Problem

A person who opens the domain setup from a workflow with no sender creates a sender there. Back in the workflow, the email step still has no sender, so they must pick it by hand before they can enable the workflow.

This is a slice of "send once verified" (Silthus/personal#197), stacked on #619.

Warning

🟡 Merge risk: medium · two-way door (merge-risk rubric)

  • The riskiest part is the workflow save path, which every project uses: each save now keeps its own edit version, and the save queue holds the newest deferred server event instead of the last one to arrive.
  • The sender fill itself runs only from the flagged domain setup, and fills only email steps without a sender.
  • The worst case is a lost edit or a stale canvas after a save. No backend change, no migration.
  • This PR lands together with the slices below and above it in one merge-queue batch.

Changes

  • Sender filled from the setup. A sender created in the domain setup fills every email step that has none. With auto-save on, the workflow saves at once. With auto-save off, the setup asks the person to save first. The setup then says "Your workflow now sends from hello@example.com." and offers Enable in the same step.
  • Email steps that already have a sender keep it.
  • The fill captures email sender preselected with surface: workflow and reason: created_in_domain_setup.
  • Save path. Each save records the edit version it started from. A second save dispatched while one is in flight no longer moves the first save's version, so edits made during a save survive it.
  • Save queue. A deferred server event that arrives out of order no longer replaces a newer one.
  • Mechanical: autoSaveWorkflow waits, then calls the new flushAutoSave, which the fill calls directly. EmailDomainSetupModal gains onSenderCreated.

The fill line is new, so there is no before. Taken on a seeded preview of the stack top, with the domain status answered in the browser because the local stack has no SES. The walk log is in proof storage.

Production lines: 68 (+56 −12) with inline kea typegen, against the base branch, by git diff --numstat. Tests and stories are excluded.

Together with the slices around it, replaces PostHog#123661.

How did you test this code?

  • Lane gate on HEAD: frontend typecheck clean, every Jest suite under products/workflows/frontend passed, oxlint and oxfmt clean on the changed files, and the pre-push hogli ci:preflight --strict hook passed.
  • Red → green: each new case failed on the base branch and passes on HEAD.

Test rationale:

  • WorkflowSenderDomainSetupModal.test.tsx: a sender created in the setup fills the empty step, saves it, and the workflow enables in one step.
  • workflowLogic.sendOnceVerified.test.ts: the fill changes only steps without a sender and saves them with the unsaved edits; it leaves a workflow alone whose steps have one sender or a sender rotation; it keeps the fill when it saves behind an earlier save and its own save fails.
  • resourceSaveQueue.test.ts: the queue hands over the newest of several deferred events, extended from the existing deferral case.

Test seams: workflowLogic against the mocked HogFlow REST API; the WorkflowSenderDomainSetupModal render test with FakeEmailDomainBackend.

CI Gap: fork CI cannot run. The lane gate ran locally and on the leased box. Fork checks are red as on #614: Semgrep cannot run without the fork secret, and the lane check diffs against master, so it counts slices lower in the stack.

Release status

  • This change is behind a feature flag and is not available to users

The fill needs workflows-email-domain-wizard. The save-path changes apply to every workflow and change no visible behavior.

A domain set up from a workflow's notice fills the email steps that have
no sender with the new sender, saves at once, and says so in the setup,
so the workflow can be enabled in the same place. Each save keeps the
edit version it was dispatched with, a held edit event never gives way
to an older copy, and a step with a sender rotation counts as having a
sender. Ported from PostHog#123661 with its tests.

What the toolbar ships to customer pages, measured from the esbuild output (minified, post-tree-shake). The eager set is the entry plus everything statically imported from it — fetched before any feature runs; deferred chunks load lazily. The eager guardrail is 5.72 MiB. Each output file must also stay below 10 MB, where CloudFront stops compressing it. The module boundary is enforced separately by check-toolbar-graph.
