Summary

Restructures traces.system the way the Android/iOS SDKs do it — shared trackers → per-trace producers → a provider that is a producer container — and proves the pattern end-to-end on one node chain and one browser chain. Design: PR #53 (docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md, §14); plan: docs/design/system-traces-st0-plan.md (included here).

  • @bugsee/capture — TraceProducer / TraceProducerBase (baseline-friendly emit, emitIfChanged de-dup). createSystemTracesProvider now takes producers: per-producer start/stop isolation, a last-value refresh so a rolling capture window never loses a rarely-changing trace (the mobile SDKs re-emit a snapshot on every part switch; the JS stores have no part hook), and deriveRefreshMs. The old sample() option still works (legacy polled path).
  • @bugsee/node — ProcessStatsTracker (an InterceptorBase: one timer, attaches only on the first subscriber, releases on the last) feeding five producers via createNodeSystemTraceProducers(deps). The Bun/Deno guards are now lazy event-loop sources. New launch option systemTraceProducers.
  • @bugsee/bun / @bugsee/deno — inject the factory; Deno keeps the event-loop-lag opt-out (measuresEventLoopDelay: false).
  • @bugsee/browser / @bugsee/webview — BatteryTracker (getBattery() only on activation, abortable) + BatteryProducer. charging is now { state: 1|2|3 } (the viewer's table keys), not a boolean the viewer could never render (false was dropped by a falsy guard; true looked up states["true"]).

Behavior is otherwise unchanged: same trace names/values as the legacy samplers on all runtimes. The legacy samplers remain (cleanup is a later slice).

What this fixes by construction

Resources (delay histogram, getBattery(), timers) used to be created in sampler factories at launch. They now attach only when the provider starts a producer (so not when captureSystemTraces is false) and are released on stop().

Verification

  • pnpm ci:local --e2e green (lint, typecheck, cycles, per-package coverage, harness tests, e2e on node/bun/deno/real frameworks). Coverage 100% line/function/statement in capture, node, bun, deno, browser, webview.
  • Real-runtime check: event_loop_lag_* present on node and bun, absent on deno; ram_*/process_memory_*/cpu_usage_* present on all three.
  • Built test-first with a per-entity mutator loop (logs in the task reports). One exception, owned: Task 6 (browser battery) was written implementation+tests in one pass, with 17 mutations as the stand-in; the reviewer judged that adequate.
  • Process: subagent-driven, per-task spec+quality review, then four parallel whole-branch reviews (lifecycle, Bun/Deno honesty, browser/viewer fit, test strength) → one fix wave → scoped re-review (clean).

Real defects the reviews caught (fixed here)

  • A fabricated zero event-loop-lag baseline on every start/restart (histogram empty → NaN → 0) — now omitted until a sample exists.
  • The refresh would have frozen polled values (cpu/memory) at their last good reading with fresh timestamps after a failed poll — refresh now applies only to emitIfChanged values (a hold flag on TraceSink.emit).
  • Launch scheduler/onError never reached the tracker; an unhandled rejection after getBattery() resolved; ProcessStatsTracker activation could leave the tracker "active" with no timer.

Rulings I made on your behalf (please push back here)

  1. Parity test uses constant/per-call-constant readers, not the plan's stepping counters (exact legacy parity impossible otherwise).
  2. Bun's launch test gains the same pass-through vi.mock spy deno already had.
  3. Defaults are merged per field with ?? / conditional spreads (exactOptionalPropertyTypes is off, so an explicit undefined would clobber a default).
  4. Refresh applies only to held (emitIfChanged) values; polled families and legacy sample entries are never refreshed. Cost: a hold flag on TraceSink.emit.
  5. The lag source returns undefined until the histogram has a sample. Cost: one fewer baseline lag point per start.
  6. refreshMs floor is 2× the provider interval; a non-finite window falls back to 10 000 ms (shared deriveRefreshMs).
  7. A caller supplying systemTraceProducers/systemMetricsSampler on Bun/Deno replaces the runtime gate (an object-instance seam, same as the base branch) — documented, not blocked.
  8. systemTraceProducers is a RESET relaunch option (stateful producer instances must not be reused by the next client).
  9. onDeactivate clears the tracker timer only when one exists; the event-loop source is stopped only if this activation started it; the battery unwind removes both listeners through the one #detach().
  10. Deferred, not fixed here: sameValue JSON.stringify guard (can throw on circular/BigInt); one timestamp per poll (each value is stamped separately); a producer array shared by two clients (documented only); first ELU reading after a restart spans the stopped period; shared guard helpers duplicated until the legacy samplers are deleted.

Known limits / follow-ups (not in this PR)

  • Remaining browser traces (memory, connection, orientation, device memory) still come from the legacy sampler; follow-on slices migrate them and add a shared PageLifecycleTracker, then delete the legacy samplers, then new traces (ST1+) and Electron trackers (ST6).
  • Viewer/specs: new trace names (v8_heap_*, gc_*, …) need viewer definitions + bundle/traces.md entries before they ship.
  • A failed tracker activation recovers only after all subscribers leave (bounded, documented).
  • Re-review observation worth a look separately: on Node 24.15 a 300 ms synchronous block showed up as only ~11 ms in the next lag window (Bun showed 298 ms) — re-check the Node lag figures in CLAUDE.md before relying on lag as a "freeze" signal.

TraceSink.emit gains an optional 4th argument { hold?: boolean }. TraceProducerBase.emit sends
hold: false (polled cpu/memory/lag/ELU), emitIfChanged sends hold: true (battery/charging). The
provider keeps a value for the refreshMs re-record ONLY when hold === true; legacy sample() rows
are never held. Before, a tracker whose poll threw stopped emitting and the provider re-recorded
the last good cpu/memory value every refreshMs — a flat, fabricated line.

… whose reset() failed

Right after enable()+reset() the delay histogram has no samples (mean NaN, max 0, p99 ~0), and the
producer baseline read it as a 0 ms 'healthy loop' on every start/restart. read() now returns
undefined until the histogram has sampled (count === 0 when exposed, else a non-finite mean), so the
lag traces are omitted at the baseline. A start whose enable() succeeded but reset() threw now
disables the histogram before dropping it.

InterceptorBase marks the tracker active (with the subscriber registered) before onActivate runs, so a
throwing cpuUsage()/monotonicNowMs()/eventLoop.start()/scheduler.setInterval left an 'active' tracker
with no timer and threw out of on(), leaking the producer's listener. onActivate now reports the
failure via onError, clears the timer and stops the event-loop source only if it started; the
next activation retries.

…-trace tracker

createNodeSystemTraceProducers() was called with no scheduler/onError, so the shared tracker's sampling
timer ignored an injected options.scheduler (always a real timer) and its poll errors were swallowed.
Node, Bun and Deno launches now forward options.scheduler / options.onError into the factory when
defined (Bun/Deno keep the factory call before ...options; Deno keeps measuresEventLoopDelay: false).

…ves; report via onError

The try/catch covered only the synchronous getBattery() call, so a throwing addEventListener or a
throwing level/charging getter inside the fulfilment rejected a promise nobody handled. The whole
fulfilment is now guarded: on failure the listeners are detached, no baseline is kept, onError is
called and the next activation retries. A later change event whose getter throws is reported rather
than thrown into the BatteryManager dispatch, and the deactivation removal is best-effort.
createBrowserSystemTraceProducers(env?, onError?) forwards onError to the tracker; browser and webview
launches pass options.onError.

… one shared deriveRefreshMs

- a throwing legacy sample() inside a tick is isolated and reported, so the held-value refresh on the
same tick still runs (browser/webview pass both sample and producers)
- a throwing scheduler.setInterval on start unwinds exactly like a failed initial sample (producers
  stopped, not running, rethrown)
- a tick that slips past stop() returns immediately
- refreshMs is derived by ONE helper, deriveRefreshMs(recordingWindowMs) in @bugsee/capture: a quarter
  of the window clamped to [2 x the 1 s provider interval, 10 s], and a non-finite / non-positive
window falls back to 10 s. Node, browser and webview launches use it (the floor was 1 s, which
re-recorded a held value on every other tick).

Tests: deriveRefreshMs table, provider hardening, the refresh clamp it.each now also on browser
(battery producer) and webview launches, and one timer / one clearInterval per start/stop.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
…l regressions through

- node: a CPU producer test with distinct non-zero user/system/wall steps pins each name to its value
and the %; the legacy-parity test now uses per-call constant increments (a real, non-zero window on
both sides) instead of a constant reader whose deltas were all zero
- ProcessStatsTracker: the fake scheduler hands out unique handles and clearInterval must receive a
live one (a dropped / nulled handle fails); the real-timer 40 ms wait is replaced by fake timers with
an after-unsubscribe silence check. Deactivation no longer clears a timer a failed activation never
  registered.
- webview: battery/charging asserted on parsed entries (toContainEqual), not substrings
- bun/deno: the factory spy is cleared before every test; the bun opt-out test asserts one call and
its argument; a captureSystemTraces:false gate test for both (no sampling timer, no entries)
- node: the gate test runs for both lag-measured and lag-opted-out producers and asserts the tracker
registers no timer while disabled and exactly one when enabled
- browser: the vacuous never-started provider test is removed; the restart test is retitled and
  asserts the re-fetch

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
…launch RESET note

- PROGRESS.md: the browser sampler no longer emits battery/charging (BatteryTracker does); the node and
table lines describe the producers as the default and the legacy samplers as overrides; the guarded
sampler is no longer what Bun/Deno launch with; the ST0′ paragraph adds the Bun/Deno wiring, the
webview adoption, the systemTraceProducers option (RESET on relaunch), held-only refresh with
  deriveRefreshMs, and the no-fabricated-lag-baseline rule
- @bugsee/bun and @bugsee/deno barrels: they default the trace producers, not a system-metrics sampler
- systemTraceProducers JSDoc: per-launch only (stateful producers), and on Bun/Deno a caller-supplied
set replaces the runtime gates (e.g. Deno's lag opt-out)
- relaunch-options.test.ts: why systemTraceProducers is RESET

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • System traces report process and system memory, CPU, and available event-loop metrics across Node, Bun, and Deno.
    • Browser and WebView captures include battery level and charging status, updated as battery state changes.
    • Node launch options support custom system-trace producers, while the legacy metrics sampler remains available as an override.
    • Held trace values refresh during longer recordings, and errors are reported through the configured error handler.
  • Documentation
    • Updated progress and design documentation to describe system traces and runtime behavior.

The change adds trace producer and sink contracts and updates the capture provider to support producers alongside legacy polling. The provider refreshes held values and isolates producer errors. Node producers share a process statistics tracker and use guarded event-loop sources. Browser battery traces move from the legacy sampler to an event-driven tracker and producer. Node, Bun, Deno, browser, and WebView launch paths configure trace producers. Tests cover lifecycle, errors, refresh, and runtime wiring.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d0c23

The change preserves existing capture controls and page-facing restrictions. No new attacker-reachable capability was established in the reviewed paths. Residual risk comes from cross-runtime lifecycle changes and incomplete failure-path and compatibility coverage.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The reviewed built-in sources collect process memory and CPU statistics, host memory totals, optional event-loop measurements, and browser battery state. Their resource ownership is local to the tracker and provider lifecycle; these reads do not carry tenant identity.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The new Node producer override is an application-controlled code-extension seam, not an established remote entrypoint. The existing sampler already accepted application-supplied values. WebView continues to strip its sampler and other injectable seams from page-facing launch, and its producer list is internally constructed.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The Node tracker unwinds a successfully started event-loop source if timer creation fails and retries failed activation before returning a producer baseline. The shipped guarded source attempts cleanup after partial initialization and omits unavailable measurements rather than fabricating healthy values. These controls do not establish atomic cleanup for arbitrary injected sources.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider containing diagnostic-callback exceptions and defining failure-safe cleanup obligations for injected event-loop sources. This would strengthen shutdown containment when trusted extensions violate their callback contracts; it is not a verified attacker-reachable vulnerability.

A one-time cpuUsage()/monotonicNowMs()/setInterval failure at activation was reported and
unwound, but the producer stayed subscribed to a tracker with no timer, so the traces went
silent until every subscriber left. The failure is now remembered; the next current() (the
producer's baseline read) retries activation and propagates a second failure, which the
provider isolates and unwinds. Deactivation clears the pending failure.
