feat(db): add user_settings table for account-wide settings (Chat) - #9155
Add a user_settings table: account-wide settings that are the same on every device and readable by the server. Its first column is experimental_chat (open new ACP agent sessions as chats), off by default.
Migration only. The router and client changes are in the stacked PR (linked below).
Why / Context
Chat is moving off the acp-chat PostHog flag to a setting people turn on themselves. It has to be account-level: a device-local switch lets desktop and mobile disagree, and the server (automations, cloud workspace starts) can't see it. The first version added a column to auth.users. Per review, settings stay off that table, which every authenticated request reads, so this PR now adds its own table instead.
Migration
CREATETABLE "user_settings" (
"user_id" uuid PRIMARY KEYNOT NULL,
"experimental_chat"boolean DEFAULT false NOT NULL,
"updated_at"timestamp with time zone DEFAULT now() NOT NULL
);
ALTERTABLE"user_settings" ADD CONSTRAINT"user_settings_user_id_users_id_fk"FOREIGN KEY ("user_id") REFERENCES"auth"."users"("id") ON DELETE cascadeONUPDATE no action;
Generated by drizzle-kit generate --name=user_settings; not hand-edited. Same shape as channel_notification_prefs (0166): user_id primary key, typed columns with defaults, no row means the defaults. Chat is therefore off for every account with no backfill.
The PR has two commits (column, then replaced by the table). The net diff is only the table. Squash on merge.
Safety checklist (.agents/skills/db-migrations)
Production sizes: user_settings is new and empty. auth.users (27 MB, ~69k rows) is only referenced by the foreign key
No column type change
Lock order: child first. The new table is created, then the foreign key takes a brief SHARE ROW EXCLUSIVE on auth.users. That lock blocks writes, not reads, and is held only while the constraint is validated against the empty table
No long ACCESS EXCLUSIVE on a hot table. auth.users is not altered
Every statement finishes well inside 60 s
Rehearsal under load: not run. The only lock on a hot table is the foreign key's brief write lock on auth.users, validated against an empty table. Applying migrations to the workspace's Neon dev branch was also blocked by the sandbox's permission check
No reads move to data that isn't there (missing row means defaults)
No tRPC input/output change in this PR
Rollout / Rollback
Merge first, and let deploy-database apply it. The stacked PR reads the table and must merge after this deploys.
Rollback: the table is unused until the stacked PR ships; dropping it needs a follow-up migration.
Account-level switch for opening new agent sessions as chat, so desktop,
mobile and server-side launches read one value. Constant-default ADD
COLUMN: metadata-only on Postgres 11+.

only still-valid issues, skip the rest with a brief reason, keep changes
minimal, and validate.

Walkthrough
Adds a user_settings table linked to auth.users, with an experimental chat flag and an update timestamp. Exports the schema and registers a migration for the table.

Adds the userSettings schema and inferred select type, exports the schema, and adds and registers the migration. The table has a default-false experimentalChat flag and a timestamp that defaults to the current time and refreshes on update. Deleting the referenced user cascades to the settings row.
Complete the migration load rehearsal and reset any preview branch that applied the earlier migration before merging.

Review verdict: looks good. No blocking findings at 3f8f2317.
packages/db/drizzle/0179_users_experimental_chat.sql:1: a single constant-default ADD COLUMN. It changes only metadata (PG 18.6), with no rewrite or scan.
packages/db/drizzle/meta/0179_snapshot.json: prevId chains to 0178, and the only change is the new column. drizzle-kit generate reports no drift.
_journal.json:1258: idx 179. The branch is level with main, so there is no number clash.
Load rehearsal (the box left unchecked): I ran it on this review workspace's production-child Neon branch (auth.users, 27 MB, 69k rows). The ALTER ran 5 times with lock_timeout=5s, each time rolled back, under 16 connections of reads and updates. Result: 5/5 passed in about 20 ms each, 0 app errors, worst query 115 ms. pgbench is not in the sandbox, so I used a Bun load generator. Details are on the page.
Question: do you want one boolean column per future experiment on hot auth.users, or one experiments jsonb column?
Per review, account settings stay off auth.users, which every
authenticated request reads. user_settings follows
channel_notification_prefs: user_id primary key, typed columns with
defaults, and no row means the defaults, so Chat stays off for every
account without a backfill.
Replaces the users.experimental_chat column from the previous commit,
which never shipped.

0179_user_settings.sql adds a foreign key that locks auth.users. The reported rehearsal covered the earlier auth.users column migration, not this statement. Run the required production-child rehearsal and clear the migration safety checklist.

Recreate the preview branch if it applied the earlier migration.
The earlier migration adds auth.users.experimental_chat. The replacement migration creates user_settings but does not remove that column. A reused preview branch can therefore retain the old column and differ from a fresh deployment. Delete and recreate the branch before deployment if it has already applied the earlier migration.
