A tab in one local filename made Proton put -r refuse the entire tree before uploading any file. Both Proton modes shared a control-character ban stricter than Proton itself. Use Proton's raw-name contract for non-NUL C0, DEL and C1 characters; preserve literal Unicode control pictures instead of interpreting them as rclone encodings. NUL remains refused.

Recursive Proton uploads partition rejected entries by default and continue valid siblings. Rejected directories remove their descendants from the creation plan. Skipped-file and admitted-byte accounting stay accurate, and a directory-only rejection reports partial with exit 4. GUI file batches delegate name checks to per-item executors. Bulk downloads read existing remote names without applying upload creation rules. Permanent and uncertain native-bulk outcomes retain their existing retry behavior. Rejected upload names are permanent refusals for text-mode retries, preventing successful siblings from being uploaded again while genuine transfer failures still permit retries. Eleven focused CLI retry, listing and isolation tests passed.

Coverage: CLI native and external-CLI recursive uploads share the partition and final status; GUI file/folder upload executors and AeroSync/AeroCloud bulks share per-item checks; MCP upload tools and tree destination validation use the same Proton filename policy. Provider-independent argument/security checks remain in force. Added MCP coverage accepts a tab while isolating an invalid sibling.

Evidence: official Proton Drive CLI 0.9.0 stored all 64 non-NUL C0/DEL/C1 test names verbatim, checked through JSON listing (64 files, 104 bytes). Raw names match the official/web namespace and avoid corrupting literal replacement symbols. The documented choice differs from rclone's configurable reversible encoding.

Validation: red-first regressions reproduced the failures. Green checks include 213 Proton library tests, 16 restricted-character tests, 18 shared-bulk tests, 12 existing MCP upload_many tests, the added MCP Proton and bulk-isolation tests, and 26 recursive CLI tests plus subtree partition tests. Rust formatting and Clippy on lib/tests/bins with -D warnings passed.

Bounded live recheck: the original edge2 fixture (9 files, 435 bytes, empty directory), one upload per mode at least 60 seconds apart. Native and CLI both returned ok, uploaded 9, skipped 0, errors []. Official JSON listing confirmed all exact names, including tab and trailing space, plus the empty directory. Independent official-client readback matched all 9 contents in both modes; its local filename rewrites were mapped only after proving no collisions. The original SHA-1 verifier reported 9 matches and zero corrupt/missing/extra files for both. Targeted AeroFTP downloads of the tab-containing name also matched in both modes.

Windows test-fixture correction: after accepting a legacy initialize, the MCP test peer now validates requests and shapes replies using the negotiated protocol. A forced fallback regression reproduced the Windows cancellation failure before the fix. All 11 transport tests passed, including cancellation without result/restart in modern and fallback sessions; direct wire checks also preserve strict modern metadata validation. Production transport code and timeouts are unchanged.

Includes the filename-preservation commit from #1428; merge #1428 first. This PR targets main so the complete GitHub Actions matrix runs. No merge or release is performed here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Proton transfers preserve leading and trailing whitespace and supported control characters in filenames. Downloads retain these names; filenames containing a NUL character remain unsupported.
    • Bulk uploads continue with valid files when an individual filename is restricted, rather than stopping the entire batch. Invalid upload names are reported individually.
    • Bulk downloads can include existing remote filenames with control characters.
  • New Features
    • Recursive Proton uploads skip restricted files and directories, report refused items, and indicate partial failures in the command’s result. Text error output sanitizes filenames.
    • Proton uploads can proceed with eligible files when other targets have restricted names. Runs with only skipped files return a distinct result code.

Walkthrough

Proton filename handling now preserves non-NUL control characters and whitespace. Upload batches isolate invalid paths, while downloads accept existing raw names. Recursive uploads screen restricted targets and report outcomes by transfer state. MCP cancellation tests cover fallback negotiation and child shutdown.

Changes: Proton raw-name transfer behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Raw filename policy and provider paths
src-tauri/src/restricted_chars.rs, src-tauri/src/providers/proton.rs, src-tauri/src/providers/proton_native/provider.rs
Proton validation accepts non-NUL control characters, and path resolution preserves whitespace. Tests cover raw names through listing, upload, rename, and download.
Per-path upload validation and bulk transfer
src-tauri/src/provider_transfer_executor.rs, src-tauri/src/provider_commands.rs, src-tauri/src/transfer_bulk.rs, src-tauri/src/ai_core/remote_tools.rs, docs/PROVIDER-BULK-TRANSFERS.md
Upload paths are validated individually, and invalid entries do not prevent valid siblings from reaching provider uploads. Downloads pass existing remote names through without upload-path validation. Documentation describes Proton filename compatibility and bounded correctness checks.
Recursive upload screening and outcomes
src-tauri/src/bin/aeroftp_cli.rs
Recursive uploads screen restricted targets, prune descendants of rejected directories, report screened-file totals, sanitize text output, and select exit codes based on errors and transfer state.

MCP fallback cancellation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fallback negotiation and cancellation teardown
src-tauri/tests/fixtures/mcp_stdio_fixture.mjs, src-tauri/src/mcp_client_transport.rs
The fixture returns an unsupported-method error for discovery and uses legacy result formats after initialization. Tests cover modern and fallback modes and verify child exit and session teardown.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(proton): accept raw names and isolate rejected uploads" matches the main changes. The changeset lets Proton accept raw names with control characters except NUL, and it isolates rejected uploads so valid siblings in recursive and bulk uploads still proceed. The title names both primary changes. It does not mention the CLI exit-code changes, the MCP transport test changes, or the documentation update, but the PR objectives describe those as supporting work, so the title does not need to cover them.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 7.14% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 14 functions across 8 files. A modern fixture can accept legacy initialize after a slow discovery probe, then incorrectly reject the negotiated session's requests for missing modern metadata. Honor initialize when validating requests and shaping replies. Force the same fallback with a method-not-found probe response and verify cancellation still tears down the peer without a result or restart.

Sanitize recursive transfer errors before printing them.

Proton admits ESC in filenames. If a recursive --no-clobber check cannot verify the destination, the code includes the raw remote path in the error. The error then reaches text-mode output. An ESC sequence such as ESC[2J can alter terminal output.

Sanitize only the displayed error. Keep the raw transfer name unchanged.

Suggested fix
-                    eprintln!("  Error: {}", err);
+                    eprintln!("  Error: {}", sanitize_filename(&err));

Assert that the rejected item has a result entry.

Addressed both findings from review 5683864893 in f7107f7. These comments are in the review body without inline threads, so replying here.

  • Recursive and glob upload error summaries now sanitize only the displayed text through sanitize_filename. Provider paths, stored errors, JSON output and provider-specific encoding remain unchanged.
  • A subprocess regression reproduced the raw ESC[2J leak before the fix. It now passes recursive/glob uploads in both text and JSON modes, verifies terminal output has no ESC, checks exact raw JSON paths, and confirms the provider receives the original remote directory.
  • The MCP invalid-sibling test now checks exactly one failed result with a string error, all four result entries, and the rejected item's original position, alongside its existing summary and successful-upload checks.

Validation: 7 focused tests passed (2 batch tests, 3 sanitizer tests, existing glob error-output test, MCP invalid-sibling test), plus cargo fmt --all -- --check and git diff --check.

@coderabbitai please verify both fixes and confirm in a reply.

@axpnet Verified both fixes by source inspection at f7107f7.

  • Terminal output: Recursive and glob upload error summaries now call sanitize_filename only when rendering text. Raw provider paths, stored errors, JSON output, and provider-specific encoding remain unchanged. The new subprocess regression covers both upload modes in text and JSON formats.
  • MCP results: The invalid-sibling test now requires four result entries, exactly one failed entry at the original index, and a string error. It retains the summary and successful-upload checks.

Both findings are addressed. git diff --check passed. I did not rerun tests or cargo fmt because this sandbox does not permit execution of repository code.

Sanitize the recursive directory-creation error in text mode.

The PR now admits Proton destinations containing terminal escape characters by default. If remote ancestor creation fails, the recursive path passes the raw ancestor to print_error, whose text branch prints it directly. Sanitize only that text branch so JSON retains the raw error.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Sanitize the filename used by the progress bar.

cmd_put derives filename from the local basename and passes it to create_progress_bar. That helper calls pb.set_message(filename.to_string()) without sanitization.

For a default remote target, cmd_put also derives raw_remote from this local filename. The head now accepts an ESC in that remote leaf, whereas the base rejected it. The upload can therefore reach the progress bar and emit the escape sequence to the terminal. An explicit safe remote target could already expose the local-name case before this PR, so the new reachability applies specifically when the local name enters the validated remote target.

Sanitize only the progress-bar message. Keep the raw filename for local and remote file operations.

Follow-up to review 5686250996: both outside-diff findings are addressed in 923afe3. These findings have no inline threads, so replying here.

  • print_error now sanitizes its text branch, including ancestor-creation diagnostics. Its JSON branch retains the original error string and code.
  • The file progress-bar message now sanitizes the displayed filename. Local/remote file-operation names remain untouched. The existing color/TTY decision is passed into the constructor so its visible-message branch can be tested deterministically without changing global terminal state.

Both new display-boundary tests failed before the fix with a raw ESC[2J sequence, then passed. The error-output test also verifies the exact raw JSON payload. The shared MCP child-exit test improvement requested on #1428 is included here too.

Validation: 9 focused CLI tests and all 11 MCP transport tests passed (20 total), plus cargo fmt --all -- --check and git diff --check.

@coderabbitai please verify both findings are fully addressed and confirm in a reply. Merge remains gated on resolved review findings and green CI for the new head.

@axpnet Verified both findings as addressed by source inspection at current head 923afe32.

  • Error output: print_error sanitizes only its text branch. This covers recursive ancestor-creation diagnostics. The JSON branch preserves the original error string and code.
  • Progress-bar output: The progress-bar message uses sanitize_filename. The fix does not change local or remote file-operation names. The constructor still uses the existing use_color() decision.
  • Regression coverage: The new tests check removal of ESC[2J from both display paths and preservation of the exact decoded JSON error and code. The progress-bar test selects the message-setting branch without changing global terminal state.

git diff --check passed. I did not run tests or formatting because this sandbox does not permit execution of repository code.

The CI merge gate remains pending. Several checks for 923afe32 were still running or queued when inspected. Wait for all required checks to pass before merging. This confirmation covers the two findings from review 5686250996, not all PR findings.
