Throwaway PR to check that the Claude PR review runs. It makes InputNotFound fall back to the in-language uploader, which contradicts the exit-code contract in CLAUDE.md, so the review should flag it.

Do not merge. Close it once the review has been checked.

Generated by Claude Code

Makes a missing input file fall back to the in-language uploader. This is
a deliberately questionable change, only there to give the review something
to look at.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Input-not-found errors now trigger the same fallback behavior as unexpected errors and usage errors. Other exit codes continue to follow the existing behavior.

ExitCode::should_fallback now returns true for InputNotFound, in addition to Unexpected and Usage. Other exit codes remain excluded.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to bde8f

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to bde8f

Missing-input and no-debug-symbol failures would now trigger the in-language uploader fallback. Users would not see the actionable guidance they are meant to receive. The change contradicts the documented exit-code contract and should not be merged as is.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 18c00

The fallback policy now contradicts the documented handling of missing input. However, the executable does not invoke this helper, numeric exit codes remain unchanged, and authentication and build-gate failures remain excluded. No security-control bypass is demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · observed: The helper now permits fallback for InputNotFound even though the documented integration contract requires input failures to remain terminal. This changes the declared failure-containment policy without changing its documentation or expectations. The contradiction is observed; an actual downstream fallback or security bypass is not demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Any new upload-side exposure would require a consumer to adopt the changed fallback rule. The repository demonstrates a policy contradiction, not an executable fallback path; exposure across external integrations, credentials, assets, or tenants remains unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing separation between input failures, rejected application tokens, and deliberate build-gate failures is preserved in error classification. Only the input-failure category gains fallback eligibility in the helper; token rejection and gate failure remain excluded.

Keep InputNotFound out of fallback codes.

This change makes fallback_only_on_structural_failures fail because it expects InputNotFound.should_fallback() to be false. It also breaks the documented integrator contract: the Rust no-symbols flow returns actionable build-setting guidance, which callers must surface instead of invoking the in-language uploader. Remove InputNotFound from this match. The Rust no-symbols expectation is documented in tests/debug_files_flags.rs.

PR review summary

  • Read the PR diff and CLAUDE.md
  • Checked callers: error.rs, debug_files_flags.rs and the unit tests
  • Posted the finding inline on src/exit_code.rs:66

Scope: One file, src/exit_code.rs (+4/-1). It adds ExitCode::InputNotFound to should_fallback().

Findings

# Severity Location Issue
1 P1 High src/exit_code.rs:66 InputNotFound (10) is now a fallback code. This breaks the stable exit-code contract, which says only 1 and 2 mean fall back. Error::Io also maps to 10 (src/error.rs:68), so any I/O error would trigger the in-language fallback, and the Rust no-symbols guidance would be lost.

The existing unit test fallback_only_on_structural_failures asserts !InputNotFound.should_fallback(), so it fails with this change. I did not run cargo test. This comes from reading the code.

CodeRabbit raised the same line earlier. My comment adds the Error::Io impact. The earlier Claude run errored out, so this is the first review from this workflow.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: High for the change as written. It is a contract break that the repo's own test catches.
  2. Merge recommendation: Do not merge. The PR body already says this is a throwaway.
  3. Most important issue to fix: Revert to matches!(self, ExitCode::Unexpected | ExitCode::Usage). If a fallback case is really needed, add a new code in the structural range.
  4. Positives: The unit test and the module docs both state the contract, so the regression is caught and easy to see.

Severity: P1 High
Location: src/exit_code.rs:66 (ExitCode::should_fallback)

Problem: InputNotFound (10) is added to the fallback set. This contradicts the contract in the module docs (lines 15 and 21-24) and in CLAUDE.md: codes 1/2 are structural and mean fall back, while 10-39 are substantive failures and mean no fallback. The change also leaves the module table saying 10-19 is "no" fallback, and it breaks the existing unit test fallback_only_on_structural_failures (src/exit_code.rs:81, assert!(!ExitCode::InputNotFound.should_fallback())).

Impact: The breadth is bigger than "file not found". Error::Io(_) also maps to ExitCode::InputNotFound (src/error.rs:68), so permission errors, broken pipes, disk-read failures and the Rust "no debug symbols" diagnostic all become fallback triggers. Integrators that re-derive this rule (Gradle plugin, fastlane agents) would re-run the in-language uploader on inputs it cannot read either. That adds time and confusing logs, and it hides the actionable build-setting guidance that tests/debug_files_flags.rs:133 (rust_with_no_symbols_reports_the_build_settings_to_fix) pins for exit 10.

Scenario: bugsee-cli debug-files upload --type rust <dir-with-no-symbols> exits 10 with the "debug = 1 / split-debuginfo / --build-id" hint. An integrator that follows should_fallback discards that message and falls back to its own path, which also finds nothing.

Fix: Revert to matches!(self, ExitCode::Unexpected | ExitCode::Usage). If some specific missing-input case really needs a fallback, add a new code in the structural range rather than repurposing 10. This matches the "add new codes, never repurpose old ones" rule in CLAUDE.md.

(CodeRabbit flagged the same line. This comment adds the Error::Io blast radius.)

PR review (re-run on bde8ffe)

  • Read the PR diff, CLAUDE.md and the earlier reviews on this PR
  • Checked what changed since the last review
  • Ran the exit_code unit tests
  • Posted the summary (no new inline comments, see below)

Since the last review: bde8ffe is an empty commit ("retrigger the Claude review after the token update"). The diff is the same as at 18c00ff: one change in src/exit_code.rs that adds ExitCode::InputNotFound to should_fallback().

Findings

The one real issue is already posted inline on src/exit_code.rs:66 (P1 High), so I have not posted it again. In short: exit code 10 now means "fall back". That breaks the stable exit-code contract (only 1 and 2 mean fall back). It also covers every Error::Io (src/error.rs:68), and it would hide the Rust no-symbols build-setting guidance that integrators are meant to show. The earlier finding is not fixed by the latest commit.

New in this run: I ran the test. Last time the test failure was only inferred from reading the code. Running cargo test --bin bugsee-cli exit_code now confirms it:

test exit_code::tests::numeric_values_match_documented_contract ... ok
test exit_code::tests::fallback_only_on_structural_failures ... FAILED
panicked at src/exit_code.rs:81:9:
assertion failed: !ExitCode::InputNotFound.should_fallback()

So CI's cargo test should go red on this PR. I did not run clippy, fmt, or the rest of the test suite.

I found nothing else. The change is three lines, and should_fallback has no callers inside the binary (#[allow(dead_code)]). Its only effect is on the contract that integrators re-derive.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: High as written: it breaks a public contract, and the repo's own test fails.
  2. Merge recommendation: Do not merge. The PR is a throwaway, as its description says; close it once the review check is done.
  3. Most important fix: Change it back to matches!(self, ExitCode::Unexpected | ExitCode::Usage). If a missing-input case really needs a fallback, add a new code in the structural range instead of reusing 10.
  4. Positives: The contract is stated in three places (the module doc table, CLAUDE.md, and the unit test), so this regression gets caught right away.
