Fixes #135

What

After a JS runtime reload the native filters (network, breadcrumb, log) outlive the old runtime, but the new runtime has not subscribed. Previously requests were emitted to nobody: Android dropped them after 9 s, iOS left them pending forever, and the Android log filter was reset to unfiltered pass-through by the module constructor (a privacy gap).

Now each bridge tracks which module's JS armed it. Attaching a new module disarms it (before the new sink becomes visible), and a request while disarmed is dropped at once. Only the attached module can arm (a stale module's late enable is ignored on Android). The Android log filter keeps the user's filter across a reload instead of resetting it.

Trade-off (production consequence of failing closed)

Native filter state lives for the process. After any runtime reload (DevSettings.reload, Updates.reloadAsync(), CodePush restartApp()) all network events, breadcrumbs and log lines for a filter that was on are dropped until the new JS calls setXFilter again. Filters installed lazily or conditionally (after login or consent), or OTA bundles that stop setting a filter, lose data for the rest of the process. The JSDoc on setNetworkFilter, setBreadcrumbFilter and setLogFilter says: call unconditionally at startup on every launch, and use setXFilter(null) to opt out (restores pass-through). Apps that never set a filter are unaffected.

Interplay with #136 (PR #160)

I merged #160 into a throwaway local branch (not pushed) and checked:

Tests

  • JVM: ./gradlew :bugsee-android-bridge:testDebugUnitTest passes, including new tests for stale-module arming on all three bridges and LogFilterBridge.attachModule (the constructor sequence, so reverting it to setEnabled(false) now fails a test).
  • iOS: BGSRNFilterArmingTests (XCTest). The three arming checks in BugseeModule.mm are one-line uses of that helper and are covered only by the CI compile.
  • JS: lint, typecheck, jest pass (comment-only change).
  • No device reload e2e.

… its filter (#135)

The native network, breadcrumb and log filters outlive a JS runtime, but a
new runtime has not subscribed. Each bridge now tracks whether the current
module's JS armed the filter; attaching a module disarms it, and a request
while disarmed is dropped at once (no emit to nobody, no 9s wait, no iOS
pending-forever). Android log filter no longer resets to the unfiltered
pass-through on module creation, so a redaction the app relied on keeps
applying (dropping lines) until setLogFilter is called again or cleared.

…ent reload semantics (#135)

Android bridges now record which module armed them and compare it to the
attached sink, so a stale module's late enable cannot arm the new runtime,
and attach() disarms before the sink becomes visible. The log filter's
constructor sequence is a bridge method (attachModule) and is tested.
JSDoc names full reload and OTA reloads, asks for an unconditional
startup call, and documents setXFilter(null) as the opt-out.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved React Native filtering across JavaScript reloads by preventing stale runtimes from receiving or changing breadcrumb, log, and network events.
    • Events are safely dropped until the replacement runtime registers its filters.
    • Preserved pass-through behavior when filters are explicitly disabled.
    • Log requests received during listener installation now expire safely instead of remaining pending on iOS.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified filter persistence, required startup configuration for every runtime and OTA bundle, and how to restore pass-through behavior.

Android and iOS filter bridges now track the module that armed network, log, and breadcrumb filtering. After module replacement, events and requests are dropped until the current JavaScript runtime enables the filter. Stale modules cannot change process-wide filter state. Android wiring and tests cover replacement and stale callers. iOS adds synchronized ownership tracking. TypeScript documentation describes reload behavior and pass-through configuration.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium · Unblocks: 1 PR

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c84cd

A network request racing with a JavaScript reload can reach the old runtime and be dropped rather than handled by the replacement. Resolve or explicitly accept this reload-edge behavior before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 547ec

The change strengthens privacy by dropping events until the replacement runtime registers its filters. A narrow Android concurrency window is widened, however, allowing an overlapping old runtime to receive a network-filter request. Applications must also re-register filters after every reload to avoid prolonged telemetry loss.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Android network requests now capture the armed runtime before sanitization rather than afterward. If replacement attachment occurs during that work, the request can subsequently be emitted to the superseded runtime without revalidating ownership. With overlapping runtimes using different privacy policies, the older callback may decide what is recorded instead of the replacement callback. Capture-before-emission races already existed, but this PR widens that window. Production reachability and disclosure are not demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected authority is process-wide telemetry filtering within an application: network events, breadcrumbs, and log lines. The identified concurrency concern is confined to Android network events crossing overlapping runtime ownership; the inspected path does not establish additional service, tenant, environment, or credential authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The concern requires a request to select armed runtime A, replacement B to attach during sanitization, and A to remain capable of handling the later emission. Head retains A; the merge base selected the sink after sanitization. A differing old privacy policy could therefore govern the event. Sanitization still precedes emission, and no remote ability to force runtime overlap or successful disclosure was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Android network enablement and removal hold the same state lock used by attachment, covering caller identity through the SDK setter. iOS checks ownership before proceeding, but releases its owner lock before SDK installation or removal. Its new identity checks therefore do not establish fully transactional ownership of those external side effects.
  • inferred — iOS stale-setter ordering can still interfere with a replacement's filter installation, including removal after a replacement enables filtering. Equivalent SDK removal and generation ordering existed at the merge base, so this is residual architecture risk rather than an introduced PR concern. Breadcrumb generations reject removals superseded after generation capture, but do not make the earlier ownership check atomic with that capture.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Android teardown removes requests owned by the departing sink and drops still-valid borrowed events. Replies remove pending entries before applying replacements, making duplicate replies no-ops. These controls limit stale-request effects, but do not revoke a captured sink or prevent insertion after a teardown sweep.

Review of PR #161: fail closed after a JS reload

I read the full diff against the surrounding bridge code, BugseeModule.mm, and the JS setXFilter entry points. I did not run any tests or builds, so the test status below is taken from the PR description.

  • Gather context and read the diff
  • Trace the arm/disarm flow on Android and iOS
  • Post findings

Findings

P3 Low: armedFor keeps the detached module alive (Android, all three bridges)
I posted this as an inline comment on NetworkFilterBridge.java:123. detach() clears sink but not armedFor, so the singleton keeps a strong reference to an invalidated BugseeModule and its ReactApplicationContext. A normal reload hides this, because the next attach() overwrites it. It lasts for the process when React is torn down with no replacement. The fix is one line in each detach: armedFor.compareAndSet(current, null).

I found nothing at P2 or above.

Things I checked that hold up

  • Arm and disarm ordering on Android. attach disarms before the sink is published. Any interleaving of arm() and attach() leaves armedFor != sink, so it fails closed and never leaks.
  • Log filter across a reload.
    • attachModule no longer calls setEnabled(false), so userFilter survives.
    • ask() drops while unarmed.
    • The pass-through (userFilter false) is checked before the armed check. That means setLogFilter(null) correctly restores pass-through after a reload.
  • JS opt-out path. setLogFilter always calls setLogFilterEnabled(current !== undefined), even when the new runtime's current is already undefined. The documented setXFilter(null) opt-out therefore reaches native.
  • iOS.
    • armFor: runs before the Installed early return, so the second and later runtimes still arm.
    • The owner is held weakly, so a released module reads as not armed.
    • isArmedFor: is compared against BGS…FilterModule, which init sets and invalidate clears by identity. Nothing is left pending on an unarmed module.
  • Network ask. The arming check runs before the default sanitizer, and a drop there is the intended behaviour.

Minor notes (no action required)

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change only ever drops data more eagerly. I found no path that leaks unfiltered data.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve once the P3 is fixed, or accept it as a follow-up. It is not blocking.
  3. Most important issues to fix:
    • Clear armedFor in detach on all three bridges, and add a test for it.
    • Decide whether iOS should mirror Android's stale-module guard, or reword the description.
  4. Positives:

I made no changes to the repo.

Review: a stale module's enable or disable no longer arms or clears the
process-wide filter (Android by sink identity, iOS by the current-module
pointer), and detach releases the armed reference so the bridge singleton
does not pin an invalidated module.

Review of PR #161 (re-review after 7fd9180)

I read the full diff against origin/main and the surrounding code: the three Android bridges, BugseeModule.java, BugseeModule.mm (attach, invalidate and all three setters), BGSRNFilterArming, and the JS setXFilter entry points. I did not run any tests or builds. The test status below comes from the PR description and from reading the test names.

Earlier findings: fixed in 7fd9180

  • P3 armedFor pinned the detached module (Android). All three detach() methods now call armedFor.compareAndSet(current, null).
  • Stale module could disable the shared filter (Android). All three setEnabled(enabled, caller) methods return early when sink.get() != caller. The breadcrumb check is inside withSdkLock. LogFilterBridgeTest has aStaleModulesDisableDoesNotClearTheNewModulesFilter. I only grepped LogFilterBridgeTest, so I haven't confirmed equivalent stale-disable tests exist for the network and breadcrumb bridges.
  • iOS stale module could re-arm or disable (CodeRabbit, and the mismatch I noted last time). All three setters now return early when the current-module pointer is not self, so only the attached module can arm or disable. This matches the PR description and Android.

New findings

None at P0–P3. I checked these cases adversarially:

  • Attach races on Android. attach does armedFor.set(null) and then sink.set(next). If a stale arm(old) lands between the two, armedFor ends up as the old module and sink as the new one. The identity comparison fails, so requests are dropped. It can only fail closed.
  • No-caller overloads. setEnabled(enabled) passes sink.get() as the caller, so the guard always passes. These overloads are only used by tests.
  • Module with no sink. If the sink is null after a detach, a late call from a non-null stale module is ignored.
  • Network arming on repeat calls. On Android arm runs before the installed.compareAndSet check. On iOS armFor: runs before the Installed early return. A second or later runtime therefore arms even when the SDK filter is already installed.
  • Manual breadcrumb add. When ask drops because the bridge is disarmed, the manual id is not claimed, so the caller's takeUnclaimedManualAdd path handles it. This is the same path as the existing null-sink drop.
  • Log filter on Android.
    • attachModule no longer resets userFilter.
    • The pass-through check (!userFilter) runs before the armed check, so setLogFilter(null) restores pass-through after a reload.
  • JS opt-out. All three setXFilter functions call native setXFilterEnabled(current !== undefined) unconditionally. In a fresh runtime setXFilter(null) therefore still reaches native with false, which is what the new JSDoc relies on.
  • iOS arming state.
    • Disarm on attach is implicit by identity, because the new module differs from the weak owner.
    • A released old owner reads as not armed.
    • The module pointers are set in attachToBridges and cleared by identity in invalidate, so the setter guard cannot lock out the live module.

Minor notes (no action required)

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change only drops data more eagerly, and I found no path that leaks unfiltered data.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. The earlier P3 and CodeRabbit concerns are addressed.
  3. Most important issues to fix: None blocking.
  4. Positives:
    • Every race I could build fails closed.
    • Android and iOS now use the same ownership rule: only the attached module can arm or disable.
    • The tests cover the real constructor sequence (attachModule), stale arm, stale disable and detach.
    • The production trade-off is documented in the JSDoc and the PR body.

Review of PR #161 (re-review after c583cee)

I read the c583cee diff and the full NetworkFilterBridge, BreadcrumbFilterBridge and LogFilterBridge. I did not run tests or builds.

Earlier findings

  • Network stale-disable race (CodeRabbit, 7fd9180 review): fixed in c583cee. attach and setEnabled(enabled, caller) now share stateLock. The identity check, arm, installed and the Bugsee.setNetworkEventFilter call are one critical section, so a stale disable can no longer remove the replacement's filter.
  • Breadcrumb: fixed in c583cee. attach now takes sdkLock, which setEnabled already held.
  • The P3 about armedFor pinning the detached module and the iOS stale-module guards were already fixed in 7fd9180.

New finding (inline comment posted)

P2 Medium: LogFilterBridge.setEnabled has the same race and was not given the lock.

  • c583cee changed only the network and breadcrumb bridges.
  • In LogFilterBridge, the identity check (line 252) and userFilter.set(enabled) (line 261) are not ordered against attach.
  • A stale setLogFilter(null) can pass the check, then wait while the new module attaches and enables. It then writes userFilter = false, and every line is kept unredacted.
  • The fix is the same stateLock pattern the network bridge now uses. Keep ask and route lock-free.
  • The log case is arguably worse than the network one: the failure is the log redaction going off, not a missing SDK filter.

Minor notes (no action required)

  • The new race fixes have no concurrent test, and the existing stale-disable tests are sequential. This is understandable, since the interleaving is hard to force.
  • BreadcrumbFilterBridge.attach now blocks while another thread holds sdkLock inside Bugsee.addBreadcrumb. I found no cycle, but the module constructor now waits on an in-flight add.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low to Medium. Every race I could build fails closed except the log one above.
  2. Merge recommendation: Fix the log-bridge lock first. It is small and mirrors c583cee. Then approve.
  3. Most important issue to fix: Serialize attach, attachModule, detach and setEnabled in LogFilterBridge under one lock.
  4. Positives:
    • c583cee closes the network and breadcrumb races the earlier reviews raised.
    • The ownership rule is now the same on Android and iOS.
    • The tests cover the real constructor sequence, stale arm, stale disable and detach.

Review of PR #161 (re-review after e315390)

I read the e315390 diff and the current LogFilterBridge, NetworkFilterBridge and BreadcrumbFilterBridge. I did not run any tests or builds.

Earlier findings

  • P2: LogFilterBridge.setEnabled race (my last review). Fixed in e315390.
    • attach, detach's CAS pair and the whole of setEnabled(enabled, caller) now share stateLock.
    • The identity check, arm and userFilter.set are one critical section, so a stale setLogFilter(null) can no longer turn redaction off after the new module has enabled it.
    • ensureInstalled() stays outside the lock, and ask and route stay lock-free.
    • The new lock does not nest with anything else, so I found no deadlock.
  • The network and breadcrumb stale-disable races were fixed in c583cee. The armedFor pin and the iOS stale-module guards were fixed in 7fd9180.

New finding (inline comment posted)

P3 Low: detach is not under the state lock in the network and breadcrumb bridges.

  • LogFilterBridge.detach now takes stateLock.
  • NetworkFilterBridge.detach and BreadcrumbFilterBridge.detach still do not.
  • A detach(old) that lands between arm(old)'s sink == caller check and its armedFor.set(old) leaves sink == null and armedFor == old.
  • This fails closed, because requests still drop. But it re-pins the invalidated module until the next attach. 7fd9180 had fixed that pin.
  • The fix is to take stateLock (network) or sdkLock (breadcrumb) around the two CAS calls, as the log bridge now does.

Minor notes (no action required)

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. Every race I could build fails closed. The only remaining one is a transient memory pin.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. The P2 is closed. The P3 above can be fixed here or as a follow-up.
  3. Most important issue to fix: Put detach under the same lock as attach and setEnabled in the network and breadcrumb bridges, for consistency with the log bridge.
  4. Positives:
    • All three Android bridges now order attach and setEnabled under one lock.
    • The failure direction is consistently closed, and the ownership rule matches iOS.
    • The tests cover attachModule, stale arm, stale disable and detach.
    • The production trade-off is documented in the JSDoc and the PR body.

Review of PR #161 (re-review after 76b3608)

I read the 76b3608 diff and the current BreadcrumbFilterBridge, NetworkFilterBridge and LogFilterBridge. I also checked the attach and detach call sites in BugseeModule.java. I did not run tests or builds.

Earlier findings

  • P3: detach not under the state lock in the network and breadcrumb bridges (my last review). Fixed in 76b3608.
    • NetworkFilterBridge.detach now wraps the sink and armedFor CAS pair in synchronized (stateLock).
    • BreadcrumbFilterBridge.detach wraps the same pair in withSdkLock.
    • arm(caller) runs inside setEnabled under the same lock. So detach(old) can no longer land between arm's sink == caller check and its armedFor.set(old). The invalidated module can't be re-pinned.
    • Pending cleanup stays outside the lock in both bridges, as I suggested.
  • The log bridge race was fixed in e315390. The network and breadcrumb stale-disable races were fixed in c583cee. The armedFor pin and the iOS stale-module guards were fixed in 7fd9180.

New findings

None at P0–P3. I checked:

  • Deadlock.
    • detach runs from invalidate(). ask and route take no lock, so the new acquisition cannot form a cycle with them.
    • The one blocking case is BreadcrumbFilterBridge.detach. It can wait on sdkLock while another thread is inside Bugsee.addBreadcrumb. The filter runs re-entrantly inside that add and only emits a request to JS. I found no path back to a lock held by the detach caller.
    • NetworkFilterBridge.setEnabled holds stateLock across Bugsee.setNetworkEventFilter. The SDK's filter callback (ask) does not take stateLock, so that nests safely.
  • Lock consistency. attach, detach and setEnabled now share one lock on all three Android bridges. The ownership rule matches iOS.
  • Lock-free arm(). The no-argument arm() and arm(caller) are still lock-free on their own. arm(caller) is only called from setEnabled, which holds the lock. The no-argument form is for tests only.

Minor notes (no action required)

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. Every race I could build fails closed, and the transient memory pin from the last review is closed.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. No open findings.
  3. Most important issues to fix: None.
  4. Positives:
    • All three Android bridges now order attach, detach and setEnabled under one lock, and ask and route stay lock-free.
    • The failure direction is consistently closed, and Android and iOS use the same ownership rule.
    • The tests cover attachModule, stale arm, stale disable and detach.
    • The production trade-off is documented in the JSDoc and the PR body.

Maintain ownership checks for in-flight requests.

ask captures current before snapshotJson(event) and later dispatches with current.onBreadcrumbFilterRequest(...). If attach replaces the sink during serialization, the request can still be sent to the old sink.

attach also leaves existing Pending entries in the map. Until the old sink detaches, reply can apply a stale response without checking whether its owner is still attached.

Serialize the final ownership check with dispatch, and invalidate or reject pending entries whose owner is no longer attached.

Invalidate superseded requests before dispatch.

ask() captures the old sink before sanitization and snapshotting. If attach() replaces that sink during either operation, ask() still sends the request to the old sink. attach() also leaves its pending entries replyable until detach() or timeout.

Serialize the final ownership check with dispatch, and remove or reject pending entries owned by a superseded sink. Add a test that blocks snapshotting, attaches a new sink, and verifies that the old sink receives no request.

Sweep: the redundant current = asked alias in NetworkFilterBridge.ask is removed in 94c4276.

CodeRabbit's outside-diff notes (BreadcrumbFilterBridge:127-132, NetworkFilterBridge:157-163: ask() captures the sink before snapshotting, so a request can reach a sink that attach() replaced meanwhile, and the old sink's pending entries stay replyable until detach) are intentionally deferred. They predate this PR and are not a privacy regression: the request goes to the old runtime, which still owns that event, and invalidate() calls detach(old), which drops every pending entry that sink owns. Reworking in-flight ownership is a separate heavy-lift change, not part of #135.

Review of PR #161 (re-review after 94c4276)

I read the 94c4276 diff and re-read the current NetworkFilterBridge, LogFilterBridge and BreadcrumbFilterBridge. I did not run tests or builds.

Earlier findings

  • Redundant current alias in NetworkFilterBridge.ask (minor note from earlier reviews): fixed in 94c4276. The asked == null check at the top of ask still returns early, so asked is non-null at the Pending construction and the onNetworkFilterRequest call. Dropping current == null loses nothing.
  • Network and breadcrumb detach not under the state lock (P3): fixed in 76b3608.
  • LogFilterBridge.setEnabled race (P2): fixed in e315390.
  • Network and breadcrumb stale-disable races: fixed in c583cee.
  • armedFor pinning the detached module, and the iOS stale-module guards: fixed in 7fd9180.

New findings

None at P0–P3.

CodeRabbit's outside-diff comments from the last review

These cover the ask() flow in the network and breadcrumb bridges. ask() captures the sink before snapshotting, so an attach() that lands during serialization can leave the request going to the old sink. I checked the scenario against the code and am not reporting it:

  • The request goes to a sink that was armed when ask started. That sink's JS holds the old runtime's filter, so the event is redacted by the policy that was current when the SDK asked.
  • detach(old) removes the old sink's pending entries and drops them. A reply from the old runtime can only apply that old filter's result to the event it was asked about.
  • A stale reply cannot arm or disable anything. Arming and disabling go through setEnabled(enabled, caller), which is gated on identity under the lock.
  • I found no path where an unfiltered event is kept. The worst case is a request emitted to a runtime that is being torn down, which fails or times out and drops.

If you want strict "no request reaches a superseded sink", a re-check of sink.get() == asked just before dispatch would narrow the window. It would not close it, because the emit is not atomic with the check, so I don't think it is worth the added code.

Minor notes (no action required)

Keep both sets of breadcrumb bridge tests; arm the bridge after attach in
the deadline tests, since an unarmed bridge now drops before any deadline.

Review of PR #161 (re-review after c0b9914, the merge of origin/main)

The only change since the last review is the merge of origin/main, which brought in #160. I read the merged NetworkFilterBridge, LogFilterBridge, BreadcrumbFilterBridge, the iOS filter code in BugseeModule.mm, and the BreadcrumbFilterBridgeTest setup. I did not run tests or builds.

What I checked in the merge

  • Android breadcrumb deadline tests. The PR description said Filters: fail-closed 9 s deadline for iOS log/network/breadcrumb and Android breadcrumb #160's five breadcrumb deadline tests needed bridge.arm() after attach(...). Every test that attaches a sink now calls arm(), including all the deadline tests (anUnansweredCrumbIsDroppedAtTheDeadline…, aReplyBeforeTheDeadline…, aFailedEmitCancelsTheDeadline, detachCancelsTheDeadline, eachCrumbHasItsOwnDeadline, and the two aReplyAfter/JustInsideTheDeadline tests). The tests that deliberately skip arming are the new disarmed and stale-module ones.
  • iOS ordering with BGSRNFilterDeadline. In the network and breadcrumb filter blocks, the isArmedFor: check runs before the pending entry is created and before BGSRNArmPendingFilterDeadline. A disarmed request is therefore dropped immediately and never occupies the pending table. The log filter has the same check at the top of its block (line 634). The setter guards (BGSRNXFilterModule != self) are still in place ahead of armFor:.
  • Android bridge locking. The merge did not alter the stateLock and sdkLock handling in attach, detach and setEnabled. Filters: fail-closed 9 s deadline for iOS log/network/breadcrumb and Android breadcrumb #160's DEADLINE_MS and expire path in the breadcrumb bridge sits after the arming check in ask. A disarmed crumb is dropped before any timer is scheduled.
  • Stale comment in logs/filter.ts. The "stays in the pending table until process death" sentence is gone. The PR text now reads "dropped when its deadline passes", so the follow-up the description asked for is done.

Earlier findings

All earlier findings are still fixed. They are the armedFor pin (7fd9180 and 76b3608), the iOS and Android stale-module guards (7fd9180), the network and breadcrumb stale-disable races (c583cee), the log-bridge race (e315390), and the detach locking (76b3608). The redundant asked alias is gone (94c4276). The outside-diff comments about ask() capturing the sink before snapshotting stay deferred, as you explained: they predate this PR, and detach(old) drops everything the old sink owns.

New findings

None at P0–P3.

Minor notes (no action required)

  • None of the race fixes has a concurrent test. The stale-disable and detach tests are sequential. That is understandable, since the interleavings are hard to force.
  • The iOS setter-level stale guards in BugseeModule.mm are covered only by the CI compile. BGSRNFilterArmingTests covers the helper, not the stale-call sequence.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. Every race I could build fails closed, and the merge adds no new path where an unfiltered event is kept.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. No open findings. Filters: fail-closed 9 s deadline for iOS log/network/breadcrumb and Android breadcrumb #160 is already in, so the cross-PR work (arm() in the breadcrumb deadline tests, the stale comment) is done.
  3. Most important issues to fix: None.
  4. Positives:
    • The merge resolved cleanly on both platforms, and the arming check sits ahead of the deadline machinery.
    • Android and iOS use the same ownership rule: only the attached module can arm or disable.
    • The production trade-off is documented in the JSDoc and the PR body.

…ownership check (#135)

A superseded module could pass the current-module check, pause, and arm or
disable after the replacement attached. The pointer claim, the check and
the arm (and the log flag write) now share one lock; no SDK call is made
under it.

Review of PR #161 (re-review after 547ec38)

I read the current BugseeModule.mm (attach, invalidate, the three setters, and the three filter blocks), BGSRNFilterArming.m, and the three Android bridges. I did not run tests or builds.

Earlier findings

  • CodeRabbit, iOS check-then-act (review of c0b9914): 547ec38 partly addresses it.
    • A new BGSRNFilterOwnerLock() now covers pointer assignment in attachToBridges, the identity-checked clears in invalidate, and the owner check plus armFor: in all three setters.
    • The log setter also does the BGSRNLogFilterUserEnabled write under it, so the log path is fully closed.
    • The network and breadcrumb disable paths still run outside the lock. See the new finding below.
  • Android: the armedFor pin, stale arm and disable, the network, breadcrumb and log locking, and the detach locking are unchanged since the last review, and they still hold.
  • c0b9914 merge with Filters: fail-closed 9 s deadline for iOS log/network/breadcrumb and Android breadcrumb #160: nothing in this push touches it.

New finding (inline comment posted)

P3 Low: iOS network and breadcrumb disable is not serialized with the ownership check.

  • Location: BugseeModule.mm:1701 (check) and :1759-1762 (uninstall). Breadcrumb has the same shape.
  • A stale setNetworkFilterEnabled:NO can pass the check, wait while the new module attaches and enables, then set Installed = NO and call [Bugsee setNetworkEventFilter:nil]. The new runtime's filter is then gone for the process.
  • The window is tiny, because the new bundle has to load during the stall. Android had the same window and it was closed.
  • Fix: hold the owner lock through the Installed flip on both disable paths, or accept the window and change the comment at line 474, which currently implies the paths are covered.

Minor notes (no action required)

  • The new lock nests as owner lock, then filter lock, in the log setter. I found no path that takes them the other way round. The filter blocks read the module pointers without the owner lock, which is fine for a weak read.
  • None of the race fixes has a concurrent test. The iOS setter guards are covered only by the CI compile, as the PR says.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. Every race I could build fails closed except the P3 above, and that one needs a very unlikely stall.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. The P3 can be fixed here or left as a follow-up.
  3. Most important issue to fix: Serialize the iOS network and breadcrumb disable with the owner check, for consistency with Android and the iOS log setter.
  4. Positives:
    • The iOS owner lock closes the attach, invalidate and arm ordering that CodeRabbit raised.
    • Android and iOS use the same ownership rule.
    • The production trade-off is documented in the JSDoc and the PR body.

A stale setter that passed the ownership check could still uninstall the
replacement's filter. The disable paths now re-check ownership and flip the
installed flag under the owner lock, ahead of the SDK setter.

Review of PR #161 (re-review after c84cdb3)

I read the c84cdb3 diff and the current iOS setters in BugseeModule.mm (setNetworkFilterEnabled:, setBreadcrumbFilterEnabled:, setLogFilterEnabled:, attachToBridges, invalidate). I did not run tests or builds.

Earlier findings

  • P3, iOS network and breadcrumb disable not serialized with the ownership check (my last review): fixed in c84cdb3.
    • Network disable: it now re-checks BGSRNNetworkFilterModule == self under BGSRNFilterOwnerLock(). It flips Installed and calls [Bugsee setNetworkEventFilter:nil] inside that same section. A stale disable that passed the early check can no longer remove the replacement's filter. After attachToBridges swaps the pointer, the stale call sees module != self and does nothing.
    • Breadcrumb disable: the queued main-queue block now checks BGSRNBreadcrumbFilterModule != self under the owner lock, then checks the generation under the breadcrumb lock. That closes the case I described, where a stale disable captures a generation taken after the replacement's enable. The ownership check catches it.
    • Comment at the lock definition: it now matches the code. It says the disable paths hold the lock across the SDK uninstall.
  • All other earlier findings stay fixed. They are the armedFor pin (7fd9180, 76b3608), the stale arm and disable guards (7fd9180), the Android network and breadcrumb locking (c583cee), the log bridge locking (e315390), and the iOS owner lock for arm, attach and invalidate (547ec38).

New findings

None at P0–P3. What I checked:

  • Lock order. Every nested acquisition goes owner lock, then a filter's own lock (network, log or breadcrumb). The filter blocks run by the SDK take only the filter locks and never the owner lock. invalidate takes the owner lock only for the identity-checked clears, and calls BGSRNDrop…OwnedBy outside it. I found no path that takes them in the other order, so no lock cycle inside this module.
  • Enable path versus a stale module. An old module's enable that passed the owner check and then lost the pointer to a new module still installs the SDK closure. armFor: was set for the old module, so isArmedFor: fails for the new module's pointer. Events drop and nothing leaks.
  • Queued breadcrumb disable after invalidate. If the old module's disable is still queued when invalidate clears the pointer, the block now returns without uninstalling. The SDK filter then stays installed with no owner, so crumbs drop. This fails closed, and it is the documented trade-off after a reload. A new module that calls setBreadcrumbFilter(null) is the owner, so its disable proceeds.
  • Main queue. The breadcrumb disable runs async on main and takes the owner lock there. No code that holds the owner lock waits synchronously on main. attachToBridges holds it only for the three pointer writes.

Minor notes (no action required)

  • The network disable now holds the owner lock across [Bugsee setNetworkEventFilter:nil] on the JS thread. That is safe only if the SDK setter never blocks on the main queue. The new comment states this ("only takes locks"), and the enable path already made the same call on the JS thread. If that assumption changes in a future SDK, the main-queue breadcrumb disable waiting on the owner lock could deadlock against it. I can't check this from the SDK source.
  • None of the race fixes has a concurrent test, and the iOS setter guards are covered only by the CI compile, as the PR says. The interleavings are hard to force, so this is understandable.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. Every race I could build fails closed, and the P3 from the last review is closed.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. No open findings.
  3. Most important issues to fix: None.
  4. Positives:
    • Android and iOS now serialize attach, ownership checks and disable under one lock, with a consistent lock order.
    • The breadcrumb disable checks both ownership and generation, which covers the stale-capture case.
    • The lock comment was updated along with the code.
    • The production trade-off is documented in the JSDoc and the PR body.
