Part of #134.

Stacked on #161 (#135, the reload "armed" gate): this branch is based on fix/issue-135-js-reload-filters, so the diff below is only this change. When #161 merges, retarget to main.

What

  1. attach() registers the full wrapper identity (the same registerWrapper() as launch/relaunch). Under auto-launch the native side registers only type and version at process start, so reports lacked the context (React Native version, JS engine, build configuration). The SDK reads the wrapper when it composes a report (EnvironmentInfoProvider, v7.4.2), so a late registration reaches reports.
  2. Opt-in fail-closed filter hold (Android). New Expo plugin option holdFilters (true or a list of network, log, breadcrumb) writes com.bugsee.reactnative.hold-filters meta-data. ReactNativeWrapperInitProvider (runs before the SDK's own provider) installs the bridge filters at process start; the SDK keeps a filter set before launch and applies it to the providers when they are created. A held filter drops events until JS calls its setter: with a function (armed) or null (pass-through). Because it builds on Filters: fail closed after a JS reload until the new runtime installs its filter #161's armed gate it also holds across a JS reload, and nothing is left pending for a reply that cannot come (also no unbounded breadcrumb pending table). Off by default: an app that never uses filters is unaffected, and an app that lists a filter but never calls its setter gets a BugseeRN warning 30 s after the module attaches.

Deliberately not done

<BugseeSecure> / setSecureRectangles masking before those mount cannot be held from the wrapper; it needs an SDK change (for example a manifest "mask until wrapper ready" flag). Documented in the README with the workaround (launch from JS instead of autoLaunch where the first frames matter). Hence "Part of", not "Fixes".

Interaction with other PRs

Verification

  • Jest (3089), typecheck, lint, plugin build; JVM testDebugUnitTest (bridge hold tests for all three bridges via injected installers, StartupHold parser/apply/watchdog, init provider).
  • Device, emulator API 36, manifest auto-launch build of examples/bare running scenario api-attach plus throwaway probes (not committed):
    • without holdFilters: a native log line written before JS, the console line, and addNetworkEvent before and after the setters are all recorded, exactly as before;
    • with holdFilters (all): the pre-JS native log line, the console line and the early network event are dropped; after setLogFilter(null) / setNetworkFilter(null) the late network event is recorded;
    • report environment.sdk.wrapper carries context (react-native, js-engine, build-configuration) with the attach() change, and has none without it.
  • Not verified on device: breadcrumbs (the probe's crumbs appeared in no capture in either build); a Bugsee.log() call is by SDK design never run through the log filter, so it is unaffected by the hold.

… its filter (#135)

The native network, breadcrumb and log filters outlive a JS runtime, but a
new runtime has not subscribed. Each bridge now tracks whether the current
module's JS armed the filter; attaching a module disarms it, and a request
while disarmed is dropped at once (no emit to nobody, no 9s wait, no iOS
pending-forever). Android log filter no longer resets to the unfiltered
pass-through on module creation, so a redaction the app relied on keeps
applying (dropping lines) until setLogFilter is called again or cleared.

…ent reload semantics (#135)

Android bridges now record which module armed them and compare it to the
attached sink, so a stale module's late enable cannot arm the new runtime,
and attach() disarms before the sink becomes visible. The log filter's
constructor sequence is a bridge method (attachModule) and is tested.
JSDoc names full reload and OTA reloads, asks for an unconditional
startup call, and documents setXFilter(null) as the opt-out.

#135)

Review: a stale module's enable or disable no longer arms or clears the
process-wide filter (Android by sink identity, iOS by the current-module
pointer), and detach releases the armed reference so the bridge singleton
does not pin an invalidated module.

…sed filter hold at process start (#134)

attach() now registers the full wrapper identity like launch/relaunch.
New holdFilters plugin option / com.bugsee.reactnative.hold-filters
meta-data installs the log, network and breadcrumb bridge filters in the
init provider; they drop events until JS calls the setter (also across a
reload, via the armed gate). Builds on the armed gate of #135.

Review of #162: attach() wrapper identity and opt-in startup filter hold

I found no P0, P1 or P2 issues. I read the diff against origin/fix/issue-135-js-reload-filters along with the surrounding bridges, BugseeModule, the JS setters and the plugin. I did not run Jest, the JVM tests, lint or a device build. Everything below comes from reading the code.

Inline findings (both P3)

  • StartupHold.java:217: in a process where RN never starts (headless, push or service-started, late brownfield RN screen), a held filter stays held and drops events for the whole process. The 30 s watchdog starts only from BugseeModule, so nothing is logged. Document it, and optionally start the watchdog from the init provider.
  • plugin/src/index.ts:122: "Needs no autoLaunch" is unverified. BugseeModule.launch says launch can replace the log filter and re-installs only the log bridge. If it also replaces the network or breadcrumb filter, the installed flag goes stale and a later setXFilter(fn) would not re-install it. Either soften the claim or verify it on a device.

Checked, no problem found

  • Release paths: setEnabled clears held only for the attached module, so a superseded module cannot release a hold. setXFilter(null) always reaches native, because the JS setters call setXFilterEnabled unconditionally.
  • Hold after a reload: it rides on Filters: fail closed after a JS reload until the new runtime installs its filter #161's armed gate. attach() disarms the bridge, so events are dropped until the new runtime arms it. LogFilterBridge.attachModule keeps userFilter, so the log hold survives too.
  • Provider safety: the init provider's meta-data read and the apply step never throw. A bad name in the list is ignored. The bridges are only touched when something is listed, so apps without holdFilters are unaffected.
  • Plugin: holdFiltersValue rejects bad input, true expands to all three, and an empty list or false writes nothing. The old value is removed before the new one is written, ahead of the if (!token) return, so it works without a token and a later prebuild without the option cleans up. The committed plugin/build/*.js matches the src changes.
  • attach(): registerWrapper() runs first, so attribution survives a failed getLaunchOptions read, and a test covers that.

Overall risk: Low. The change is opt-in, and the only default-on behaviour is the extra wrapper registration in attach().

Merge recommendation: Approve, merging after #161. Before merging, either fix the autoLaunch doc claim or check it on a device, and add the README note about processes without RN.

Most important issues to fix

  1. Verify or soften "Needs no autoLaunch", and re-install the network and breadcrumb filters after launch() if the SDK drops them.
  2. Document, or log, a hold that never releases because no RN module starts.

Positives

  • The hold reuses Filters: fail closed after a JS reload until the new runtime installs its filter #161's gate instead of adding a second mechanism.
  • Failures fail closed and never throw in the init provider.
  • JVM tests cover all three bridges, the parser, the apply step and the watchdog.
  • The device checks include a without-hold baseline.
  • The README states the limits openly: masking is not held, manifest filters are overridden for held kinds, and breadcrumbs were not verified.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Android holdFilters configuration for network, log, and breadcrumb events.
    • Filters can be held during startup until JavaScript initializes, including support for enabling all or selected filter types.
    • Added warnings when filters remain held for 30 seconds.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved automatically attached sessions so reports retain the correct attribution and wrapper identity.
  • Documentation
    • Documented startup filtering behavior, configuration options, and secure masking considerations.

The Android plugin now accepts holdFilters and writes normalized filter-hold metadata to the manifest. Android startup reads that metadata and installs network, log, and breadcrumb filters before JavaScript starts. The bridges track held state and clear or retain installed filters as JavaScript configures them. Startup monitoring warns when filters remain held. Bugsee.attach() registers wrapper identity before processing native launch options.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to fb17e

The documented startup holds and attach-time wrapper registration have no established outstanding issue that would prevent merging after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to fb17e

The startup hold is a meaningful privacy control. Application-owned configuration and runtime identity checks limit its exposure, but its effectiveness depends on the Android SDK retaining filters registered before startup. That behavior remains unverified, and initialization failures do not guarantee continued blocking. No newly exploitable attack path was established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected assets are selected captured network events, log messages, and breadcrumbs within the host application's process. Event contents may be influenced by users or remote peers, but those contents do not select holds or authorize their release in the inspected paths. No new cross-application control surface was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Hold policy originates in application-owned build configuration and is consumed by the wrapper provider. Wrapper identity registration uses the existing serialized registrar; attach() adds attribution metadata rather than a new launch or filter-authority operation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Initialization failure does not enforce an unconditional privacy hold: unsuccessful installations are omitted from held state, and log installation failure rolls userFilter back to false. Later JavaScript configuration can retry installation, but the intervening startup window is not guaranteed closed. The base already permitted that unfiltered window; no additional exposure from a real SDK failure was demonstrated.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before relying on the hold as a startup privacy guarantee, validate all three production filter setters across actual SDK auto-initialization, including installation failures, deliberate null release, and reload. Establish whether SDK callback retention matches the bridges' local installed state.

Re-review of #162 after the latest push (569104e, merge 81c7468)

I looked at the changes since my last review (8ff07a2): the README, the plugin option doc, and the stateLock / withSdkLock changes in the three bridges. I did not run Jest, the JVM tests, lint or a device build. This comes from reading the code.

My earlier findings look fixed

  • No-RN process: the README now says a held kind drops everything native code records for the life of a process that never starts React Native. The watchdog still starts only from BugseeModule, so such a process logs nothing after the start-up line. Documenting it is enough for an opt-in.
  • "Needs no autoLaunch": this is replaced in the plugin doc and the README by "meant for autoLaunch, not verified with a JS launch()".
  • CodeRabbit's reload-semantics comment: the README now says that a reload is held only if the previous runtime had a filter function installed. It also says the 30 s warning covers the first runtime only.

New code checked

  • The lock changes make attach and setEnabled (the identity check and the write) atomic. They close the window where a superseded module passes the check, pauses, and then switches off a filter the new module has turned on.
  • No lock-order or deadlock problem. The filter callbacks never take stateLock. installer.accept runs under it, but I found no path where the SDK calls back into stateLock from another thread while holding its own lock. The breadcrumb filter already ran under a reentrant lock.
  • Log.detach now takes the lock, but Network.detach and Breadcrumb.detach do not. A stale arm from a setEnabled racing a detach is harmless there: the gate compares armedFor with the current sink, so a mismatch drops the event. It fails closed, so it is only an inconsistency.

New finding (1 inline, P3)

  • NetworkFilterBridge.java:239 (same pattern in BreadcrumbFilterBridge.holdUntilJs): if the SDK setter throws during the early hold, installed stays true. A later setNetworkFilter(fn) then skips the installer and network events go unfiltered. This is conditional on the SDK throwing, which I did not verify. It matches CodeRabbit's "installation recovery" concern, and the fix is to reset the flag when the install throws.

Overall risk: Low. The change is opt-in, and the only default-on behaviour is the registerWrapper() call in attach().

Merge recommendation: Approve, merging after #161. The one remaining item is the P3 above. It is worth fixing before merge, because a fail-closed option should not fail open.

Most important issue to fix

  1. Reset installed when the early install throws in the network and breadcrumb bridges, and add a test with an installer that throws once.

Positives

  • The docs now match the code on reload, on processes without RN, and on the launch() limit.
  • Taking one lock for the identity check and the write is the right fix for the stale-module race.
  • The log bridge's retrying install makes it the model for the other two.

Re-review of #162 after the latest push (e2288e0)

I looked at what changed since my last review: the bridge install() change, the watchdog moving to the init provider, and the README wording. I did not run Jest, the JVM tests, lint or a device build. This comes from reading the code.

No new P0, P1 or P2 issues.

My earlier P3 looks fixed

  • Failed early install: NetworkFilterBridge and BreadcrumbFilterBridge now install through a shared install() that resets installed and rethrows when the SDK setter throws. holdUntilJs sets held only after the install succeeds. A failed hold is therefore not reported as held, and the next setEnabled(true) retries. Both holdUntilJs and setEnabled use it. Each bridge has a test with an installer that throws once, which checks that isHeld() is false after the failure and that the retry installs.
  • Watchdog in a process without RN: watchFromProvider(held) now starts the watchdog from the init provider, so "still held 30 s after process start" is logged even when no BugseeModule is ever created. The warning text and README now say "since process start" and mention the no-RN case. watchFromModule and its call in BugseeModule are gone, and nothing references them any more.

Checked, no problem found

  • watchFromProvider is wrapped in try/catch (Throwable), and holdFiltersEarly catches again, so the init provider still cannot throw at process start.
  • The watchdog starts only when apply actually held something. A hold that failed to install starts no watchdog and no false "still held" warning.
  • new Handler(Looper.getMainLooper()) and postDelayed are fine to call from a ContentProvider before Application.onCreate. The task only reads the three isHeld() flags and logs.
  • The one-per-process WATCHING flag still prevents a second watchdog in a multi-provider or reload case.

Minor, not blocking (P3, test coverage)

  • holdFiltersEarly starts the watchdog only when targets == StartupHold.BRIDGES. The provider tests pass fake targets, so the new watchFromProvider wiring is not covered by any test. watch() itself is covered in StartupHoldTest. If a Robolectric Looper is available in this test setup, one test that passes BRIDGES with holdFilters set would cover the wiring. Otherwise this is fine to leave.
  • README line 287 now runs well past the wrapped width. The sentence about the 30 s warning and the sentence about autoLaunch share one line. It is cosmetic.

Overall risk: Low. The change is opt-in, and the only default-on behaviour is the registerWrapper() call in attach().

Merge recommendation: Approve, merging after #161. I have no remaining blocking findings.

Most important issues to fix

  1. None blocking. Optionally add a test for the provider's watchdog wiring.

Positives

  • Both earlier findings were fixed at the root, with tests.
  • A hold that failed to install is no longer reported as held, so the watchdog output matches what is actually held.
  • The watchdog now covers the case where React Native never starts.

Re-review of #162 after the latest push (98d8110)

I looked at what changed since my last review (e2288e0). That is one commit touching the install() guard in NetworkFilterBridge and BreadcrumbFilterBridge, plus a README line wrap. I did not run Jest, the JVM tests, lint or a device build. This comes from reading the code.

No new findings (no P0, P1, P2 or P3).

What changed

  • install() in both bridges used catch (RuntimeException | Error e) { installed.set(false); throw e; }. It now uses a boolean ok flag and a finally that resets installed when the install did not complete. The commit message says the change is there so the raw-message scan (scripts/raw-messages.ts) passes. I did not run that scan.
  • The README change only re-wraps one line. The text is the same, and it also fixes the over-long line I mentioned last time.

Checked, no problem found

  • Same behaviour as before: a throw from the installer still resets installed and still propagates unchanged to StartupHold.apply, which catches it and logs. holdUntilJs still sets held only after the install returns, so a failed hold is not reported as held.
  • Not caught by finally: ok is set only after installer.accept returns, so finally runs on every exit path. That includes an Error such as LinkageError, the same set the old RuntimeException | Error catch covered. Checked exceptions cannot occur here, because the installer is a Consumer.
  • Earlier tests still apply: the existing "installer throws once, then the next setEnabled(true) installs" tests exercise this same path, so no new test is needed.

Earlier findings: all are fixed or withdrawn. That covers the no-RN watchdog, the autoLaunch wording, the stale installed flag, and the reload semantics in the README. CodeRabbit withdrew its ensureInstalled finding after the device check.

Overall risk: Low. The change is opt-in, and the only default-on behaviour is the registerWrapper() call in attach().

Merge recommendation: Approve, merging after #161. I have no blocking findings.

Most important issues to fix

  1. None. The only optional item is the provider's watchdog wiring test coverage, which I mentioned last time.

Positives

  • The refactor keeps the behaviour and meets the repo's own lint rule.
  • The README is back to wrapped lines.

🟡 Minor · Install the log filter before publishing the held state. · LogFilterBridge.java:218-222

packages/react-native/android/src/main/java/com/bugsee/reactnative/LogFilterBridge.java:218-222
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Install the log filter before publishing the held state.

If installer.install(filter) throws, StartupHold.apply() catches the exception, but LogFilterBridge still reports itself as held. Pre-JavaScript logs can then bypass the uninstalled filter. For a log-only selection, no watchdog starts. For a mixed selection, the watchdog can incorrectly report log as still held.

Move ensureInstalled() before the state updates, or roll back both flags when installation fails.

Suggested fix
    void holdUntilJs() {
+       ensureInstalled();
        held.set(true);
        userFilter.set(true);
-       ensureInstalled();

Re-review of #162 after the latest push (merge 9587acc)

I looked at what changed since my last review (98d8110). That is one merge of origin/fix/issue-135-js-reload-filters. It brings in detach taking the state lock in the Network and Breadcrumb bridges, and a redundant sink alias removed from NetworkFilterBridge.ask. I did not run Jest, the JVM tests, lint or a device build. This comes from reading the code.

No P0, P1 or P2 issues.

New finding (1 inline, P3)

  • LogFilterBridge.java:221: holdUntilJs() sets held and userFilter before ensureInstalled(). If the SDK setter throws, isHeld() is still true. StartupHold.apply leaves log out of what it held. With ['log', 'network'], the watchdog then warns that log is "still held" 30 s later, although no hold was installed at process start. The Network and Breadcrumb bridges were fixed in e2288e0 to set held only after a successful install. The Log bridge was not. This is the point CodeRabbit raised outside the diff. It is a misleading warning, not a leak: attachModule retries the install, and the failed early window cannot be recovered from the wrapper. Fix: install first, then publish held (see the inline comment), and add a throw-once installer test as the other two bridges have.

Checked, no problem found

Earlier findings: all fixed or withdrawn, as in my last review. The one open item is the P3 above, which is the same class of bug as the one fixed in the other two bridges.

Overall risk: Low. The change is opt-in, and the only default-on behaviour is the registerWrapper() call in attach().

Merge recommendation: Approve, merging after #161. The P3 is not blocking. It is a one-line reorder and is worth doing for consistency.

Most important issue to fix

  1. Install the log filter before publishing held in LogFilterBridge.holdUntilJs, and add a test.

Positives

Re-review of #162 after the latest push (0ee6044)

I looked at what changed since my last review (9587acc): one commit, LogFilterBridge: publish the hold only after a successful install, roll back on failure. I did not run Jest, the JVM tests, lint or a device build. This comes from reading the code.

No P0, P1, P2 or P3 findings.

My earlier P3 looks fixed: LogFilterBridge.holdUntilJs() previously set held and userFilter before ensureInstalled(). It now does this:

  • It sets userFilter first, so no line can pass between the install and the filter being on.
  • It calls ensureInstalled() in a try/finally with an ok flag. If the install throws, userFilter is reset and the exception propagates to StartupHold.apply, which logs it and leaves log out of the held set.
  • It sets held only after the install succeeded.

A failed early log install is therefore no longer reported as held, so the 30 s watchdog cannot warn about a hold that was never put in place. It also matches the Network and Breadcrumb bridges.

Checked, no problem found

  • Rollback is safe: holdUntilJs runs from the init provider before any module or JS exists, so the userFilter.set(false) rollback cannot overwrite a concurrent setEnabled(true). If the install failed, no filter is installed, so pass-through is the correct state. attachModule retries the install when the module is built.

  • Constructor visibility: the three-argument LogFilterBridge(scheduler, clock, installer) constructor changed from private to package-private so tests can inject a failing installer. Production still goes through the private no-argument constructor and shared().

  • The new test: aFailedEarlyInstallIsNotReportedAsHeldAndIsRolledBack covers a throw-once installer. It checks that:

    • the exception propagates;
    • isHeld() is false;
    • a line passes through after the rollback;
    • a retry installs and holds, with 2 install attempts in total.

Its helpers (MutableLog, RecordingCallback, scheduler, and the assertSame / assertEquals imports) all exist in the file.

Earlier findings: all are fixed or withdrawn. That covers the no-RN watchdog, the autoLaunch wording, the stale installed flag in the Network and Breadcrumb bridges, the reload semantics in the README, and now the Log bridge's held ordering.

Overall risk: Low. The change is opt-in, and the only default-on behaviour is the registerWrapper() call in attach().

Merge recommendation: Approve, merging after #161. I have no blocking or non-blocking findings. The only optional item left is a test for the provider's watchdog wiring (holdFiltersEarly with StartupHold.BRIDGES), which I mentioned earlier.

Most important issues to fix

  1. None.

Positives

  • All three bridges now install first and publish held second, with a rollback test each.
  • The rollback keeps the bridge's state consistent with what is actually installed.
  • The fix is small and keeps the existing behaviour on the success path.

Re-review of #162 after the latest push (merge fb17e20)

I looked at what changed since my last review (0ee6044). That is one merge of origin/main, which now carries #161 as a squash commit together with #153–#160. I read the merged bridge code and the constructors the tests use. I did not run Jest, the JVM tests, lint or a device build, so none of this is verified by execution.

No P0, P1, P2 or P3 findings.

What the merge changed in this PR's files

Checked, no problem found

  • Constructors and tests: the old BreadcrumbFilterBridge(Consumer) constructor is gone in Filters: fail-closed 9 s deadline for iOS log/network/breadcrumb and Android breadcrumb #160. This PR's tests use new BreadcrumbFilterBridge(scheduler, System::nanoTime, installs::add) and the throw-once variant, and both match the merged three-argument constructor. The Network tests (scheduler, () -> false, installs::add) and the Log tests (scheduler, clock, installer) also match.
  • Breadcrumb hold and the deadline: holdUntilJs still runs install() and then held.set(true) inside withSdkLock, so a failed install is not reported as held. A held bridge has no armed sink, so ask drops the crumb before any deadline is scheduled. The 9 s deadline only applies once JS has armed the bridge. This is what the PR description says about Filters: fail-closed 9 s deadline for iOS log/network/breadcrumb and Android breadcrumb #160.
  • Network and Log lock use: Network.holdUntilJs runs install() and held.set(true) under stateLock. Log.holdUntilJs takes stateLock only for the userFilter writes. It calls ensureInstalled() outside the lock, so the SDK setter never runs under it. The rollback on a failed install is unchanged.
  • Release paths: setEnabled clears held only after the identity check, so a superseded module still cannot release a hold.

Earlier findings: all are fixed or withdrawn. That covers the no-RN watchdog, the autoLaunch wording, the stale installed flag, the reload semantics in the README, and the Log bridge's held ordering. The one optional item is still open: a test for the provider's watchdog wiring (holdFiltersEarly with StartupHold.BRIDGES).

Overall risk: Low. The change is opt-in, and the only default-on behaviour is the registerWrapper() call in attach().

Merge recommendation: Approve. #161 is now in main, so retarget this PR to main as the description says. I have no blocking or non-blocking findings.

Most important issues to fix

  1. None.

Positives

  • The merge combined the deadline and hold changes without conflict, and the tests compile against the merged constructors.
  • The hold still reuses the armed gate instead of adding a second mechanism.

Check that the released owner deallocates.

testAReleasedOwnerIsNotArmed passes even if BGSRNFilterArming retains gone strongly. replacement is a different object, so the assertion does not verify weak ownership. Keep a weak reference to gone and assert that it becomes nil after the autorelease pool ends.
