive screen → [] after the hold; fails on ef6cb4c) and tracker.test.ts (parked, the frame its screens hide it…).

P1 — parked views never see ScrollView viewport growth is fully addressed in 51c6024. clipWatchNodes returns [content, clipper] for a scrolling host and [clipper] otherwise, so a viewport resize with a still content container wakes within a frame. Covered by BugseeSecure.round3.test.tsx (a parked view follows its ScrollView viewport growing, within a frame).

Findings

No remaining P0–P3. I tried to break: parked screensHide vs isHidden (hidden is decided in measure() after the screen signal, so a true hide still holds then withdraws); watch-then-enter('active') then same-pass onFrame measure; overflow:hidden hosts (already self-watched); enter('tick') now assuming a frame registration (every non-tick mode has one; stop() from tick is a no-op); Paper/async self-measure (hide still short-circuits before measureInWindow); hold expiry while parked (tick still republishes publishable until holding() is false).

Residual (not a finding)

  • Wholly-visible instances still live on the 100 ms tick (stated trade vs #86 over-mask).
  • Animated activityState, JS stack opacity: 0 cards, and formSheet coords on MAIN_SURFACE are unchanged.
  • Parked now pays a cheap per-instance screensHide plus one extra shared measureInWindow of each ScrollView host per frame; the 200-view e2e budget is the check, and unit tests still assert the view itself is not re-measured while parked.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Low
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve
  3. Fix before merge: none
  4. What works: Viewport clip, committed-fiber resolve, RNSModalScreen hide-only boundary, shrink-late hold, publishTogether, parked cost bound, and the two round-4 holes: inactive-tab withdraw from parked, and keyboard/viewport growth while parked.

…ound 4)

Review round 4 of #87 found two under-mask paths in parked mode:

- P1-1: a parked view never re-read its clipper's props, so a commit to
overflow: 'visible' (on a View or a ScrollView) that moved nothing left
only the old slice published. Every watched clipper now also compares
its two fibers' props objects by identity each frame, and a change wakes
every view under it, which re-reads how it clips (R1).
- P2-1: the tick re-checked parked views 32 at a time, so with 200 a
layout shift that moved one into view went unmasked for up to ~700 ms.
Every tick now re-checks every parked view by measuring it alone, as a
  tick-mode view is measured: per-tick O(n), per-frame nothing (R2).

And the P3s:
- a newly watched node is measured at once, as the baseline for its first
  frame;
- the hold runs on performance.now (Date.now where there is none), so a
  wall-clock jump ends no hold early;
- a lane whose batched publish failed is published again by the next tick
  or frame, changed or not, so a lane of parked views is retried too;
- hold.ts documents that the path between two far-apart positions is not
held, as main does not cover it either.

A watched node that throws now reads as one that does not answer.

Re-review of 7fa64b1 (prior assessments: 9a44bd4, 3114dc0, 42eb416, ef6cb4c, 51c6024). Round 4 wakes a parked view when a clipper’s committed props change (overflow that stops clipping moves nothing), and the tick re-checks every parked view rather than 32 at a time.

I re-read tracker.ts, measureLoop.ts (watchNodes / propsOf / checkParked / watchNode baseline), ancestry.ts (clipWatchNodes, screensHide, refresh), hold.ts, registry.ts (publishTogether + failed), BugseeSecure.tsx, round-3/4 tests, and the #86 inactive-tab / keyboard-viewport / overflow-visible scenarios. I did not run the suite locally (no node_modules in this checkout). GitHub lint, typecheck, unit, rn compat 0.81–0.87, pack-install, android, iOS unit/e2e, and playground android/js are green on this HEAD. P1 — parked views never re-check activityState is still fully addressed. Parked stays on addFrameMeasurer; onFrame runs screensHide and measure()s the frame it is true.

P1 — parked views never see ScrollView viewport growth is still fully addressed. clipWatchNodes still returns [content, clipper] for a scrolling host.

Round 4

R1 (overflow: visible while parked) is fully addressed. watchNodes compares both fibers’ memoizedProps by identity, then enter('active') runs before the same pass’s onFrame measure(), which re-reads refresh() / clipToAncestors. Covered by BugseeSecure.round4.test.tsx (View and ScrollView; author: failed on 51c6024).

R2 (32 parked checks / tick) is fully addressed. checkParked now measures every parked instance each tick. Covered by the 200-view layout-shift case (ms <= 116) and the round-3 test now expecting 40/40.

The P3s land: a new watch baselines whereNow immediately; hold uses monotonicNow() (performance.now, Date.now only if it is missing); a lane whose batched publish threw is in the next publishTogether even if nothing on it changed.

I tried to break: WIP memoizedProps identity waking then resolve()/refresh() still reading root.current (extra active frames, not a leak); onTick hold-publish then checkParked in one publishTogether; failed tick publish retried by the next frame because parked is already on that loop; screensHide still the only parked hide signal (overflow is the watch, not the screen check).

Findings

No remaining P0–P3.

Residual (not a finding)

  • Wholly-visible instances still live on the 100 ms tick (stated trade vs #86 over-mask).
  • Animated activityState, JS stack opacity: 0 cards, overflow: 'scroll'/'clip' on a non-ScrollView host, and formSheet coords on MAIN_SURFACE are unchanged.
  • Any commit that replaces a watched clipper’s props object (including an unrelated parent re-render) wakes parked descendants for STEADY_FRAMES frames. That is the stated overflow-detection rule, not a leak; the 200-view still case stays cheap per frame.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Low
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve
  3. Fix before merge: none
  4. What works: Viewport clip, committed-fiber resolve, RNSModalScreen hide-only boundary, shrink-late hold, publishTogether with failed-lane retry, parked screen check, viewport watch, and the two round-4 holes: clipper overflow: 'visible' while parked, and a layout shift of one of many parked views within a tick.

Every tick re-checks every parked view by measuring it alone: O(n) per tick,
the per-view self-measure main makes for every view. Release keeps p95 < 2
ms everywhere; Debug keeps it for the 20-view modes and for every frame
mode; the 200-view mode's Debug tick budget is 4 ms, with main's number
for the same views in the PR.

Round-4 re-review: a lane whose batched publish keeps throwing was retried
by every publishTogether, so every frame, and warned about every time. It
is now retried only by the tick (publishTogether's retryFailed, at most
every 100 ms), and warned about once until it next publishes. A frame that
changes the lane still publishes it at once.

Also documents in BugseeSecure's JSDoc that an overflow changed natively
(setNativeProps, a native-driven style) is not seen, and records main's
200-view numbers beside the scoped Debug budget in secure-perf.

Re-review of 58dc051 (prior assessment 7fa64b1). Two follow-ups: Debug 200-view tick budget scoped to 4 ms (5f4dfbd), and failed batched lanes retried by the tick only, with one warning per lane per outage (58dc051).

I re-read registry.ts publishTogether(changes, retryFailed), measureLoop.ts (tick passes true, frames do not), the new registry/measureLoop tests, the round-4 parked failed-publish case, and the JSDoc note on native-driven overflow. I did not run the suite locally (no node_modules in this checkout). CI on this HEAD was still starting when I posted.

Prior findings

P2 — iOS modal screens, P1 — parked activityState, P1 — parked viewport growth, R1 — overflow: visible while parked, and R2 — every parked view each tick are still fully addressed. Hold remains monotonicNow(); parked still screensHides every frame.

This push

Failed-lane retry no longer rides every publishTogether (that was every frame while anything was parked or hidden). The tick still retries, so a parked lane whose last publish threw is sent again within 100 ms even if nothing moved — inside the SDK pull interval, and the round-4 test still expects the retry on a tick. A frame that actually changes the lane still publishes it in that pass. A later successful change is not native-called again by the next retry (registry skip); failed can keep the lane until that tick, which then skip-publishes. One warning per outage is keyed per display:surface.

The 4 ms Debug budget for 200 still clipped views matches the new O(n) parked self-measure (they cite ~2.5 ms / 12 µs per view); Release and all frame modes stay on the 2 ms / 0.5 ms bars. Main on the same 200 was far slower.

I tried to break: nested publishTogether dropping retryFailed (tick is not nested in a frame); a change-publish of a failed lane leaving it in failed until the next tick (skip, not a double native write); a new surface failing on a display that already has a warned lane (second warning, covered).

Findings

No remaining P0–P3.

Residual (not a finding)

  • Wholly-visible 100 ms tick, Animated activityState, JS stack opacity: 0, overflow: 'scroll'/'clip' on a non-ScrollView, formSheet coords on MAIN_SURFACE, and native-driven overflow (setNativeProps) — the last now documented on BugseeSecure.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Low
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve
  3. Fix before merge: none
  4. What works: Same as 7fa64b1, plus tick-only failed-lane retry and one warn per outage so a down bridge does not log or republish every frame.

Re-review of 58dc051 (prior assessments: 9a44bd4, 3114dc0, 42eb416, ef6cb4c, 51c6024, 7fa64b1). This HEAD retries a failed batched publish once per tick (not every frame) and warns once per lane per outage.

I re-read registry.ts (publishTogether / failed / warned), measureLoop.ts (tick vs frame), tracker.ts (onTick / onFrame / checkParked / watch), ancestry.ts (screensHide, clipWatchNodes, clipToAncestors, committed-path resolve), hold.ts, BugseeSecure.tsx, the round-3/4 and registry retry tests, and the #86 inactive-tab / scrolled-under-tab-bar / keyboard-viewport / overflow-visible cases. I did not run the suite locally (no node_modules in this checkout). GitHub lint, typecheck, unit, rn compat 0.81–0.87, pack-install, android, and iOS unit/e2e are green on this HEAD. Prior findings

P2 — iOS modal screens never hide is still fully addressed (RNSModalScreen remains a hide-only boundary).

P1 — parked views never re-check activityState is still fully addressed. Parked stays on addFrameMeasurer; onFrame runs screensHide and measure()s the frame it is true.

P1 — parked views never see ScrollView viewport growth is still fully addressed. clipWatchNodes watches the clipping host and a ScrollView's content.

Round 4 (R1/R2 at 7fa64b1) is still fully addressed: watched clippers compare both fibers' props identity; every parked view is re-checked every tick; new watches baseline immediately; hold uses performance.now.

58dc051 (what I tried to break)

The round-4 retry ran on every publishTogether, so every frame, and warned every time. I could not construct a production failure of the tick-only retry:

  • Tick vs frame. tick() passes retryFailed: true; frame() does not. A frame that changes the lane still publishes it through publishOrDefer. A parked, non-holding lane whose last batched publish threw is retried on the next tick (≤100 ms), under the SDK's ~350 ms pull.
  • Copy-then-clear. Failed lanes are copied into deferred before changes(), then failed is replaced. A throwing changes() still publishes in finally (covered). A later change that already reached the bridge is not published again by the retry (sameList skip).
  • Warn once per outage. warned is per display:surface. A new surface on a display that is already failing still warns. Success (including a skip of an unchanged union) clears the keys so the next outage warns again.
  • Every instance keeps a tick measurer, including parked/hidden/active, so retries keep running while any <BugseeSecure> is mounted.

Parked overflow-visible, inactive-screen withdrawal, and viewport growth still hold on this HEAD.

Findings

No remaining P0–P3.

Overall risk: Low

Merge recommendation: approve.

Most important issues to fix: none.

Positive: The #86 clip/hide policy is still fail-closed on unreadable ancestry; the tracker keeps per-frame cost on what moves; 58dc051 matches the retry to the tick without dropping parked-lane recovery. Tests in registry.test.ts / measureLoop.test.ts fail on 7fa64b1 as claimed.

- R4-2: a transform animated from JS (useNativeDriver: false) moves the view
every frame with no wrapped call: a Pending level runs while a root has
an animation or tracking, and the frame loop stops once it ends.
- R4-1: Android renders a vertical ScrollView's content through the View
component: the content container's host is found through up to four
components, for the contentOffset bound and for #87's clip watch (a
parked view under a vertical Android ScrollView was woken only on the
tick). The shared test fixture now has Android's shape.
- P3: React Native's internals are required in try blocks (optional to
Metro: a moved file builds and follows nothing); the attach wakes again
once counted; a value JS set while attached is unknown after the last
detach; a ScrollView under a scale other than 1 is unbounded; the fling
margin is 64 dp, documented as an assumption; the compat guard checks the
four paths and Android's content container; docs.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Secure areas now track visible content more accurately while scrolling or clipping, and respond to hidden screens and layout changes.
    • Previous coverage is retained briefly when content moves, shrinks, or becomes obscured, reducing the chance of exposing it during transitions.
    • Coverage updates recover more reliably from measurement or publishing failures and refresh when content becomes visible again.
  • Performance
    • Improved tracking efficiency for screens with many secure areas.

BugseeSecure now uses a per-instance tracker to measure secure views, clip their rectangles against readable ancestors, and account for inactive screens. Coverage that shrinks or becomes hidden remains published for a limited hold period. Shared interval and frame scheduling coordinates measurements, while the registry batches lane updates and retries failed publishes. The pull request also adds tests and example scenarios for clipping, hidden tabs, movement, and performance with 20 or 200 secure views.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7ed2f

This change clips secure-view coverage to the visible region and withdraws it while a screen is hidden. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains in the supplied changes. The perf scenario's documentation now matches what it measures.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 58dc0

Two conditional paths can leave visible sensitive content outside the recording mask: native-only clipping changes and a failed publication when an offscreen view becomes visible. Conservative fallbacks and isolated ownership reduce the risk, but these paths weaken the component’s privacy guarantee.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Redaction now treats committed React overflow props as evidence of native clipping. If setNativeProps or another native-driven update stops an ancestor clipping without changing those props, the tracker continues publishing only the old intersection, potentially exposing visible sensitive pixels outside it. The component documentation explicitly acknowledges this limitation. Committed overflow changes are detected, but that countermeasure does not observe native-only changes. The base published the whole measured view, so this is an introduced privacy limitation rather than an unchanged condition.
  • Medium · security · inferred: A fully clipped parked view can remain unmasked after a failed direct layout publication. When layout reveals it, measured records lastSelf and updates the hold before publishing. If that native call throws, execution never reaches the mode transition: the view remains parked, with no previous visible rectangle to hold. Subsequent parked checks see the same lastSelf and skip measurement, while the tick has nothing held to publish. Direct publications do not enter the failed-publication queue. With unchanged watched ancestors and no other owner publishing on the same display and surface, recovery can remain stalled after the bridge recovers. Batched failures are retried, but the existing retry test exercises that different path; the base’s periodic full measurement would retry.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected security asset is visible content that applications expect BugseeSecure to exclude from recording. Exposure is conditional on affected UI behavior or publication failure within an application’s display and surface. A remote trigger, cross-tenant path, or privilege gain was not established by the inspected evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained concerns are privacy-enforcement paths, not demonstrated attacker-controlled entrypoints: stale clipping evidence can omit pixels from the native mask, and a failed direct publication can leave newly visible coverage absent while tracking remains parked. Both differ materially from the base’s full-rectangle periodic publication.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Each component uses a unique object token, separate from manual owners. Screen-based withdrawal requires committed activityState zero beneath a recognized screen container; object-valued animated activity state prevents that withdrawal. These controls limit ownership interference and avoid relying on render-phase screen state.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The registry records successful publication only after the native call returns and invalidates its scale shortcut before attempting a changed publication. This supports retry correctness once publication is requested again, but does not itself ensure that every failed direct update is scheduled for retry.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Provide an explicit conservative full-coverage mode for ancestors whose clipping can change outside React commits, or obtain authoritative native clipping evidence before removing coverage.
  • proposed — Track every failed native publication as pending work, including direct layout and delayed-callback publications, so recovery does not depend on movement, retained boxes, or another owner updating.

Explanation

Issue #86 requires three coding outcomes: visible-region publication, withdrawal while a mounted host screen is inactive or detached, and an e2e test that keeps BugseeSecure in tab A, taps tab B at the same location, and verifies the tap is recorded. The changed implementation and unit tests cover clipping and inactive-screen withdrawal. examples/bare/e2e/secure-visible.test.ts covers clipping and visibility phases, but it uses display: 'none' and does not execute or verify the required inactive-screen tab-A/tab-B tap scenario. The PR description confirms that this e2e case remains a follow-up.

197-209: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy lift

The tab phases do not test the new inactive-screen withdrawal.

The scenario hides the inactive tab with display: 'none'. Fabric measures a display: 'none' subtree as 0x0. The code on main already published nothing for a 0x0 view. These two tests therefore pass with or without this PR.

The new behaviour is withdrawal under an inactive react-native-screens screen (activityState 0 under a screens container), through isHidden, screensHide and CoverageHold. No device test covers it. Issue #86 asks for an e2e test with these steps:

  1. Show tab B.
  2. Tap where tab A's secure view was.
  3. Check that the SDK records the tap.

Add a scenario that mounts the two tabs under a react-native-screens container. Assert that tab A's rectangle is gone after SECURE_SHRINK_HOLD_MS, and that the tap in tab B is recorded.

The watch mode times isHidden, not the per-frame screensHide a withdrawn
view runs. These views have no screen above them, so screensHide would
return at once; isHidden stays the timed path, and the comments now say
it is an upper bound (CodeRabbit on #87).

On the CodeRabbit nitpick for examples/bare/e2e/secure-visible.test.ts:197-209 (the tab phases use display: 'none', so they do not exercise withdrawal under an inactive react-native-screens screen): true, and not done in this PR, on purpose.

  • The bare e2e app does not depend on react-native-screens (examples/bare/package.json); adding a native dependency to the e2e app, its pods and Gradle wiring, plus a device run, is out of scope for this fix.
  • The screens path (activityState 0 / 2, the Animated activityState, RNSModalScreen, committed vs in-flight props, CoverageHold) is covered by unit tests in src/secure at 100% coverage and mutation-tested.
  • The device check of the tab case under react-native-screens was done in the playground app (Expo, react-native-screens 4.26), as recorded in the PR's validation notes.

The display: 'none' phases stay as a regression check of the "0x0 publishes nothing" path. A react-native-screens device scenario is a reasonable follow-up once the bare app takes that dependency.

Where it can draw the view is bounded from the Animated nodes (value,

* BugseeSecure: cover native transitions and native-driven transforms

Follow-up to #87, from the Android deep test (phase 1):
- W1: a screen popped off a react-native-screens stack is drawn sliding out
after React unmounted it, and the box was withdrawn at once. Unmounting now
removes coverage late (SECURE_SHRINK_HOLD_MS), and a view whose stack screen

* BugseeSecure: tests for every transition and native-animation branch

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)

* e2e secure-transitions, and a compat guard for the internals it reads

The bare app gains a secure-transitions scenario (an in-place unmount, a
slide Modal opening and closing, a native-driven translateX), checked
against native's own log of each publish. check-rn-compat.sh pins the
fiber `deletions` list and the Animated fields the new code reads.

* BugseeSecure: hold a transition's cover 600 ms, and none for a fading Modal

On an API 30 emulator a 1 s cover blacked the whole screen in the video for
about a second on every push and pop, well past the 200-450 ms animation.
A fading Modal does not move the view, so the hold every unmount gets
covers it.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)

* BugseeSecure: re-measure every frame under any native-driven transform

On the API 30 emulator, an Animated.loop restarting reset its value at
once, natively, while the view was on the 100 ms tick: the box was drawn
up to a tick away from its mask. A native animation can start, or its value
jump, on any frame, and only the nodes say so.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)

* BugseeSecure: review fixes for transitions and Animated components

From the Cursor review of #88:
- A view under any Animated component is re-measured every frame, never
parked: a native animation that starts later moves nothing JS sees.
- A carrier mounted with the whole tree (an app starting) is not a
transition: something above it must have been there before.
- A view carried in but not laid out yet (0x0) covers nothing from there;
while it settles, the cover follows where it rests, joined with where it
  rested before.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)

* BugseeSecure: cover a Modal set visible={false} while it stays mounted

On iOS a <Modal> keeps its host mounted until onDismiss, sliding out with
the view in it, so no unmount runs. The view watches its Modal host's props
(no measurement) and, from the commit that hides it, covers the band below
it for the transition hold. From the Cursor review of #88.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)

* BugseeSecure: watch the Modal a view is in, whatever carries it

The Modal host is found and its props watched on the first measurement,
hidden or not and whether or not a stack screen carries the view, so a
Modal set visible={false} while still mounted is covered for a view that
was hidden as it mounted, or sits on a stack inside the Modal. From the
Cursor review of #88.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)

* e2e secure-transitions: a looping native animation stopped part-way

The completed timing animation is synced to the shadow tree when it ends,
so it proved nothing about where native draws the view. The scenario now
stops a native-driven Animated.loop part-way and the test expects coverage
at the value it stopped at. NATIVE_SHIFT is restated in the test: the
scenario module needs React Native's types, which the e2e runner lacks.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)

* BugseeSecure: kill the remaining mutants on the transition paths

Stryker (--concurrency 3) on transition, tracker, BugseeSecure and
measureLoop left 32 survivors. New tests cover a join of moving bands, a
Modal already closing or closing again after a re-enable, a fading Modal
hidden while mounted, a view hidden as its Modal opens, a departed view
whose cover outlasts its hold, a stale deletions list, a Modal right
above the view and a screen with no host above. The branches that could
not matter are simplified, and the equivalent mutants marked with why.
All six touched files are at 100%.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)

* BugseeSecure: a stack inside a slide Modal gets the Modal's band too

The carrier was the nearest stack screen, else the Modal, so a stack
inside a slide Modal opening or closing covered only the screen's rest
rectangle, not the band the dialog slides along. Each carrier (the
nearest stack screen, the Modal) is now judged entering or leaving on its
own, and the covers of those that are are joined. From the Cursor review
of #88.

* BugseeSecure: review round 2 (native transforms, transitions, perf)

From the review of #88 at 7da9e99:
- P1-1: a native transform's bound is joined with the measured rectangle,
under both values the shadow tree may hold (rendered, or the value the
last animation ended at with C++ Animated): a mask is only widened.
- P1-2: a still native value JS cannot prove it holds (an Animated.event
may drive it) is unbounded; diffClamp, modulo and clamped interpolations
bound by their own ranges; add/subtract/multiply/divide by intervals.
- P2-1: a node missing a field this code reads is unbounded.
- P2-2: scales honour transformOrigin; one that cannot be read is unbounded.
- P2-3: per-frame measuring only while a native animation runs, a
transition carries the view, or for STEADY_FRAMES after; a still native
transform is woken the frame an animation starts (watched values, no
  measuring).
- P2-4: translations and scales compose; clippers inside a transform cut
before it moves the view, those above after.
- P2-5: a carrier's creation time is kept: a view mounted, or shown, while
its push or Modal is still running is carried in.
- P2-6: the screen uncovered or covered by a push or pop is covered too.
- P2-7: Reanimated components whose animated style sets a transform cover
the whole surface; documented in the JSDoc and README.
- P2-8: the stack cover follows stackAnimation (band, column, the view, or
the whole screen for the default and anything unknown); a view cut away
  by its ScrollView covers nothing.
- P2-9: the transition hold is 800 ms from the commit.
- P3: easing and interpolation curves that turn back are widened; ranges are
memoised per measure pass; every stack screen is a carrier (nested
stacks); the ancestry is read before the first measurement; the compat
  guard covers the new internals.

* BugseeSecure: mutation-tight tests for round 2, and an Animated perf mode

Stryker (--concurrency 3) left 159 survivors on the round-2 code; new
tests kill them, a few branches are simplified, and the equivalent ones
are marked with why. transition, nativeAnimation, tracker, measureLoop,
ancestry and BugseeSecure are at 100%.

secure-perf gains secure-perf-animated: 50 rows in an Animated.ScrollView
driving a native Animated.event, under an Animated component standing in
for react-native-screens' Animated(RNSScreen), and 2 more in a native
collapsing header; timed idle and while scrolling.

* BugseeSecure: cover the screen below a push or pop with no secure view

From the Cursor review of #88 at 287b69c:
- P1: a view on the screen below was told of a push or pop only by a
<BugseeSecure> on the moving screen. Each view now also watches its
stacks' props (a commit that pushes or pops re-renders the stack, woken
within a frame, nothing measured) and compares the stack's screens with
the last it saw: one added or removed moves its own screen too.
- P2: on iOS a card presentation (modal, formSheet, pageSheet) also scales
the screen below; there the screen below covers its whole rectangle.

The secure-perf animated mode's result regex had one space too many.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)

* e2e secure-transitions: the native-driven mask contains where the view is drawn

The mask joins where the view is drawn with where the shadow tree has it,
so it is wider than the drawn rectangle; check containment, not equality.

* Test: scope a Debug budget for the animated secure-perf modes

Release keeps 2 ms (p95 1.27-1.36 ms while scrolling). React's dev build
runs the same per-tick walk 2.5-5x slower, p95 3.4-6.4 ms; the base also
missed 2 ms in Debug there. The Debug budget for these modes is 8 ms.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)

* BugseeSecure: keep the later deadline when a second transition starts

From the Cursor review of #88 at 01a97f7: carry() set the cover's
deadline back to its own transition's every frame, so a push or pop on
the same stack, or an iOS Modal set visible={false}, while a view was
still carried in kept it covered only to the first transition's end.
carry() and watchClosing() now keep the later deadline, as screenMoved()
does.

From CodeRabbit: the Animated perf modes require frame samples too.

* BugseeSecure: review round 3 (first native animation, events, late content, replace)

From the round-2 re-review of #88 at c812b12:
- N1: Animated nodes in a transform that are not native yet are watched
every frame (their animation, value and __isNative): the first animation
with the native driver commits nothing, so a parked or ticking view is
woken by the JS frame it starts in, and covered then.
- N2: the native Animated.event attachments made through AnimatedEvent's
__attach/__detach (an Animated component's props) are followed; a value
one is attached to is unbounded while attached, animated or not. Where
AnimatedEvent cannot be loaded, a native value is trusted only while the
app listens to it. Nothing trusts a value for having been seen animating.
- N3: a screen or Modal first seen after it came, birth unknown, is taken
as coming then (once per carrier); screens seen pushed by a view on their
stack are recorded with the push's time; a tree mounted whole is not.
- N4: a screen replaced on its stack is covered by the incoming screen's
animation (the whole screen when not known); a cover set as a view
departs joins one still running, the later end kept.
- P3: add, subtract and multiply are told apart by what they compute (a
division too, without its field); a level inside one the shadow tree
scales up is unbounded; a function that comes twice takes its own place's
rendered value; Reanimated inline shared values and CSS animations and
transitions are detected; on Paper a host is keyed by its shared
instance; screensOn is memoised per measure pass.
- secure-perf-animated times 20 views in Debug under the one 2 ms budget.
- README, JSDoc and the compat guard follow.

From CodeRabbit on #88 at 8c9f42c:
- a native translation inside a host whose committed transform scales up
(a plain host, an Animated component's rendered value) is drawn moved by
more than its value: the levels inside it are unbounded, as inside a
  native level scaled up;
- the compat guard looks for an Animated component's __attach call with
the view and the prop name, not for nodes' own super.__attach().

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)

* BugseeSecure: follow attachNativeEvent, bound scroll offsets, cover pops

Round 4 of the #88 review:
- R3-1: Animated.attachNativeEvent is followed (AnimatedImplementation, which
React Native's ScrollView calls for its sticky headers, and the public
Animated object), as AnimatedEvent attachments are. A native value whose
driver is not known (made native before the package loaded, or left where
an event took it) is unbounded rather than still.
- R3-2: the following lives in secure/followEvents.ts, imported by the
package entry for its effect, so Metro's inlineRequires leaves it eager.
Patched once, its state shared through a symbol on every patched object.
- R3-3: each stack keeps its recent changes; a view first shown on the screen
a pop uncovers (mounted while hidden, or during the pop) is covered for the
rest of the hold. A stack read first is compared with its render before.
- R3-4: no time-based release. Bounded where provable: interpolations whose
ends clamp or extend flat (with their easing's span), and on Android a
  ScrollView's contentOffset within [0, max] plus a fling's overrun.
- P3: the fallback fails closed; a JS-driven value is woken when made native
rather than polled every frame; the compat guard checks the new internals.

- nativeAnimation: a scroll's reach joined attachment by attachment; the tag
cache's size cap marked as memory-only; extrapolation's default is extend.
- stacks: a popped screen leaves the stack's record; every live change is
covered from where the view is now, on every measurement in its hold.
- README, JSDoc: what is bounded, what is unbounded and for how long, and
  what is not seen.

* BugseeSecure: cover a value JS moves in the same JS task

The device run caught one leak frame in B6 under load: Animated.loop's next
iteration resets the value (a native jump back to its start) and starts it
again, and the cover followed only on the next JS frame. AnimatedValue's
animate, setValue, resetAnimation and offset methods now wake the views
over it at once (after React Native's own method ran), which measure and
publish before React Native hands the change to the UI thread. The first
native animation (N1) is covered the same way. Native-side changes (an
animation ending) are still polled every frame for native values only.

* BugseeSecure: the last round-4 mutants

An untagged host's tag is null, so looking for no tag finds none; the
remaining caching and self-healing mutants are marked with the reason. The
reach tests put their ScrollViews where a search comes first.

* BugseeSecure: mutation-tight synchronous wake

A value no one watches is moved with nothing to wake; methods React Native
lacks are not added; a view unmounting stops watching every value; the
synchronous wake only measures (the measurement decides the mode).

* BugseeSecure: round 5 (R4-1, R4-2 and the P3s)

* BugseeSecure: bound a running JS-driven transform over its path

The J1 device run (a box slid by a JS-driven timing) drew the box's leading
edge one step ahead of the frame that measured it: thin slivers in 3 of 46
frames. While a JS animation runs on a root, the transform is now bounded
over the animation's path like a native one (a spring or tracking: the
whole surface, clipped), and followed every frame; at rest, back to the
measured rectangle and the tick.

* BugseeSecure: a view inside the content its ScrollView's offset drives is unbounded

Round 5's device run of N2 found it: once R4-1 found the vertical content
container, the sticky header was bounded by its translate alone, but its
content moves by the same offset, natively ahead of the shadow tree, and
the box was drawn a box-height above the cover at the start of each scroll
(3/3 runs). A level with a value that is the offset of a ScrollView above it
is unbounded again: that ScrollView's viewport, as in round 4 (0 in 8/8).
A header outside the content (a parallax header) stays bounded.

* BugseeSecure: the driving ScrollView anywhere above the view, not only above the level

Stryker's survivor showed it: a transform around a ScrollView whose own
offset drives it moves a view in that ScrollView's content by the same
offset twice too, so it is unbounded wherever the ScrollView sits in the
view's ancestry.

* BugseeSecure: the sticky rule fails closed where the scroll is not followed (P3-A)

The final review's PROBE-STICKY-NEXT: with nothing followed, a scroll value
made native unfollowed, or a scroll whose ScrollView is not found, a sticky
header that has a next one (its interpolation flat at both ends) was bounded
by its own translate alone, N2's shape. A native root whose driver is not
known now counts as the offset of a ScrollView above the view whenever one
is there: that ScrollView's viewport, as when the scroll is followed. A
gesture attachment is no scroll: a swipeable row in a list stays bounded.
