Problem

A test send that the email worker declines still reports success.
A user who sends a test to a suppressed address, from a paused workflow or a suspended project, or to an opted-out or address-less recipient sees "Test email sent" in the template modal, or "Success" in the workflow editor's email step.
Nothing arrives, and nothing says why.
This hits users while they set up their first email, so it holds back Workflows activation.

  • Changes how the editor's test endpoint labels an email step the worker skipped (success → skipped). Real workflow sends take a different path and are unaffected. Worst case is wrong test-result copy (cosmetic), for teams that test email steps.
  • No feature flag: the fix applies to every sender. Covered by endpoint, worker, logic and helper tests; a revert fully undoes it.

Changes

  • Send test email modal: a skipped send keeps the modal open with a warning that shows the worker's reason, for example "Skipping send: recipient is on the suppression list.", instead of closing with "Test email sent". Before, a skip that did reach the modal showed every log line joined together.
  • Email step test pane: the banner turns yellow and shows the same reason instead of "Success". Go to next step still works.
  • Other step test pane: same copy as before. It now reads its message from the same shared helper.
  • Test invocation endpoint (Node): returns status: 'skipped' when the email step's emailSendResult is skipped. nextActionId still points at the next step.
  • Missing recipient: the worker now records its skip reason in emailSendResult, like the other skip paths.
  • Mechanical: getHogFlowTestResultMessage / emailSkipReason helper shared by both panes and the modal logic.

Changed production lines: 59 (git diff --numstat, tests and typegen excluded).

How did you test this code?

Lane gate on 9afd0ef864d: frontend and Node typechecks clean, oxfmt/oxlint/prettier/eslint clean on changed files, hogli ci:preflight --strict no failures, touched suites green (cdp-api.serial.test.ts, email.service.test.ts, hog_function.test.ts, messageTemplateTestSendLogic.test.ts, the editor testing/ tests). Fork CI cannot run (missing GitHub App secret), recorded as a gap.

Test seams, each red on master code and green on this branch:

  • Test invocation endpoint (cdp-api.serial.test.ts): the existing inline-email case asserted success for a skipped outcome; that row now expects skipped, with nextActionId unchanged. Red on master: Expected "skipped", Received "success".
  • Email worker (email.service.test.ts): extends the missing-recipient case to expect a skipped emailSendResult with its reason. Red on master: Received: undefined.
  • Modal logic (messageTemplateTestSendLogic.test.ts): extends the skipped-send case; testSendSkipMessage returns the worker's reason, not the joined logs.
  • Result message helper (getHogFlowTestResultMessage.test.ts, new, no prior test): success, error, email skip with reason, skip without reason, and trigger mismatch.

Live run on a seeded preview of this branch (verified sender, one suppressed address), through POST /api/projects/:id/hog_flows/new/invocations/:

UI walk on the same preview: the modal and the email step pane, screenshots above. Not walked: the other-step pane, because the preview could not load a trigger test event. Its copy is unchanged and the helper test covers it. No before screenshots; the red tests show master's behavior.

Test rationale: each test catches a status or reason that fails to reach the user. Three extend the nearest existing case. The helper test is new because nothing covered the panes' message.

The test invocation endpoint now reports `skipped` when the email step
was skipped, and keeps the next step for step-through. The modal and both
editor panes show the worker's skip reason. A recipient without an email
address now records its reason like the other skips.

What the toolbar ships to customer pages, measured from the esbuild output (minified, post-tree-shake). The eager set is the entry plus everything statically imported from it — fetched before any feature runs; deferred chunks load lazily. The eager guardrail is 5.72 MiB. Each output file must also stay below 10 MB, where CloudFront stops compressing it. The module boundary is enforced separately by check-toolbar-graph.
