Follow-up to #87. Stacked on fix/bugsee-secure-visible-rect.

The Android deep test (phase 1) found <BugseeSecure> boxes drawn with nothing masking them, in places #87's
measurements cannot see: native draws them after React unmounted them, or where a native animation, scroll or gesture
moved them. This PR covers those places. It masks more rather than less wherever it cannot tell exactly; what it
over-masks, and for how long, is listed under "Over-masking" below.

Leaks fixed, with device evidence

Device: a headless API 30 emulator (1080x2400), the phase-1 playground APK (Android SDK 7.4.4-SNAPSHOT) and its deep
test screens, with only the wrapper's JS switched. A leak frame is a frame of the report video with a cyan
(<BugseeSecure> box) region of 12 px or more. Green regions are the SDK's own secureTextEntry fields: the
1–2 frame slivers of a moving one are bugsee-android#274, fixed on the SDK side after this SNAPSHOT.

Leak Root cause Before This PR
W1 pop (A2) React unmounts the popped screen when the pop starts; the box was withdrawn at once while react-native-screens draws the screen sliding/scaling out for ~200–650 ms 58dc051: every pop leaks the whole box (readable), 3/3 runs, 6–7 frames each 0 frames, 3/3 (round 5); earlier rounds 30/30
C3 Modal slide (C3) The content is laid out again once the dialog is up, and the dialog window slides from below; on close, the dialog slides out after the unmount 58dc051: 2/3 runs leak on open and close 0 frames, 3/3 (round 5); earlier rounds 22/22
B6 native driver (B6) A native-driven transform never reaches the shadow tree; and Animated.loop's next iteration resets the value natively before JS's next frame 58dc051: 38–42 frames per run, 3/3 0 frames, 3/3 (round 5); round 4 8/8, 5 under heavy CPU load
N2 sticky header React Native's ScrollView pins a sticky header natively, through Animated.attachNativeEvent on its own scroll value; its content moves by the same offset, natively ahead of the shadow tree 63edb38: 2/2 runs leak in every scroll and drag phase, up to ~7,160 px a frame; bounded by its translate alone (round 5's first try): 3/3 leak at each scroll's start 0 frames, 3/3 (round 5); round 4 8/8
N1 first native slide of a clipped row The first animation with the native driver commits nothing c812b12: 0 too; this emulator does not tell them apart (the unit tests do) 0 frames, 3/3 (round 5); round 4 5/5
J1 JS-driven slide (new) A transform animated with useNativeDriver: false moves the view every frame (Fabric commits each step) with nothing JS wraps called; a step can be drawn before the frame that measures it 0be21a3: 10/55 frames (followed on the 100 ms tick); followed every frame only: thin leading-edge slivers in 5/5 runs 0 frames, 6/6
PX parallax header over a vertical Android ScrollView (new) — (over-mask) 0be21a3: masked area at rest 100% of the screen (the offset was unbounded on a vertical Android ScrollView) 0 frames, 4/4; masked area at rest and after drags 26% (a band over the header's reach)

What changed

  • Unmounting removes coverage late, like any shrink (SECURE_SHRINK_HOLD_MS, 500 ms). enabled={false} still
clears at once. Changelog note: an in-place conditional unmount now holds the last rect for 500 ms.
  • Stack push and pop (W1): read off the fiber tree in the commit (a carrier created by the commit under something that
existed before, or a deletion at or above it). Every stack screen is a carrier (nested stacks). The cover is narrowed
by stackAnimation: sideways animations cover the view's horizontal band of the screen, slide_from_bottom and the
modal-like ones the column from the view down, fade/none the view's own rect, the default and anything unknown
the whole screen. It holds for SECURE_TRANSITION_HOLD_MS (800 ms) from the commit. The screen below a push or pop
is covered too, also when the moving screen has no secure view; on iOS a card presentation covers the whole screen
below. A second push, pop or close during a hold extends it. A view cut away by its ScrollView covers nothing.
  • Each stack keeps a record of its recent pushes and pops (the screen that moved, its stackAnimation, the screen it
uncovers or covers, and when). Any view on the stack updates it as it reads the stack, hidden or not, and a view whose
screen was popped updates it as it departs. A view first shown on the screen a pop uncovers (it mounted while that
screen was hidden, or mounts during the pop) is covered for the rest of the pop's hold, from where it is now. A
stack no view has read yet is compared with its render before (its other fiber), so a pop nobody saw is still found,
    taken as happening now.
  • Replace (navigation.replace): the removed screen is animated out by the incoming screen's animation, so it is
covered by that (as the screen below a push; the whole screen when it is not known), joined with its own.
  • Content that arrives later (a screen or Modal pushed or opened with a spinner): a secure view that mounts or is
shown in a screen or Modal still within the hold from its push or opening is covered from that time. That time is
known when a <BugseeSecure> saw it come; otherwise the first one to look takes it as coming then.
  • Slide Modal (C3): the band from the view down to the bottom of the surface, on open and close, and when a Modal is
    set visible={false} while mounted (iOS).
  • Native-driven Animated (B6): where the transform can draw the view is bounded from the Animated nodes above it
by interval arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply told apart by what they compute; diffClamp, modulo, interpolations,
running timing animations and their easing, padded where a curve turns back); translate and scale compose about
transformOrigin; clippers inside the transform cut before it moves the view, those above after; a level inside a
scale up (another level's, or any host's committed transform) is unbounded. The bound is joined with the measured
rect under both values the shadow tree may hold (C++ Native Animated), so it only widens.
  • What drives a native value is followed (secure/drivers.ts), from the package entry's first evaluation (with
Metro's inlineRequires, its first use: the README recommends importing it, or calling Bugsee.launch, at the top
of index.js): secure/followEvents.ts is imported by the entry for its effect, so inlineRequires cannot defer it
further, to the first <BugseeSecure>. It requires React Native's four Animated modules by literal path, each in a
try block: Metro then takes them as optional dependencies (allowOptionalDependencies, on by default in React
Native's and Expo's Metro configs), so a file a future React Native moved still bundles, as a require that throws
at startup and is caught: nothing is followed, and every still native value is masked as moving. Checked with a
real Metro bundle; check-rn-compat.sh checks the four files on every supported version first. Patched once, the
state shared through a non-enumerable symbol on each patched object (Fast Refresh, two copies of the package):
    • native events attached through AnimatedEvent.__attach/__detach (an Animated component's onScroll, a gesture
handler's onGestureEvent) and through Animated.attachNativeEvent (on AnimatedImplementation, which React
      Native's ScrollView calls for stickyHeaderIndices, and on the public Animated object), until detached;
    • values being made native (AnimatedValue.__makeNative), and JS moving them (animate, setValue,
      resetAnimation, the offset methods).
A value an event is attached to is wherever the event takes it, idle or not; the views over it are woken again once
the attachment is counted. A native value whose driver is not known (made native before the package was evaluated,
or left wherever its last event took it, whatever JS set while it was attached, and not animated or set since) is
unbounded. Where React Native's internals cannot be followed, no still native value is trusted (the
      check-rn-compat.sh guard fails first).
  • Provable bounds for event-driven values (no time-based release anywhere): an interpolation whose ends both clamp
    or extend a flat last segment is within its outputs (each segment as far as its easing reaches), whatever its input;
diffClamp within its bounds; and, on Android, a ScrollView's contentOffset (vertical or horizontal) within
[0, max(0, content − viewport)] from the ScrollView's measured content and viewport, plus 64 dp either way for a
fling's overrun (AOSP's overfling distance is 6 dp, which JS cannot read: the margin assumes no device flings more
than ten times that), carried through the interpolation chain. The ScrollView is found from the attachment (its host
for attachNativeEvent, its tag for an Animated.ScrollView, looked up once in the view's tree); its content
container's host through up to four components (Android renders a vertical ScrollView's content through the View
component). Not bounded: a ScrollView under a committed scale other than 1 or -1 (its offsets are not in window
units), and a view inside the content of the ScrollView whose offset drives it (a sticky header, or a transform
around a ScrollView driven by its own offset): that content moves by the same offset too, natively ahead of the
shadow tree. Failing closed, a native value whose driver is not known (nothing followed, made native unfollowed, or
a scroll whose ScrollView is not found) is taken as such an offset whenever a ScrollView is above the view.
  • A value JS moves is covered in that same JS task (B6, N1): starting an animation on it (the first with the native
driver included, which commits nothing), setting, resetting or offsetting it wakes every view over it, which measures
and publishes at once, before React Native hands the change to the UI thread. What native does to a still native
value on its own (an animation ending) is seen by the next JS frame; native values are polled every frame for that.
  • A transform animated from JS (useNativeDriver: false; J1): it moves the view every frame through Fabric with
nothing JS wraps called, and a step can be drawn before the frame that measures it. While an animation runs on a
root (_animation or _tracking), the transform is bounded over the animation's path like a native one (a spring
or tracking: the whole surface, clipped) and the view is re-measured every frame; at rest it is measured as it is,
and back on the tick with no frame loop. Other styles a JS animation moves (top, left, a size) are followed by
the 100 ms re-measure only, as before this PR.
  • BugseeSecure: publish only the visible part, withdraw while hidden #87's clip watch on Android: a parked (clipped, still) view under a vertical Android ScrollView watched the
ScrollView's host only, not its content (the View component's host, a level further down), so it was woken by the
tick, not the frame its content scrolled. The content container's host is found the same way as above.
  • What else cannot be bounded (a missing or renamed field, an unreadable origin, a rotation, a spring) covers the whole
surface, clipped. Per-frame measuring only while an animation runs, during a transition, or for a few frames after.
  • Reanimated: an animated style that sets a transform, a shared value set inline, or a CSS animation or transition
covers the whole surface (clipped); no dependency. Not seen: an animated style that adds a transform only later,
layout animations, entering/exiting, shared element transitions.
  • Documented in the component's JSDoc and the README's "Hiding a view from recordings" section.

Over-masking: what and when

Around transitions, for SECURE_TRANSITION_HOLD_MS (800 ms) from the commit:

  • the band, column or whole screen above, on the pushed or popped screen and the one below it;
  • once per change no <BugseeSecure> saw (a screen or Modal first seen, a stack first read, a view re-enabled after a
push), the same cover taken as starting then: up to 800 ms where no transition runs.

While a JS-driven animation runs on a transform above the view: the animation's whole path (a spring or tracking: the
whole surface, clipped).

Sustained, for as long as the condition lasts, idle included:

  • a native event attached to a value above the view, through an interpolation that extends at a sloped end (a gesture
translation, a parallax over a scroll it cannot bound): the whole surface, cut by the clipping ancestors above (a
    list's viewport, or the whole screen for a header positioned over the list);
  • on iOS, any ScrollView contentOffset: unbounded, so the same (it bounces past its ends, and scrollTo goes
    anywhere);
  • on Android, a header moved by an unclamped scroll interpolation, outside the ScrollView: over the offsets the
ScrollView can reach (PX on device: 26% of the screen at rest, against 100% before this round); a sticky header
(stickyHeaderIndices, sticky SectionList headers), or a transform around a ScrollView driven by its own offset:
    the ScrollView's whole viewport (the whole surface, for the latter);
  • a swipeable row without overshoot, a clamped or diffClamp header: over its output range;
  • a native value made native before the package was first evaluated: the whole surface (clipped) until it next animates or is
    set;
  • a native rotation, skew, spring or decay above the view, or a level inside a host scaled above 1: the whole surface
    (clipped) while it lasts;
  • a Reanimated component whose style can move the view: the whole surface (clipped).

Not fixed here (analysed in the report)

  • A1 (HONOR tab entry): not a late publish. Not reproducible on API 30.
  • A4 (rotation, multi-window): the new layout is mounted on the UI thread before JS learns of it. A fix would be native.
  • Interactive back gestures (iOS swipe-back, Android predictive back): no JS-visible signal.
  • The cover published as JS starts a native animation and the animation itself reach native separately: under heavy
load the first frame could still win (not seen in 5 B6 runs under load).
  • Native events attached without Animated (code calling React Native's native Animated module itself): not seen; the
value is taken where JS last had it. Events attached before the package is first imported: their values are unknown,
so unbounded until they next animate.
  • A sticky header's cover could be tightened by bounding its translate and its content's scroll together (both come
from the same offset: from the viewport's top to where it rests); it is the whole viewport instead.
  • A JS-driven Animated.event (useNativeDriver: false) calls setValue on every event: one synchronous measure and
publish per event per view over it (two for a ValueXY). Not coalesced.
  • The ScrollView-by-tag cache holds up to 32 fibers strongly (React detaches deleted fibers, so little is retained).
  • A JS-driven value that is tracking (_tracking, at rest included) covers the whole surface, clipped, for as long as
    it tracks (over-mask only).
  • If Libraries/Animated/Animated.js alone failed to load, the public Animated.attachNativeEvent would stay unwrapped
(the compat guard checks the file); with nothing followed, a JS animate is seen by the frame poll a step late.
  • The new per-measure walks (the ScrollView set and the scale walk up the tree) are not memoized per pass.
  • contentOf takes the first child chain, which on iOS with refreshControl is the refresh control (unreachable while
    iOS offsets are unbounded).
  • The Reanimated motion listed above.
  • iOS paths are unit-tested only: the Modal visible={false} watch, RNSModalScreen dismissal, the iOS card
neighbour and replace, the 800 ms hold on iOS, and the unbounded iOS scroll offset have not run on a device or
    simulator.
  • No secure-perf mode inside an RNSScreenStack (the bare app has no react-native-screens); each view on a stack keeps
a props watch on it, so the frame loop runs while one is mounted. A Pending level with no root values to watch (a
node of a kind not known) keeps its view measured every frame.

Perf (secure-perf, API 30 emulator; p50/p95/max ms)

Round 5 against 0be21a3, on my own API 30 emulator (headless), both builds of the bare app. animated* is
secure-perf-animated: rows in an Animated.ScrollView with a native Animated.event, under an Animated component
standing in for react-native-screens, and 2 in a diffClamp header; idle and scrolling. 52 views in Release; 20 in Debug,
under the one 2 ms p95 budget in both builds. Release excludes the first run after each install (ART compiles the app
then); those runs pass too.

  • Stryker (--concurrency 3) on ancestry, drivers, nativeAnimation this round (and transition, tracker in
round 4): 100%; equivalent mutants are marked with the reason (followEvents.ts is a require block, all marked).
  • e2e (bare Debug, emulator): secure-transitions 3/3, secure-visible 6/6, secure-perf 25/25 in every run of this
    round's code, both builds.
  • check-rn-compat.sh guard (6) also checks the four Animated files followEvents.ts requires, and that a vertical
ScrollView's content is still the View component on Android; 0.81, 0.84 and 0.87 locally, 0.81–0.87 in CI.
  • Root yarn lint, yarn typecheck, yarn test (4343 passed) pass.

Deep review (4c46e36, stacked on #87)

This is the right follow-up to the Android phase-1 leaks: unmount now holds like any other shrink, stack/Modal travel is inferred from the fiber tree, and native-driven Animated timing/interpolation is bounded from the node graph. The depart vs stop split, enabled={false} still clearing at once, fail-closed WHOLE_SURFACE for springs/rotations, and the deletions / Animated-field compat guard are all sound. I did not run Jest here (no node_modules in the workspace).

The remaining holes are still privacy leaks of <BugseeSecure> pixels, not style. Two of them are on paths this PR newly introduced (parked vs nativeMotion, first-measure latch) and two are cases the fiber-commit detector cannot see (interactive stack gestures, cold-start treated as a push).

P1 — parked views never re-read native-driven motion

Location: packages/react-native/src/secure/tracker.ts (next / parked onFrame / checkParked)

Problem: nativeMotion runs only inside a full measure(). After STEADY_FRAMES a clipped view parks. Parked wake-ups are shadow-tree measureInWindow on the view and its clippers — the same measurements this PR correctly says native driver never updates. this.animating is therefore stuck at the last full measure (usually false), so a native animation that starts (or changes) while parked never promotes the view back to active.

Impact: The mask stays at the last clipped rest rect while native draws the field somewhere else. That is B6 again, on the common “secure field inside a ScrollView” tree.

Scenario: A PIN field is partly visibile in a ScrollView (parked). An ancestor Animated.View then timings translateY with useNativeDriver: true (keyboard avoid, collapsing header, carousel). Shadow-tree size is unchanged, so checkParked and watchNode do nothing. The newly exposed digits are recorded unmasked for the whole animation and after it stops.

Fix: Do not park while ancestry.animated.length > 0, or from the parked tick/frame cheaply re-run nativeMotion (JS node values only) and enter('active') if running or the bounded rect moved. Add a transitions test that parks first, then starts a native timing.

P1 — stack transitions while the screen is still mounted

Location: packages/react-native/src/secure/tracker.ts (measured / depart); packages/react-native/src/secure/transition.ts (carrierLeaving)

Problem: W1 only fires on the commit that creates or deletes the carrier. nativeMotion only reads Animated(...) style.transform. react-native-screens slides RNSScreen with a native view transform that never appears in either place, for as long as the screen stays in the tree.

Impact: The original W1 leak (readable box while the screen is sliding) still happens on every interactive back gesture, and on any stack animation that does not unmount at t=0.

Scenario: iOS native-stack swipe-back (and Android predictive back, if the route is not removed until the gesture commits). The screen stays mounted for the whole drag; measureInWindow stays at the rest layout; the PIN slides with the UIView. If the user cancels, depart() never runs. Programmatic Android pop-unmount-at-start is what the new tests cover; this path is not.

Fix: While a stack screen is on screen, also cover carriedCover(..., screen) whenever that screen is in a native transition — e.g. activityState is an Animated node (you already detect this in animatedActivity and then do nothing with it), a screens transition callback, or “not yet STEADY_FRAMES after a screen whose window rect and Fabric rect disagree.” Treat cancel the same as a shrink hold, not as “nothing happened.”

P2 — the initial stack route is treated as a push

Location: packages/react-native/src/secure/transition.ts carrierEntering

Problem: alternate == null on the screen/Modal host is true for every first commit of that host, including the first route of the app. Nothing asks whether the stack already existed.

Impact: Every <BugseeSecure> on the initial route publishes the whole screen (and native drops taps on it) for SECURE_TRANSITION_HOLD_MS (1s) on cold start. That is not the “~600 ms around a transition” trade-off; there is no transition.

Scenario: Login screen with a password field wrapped in <BugseeSecure>, first mount of RNSScreenStack + RNSScreen. Matches the test that uses onStackScreen() without existing().

Fix: Count as entering only when the carrier has no alternate and some fiber above it (the stack / the opener) already has one. Keep a regression test for “first screen of a new stack covers only the view.”

P2 — C3 band is latched from the first measureInWindow, including 0×0

Location: packages/react-native/src/secure/tracker.ts arrive; packages/react-native/src/secure/transition.ts carriedCover

Problem: arriving is cleared on the first finite callback, including {0,0,0,0}. Clip ancestors already treat 0/0/0/0 as “not found”; the view does not. settling re-measures the rest rect every frame but never rebuilds this.cover. A slide band of width 0 covers nothing.

Impact: The Modal slide-in leak this PR is meant to close (C3) returns if the first Fabric answer for a newly presented surface is empty. Later onLayout cannot recover the band.

Scenario: <Modal animationType="slide"> becomes visible; useLayoutEffect measureInWindow returns 0×0 before the dialog surface has a layout; arrive stores {x:0,y:0,width:0,height:…}; the real rect arrives on the next frame. Native is still drawing the content below the rest position with nothing masking the path.

Fix: Keep arriving (and skip latching) until width/height are > 0. While settling, recompute carriedCover from the latest self and union it with the previous band. Mirror the clip-ancestor 0×0 meaning for the view’s first sample.

  1. Overall risk: High (secure pixels still recorded on parked native motion and on interactive stack gestures; launch over-mask is a behavior regression).
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes.
  3. Most important to fix: parked × nativeMotion; still-mounted stack transitions. Then the initial-route false push and the 0×0 C3 latch.
  4. Positives: Unmount vs disable is the correct split; host numeric snapshot vs wrapper Animated nodes matches RN useAnimatedProps (__getValueWithStaticProps); clipToAncestors(..., above) correctly ignores clips that travel with the transform; tests actually fail on 58dc051 for the cases they name.

Device evidence / the perf table called out in the PR body are still missing; the new e2e (secure-transitions) is the right shape once the holes above are closed.

P1: This is the only still-mounted motion path, and it only sees Animated(...) style.transform.

react-native-screens slides RNSScreen with a native view transform that is not an Animated node and is not a deletion. W1 (depart / carrierLeaving) only runs on the unmount commit. For the whole time the screen stays mounted and is being dragged, measureInWindow stays at the rest layout and nativeMotion returns null.

Concrete: iOS native-stack swipe-back (and a cancelled swipe). The route is not removed until the gesture commits, so depart() never runs during the drag; a <BugseeSecure> on that screen is drawn tens of percent to the side of its mask. The new tests only exercise deleting(screen) + unmount(), i.e. programmatic pop-unmount-at-start.

Cover carriedCover(..., screen) while that stack screen is in a native transition (you already detect an Animated activityState in animatedActivity and then leave the rect at rest). Cancelled gestures need the shrink hold, not “nothing happened.”

Valid, and not fixed in this PR. An interactive swipe-back (iOS native-stack, Android predictive back) moves the still-mounted screen natively with nothing in the committed tree or in an Animated node that JS can read; react-native-screens reports it only through events on the stack (onTransitionProgress, gesture callbacks) that the app's navigator owns. The activityState path covers JS-driven containers only. Covering the screen whenever a stack screen might be dragged would mask every stack screen permanently. This PR's device scope is Android programmatic push/pop, Modal and native-driven Animated; the gesture case is listed as a known limit in the PR description and the report, for a follow-up (likely a native-side hook in the wrapper bridges). From the Cursor review of #88:
- A view under any Animated component is re-measured every frame, never
parked: a native animation that starts later moves nothing JS sees.
- A carrier mounted with the whole tree (an app starting) is not a
transition: something above it must have been there before.
- A view carried in but not laid out yet (0x0) covers nothing from there;
while it settles, the cover follows where it rests, joined with where it
  rested before.

Deep review (0516099, stacked on #87)

0516099 closes the three first-round holes that were fixable from the fiber tree and the Animated node graph. A view under any Animated(...) component stays on the per-frame loop (parked × B6); carrierEntering now requires an ancestor that already existed (cold start is not a push); the C3 band is built only from a laid-out rect and is unioned while the hold lasts. lint, typecheck, unit is green on this HEAD. I did not re-run Jest here.

The remaining leaks are still unmasked <BugseeSecure> pixels, both on still-mounted native transitions. The stack swipe case is unchanged (accepted). The new one is C3 close on iOS: RN keeps the host mounted until onDismiss, and this PR only arms the slide band from depart().

Prior findings

  • P1 parked × nativeMotion — fixed. this.animating = above.animated.length > 0 never parks; the new clipped-then-start-native test fails on the previous head.
  • P1 still-mounted stack transition — not fixed. Author's note is right for native-stack: @react-navigation/native-stack sets activityState to 0 or 2 only, and the swipe transform is not an Animated node. Still a leak on every iOS interactive pop (and a cancelled one). Native-side hook remains the follow-up.
  • P2 initial-route false push — fixed. Controls added for a stack/Modal mounted with the tree.
  • P2 0×0 C3 latch — fixed. Empty self covers nothing; later rest positions join the band.

P1 — iOS Modal slide-out never hits depart()

Location: packages/react-native/src/secure/tracker.ts (depart / arrive / carry); packages/react-native/src/secure/transition.ts (carrierLeaving)

Problem: C3 close is wired only to the unmount commit (depart → carrierLeaving → deletions). That matches Android. It does not match iOS. From RN 0.81 through 0.87 (peer range), Modal._shouldShowModal is:

  • Android: visible === true — host is deleted as soon as visible flips, so depart() runs at the start of the slide-out.
  • iOS: visible === true || isRendered === true — isRendered stays true until onDismiss / modalDismissed. The host and its children stay mounted for the whole dismiss animation.

While that happens, arriving is already false, this.carried was cleared after the open hold, and measureInWindow stays at the rest rect. Native draws the dialog sliding down with nothing on the band.

This is not the accepted “nothing in the committed tree” limit. visible is a codegen prop on RCTModalHostView (the same host carriedCover already reads animationType from). On iOS close it becomes false in the commit that starts the animation.

Impact: The C3 close leak this PR claims to close is still open on iOS, including swipe-to-dismiss (allowSwipeDismissal) until onRequestClose flips visible. The e2e (secure-transitions) is Android-only and so cannot catch it. After onDismiss finally unmounts, depart() publishes a 600 ms band on an already-gone surface (over-mask, not a cover of the slide).

Scenario: Login sheet, <Modal visible={show} animationType="slide"> wrapping a PIN <BugseeSecure>, iOS. setShow(false) or a swipe-down dismiss. For the ~300 ms slide the digits are recorded below the rest mask. The unit test “covers the band it slides out along as it closes” only deleting(RCTModalHostView) + unmount() — the Android path.

Fix: In the mounted measure path (not only depart), if the carrier is a Modal and the current host props have visible === false (read ancestry.resolved, not the stored path fiber), arm the same carriedCover band and keep the view on frames until the hold ends. Add a transitions test that flips visible to false on a still-mounted host. allowSwipeDismissal while visible is still true stays in the same bucket as the stack swipe (native transform, no committed signal) and can stay a listed limit.

  1. Overall risk: High (iOS C3 close is a stated leak on a first-class platform; iOS swipe-back still open).
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes.
  3. Most important to fix: iOS Modal visible === false while still mounted. The stack-gesture residual needs a native hook and can stay listed.
  4. Positives: 0516099 is the right shape for the first-round issues; fail-closed WHOLE_SURFACE for springs/rotations; Android {visible && …} / visible={false} unmount-at-start is covered; 600 ms hold vs the 1 s black screen is the correct trade-off once the screen rect can be measured.

Device evidence / the perf table in the PR body are still missing. The Android e2e shape is right once the iOS close path has a unit test that does not unmount the host.

On iOS a <Modal> keeps its host mounted until onDismiss, sliding out with
the view in it, so no unmount runs. The view watches its Modal host's props
(no measurement) and, from the commit that hides it, covers the band below
it for the transition hold. From the Cursor review of #88.

Deep review (9a34f54, stacked on #87)

9a34f54 closes the iOS C3 close hole for the tree the PR actually tests: a <Modal animationType="slide"> that wraps the field. The host is watched props-only (no measureInWindow on RCTModalHostView), visible === false on the resolved fiber arms the same slide band as depart(), once per close. lint, typecheck, unit is green on this HEAD, as is check-rn-compat on 0.81–0.87. I did not run Jest locally.

The remaining leak is still unmasked <BugseeSecure> pixels, on the iOS close path this commit just added, when this.carrier is never a Modal.

Prior findings

  • P1 parked × nativeMotion — fixed.
  • P1 still-mounted stack transition — not fixed. Author accepted; native-side hook remains the follow-up (iOS swipe-back / cancelled gesture).
  • P2 initial-route false push — fixed.
  • P2 0×0 C3 latch — fixed.
  • P1 iOS Modal visible={false} while mounted — fixed for a Modal that wraps the view. New test mutates the still-mounted host and expects the band within a frame; it fails on 0516099. Android {visible && …} / unmount-at-start is still the depart() path.

P2 — iOS close watch never attaches unless the first visible measure latched a Modal carrier

Location: packages/react-native/src/secure/tracker.ts (measure hidden branch / measured / arrive); packages/react-native/src/secure/transition.ts carrierOf

Problem: watchClosing runs only when this.carrier?.kind === 'modal'. this.carrier is set solely in arrive(), and arrive() runs only on the first measurement that is not isHidden. Two committed trees therefore never watch RCTModalHostView.visible, even though that prop is the signal 9a34f54 added:

  1. First measure under an inactive screens screen (activityState 0) sets arriving = false and returns. Later, when the screen is focused, arriving is already false, so carrier stays null.
  2. carrierOf returns the nearest RNSScreen in an RNSScreenStack before it looks for a Modal. A native-stack inside <Modal> latches kind: 'screen'. Push/pop of that stack is W1; iOS Modal close is not.

visible === false is still a committed prop on the same host carriedCover already reads animationType from. The new test only uses inModal() wrapping a view, with every ancestor existing(), so neither tree is covered.

Impact: The C3 close leak this commit claims to close is still open for those trees. The e2e is Android-only.

Scenario: <Modal visible={show} animationType="slide"> with a PIN <BugseeSecure> on (a) a bottom-tab / stack screen mounted lazy={false} (first measure hidden, then the user focuses that tab and closes), or (b) a screen of a native-stack hosted inside the Modal. setShow(false) on iOS. Host stays mounted until onDismiss; no deletion, so depart() does not run during the slide. No props watch. Digits are recorded below the rest mask for ~300 ms.

Fix: Watch the Modal host whenever one is in ancestry.path (or resolved), independent of carrierOf / arrive(). Latch that host even on the hidden path; only skip the entering cover while isHidden. carrierOf staying screen-first is correct for W1. Add a transitions test that hides on mount (activityState 0), then focuses, then sets visible={false} without unmounting; and one with RNSScreenStack inside RCTModalHostView.

  1. Overall risk: Medium (simple iOS C3 close is fixed; composed trees still leak; iOS swipe-back still open).
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes.
  3. Most important to fix: Attach the iOS visible === false watch from the Modal host itself, not from a carrier latched on the first visible measure. The stack-gesture residual can stay listed.
  4. Positives: 9a34f54 is the right shape for the host that stays mounted; props-only watchNode does not measure RCTModalHostView; closing is once-per-close; fail-closed WHOLE_SURFACE for springs/rotations; Android unmount-at-start and the 600 ms hold vs a 1 s black screen remain the correct trade-off.

Device evidence / the perf table in the PR body are still missing. allowSwipeDismissal while visible is still true stays in the same bucket as stack swipe.

The Modal host is found and its props watched on the first measurement,
hidden or not and whether or not a stack screen carries the view, so a
Modal set visible={false} while still mounted is covered for a view that
was hidden as it mounted, or sits on a stack inside the Modal. From the

Deep review (b3f1874, stacked on #87)

b3f1874 closes the previous P2: the Modal host is found with modalOf and its props watched on the first measurement, hidden or not, independently of carrierOf. The two new close tests (hidden-at-mount, RNSScreenStack inside the Modal) fail on 9a34f54 as claimed. lint, typecheck, unit is green on this HEAD, as is check-rn-compat on 0.81–0.87. I did not run Jest locally.

The remaining leak is still unmasked <BugseeSecure> pixels, on the C3 slide this PR exists to cover, when a native-stack is inside the Modal. iOS close of that tree is the new watchClosing path and is covered. Open (both platforms) and Android close still go through carrierOf, which prefers the screen.

Prior findings

  • P1 parked × nativeMotion — fixed.
  • P1 still-mounted stack transition — not fixed. Author accepted; native-side hook remains the follow-up (iOS swipe-back / cancelled gesture).
  • P2 initial-route false push — fixed.
  • P2 0×0 C3 latch — fixed.
  • P1 iOS Modal visible={false} while mounted — fixed for a wrapping Modal, and now also for hidden-at-mount and stack-inside-Modal close.
  • P2 close watch gated on a carrier latched at the first visible measure — fixed.

P2 — arrive/depart still cover a stack screen, not the Modal slide, when both are in the tree

Location: packages/react-native/src/secure/tracker.ts arrive / depart; packages/react-native/src/secure/transition.ts carrierOf

Problem: watchClosing now uses this.modal from modalOf. arrive() and depart() still take a single carrierOf() result. carrierOf returns the nearest RNSScreen in an RNSScreenStack before it looks for RCTModalHostView. A native-stack hosted in a slide Modal therefore latches kind: 'screen' and carriedCover of that screen’s rest rectangle (in tests, 0,0,400,800), not the C3 band from the view’s top to the bottom of the surface.

C3’s leak is pixels below the rest layout while the dialog slides. The screen rect is the rest layout. carrierEntering is still true on open: the screen has no alternate, and the opener above the Modal does.

The new stack-inside-Modal test wraps the whole tree in existing(), so arrive() does not run as a transition; it only flips visible on a still-mounted host. The e2e Modal has no stack. Android close of that tree is deleting(host) + unmount() — depart() + carrierOf, never watchClosing.

Impact: The C3 leak this PR claims to close is still open for a native-stack inside <Modal animationType="slide"> on every open, and on Android close. That tree is a typical login/PIN sheet (<Modal> + @react-navigation/native-stack). iOS close of the same tree is now covered.

Scenario: <Modal visible={show} animationType="slide"><NativeStack><Screen> with a PIN <BugseeSecure>. Open the Modal: the dialog slides up from below the rest layout for ~300 ms; published cover is the screen rect, not the band; digits (OTP prefill, returning user) are recorded below the mask. Android setShow(false) unmounts the host at the start of the close animation: depart() covers the screen rect again, same hole. A JS stack / RNSScreenContainer inside the Modal still gets kind: 'modal' and is fine — only RNSScreenStack trips this.

Fix: In arrive() and depart(), evaluate the screen carrier (if any) and modalOf independently. Apply carriedCover for each that is entering/leaving, bounding() the results. Keep carrierOf screen-first for W1 when the Modal is not the thing transitioning (push/pop inside an already-open Modal). Controls: Modal+stack open (existingFrom only above the Modal) expects the band; deleting(RCTModalHostView) + unmount() of that tree expects the band; a push inside an already-open Modal still expects only the screen rect.

  1. Overall risk: Medium (simple C3 and iOS close of composed trees are fixed; open/Android-close of a stack inside the Modal still leak; iOS swipe-back still open).
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes.
  3. Most important to fix: Apply the Modal slide band from arrive/depart when the Modal itself is entering or leaving, even if a stack screen is the nearest carrierOf. The stack-gesture residual can stay listed.
  4. Positives: b3f1874 is the right shape for the close watch (props-only, independent of carrierOf, including hidden-at-mount); fail-closed WHOLE_SURFACE for springs/rotations; Android unmount-at-start of a wrapping Modal and the 600 ms hold vs a 1 s black screen remain the correct trade-off.

3d1de2e is e2e-only: a completed native timing is synced into the shadow tree, so the old assertion could not prove B6. Deep review (88f4500, stacked on #87)

88f4500 is mutant-killing on the transition paths: new tests for joining bands, a Modal already closing / re-enabled while closing, a fade host hidden while mounted, a hidden view as a Modal opens, a departed cover that outlasts the shrink hold, a stale deletions list, and two carrierOf edges. The source simplifications (modalOf type-only, deletionRoot dropping the empty-self arm, Number(deletionRoot()) >= index, watchModal no longer warning on a torn path) are equivalent on the trees this PR can build. I did not find a regression in those changes. I did not run Jest here (no node_modules). Playground typecheck, lint, tests is green on this HEAD; ci and the playground device builds were still queued/pending at review.

The carrier was the nearest stack screen, else the Modal, so a stack
inside a slide Modal opening or closing covered only the screen's rest
rectangle, not the band the dialog slides along. Each carrier (the
nearest stack screen, the Modal) is now judged entering or leaving on its
own, and the covers of those that are are joined. From the Cursor review
of #88.

Deep review (7da9e99, stacked on #87)

7da9e99 closes the last blocking finding: carriersOf now returns the nearest stack screen and the RCTModalHostView independently, and arrive / depart / carry keep whichever of those is actually entering or leaving, joining their covers with carriedCovers / bounding. A native-stack inside a slide Modal therefore publishes the screen rectangle and the C3 band (open: alternates stripped only from the host down; Android close: deleting the Modal host). A push or pop inside an already-open Modal still filters to the screen only, because the Modal fiber already has an alternate. hosts still stop at the Modal boundary, so a Modal opened from a stack does not pick the outer screen.

watchClosing was already using modalOf (b3f1874); iOS visible={false} on a still-mounted host of this tree stays on the band. The new open/close tests fail the way the previous review described on 88f4500.

Prior findings

Finding State
P1 parked × nativeMotion fully_addressed
P1 still-mounted stack gesture (iOS swipe-back / Android predictive back) not_addressed (accepted; listed under “Not fixed here”)
P2 initial route treated as a push fully_addressed
P2 0×0 C3 latch fully_addressed
P1 iOS Modal visible={false} while mounted fully_addressed
P2 close watch gated on a screen-first carrier fully_addressed
P2 arrive/depart screen-first carrierOf (stack inside a slide Modal) fully_addressed in 7da9e99

No remaining P0–P3 that should block merge.

Residuals (accepted / out of this PR)

  • Interactive back gestures still have no JS-visible signal; a native-side hook remains the follow-up.
  • e2e secure-transitions Modal still has no stack; the nested tree is unit-tested.
  • Device leak table covers through 0516099; later commits (iOS props watch, mutant-killing, this join) are unit-tested.

CI at review: lint, typecheck, unit SUCCESS; pack/compat/ios/android jobs SUCCESS; mutation (src) still running. Did not run Jest locally (no node_modules in this environment).

1. Overall risk: Low

The unique remaining hole is the accepted gesture case. Nested Modal+stack open/close, the previous C3/W1/B6 paths, and fail-closed unmeasurable-screen behaviour look correct.

2. Merge recommendation: approve

Land after #87. Mutation shards can finish in the background; unit already passed on this HEAD.

3. Most important issues to fix

None blocking. Residual: still-mounted native-stack swipe-back / predictive back (native follow-up).

4. Positive observations

Independent carriers + carrierEntering / carrierLeaving filters are the right shape for “slides in with the Modal, pushes within it on its own.” Moving bounding next to carriedCovers and taking both bottoms is what makes the screen rect and the slide band join correctly. The new tests pin both the nested open (opener already existed) and the Android unmount close.

From the review of #88 at 7da9e99:
- P1-1: a native transform's bound is joined with the measured rectangle,
under both values the shadow tree may hold (rendered, or the value the
last animation ended at with C++ Animated): a mask is only widened.
- P1-2: a still native value JS cannot prove it holds (an Animated.event
may drive it) is unbounded; diffClamp, modulo and clamped interpolations
bound by their own ranges; add/subtract/multiply/divide by intervals.
- P2-1: a node missing a field this code reads is unbounded.
- P2-2: scales honour transformOrigin; one that cannot be read is unbounded.
- P2-3: per-frame measuring only while a native animation runs, a
transition carries the view, or for STEADY_FRAMES after; a still native
transform is woken the frame an animation starts (watched values, no
  measuring).
- P2-4: translations and scales compose; clippers inside a transform cut
before it moves the view, those above after.
- P2-5: a carrier's creation time is kept: a view mounted, or shown, while
its push or Modal is still running is carried in.
- P2-6: the screen uncovered or covered by a push or pop is covered too.
- P2-7: Reanimated components whose animated style sets a transform cover
the whole surface; documented in the JSDoc and README.
- P2-8: the stack cover follows stackAnimation (band, column, the view, or
the whole screen for the default and anything unknown); a view cut away
  by its ScrollView covers nothing.
- P2-9: the transition hold is 800 ms from the commit.
- P3: easing and interpolation curves that turn back are widened; ranges are
memoised per measure pass; every stack screen is a carrier (nested
stacks); the ancestry is read before the first measurement; the compat
  guard covers the new internals.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Secure views now maintain masking during screen and modal transitions, including native-driven animations, and retain coverage briefly after unmounting.
    • Added examples for checking secure-view performance while idle and scrolling, and verifying coverage during transitions.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded guidance on masking behavior, transition and animation coverage, and known limitations.

Secure-view tracking now accounts for screen and modal transitions, native-driven transforms, and delayed coverage after unmount. The changes add measurement and coverage logic, tests, React Native compatibility checks, documentation, and end-to-end scenarios.

Changes

Layer Summary
Ancestry and frame observation Ancestry records host and Animated-component paths. Scroll-content lookup searches through component wrappers. The frame loop supports props-only node watches and watches animated values for changes.
Native transform bounds Native-animation utilities derive value and transform bounds, then calculate drawn and visible rectangles with ancestor clipping. Driver tracking follows native events and value changes, and package loading initializes event tracking.
Transition carrier coverage Transition utilities identify screen and modal carriers, classify stack motion, calculate coverage rectangles, and track held stack changes.
Tracker lifecycle and coverage integration SecureTracker integrates transition and native-motion coverage. Unmounts retain coverage temporarily; disabling stops tracking immediately. Tests and documentation describe lifecycle timing, transitions, transforms, and coverage updates.
Transition and performance scenarios Scenarios and end-to-end tests exercise transition coverage and animated-view performance. The performance test checks view counts, tick counts, and p95 timing thresholds.
React Native compatibility checks The compatibility script checks React Native internals used by transition and animation tracking.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f5ef0

On tall Debug devices, the animated scrolling performance check may pass without scrolling. This is a bounded coverage gap, not a demonstrated masking failure.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f5ef0

The design broadens protection for sensitive views while preserving immediate explicit disable and independent mask ownership. No introduced or worsened security defect was established. Protection still depends on native timing and supported animation behavior, so the changes do not establish a universal no-leak guarantee.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The security-relevant outcome is disclosure of wrapped application content in recordings if masking lags or misses native drawing. Conservative fallback can instead mask the surrounding surface. The observed exposure is within applications using this component, not a newly introduced service or tenant-access boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Each component has a distinct object owner token. Registry publication combines independent owners, and clearing one owner preserves the others. The lifecycle expansion therefore retains the existing separation between concurrent secure views and manually supplied rectangles.
  • observed — Observed event attachments take precedence over a value's last JavaScript position. Unknown driver state produces unbounded motion rather than trusting stale coordinates. This control depends on observing supported Animated APIs; direct native-module event attachment is explicitly outside that observation boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Unreadable native-motion levels fall back conservatively, and non-finite measurements leave prior coverage published. These failure controls do not establish atomicity between native drawing and mask installation; the documented first-frame race remains a limitation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If a strict no-first-frame-disclosure guarantee is required, consider native-side ordering or acknowledgement that installs coverage before motion begins and releases transition coverage after completion. This is stronger protection than the current best-effort timing model, not an observed regression.

Deep review (287b69c, stacked on #87)

287b69c is round 2 plus the mutation-tight tests: stackAnimation-shaped covers, neighbour-screen notification, interval-arithmetic native transforms (diffClamp / interpolations / transformOrigin), per-frame measure only while a timing runs (watchValue wake), Reanimated fail-closed, hold 800 ms. First-round parked × B6 is still closed, cheaper; the 7da9e99 carriersOf join is intact. I did not run Jest (no node_modules). CI on this HEAD was still pending at review (compat jobs green; lint, typecheck, unit not yet).

Round 2's new neighbour cover (P2-6) only fires if a <BugseeSecure> on the moving screen calls tellStacks. The common case — credentials on the screen being covered or uncovered, destination/source with none — never gets told. Sibling screen add/delete is in the committed tree (the same signal own-screen W1 already uses). That is a privacy leak of the same kind W1 was, on every ordinary push/pop.

Prior findings

Finding State
P1 parked × nativeMotion fully_addressed (watchValue wake; still-native test)
P1 still-mounted stack gesture (iOS swipe-back / Android predictive back) not_addressed (accepted; listed under “Not fixed here”)
P2 initial route treated as a push fully_addressed
P2 0×0 C3 latch fully_addressed
P1 iOS Modal visible={false} while mounted fully_addressed
P2 close watch gated on a screen-first carrier fully_addressed
P2 arrive/depart screen-first carrierOf (stack inside a slide Modal) fully_addressed

P1 — neighbour cover requires a <BugseeSecure> on the moving screen

Location: packages/react-native/src/secure/tracker.ts tellStacks / arrive / depart

Problem: joinStack only receives stackMoving from a view whose own screen is entering or leaving. carriersOf for a view on the screen below returns that screen, which already has an alternate, so arrive/depart never run as a transition and never tell. A sibling RNSScreen created or deleted on the stack is a committed fiber-tree fact; nothing walks those children.

Impact: The P2-6 cover this round added — “the screen it uncovers or covers, which moves too” — is a no-op unless the destination (push) or the screen being popped also wraps something in <BugseeSecure>. The rest-position mask stays put while native slides the still-mounted screen.

Scenario: Login PIN wrapped in <BugseeSecure>. Push a settings/home screen that has none, or pop one of those back onto login. iOS native-stack moves the previous screen sideways (a sliver stays visible beside the incoming card); Android default is any (scale / 10% slide). For ~350–800 ms the digits are drawn off the rest mask. The new tests always render both screens, so they cannot catch this. The e2e stack case only exercises the moving screen's own cover.

This is not the accepted swipe-back limit: there is a JS-visible signal (new child without alternate, or deletions on the stack), the same one W1 already uses for the view on the moving screen.

Fix: Detect sibling enter/leave from the stack's child list and record it on the stack (same WeakMap births already uses for late joiners), then have every joined view apply screenCover(..., moving: false) from that, including parked/tick. Do not require another instance on the moving screen. Control: render only the below view, then add/delete a sibling screen with no <BugseeSecure> on it; expect the band / whole screen.

P2 — iOS card modal treats the presenting screen as still

Location: packages/react-native/src/secure/transition.ts screenCover / stackMotionOf

Problem: iOS modal / formSheet / pageSheet with the default animation is classified upwards. For the neighbour, upwards + moving: false returns the rest view. iOS 13+ card presentation scales (and slightly translates) the presenting view controller about the centre; a field not at centre moves.

Impact: Even when tellStacks does fire (the sheet has its own <BugseeSecure>), a PIN at the top of the presenting screen is drawn ~tens of px off its rest mask for the present/dismiss animation.

Scenario: Login with a password field, present a formSheet / pageSheet that itself has a secure field (so the neighbour path runs). Card scale ~0.92 about centre on an 800-pt screen moves a field at y=100 down by ~20–30 px; that strip is recorded unmasked.

Fix: For iOS card presentations, neighbour motion should be any (whole presenting screen), not upwards-as-still. Keep upwards + rest view for Android slide_from_bottom, where the below screen really does not move. Add a transitions test that presents formSheet and expects the below view to cover its screen, not only itself.

Residuals (accepted / out of this PR)

  • Interactive back gestures still have no JS-visible signal; native-side hook remains the follow-up.
  • e2e secure-transitions Modal still has no stack; nested open/close stays unit-tested.
  • Device leak table covers through 0516099; round 2 is unit-tested.
  • First frame or two of a native animation, before JS sees _animation, is documented.

1. Overall risk: Medium

Own-screen W1/C3/B6, the Modal+stack join, and fail-closed unmeasurable native nodes look correct. The new neighbour feature misses the primary use of that feature.

2. Merge recommendation: request changes

Land after #87, once neighbour detection does not depend on a <BugseeSecure> on the other screen.

3. Most important issues to fix

Neighbour enter/leave from the stack's child list (P1). Then iOS card-modal neighbour cover (P2). Swipe-back can stay listed.

4. Positive observations

watchValue is the right cheaper replacement for never-parking under every Animated(RNSScreen). Joining the measured rect with both shadow-tree bases (rendered vs C++ end value) is the correct fail-closed invert. diffClamp / clamped interpolation bounding an Animated.event value is exactly the collapsing-header case. stackAnimation → band/column/view/any matches what the stack actually clips to.

From the Cursor review of #88 at 287b69c:
- P1: a view on the screen below was told of a push or pop only by a
<BugseeSecure> on the moving screen. Each view now also watches its
stacks' props (a commit that pushes or pops re-renders the stack, woken
within a frame, nothing measured) and compares the stack's screens with
the last it saw: one added or removed moves its own screen too.
- P2: on iOS a card presentation (modal, formSheet, pageSheet) also scales
the screen below; there the screen below covers its whole rectangle.

The secure-perf animated mode's result regex had one space too many.

Deep review (111a44b, stacked on #87)

Round-3 neighbour cover is the right shape for native-stack. Each view on a stack now diffs that stack’s screen hosts (screensOn / checkStacks) from a props-only watchNode on the stack, so a push or pop with no <BugseeSecure> on the moving screen still covers the screen below. stackMotionOf(props, false) is any for an iOS card presentation’s neighbour (the presenting VC scales) and stays the rest view for an explicit slide_from_bottom. I did not run Jest here (no node_modules); CI lint, typecheck, unit is green on this SHA.

Walked checkStacks against isHidden / activityState: native-stack cannot decrease activityState (Screen.tsx throws; native ScreenStack ignores the prop and uses child order), so the below screen stays measurable and the first-read skip plus later add/remove diff actually run. Tests keep activityState: 2 on the below screen, which matches that. Controls for same-screens re-render, first snapshot, and wrapper ScreenStackItem depth are the right mutants.

No remaining blocking P0–P3.

Prior findings at this HEAD:

  • P1 neighbour cover only via tellStacks — fully_addressed (111a44b).
  • P2 iOS card neighbour is the rest view — fully_addressed (111a44b).
  • P1 parked × nativeMotion — fully_addressed.
  • P1 still-mounted stack gesture — not_addressed (accepted; listed in the PR).
  • P2 initial route as push, 0×0 C3 latch, iOS Modal visible={false}, close-watch latch, arrive/depart screen-first carrierOf — fully_addressed.

  1. Overall risk: Low (privacy leaks this PR set out to close are covered on the JS-visible paths; interactive back remains a known native-side hole).
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve.
  3. Most important to fix: Nothing blocking. Residual: iOS swipe-back / Android predictive back still move a mounted screen with nothing JS can see.
  4. Positives: Neighbour cover is keyed by Fabric canonical (survives current/alternate swap); first snapshot does not treat the initial child list as a transition; tellStacks now classifies neighbour motion with moving: false, matching checkStacks. Mutation-tight tests for the no-secure-on-top case fail on 287b69c as claimed.

…w is drawn

The mask joins where the view is drawn with where the shadow tree has it,
so it is wider than the drawn rectangle; check containment, not equality.

Deep review (b5bfd8c, stacked on #87)

b5bfd8c is the right e2e change: the native-driven mask is the join of the drawn rect and the shadow-tree rest, so containment is the assertion that matches throughMotion. Production code is unchanged since 111a44b (neighbour checkStacks / iOS card any).

Walked carry × screenMoved × checkStacks on a view that is still arriving when a second screen is pushed. The neighbour path from 111a44b does fire; carry() then throws the new deadline away.

Findings

  1. P1 packages/react-native/src/secure/tracker.ts:415 — carry() overwrites cover.until with the arriving transition’s original deadline, so a neighbour push/pop while the view is still being carried is uncovered early.

Residuals (accepted, not blocking)

  • Interactive back (iOS swipe-back, Android predictive back): still no JS-visible signal; documented.
  • First frame or two of a native animation, Reanimated layout/entering/exiting: documented.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Medium — one privacy leak on a common navigation pattern (navigate twice within 800 ms); the W1/C3/B6 covers themselves still hold for a single transition.
  2. Merge recommendation: request changes
  3. Fix before merge: keep the later of carried.until and any neighbour/watchClosing deadline (Math.max, as screenMoved already does), and add a unit test that pushes a second screen with no <BugseeSecure> during the first hold.
  4. Otherwise: interval-arithmetic native transforms, carriersOf joining stack+Modal, props-only stack watch, and the e2e containment check are in good shape. lint, typecheck, unit is green on this SHA; I did not run Jest locally.

Deep review (01a97f7, stacked on #87)

01a97f7 only scopes the animated secure-perf Debug p95 budget to 8 ms. Production is unchanged since 111a44b. Walked measured → checkStacks / screenMoved → carry → watchClosing → covering again: the neighbour path still fires; carry() still throws the new deadline away on every later frame.

Findings

  1. P1 packages/react-native/src/secure/tracker.ts:415 — carry() overwrites cover.until with the arriving transition’s original deadline, so a neighbour push/pop or an iOS Modal close that starts while this view is still being carried is uncovered early.

Prior findings at this HEAD

P1 carry() clobbers neighbour/watchClosing until not_addressed
P1 neighbour cover only via tellStacks fully_addressed (checkStacks)
P2 iOS card neighbour is the rest view fully_addressed
P1 parked × nativeMotion fully_addressed

Residuals (accepted, not blocking)

  • First frame or two of a native animation, Reanimated layout/entering/exiting: documented.

Verdict

  1. Overall risk: Medium — one privacy leak on common navigation (navigate twice within 800 ms, or dismiss a slide Modal before the open hold ends). Single-transition W1/C3/B6 covers still hold.
  2. Merge recommendation: request changes

Add a unit test that pushes a second screen with no <BugseeSecure> during the first hold, and one that sets visible={false} on a still-mounted slide Modal before the open hold ends.
  4. Otherwise: interval-arithmetic native transforms, carriersOf joining stack+Modal, props-only stack watch, e2e containment, and the scoped animated Debug budget are in good shape. rn compat (0.86) failed during npm i (exit 152, ~17s) — install flake; 0.81–0.85 and 0.87 passed. lint, typecheck, unit was still pending on this SHA; last unit SUCCESS was b5bfd8c. I did not run Jest locally (no node_modules).

Require frame samples for the animated modes.

The native-driven header registers its animated root with the per-frame loop. SecurePerfAnimatedProbe records those callbacks for both *-frames results.

The current test accepts zero frame samples and skips p95 when result.ticks === '0'. A missing frame sample can therefore pass without checking the intended performance path. Require MIN_TICKS for every mode and always apply the p95 assertion.

From the Cursor review of #88 at 01a97f7: carry() set the cover's
deadline back to its own transition's every frame, so a push or pop on
the same stack, or an iOS Modal set visible={false}, while a view was
still carried in kept it covered only to the first transition's end.
carry() and watchClosing() now keep the later deadline, as screenMoved()
does.

From CodeRabbit: the Animated perf modes require frame samples too.

Deep review @ c812b12 (unique vs #87 @ 58dc051)

Follow-up to #87: cover native stack push/pop (including the screen below, with no secure view of its own), slide Modal open/close (including iOS visible={false} while mounted), and native-driven Animated transforms. Walked tracker.ts, transition.ts, nativeAnimation.ts, measureLoop.ts, ancestry/clipping, BugseeSecure.tsx, the transition/nativeAnimation unit tests, and the Android e2e. Did not run Jest locally (no node_modules); CI lint, typecheck, unit is SUCCESS on this SHA. RN compat 0.81–0.87 all passed.

Prior findings

  • P1 carry() overwriting cover.until (Ʃ7f7 / the duplicate at 16:54): fully addressed in c812b12. carry() and watchClosing() now Math.max with the existing deadline, same as screenMoved(). Measured order is still checkStacks → carry → watchClosing → covering(); a neighbour push at t=400 during an arrive hold, or an iOS Modal hide during the open hold, keeps the later until. Tests: “a screen pushed over it while it is still being pushed…” and “a Modal hidden while it still slides in…” (the first rectangle of the latest publish is the cover, so these actually fail without the Math.max).
  • Round-2/3 neighbour checkStacks and iOS card any for the screen below: still fully addressed.
  • Interactive swipe-back / predictive back P1: still not addressed (accepted in this PR; documented in the README and JSDoc).

New findings

No remaining P0–P3. Adversarial cases that hold:

  • carry() early-return when carried.until has passed leaves a later neighbour/watchClosing deadline on this.cover; covering() drops it only when that later until is due.
  • Late-mounting a view on an already-moving neighbour screen still misses tellStacks / the first checkStacks snapshot — over-masking is the usual outcome if arrive() catches the same commit; a child that mounts after the push commit is an accepted gap of the time-based hold, not a regression of c812b12.
  • seenAnimating trusting a value after timing ends is the necessary counterpart to “event-driven ⇒ whole surface”; mixing Animated.timing then Animated.event on one node is indistinguishable from rest without native hints, and whole-surface-forever after every timing would be worse. Same class as the documented event/Reanimated limits.
  • binaryBound hulling add/sub/mul is intentional (indistinguishable fields; tests pin it) — over-mask, not a leak.

Residual (accepted / documented)

  • Interactive back gestures: no JS-visible node or deletion.
  • First frame or two of a native animation before the next rAF.
  • iOS Modal close, RNSModalScreen, iOS card neighbour, and the 800 ms hold are unit-tested only (e2e is Android log-based).
  • Reanimated transform → whole surface, clipped; other Reanimated motion is unseen.

1. Overall risk: Low

2. Merge recommendation: Approve

3. Most important issues to fix

None blocking. The swipe-back leak stays a follow-up (native-side hook), as already agreed.

4. Positive observations

The hold is now a single rule (Math.max on every writer of cover.until). Neighbour cover without a moving secure view, stack-inside-Modal carriersOf + joined covers, and iOS still-mounted close are covered with tests that failed on the previous heads. Native-driven bounds fail closed (unknown node / spring / rotation / event → whole surface, clipped). Compat script pins the Animated fields and deletions this code reads. Device table for W1/C3/B6 is the right kind of evidence for a privacy mask.

…ntent, replace)

From the round-2 re-review of #88 at c812b12:
- N1: Animated nodes in a transform that are not native yet are watched
every frame (their animation, value and __isNative): the first animation
with the native driver commits nothing, so a parked or ticking view is
woken by the JS frame it starts in, and covered then.
- N2: the native Animated.event attachments made through AnimatedEvent's
__attach/__detach (an Animated component's props) are followed; a value
one is attached to is unbounded while attached, animated or not. Where
AnimatedEvent cannot be loaded, a native value is trusted only while the
app listens to it. Nothing trusts a value for having been seen animating.
- N3: a screen or Modal first seen after it came, birth unknown, is taken
as coming then (once per carrier); screens seen pushed by a view on their
stack are recorded with the push's time; a tree mounted whole is not.
- N4: a screen replaced on its stack is covered by the incoming screen's
animation (the whole screen when not known); a cover set as a view
departs joins one still running, the later end kept.
- P3: add, subtract and multiply are told apart by what they compute (a
division too, without its field); a level inside one the shadow tree
scales up is unbounded; a function that comes twice takes its own place's
rendered value; Reanimated inline shared values and CSS animations and
transitions are detected; on Paper a host is keyed by its shared
instance; screensOn is memoised per measure pass.
- secure-perf-animated times 20 views in Debug under the one 2 ms budget.
- README, JSDoc and the compat guard follow.

From CodeRabbit on #88 at 8c9f42c:
- a native translation inside a host whose committed transform scales up

more than its value: the levels inside it are unbounded, as inside a
  native level scaled up;
- the compat guard looks for an Animated component's __attach call with

Round 4 of the #88 review:
- R3-1: Animated.attachNativeEvent is followed (AnimatedImplementation, which
React Native's ScrollView calls for its sticky headers, and the public
Animated object), as AnimatedEvent attachments are. A native value whose
driver is not known (made native before the package loaded, or left where
an event took it) is unbounded rather than still.
- R3-2: the following lives in secure/followEvents.ts, imported by the
package entry for its effect, so Metro's inlineRequires leaves it eager.
Patched once, its state shared through a symbol on every patched object.
- R3-3: each stack keeps its recent changes; a view first shown on the screen
a pop uncovers (mounted while hidden, or during the pop) is covered for the
rest of the hold. A stack read first is compared with its render before.
- R3-4: no time-based release. Bounded where provable: interpolations whose
ends clamp or extend flat (with their easing's span), and on Android a
  ScrollView's contentOffset within [0, max] plus a fling's overrun.
- P3: the fallback fails closed; a JS-driven value is woken when made native
rather than polled every frame; the compat guard checks the new internals.

The mask joins where the view is drawn with where the shadow tree has it,
so it is wider than the drawn rectangle; check containment, not equality.

Release keeps 2 ms (p95 1.27-1.36 ms while scrolling). React's dev build
runs the same per-tick walk 2.5-5x slower, p95 3.4-6.4 ms; the base also
missed 2 ms in Debug there. The Debug budget for these modes is 8 ms.

From the Cursor review of #88 at 01a97f7: carry() set the cover's
deadline back to its own transition's every frame, so a push or pop on
the same stack, or an iOS Modal set visible={false}, while a view was
still carried in kept it covered only to the first transition's end.
carry() and watchClosing() now keep the later deadline, as screenMoved()
does.

The device run caught one leak frame in B6 under load: Animated.loop's next
iteration resets the value (a native jump back to its start) and starts it
again, and the cover followed only on the next JS frame. AnimatedValue's
animate, setValue, resetAnimation and offset methods now wake the views
over it at once (after React Native's own method ran), which measure and
publish before React Native hands the change to the UI thread. The first
native animation (N1) is covered the same way. Native-side changes (an
animation ending) are still polled every frame for native values only.

A value no one watches is moved with nothing to wake; methods React Native

- R4-2: a transform animated from JS (useNativeDriver: false) moves the view
every frame with no wrapped call: a Pending level runs while a root has
an animation or tracking, and the frame loop stops once it ends.
- R4-1: Android renders a vertical ScrollView's content through the View
component: the content container's host is found through up to four
components, for the contentOffset bound and for #87's clip watch (a
parked view under a vertical Android ScrollView was woken only on the
tick). The shared test fixture now has Android's shape.
- P3: React Native's internals are required in try blocks (optional to
Metro: a moved file builds and follows nothing); the attach wakes again
once counted; a value JS set while attached is unknown after the last
detach; a ScrollView under a scale other than 1 is unbounded; the fling
margin is 64 dp, documented as an assumption; the compat guard checks the
four paths and Android's content container; docs.

The J1 device run (a box slid by a JS-driven timing) drew the box's leading
edge one step ahead of the frame that measured it: thin slivers in 3 of 46
frames. While a JS animation runs on a root, the transform is now bounded
over the animation's path like a native one (a spring or tracking: the
whole surface, clipped), and followed every frame; at rest, back to the
measured rectangle and the tick.

…s is unbounded

Round 5's device run of N2 found it: once R4-1 found the vertical content
container, the sticky header was bounded by its translate alone, but its
content moves by the same offset, natively ahead of the shadow tree, and
the box was drawn a box-height above the cover at the start of each scroll
(3/3 runs). A level with a value that is the offset of a ScrollView above it
is unbounded again: that ScrollView's viewport, as in round 4 (0 in 8/8).
A header outside the content (a parallax header) stays bounded.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
…y above the level

Stryker's survivor showed it: a transform around a ScrollView whose own
offset drives it moves a view in that ScrollView's content by the same
offset twice too, so it is unbounded wherever the ScrollView sits in the
view's ancestry.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
…llowed (P3-A)

The final review's PROBE-STICKY-NEXT: with nothing followed, a scroll value
made native unfollowed, or a scroll whose ScrollView is not found, a sticky
header that has a next one (its interpolation flat at both ends) was bounded
by its own translate alone, N2's shape. A native root whose driver is not
known now counts as the offset of a ScrollView above the view whenever one
is there: that ScrollView's viewport, as when the scroll is followed. A
gesture attachment is no scroll: a swipeable row in a list stays bounded.
