Problem

A test send that the email worker declines still reads as a success in the workflow UI.
A user who sends a test to a suppressed address, from a paused workflow or a suspended project, or to an opted-out or address-less recipient sees "Test email sent" in the template modal, or "Success" in the workflow editor's email step.
Nothing arrives, and nothing says why.
This hits users while they set up their first email, so it holds back Workflows activation.

Refs Silthus/personal#204. Replaces the frontend half of #591, which is split by lane. Stacked on #626, which makes the test endpoint report the skip.

  • Changes test-result copy in the template modal and the two editor test panes. Worst case is wrong test-result copy (cosmetic), for teams that test email steps.
  • Safe alone: without fix(cdp): record why a test email to a recipient without an address was skipped #626 the email pane keeps showing "Success", and the modal already handled skipped.
  • No feature flag: the fix applies to every sender. Covered by logic and helper tests; a revert fully undoes it.

Warning

Land bottom-first: #626, then merge master into this branch, then this PR. The lane check diffs a stacked PR against master, so it counts #626's nodejs/ files here and fails until #626 lands. Do not queue the whole stack at once.

Changes

  • Send test email modal: a skipped send keeps the modal open with a warning that shows the worker's reason, for example "Skipping send: recipient is on the suppression list.", instead of closing with "Test email sent". Before, a skip that did reach the modal showed every log line joined together.
  • Email step test pane: the banner turns yellow and shows the same reason instead of "Success". Go to next step still works.
  • Other step test pane: same copy as before. It now reads its message from the same shared helper.
  • Mechanical: getHogFlowTestResultMessage / emailSkipReason helper shared by both panes and the modal logic.

Changed production lines: 50 (git diff --numstat, tests and typegen excluded).

How did you test this code?

Lane gate on 8700c3be0a6: frontend typecheck clean, oxlint/oxfmt clean on changed files, hogli ci:preflight --strict no failures on push, touched suites green (messageTemplateTestSendLogic.test.ts and the editor testing/ tests). Fork CI cannot run (missing GitHub App secret), recorded as a gap.

Test seams, each red on master code and green on this branch:

  • Modal logic (messageTemplateTestSendLogic.test.ts): extends the skipped-send case; testSendSkipMessage returns the worker's reason, not the joined logs.
  • Result message helper (getHogFlowTestResultMessage.test.ts, new, no prior test): success, error, email skip with reason, skip without reason, and trigger mismatch.

UI walk from #591 on a seeded preview with both halves, screenshots above. The tree at this head is byte-identical to #591's, so the walk carries over. Not walked: the other-step pane, because the preview could not load a trigger test event. Its copy is unchanged and the helper test covers it. No before screenshots; the red tests show master's behavior.

Test rationale: each test catches a reason that fails to reach the user. The modal test extends the nearest existing case. The helper test is new because nothing covered the panes' message.

What the toolbar ships to customer pages, measured from the esbuild output (minified, post-tree-shake). The eager set is the entry plus everything statically imported from it — fetched before any feature runs; deferred chunks load lazily. The eager guardrail is 5.72 MiB. Each output file must also stay below 10 MB, where CloudFront stops compressing it. The module boundary is enforced separately by check-toolbar-graph.

Replaced by PostHog#123846, which fixes the same skipped test send on three surfaces without a Node change. #626 keeps only the missing-recipient reason that PostHog#123846 needs. Tracked in Silthus/personal#71.
