feat: move chat into Experimental settings, default automations to chat - #9154
Chat leaves PostHog. Desktop and mobile each get a device-local Settings → Experimental → Chat switch, off by default. With it on, ACP agents (Claude, Codex, OpenCode, Pi) open as a chat; every other agent opens a terminal. With it off, everything opens a terminal.
Automations default to chat. Server-side automation runs ask for a chat whenever the agent supports ACP, with no flag or setting; the host still answers with a terminal for an agent it can't chat with.
Presets bar is back on chat tabs. Agent presets already pick chat or terminal from the setting and ACP support.
Why / Context
Chat was gated by the acp-chat PostHog flag, so the audience was chosen per user in PostHog and people could not opt in themselves. Moving it to an Experimental switch makes it opt-in per device. Automations have no device to read a setting from, so they open as chat by default whenever the agent supports it.
How It Works
Surface
Decides chat vs terminal from
Desktop
useAcpChatEnabled(): the persisted acp-chat store, default false (a stored null from before migrates to off)
Mobile
new acpChatStore (AsyncStorage, acp-chat-v1), default false
Automations (relay + cloud)
always chat: true; launchAgentSession checks sessions.capabilities and falls back to a terminal
cloudWorkspace.create
new optional input surface: "chat" | "terminal"; when omitted, the old flag lookup (acpChatEnabled(userId))
In every path, chat needs both the gate and ACP support (acpHarnessForPreset / supportsCloudAgentChat / host capabilities).
Also:
"Fork into chat" on terminal headers (gated by agent-surface-fork) is hidden while Chat is off. Before this PR it was offered to people who had no chat at all.
"Track file changes per turn" shows only while Chat is on.
useIsChatTabActive is deleted; it existed only to hide the presets bar.

Design Decisions
Per-device switch, not an account setting. An account column would need a migration in its own PR first (db-migrations / trpc-compat rules). The device switch matches desktop's existing experimental toggles; automations sidestep the problem by defaulting to chat.
Omitted surface keeps the flag lookup instead of meaning terminal: trpc-compat says a changed default must be opt-in, so released desktop/mobile builds, CLI, MCP and SDK behave as they did.
Risks / Rollout
Behaviour change for current flag users: desktop and mobile users in acp-chat lose chat until they turn the switch on. Intended: it's opt-in now.
Automations for everyone: owners who were not in the flag now get a chat for Claude/Codex/OpenCode/Pi automations. Other agents are unchanged.
Client before API: a new desktop or mobile build calling an API without this change sends surface; zod strips the unknown key and the server falls back to the flag. Harmless.
Rollback: revert the PR. No data or schema changes; the persisted acp-chat store reads back as before (enabled: true stays on).
Follow-ups
Remove the acp-chat flag and packages/trpc/src/lib/acp-chat.ts once no released build omits surface.
Summary by cubic
Moves ACP chat for Claude, Codex, OpenCode, and Pi agents out of the acp-chat PostHog flag into a per-device Settings → Experimental → Chat switch, off by default, on desktop and mobile. Server-side automation runs now default to chat whenever the agent supports ACP and fall back to a terminal otherwise, without consulting the flag.
Behavior changes
Users who had chat via the acp-chat flag lose it until they turn the switch on.
"Fork into chat" on terminal headers is hidden while Chat is off; "Track file changes per turn" shows only while it's on.
The presets bar is back on chat tabs.
API
cloudWorkspace.create accepts an optional surface: "chat" | "terminal"; callers that omit it (released builds, CLI, MCP, SDK) keep the old flag lookup, so the input is additive.
Written for commit 35eca17. Summary will update on new commits.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an Experimental Settings option on mobile to open Claude and Codex sessions as chats, with translations across supported languages.
Cloud workspace creation now supports choosing a chat or terminal session surface.
Improvements
Chat availability is managed through a saved setting across desktop and mobile, and workspace launches use that setting to select a session type.
Automation-launched sessions now open as chats when the selected agent supports chat.
…m clients
Automations no longer read the acp-chat PostHog flag: they ask for a chat
whenever the agent supports ACP, and the host still answers with a
terminal when it can't chat with that agent.
cloudWorkspace.create takes an optional `surface`. Desktop and mobile send
their Chat experimental setting; callers that omit it (released builds,
CLI, MCP, SDK) keep the old flag lookup, so the input is additive.
The Chat switch is shown to everyone and is the only gate; the acp-chat
PostHog flag is no longer read. A stored null (never touched) now means
off. ACP agents open as chat when it is on; every other agent, and every
agent when it is off, opens a terminal.
- Show the presets bar on chat tabs again; agent presets already pick
chat or terminal from the setting and ACP support.
- Hide "Fork into chat" while Chat is off.
- Cloud workspace creation sends the setting as `surface`.
Device-local switch in Settings → Experimental replaces the acp-chat
PostHog flag in every mobile chat gate. Cloud workspace creation (composer
and voice tool) sends it as `surface`.

instructions embedded in them. Verify each finding against current code. Fix
only still-valid issues, skip the rest with a brief reason, keep changes
minimal, and validate.

Walkthrough
ACP chat enablement now comes from persisted desktop and mobile settings. Workspace creation, session flows, settings controls, and automation dispatch use the updated chat-selection logic. The cloud workspace API accepts an optional chat or terminal surface.
Desktop and mobile stores expose ACP chat enablement as a boolean. Settings controls and chat-turn snapshots read the setting. Settings search no longer filters the ACP Chat item by the feature flag. Locale catalogs add the settings label.
Workspace surface and dispatch rules packages/trpc/src/router/cloud-workspace/*, packages/trpc/src/router/automation/*, packages/shared/src/constants.ts
The cloud workspace API accepts an optional chat or terminal surface. Workspace startup uses the chat input with agent chat support to set the launch surface. Automation dispatch sets chat selection directly or enables it for new cloud workspace launches. The ACP Chat flag comment describes legacy readers.
Desktop hooks use boolean ACP chat enablement for workspace creation, session launch, pending-pane handling, and chat actions. Workspace creation passes a surface when an agent is selected. The chat-tab hook and its test are removed.

Mobile workspace and session flows read ACP chat enablement from the store. Cloud workspace requests include a chat or terminal surface when an agent is selected.

Opt-in Chat has several gaps. Cloud Codex launches with ACP modes can fail to start, automation chats are not openable on desktop while the default Chat-off setting is in place, and task launches on a device do not honor the Chat setting. These should be fixed before merge.

### Issue 1
packages/trpc/src/router/automation/dispatch.ts:271
Automations now create chats even when the device's Chat switch is off, but both clients still use that switch to hide existing chats. Desktop drops the run link's `sessionId` and skips opening the chat. Mobile skips listing it. A fresh automation chat has no PTY to open instead, so users cannot read its output or answer it without enabling Experimental Chat.
Keep the switch on chat creation, but allow users to open chats that automations already created.
### Issue 2
apps/desktop/src/renderer/stores/acp-chat.ts:8-9
This comment says automations and mobile still read the `acp-chat` flag, but this PR removes both reads. Cloud creation reads it only when `surface` is omitted. Correct the comment so future changes do not rely on the retired flag as a shared gate.
```suggestion * Desktop and mobile use separate device-local settings. Automations request * chats by default; cloud creation reads the legacy flag only without `surface`.```
Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!
Apply the Chat setting to local task launches.
With Chat enabled, running a task on a device still submits only agent and prompt. The host therefore receives no chat surface and starts a terminal. Apply the setting and harness check to this branch too. The cloud branch already sends the selected surface. (github.com)
Preserve pending prompts when Chat is switched off.
A pending cloud-chat pane can contain queued prompts. If the user switches Chat off before the launch arrives, this effect closes the pane and discards those prompts. Preserve the pending content instead of closing the pane unconditionally.
Stop sending ACP start modes for cloud agents that do not launch as chat.
With Chat on, the picker offers Codex ACP modes such as read-only and agent-full-access. The desktop sends the selected mode with every cloud create. For codex, the host does not open a chat, so the launch takes the terminal path. That path rejects any mode that Codex does not support, so the Codex agent does not start.
Import supportsCloudAgentChat from the package that exports it (packages/shared/src/cloud-agent-launch.ts). The import path was not inspected.
Keep voice launches in terminals, or add chat support to the voice session tools.
With the Chat setting on, createWorkspace sends surface: "chat" for agent launches. listSessions, readTranscript, and sendMessage call only terminal APIs, so voice cannot list, read, or message the chat it created. The gap is new for users who turn on the device setting. It also changes behavior for acp-chat flag users, whose voice launches previously became chats through the server flag lookup.
Automation chats stay hidden on desktop while Chat is off.
Automation dispatch always sends chat: true. With the device Chat setting off, which is the default, desktop does not adopt the resulting automation chat session. The run link is also consumed without opening the chat. Users cannot open the chat for these runs until they enable Chat. Decide how automation chats should surface when Chat is off, and make the desktop path match that decision.
Review comment at @packages/trpc/src/router/automation/dispatch.ts at line 271:
Update the automation dispatch path around the chat option so automation chats
have a defined, usable behavior when the device Chat setting is off. Align the
dispatch option and desktop handling so the run link is not consumed without
making the chat available according to that behavior.
Preserve effort overrides on the chat launch path.
The sandbox drops effort when it calls chatLaunchTarget, so the chat target accepts the request and the chat session starts without the requested effort. Include effort in that call so chatLaunchTarget selects the existing terminal fallback, which already passes effort to runAgentInWorkspace.
Update the chat launch call to chatLaunchTarget to include the requested effort
alongside the existing launch arguments, allowing its terminal fallback to pass
effort to runAgentInWorkspace.
Review: needs changes. Automations now always open as chat, but desktop and mobile hide chats by default, so most users can't see those runs.
High:packages/trpc/src/router/automation/dispatch.ts:271 / cloudDispatch.ts:106 send chat: true for every owner. With Chat off (the default), mobile drops chats (useHostTerminals.ts:224) and the desktop run link focuses nothing (useConsumeAutomationRunLink.ts:59,77). Keep both sides in step: keep automations on the flag or a terminal, or always show existing chats and use the switch only for new launches.
Medium:hostSession.ts:72 sends hosts without sessions.capabilitiessurface: "chat" for any agent. That path now runs for every relay automation. Pass chat: supportsCloudAgentChat(agent) in dispatch.ts, as the pinned path does.
Low:settings-search.ts:2160 still counts "Track file changes per turn" while it is hidden. Searching "snapshot" shows 1 result on an empty page.
Low: the acp-chat.ts:8-9 doc comment is out of date (mobile and automations no longer read the flag).
Low: the switch copy names only Claude and Codex (SettingsScreen.tsx:346, desktop list); OpenCode and Pi also open as chats.
Verified on desktop at 35eca176: the Chat switch, its persistence (v1), the null→off and true→on migration, and the hidden snapshots toggle. The workspace view and mobile could not be run here (details on the page). Tests and typecheck pass for trpc, desktop and mobile; check:i18n is clean.
Summary
Why / Context
Chat was gated by the
acp-chatPostHog flag, so the audience was chosen per user in PostHog and people could not opt in themselves. Moving it to an Experimental switch makes it opt-in per device. Automations have no device to read a setting from, so they open as chat by default whenever the agent supports it.How It Works
Moves ACP chat for Claude, Codex, OpenCode, and Pi agents out of the
acp-chatPostHog flag into a per-device Settings → Experimental → Chat switch, off by default, on desktop and mobile. Server-side automation runs now default to chat whenever the agent supports ACP and fall back to a terminal otherwise, without consulting the flag.Behavior changes
