Problem

The slices below let Enable save waiting_for_domain, and a background task takes the workflow active once its email domain verifies. A person with the workflow open does not see that go-live until they reload. Worse, an edit they make around the go-live can be lost: the go-live bumps updated_at, so the next auto-save gets a stale conflict and the editor reloads over the edit.

This is the third slice of "send once verified" (Silthus/personal#196), stacked on #600.

Warning

🟡 Merge risk: medium · two-way door (merge-risk rubric)

  • Changes the editor's save path: a stale-conflict retry while a workflow waits, and draft routing for a queued save. No backend change, no migration.
  • The worst case is an edit around a go-live that still meets the usual conflict banner, or a background refresh that shows a stale row. Both paths run only for waiting workflows, which exist only with workflows-email-domain-wizard on.
  • This PR lands together with the two slices below it in one merge-queue batch.

Changes

  • Editor while waiting. The editor checks the workflow's status every 10 seconds while the tab is visible, and at once when the tab shows again. When the workflow goes live, the header changes to Live without a reload. Unsaved edits stay in the form.
  • Edit around the go-live. An auto-save that meets the go-live takes its status and timestamps, then saves the edit once more to the live copy. When the workflow also changed somewhere else, the usual conflict handling runs and nothing is overwritten.
  • Queued edits. A form save queued behind the go-live stages to the live copy's draft, like any edit on a live workflow. Before, it carried the status from before the go-live.
  • Workflows list. A list that shows a waiting workflow refreshes on the same interval while the tab is visible, without the table's loading state. It stops once no row waits.
  • "workflow enabled" event. Only the save that enables a workflow can report it, and only when that save lands active. Before, a waiting enable left a flag behind, so a later save after the go-live reported it.
  • Saved baseline. Sanitizing a save copies each function step instead of rewriting its inputs in place. Before, the save stripped the compiled inputs from the saved baseline, so an auto-save that met a go-live saw a change that was not there and reloaded over the edit.
  • A failing workflow no longer drops another workflow's go-live. That backend fix landed in feat(workflows): enable waits for an unverified sender and goes live once it verifies #590; this slice has no backend change.

Production lines: 316 (+282 −34) with inline kea typegen against the base branch, by git diff --numstat. Tests are excluded; inline kea typegen is included.

Replaces part of PostHog#123660 (commits 231fe7f662f, 8a18ec1968a, ede32a6942c, d48d20fa57e, and the status refresh commits 34299c42f82, 5b8a6b62edb, 4d367f40265).

Live walk on a preview stack of this commit:

How did you test this code?

  • Lane gate on HEAD: frontend typecheck (clean, on the leased box), oxlint and oxfmt on the changed files, hogli ci:preflight --strict at push (no failures; its semgrep-devex step timed out, so CI runs it). Every Jest suite under products/workflows/frontend passed.
  • CI: fork CI cannot run here, so CI on HEAD is a recorded gap.
  • Red → green: each new case failed on the base branch and passes on HEAD (evidence in proof storage).

Test rationale:

  • workflowLogic.sendOnceVerified.test.ts (new): the go-live shows without a reload and keeps unsaved edits; a later edit stages as a draft; an auto-save that meets the go-live keeps the edit, with and without a function step, but not over an edit made elsewhere; a queued edit stages; a status answer after unmount is dropped; checks run only while the tab is visible. The closest existing tests (workflowLogic.autosave.test.ts, workflowLogic.externalEdits.test.ts) cover stale conflicts without a go-live.
  • workflowLogic.autosave.test.ts: the enable event test now also covers an enable that waits, then a save after the go-live.
  • workflowsWaitingRefreshLogic.test.ts (new): the list refreshes while a row waits and stops once none does.

Test seams: workflowLogic and workflowsWaitingRefreshLogic against the mocked HogFlow REST API, with fake timers.

Proofs (recorded with fleet proof):

Review GPT-6.1 Sol round 1: one High finding (sanitizing stripped the saved baseline's compiled inputs), fixed in 8b60abc with a red test. Final read on HEAD: no findings.
Live run On a preview stack of this commit on a leased box: the real flag, enable API, email/verify and Celery go-live task took a waiting workflow live 10 s before the editor showed it. Stubs: the DEBUG-only maildev provider stands in for the DNS check and the email provider, and the seed marks the example.com sender unverified.
UI walk Recorded on the same stack (screenshots above). The editor turned Live without a reload and kept the typed description. The auto-save landed 3 s before the go-live, so the exact save-meets-go-live race stays covered by the logic tests only.
Prod shape Gap, accepted by the standing rule until 2026-11-02.
Post-deploy watch Owed after the stack merges and deploys.
CI Gap: fork CI cannot run. The lane gate ran locally and on the leased box. Two fork checks are red: Semgrep (its path-filter job cannot run without the fork secret) and the lane check, which diffs against master and so counts a nodejs/ change from a slice lower in the stack. This slice changes no nodejs/ file. The nodejs/ line moves to #617, which lands before #590, so the lane check passes upstream.

Release status

  • This change is behind a feature flag and is not available to users

Only workflows-email-domain-wizard makes a workflow wait, so the new paths run only for flagged projects.

that enables a workflow reports "workflow enabled".

What the toolbar ships to customer pages, measured from the esbuild output (minified, post-tree-shake). The eager set is the entry plus everything statically imported from it — fetched before any feature runs; deferred chunks load lazily. The eager guardrail is 5.72 MiB. Each output file must also stay below 10 MB, where CloudFront stops compressing it. The module boundary is enforced separately by check-toolbar-graph.

Sanitizing a save rewrote each function step's inputs in place. The
form shares its steps with the saved baseline, so the baseline lost the
compiled inputs the server returns. An auto-save that met a go-live then
saw a content change that was not there and reloaded over the edit.
Sanitizing now copies the steps.
