v110: one nightly HRV estimator, personal-quiet strain, gap-aware respiration and sleep (integrates #552 #551 #553) - #567
Conversation
All five strain sites subtracted the cost of being awake at the 0.20
HRR population reference: the pipeline headline, series.strain_curve,
the engine recompute, session/live scoring and the stored-strain
rescale. analytics made that level a required argument precisely so
callers would pass the user's own, but dailyQuietWakingHrr was never
called. That is a substituted default, and it is wrong in both
directions:
- Above 0.20, a day with no activity scores 7-12/21.
- Below 0.20 (fit users, low RHR), quiet minutes net negative against
exercise. A 45-min run at 145 bpm scored 0.00/21 for someone sitting
at 0.10 HRR, and the intraday curve climbed through the run and fell
back to 0 by bedtime.
The level:
- Each derived day measures its own level (dailyQuietWakingHrr over
>= 360 wake minutes) and persists it as `quiet_hrr`. It feeds later
days only, never the day itself.
- Strain is scored against the median of the trailing 28 prior
measured days, imports excluded. Both derive halves get the same
`valuesBefore('quiet_hrr', date)` window, so the pipeline headline,
the curve and the engine recompute cannot disagree.
- Sessions (save, retime, confirm, on-read re-score) read the same
window for the session's own local day (`personalQuietLevelBefore`).
The live gauge reads the level fresh for the session's own start day
and fills the gap (never moving a level a running session was scored
on); a resumed session's restored tally is re-scored as soon as it
lands.
- Scoring goes through analytics' strainScoreFromSeries /
strainCurveFromSeries. Minutes at or above 40 % HRR are never offset
by quiet time, and the curve's last point is the headline.
- Fewer than 3 prior levels: strain abstains with need_baseline (the
UI's "Need N more days"). 3-6 days: scored at lower confidence,
"calibrating". The 0.20 constant is no longer referenced in lib/.
- The net load above the level is persisted per day as `trimp_net`,
the input a CTL/ATL training-load read needs instead of gross TRIMP.
Keeping strain from going blank:
- One-shot `quiet_hrr_seed_v1` seeds existing installs' trailing
history from stored bundles (strain_curve's wake minutes joined to
hr_curve), off the UI isolate. It runs first in run(), ahead of
every early return, so a restored install with bundles but no 1 Hz
rows is seeded too. Without it, a version bump would re-derive only
a few days and every existing user's strain would go blank.
- A sweep prices every day on one frozen history snapshot, so a first
sync of a whole week would score every day with no level. A day whose
strain abstained on the quiet level while any earlier day exists
(unfinalized raw, or a stored level) gets a durable per-day
`quiet_repass:<date>` marker, written before its row. While marked,
the day is never finalized, so the raw prune holds it like any
unfinished day. Every run()/runDays() re-derives marked days that now
have a level, before the prune (held while a timezone change is
suspected, like the rescan). The marker clears only on proof: a
derive that completed both halves and is either no longer blocked on
the level or provably can never reach three levels from the data in
hand, or when its raw has aged out or the prune has cut into its
night. A failed or timed-out re-score, or the app dying between
passes, leaves the day for the next run. Marking never counts; the
unreachable proof counts with its reads ordered (derived set, then
levels) so a concurrent commit can only make it more cautious.
- The rescan signature fingerprints the dated quiet_hrr entries that
can feed any rescanned day's window, so a level moving under one
day's window re-prices it even when the overall count and median do
not move. The newest entry (normally today's, rewritten on every
light derive) is left out: it sits only in unfinalized days' windows.
- The v63 strain rescale stays on the lump form (only TRIMP and the
wake-minute count survive for those days), now at the personal
level. It retries rather than marking done while no level exists.
Before/after on the existing strain_resting_hr_source fixture (RHR 55,
300 min @62 + 60 min @130): 2.85 -> 8.55. Low-quiet day (RHR 50, 855
min @64 + 45 min @145): 0.00 -> 9.90 at their own level.
Requires kAlgoVersion bump (batched) and an analytics repin to the
commit adding strainScoreFromSeries / personalQuietWakingHrr /
netTrimpAboveQuiet. Until then this builds only against a local
analytics override.
Three descriptions said something the code does not do: - The HRV method text said "RMSSD over the longest artefact-free window during sleep … corrected by the Lipponen–Tarvainen method". The nightly headline is the MEAN of RMSSD across the sleep session's 5-minute windows that hold at least 20 clean successive differences, cleaned by a 300–2000 ms range filter and a 20 % local-median ectopic filter, not by correctRr; on a night whose beat timing looks noisy only windows that pass the jitter check on their own, or sit on a steady breathing line, count; and a window or night whose beats add up to more time than passed is left out. Citation: Task Force 1996, with the ectopic filter credited as after Malik (it compares each beat to its neighbours' median, not to the previous beat). - The Health catalogue blurb said "RMSSD over the cleanest window of sleep": now "Mean RMSSD across the night's 5-minute windows". - hrv_cv was labelled "night-to-night coefficient of variation of RMSSD" / "how much that swings from night to night". It is computed WITHIN one night: SDNN of the night's Lipponen–Tarvainen-corrected beat intervals as a percentage of their mean. The chart shows how that per-night figure moves across nights, which is now what the method says, and the blurb reads "SDNN as a share of the average beat interval, within one night". Blurbs updated in all six locales (en, de, es, fr, hi, zh), with the en @descriptions to match. Copy only: no stored output changes, no kAlgoVersion bump. The 20-difference floor and the over-count rule are the analytics window-floor and RR over-count changes, and the single nightly estimator is the companion edge change; this text should land with or after them. A real night-to-night HRV CV would change a stored series' meaning and is left for separate work.
Analytics now refuses RMSSD when Σ RR exceeds 1.10 × the wall span (duplicated or interleaved beats). The headline picks that up through sleepSessionWindowedRmssd, but two things only edge can do: - Hand the over-count to every RMSSD. The pipeline now computes rrCoverage over the raw sleep RR and passes it to hrvTime, nocturnalRmssd and nightHrvShape, and skips the rolling RMSSD timeline when it is over-counted. Without it a duplicated stream lost its headline but the whole-night and NREM estimators, every bin of the nightly HRV shape and the timeline still published, deflated. - Store what the headline rests on. clinical.rmssd_sleep_session gains windows, diff_acf1, rr_coverage and overcounted_windows (from sleepSessionRmssdDetail; null when the headline is absent), and the coverage block gains rr_coverage and rr_duplicate_beats. Diagnostics only: no metric_series key, no coach column, no migration. test/rr_overcount_pipeline_test.dart: an honest 7 h night reads ≈ 1.0 and keeps its RMSSD with the diagnostics stored; the same night with every beat duplicated reads ≈ 2.0 and loses the headline, ln_rmssd, rmssd_whole, the NREM median and the nightly HRV shape, each with an rr_overcount note, and draws no HRV timeline. Needs an analytics pin containing rrCoverage / sleepSessionRmssdDetail. Requires kAlgoVersion bump (batched).
scalars.rmssd fell back from the sleep-session mean of 5-min-window RMSSDs to the NREM median (nocturnalRmssd) and then to the whole-night RMSSD (hrvTime) whenever the session estimator abstained. Those are different statistics over differently-cleaned beats, so everything that reads the stored rmssd (HRV chart and row, widget, Health Connect export, coach v_daily.hrv, the hrv EWMA baseline and next day's rmssd_history, cross-day anomaly/glass-box inputs, stress block, CSV) mixed three estimators under one name. Readiness only ever used the session value (ln_rmssd), so on a fallback night the "HRV" shown was not the HRV that was scored. The three estimators also judge jitter on different beats, so the chain could replace a refused headline with a secondary estimate that passed on its own beats. The project's own rule is that no metric is derived from another as a fallback. rmssd is now sleepSessionRmssd or null. rmssd_nocturnal, rmssd_whole and hrv_time keep publishing under their own keys. A fallback night now shows HRV "—" instead of a different number. Two mixes outside the pipeline go with it: - Investigate's "Time domain" RMSSD row is the whole-night hrv_time envelope, and it used to borrow the headline when that was refused. It no longer does (an absent row is dropped), and the headline gets its own row, "RMSSD, nightly (mean of 5-min windows)" (new ARB key investigateRmssdNightly). - Today's HRV block took its confidence from hrv_time while showing the session value; it now uses rmssd_sleep_session's confidence via the pure seam hrvConfidenceForToday. - clinical.rmssd_sleep_session also stores thin_windows and min_diffs_per_window: how many 5-min windows the mean does not rest on, and the floor that dropped them. Stale doc comments that described the headline as the NREM median are corrected. Tests: test/rmssd_single_estimator_test.dart (no session estimate ⇒ rmssd, ln_rmssd, the hrv baseline value and stress.rmssd all null while rmssd_nocturnal and rmssd_whole still publish; with a session, rmssd is the session value and exp(ln_rmssd) == rmssd; Today's confidence); an Investigate widget test; and test/rmssd_persistence_test.dart, which drives the real engine over a night whose session abstains but whose NREM median publishes (RR in 10-beat blocks every 5 minutes): a stored same-day rmssd of 37 becomes null in the bundle, day_result.rmssd and metric_series rmssd / ln_rmssd on two consecutive derives, and the next day's baseline window folds the real prior night but not the stale 37. With the fallback restored that test fails. Requires kAlgoVersion bump (batched).
…stored A day_result derived before rmssd became the single session estimator can hold a FALLBACK rmssd (the NREM median or the whole-night value) beside an absent session envelope (value '—', confidence 0). Rows are immutable per version and only the last ~3 days re-derive after a bump, so for a long time most of a user's HRV history is such bundles, and the consumers disagreed about them: - Today's HRV confidence came from the absent envelope, 0, which blanked Health's HRV row (Metric.isEmpty honours confidence) while the widget, the trend chart and the baselines kept showing and using the number. hrvConfidenceForToday now uses the session confidence only when the session envelope holds a value; otherwise the bundle keeps the confidence it was always served with, hrv_time's. - Investigate labelled every stored rmssd "mean of 5-min windows". getDayHrv now also returns clinical.rmssd_sleep_session, and the row uses that label only when the envelope holds a value, otherwise "RMSSD, nightly (earlier estimate)" (new ARB key investigateRmssdStored), distinct from the whole-night "RMSSD" row. Bundles derived since never take the legacy branch: their rmssd is null whenever the session is absent. test/rmssd_legacy_bundle_test.dart stores four pre-change bundles and checks every consumer agrees on the retained value: Today (value and confidence), Health's HRV row, the widget, getDayHrv (value and the envelope), the trend chart and the next derive's baseline window. Its days are built by calendar date (DateTime(y, m, d + n)), not 24 h steps, so it holds across a DST change. An Investigate widget test checks the legacy label.
The RSA estimator read the beat-rate Nyquist off span/(n−1), which across a dropout is the beat interval divided by coverage. A 55 bpm night with a 1 h 45 min hole "beat" at 41.27 bpm and was withheld whole as an alias: scalars.resp_rate null, the readiness resp driver, baselines.resp and next days' resp_history gone, with a note blaming a heart rate the user never had. The fix is in analytics (median beat interval for both ceilings, Σ NN coverage for sub-window completeness) and reaches all three edge call sites through rsaRespRate: the nightly rate, the 30-min BRV bins and dayRespCurve. This pins it end to end through deriveDayBundle: the gappy night now publishes ~15 br/min with no "beat rate" note, and a genuine 45 bpm night is still withheld as an alias with the true heart rate in its note. Needs an analytics pin containing the gap-aware rsaRespRate. Requires kAlgoVersion bump (batched).
The resp_rate method text still described the old whole-night grid
surrogate ("over a grid of candidate rates", citing Pimentel 2017).
Analytics replaced that with Welch segmentation: Lomb–Scargle on native
beat times in overlapping five-minute stretches, the median across them,
published only when most stretches agree, and withheld when the sleeping
heart rate is too low (near or below 48 bpm) to resolve normal breathing.
The citation moves to Welch 1967 and Press & Rybicki 1989. Copy only.
The one-time quiet_hrr seed priced each stored day on that bundle's max_hr_used, while the live derive prices it on estimatedMaxHr at the current profile age. After a birthday or a profile edit the two are on different scales, and the trailing median mixes them. The seed now uses the same ceiling as the live derive; without an age it seeds nothing and stays armed, as the live derive also abstains. The live gauge's quiet-level fill gets its own guard, so a failure there cannot skip the resting-HR refresh. The strain rescale's comment now states why one current level prices every rescaled day.
investigateRmssdNightly and investigateRmssdStored existed only in English, so Investigate showed them untranslated in de, es, fr, hi and zh. A test checks every shipped language has its own text for both.
…rescan gate The seed read only the newest window of result rows and dropped imports, skipped and partial rows afterwards, so a long import newer than the measured days filled the window, nothing was seeded, and the seed was marked done. It now selects measured days first (payload-free), applies the window to those, and reads each bundle on its own. A seed that wrote levels left the rolling artifact's signature as it was, so on a pass with nothing to derive rescanRecent saw no change and never re-scored the days the new levels price. The artifact is now refreshed after any nonzero seed, ahead of every early return, under its own guard.
The Health catalogue blurb (all locales) and the HRV method text still described the old headline (cleanest / longest artefact-free window, Lipponen-Tarvainen corrected). The headline is now the sleep-session mean of qualifying 5-minute windows, filtered per window, and absent when none qualifies or the beat stream is over-counted.
…ry doc rmssdFromSessionEstimator was inserted between LocalRepository's doc comment and the class, so the class doc attached to the function.
The rescan signature left the newest quiet_hrr entry out on the assumption that only unfinalized days come after it. A day too short to write its own level (under 360 wake minutes) can follow it and be finalized, priced on that newest level; moving the level then never re-priced it. The newest entry is now left out only while no baseline series has a later day, which keeps today's rewrites from triggering a rescan. Also restores the missing space in `_rhr28 = await`.
…evel The golden's day has no quiet-level history, so strain abstains, as it did before. Only the absent metric's inputs_used changes, from the lump form's (trimp, wake_minutes, quiet_waking_hrr) to the series form's (hr_1hz, profile, quiet_waking_hrr_history). No number moves. Rides the kAlgoVersion bump this change already requires.

rmssd is one nightly estimator with the RR over-count gate and the 20-clean-difference window floor; the RSA respiratory rate survives sensor gaps; strain and trimp_net are priced against the user's own quiet-waking level; sleep detection no longer bridges unobserved recording gaps and caps bridges at 90 min. Days derived before 110 keep their stored values. two_device_day_expected.json regenerated: the gen4-only rows carry a 2 h unobserved gap (04:00-05:59), which the old detector bridged into sleep. The night now ends at the gap (TST 360 -> 240 min), so the 06:00-07:59 block is waking time: HR dip and the wake-HR series appear, strain's absent note moves to the next missing input (age), the RSA rate is reported across the gap, and hrv_session carries the new window diagnostics.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
_strainCurve must not draw a curve on a day with no headline strain.
The headline strain is absent when strainAbsentNote is set. The curve has no matching check for that. _strainCurve returns an empty list only when there is no wake HR, no sex, or strainCurveFromSeries returns null. The headline also abstains when dayHrValid is empty. If the analytics curve function does not refuse that case on its own, the stored curve can end at a value while the headline reads "—". The comment at Line 1851 promises that the last point is the headline.
Pass the headline's verdict into _strainCurve and return an empty curve when strain is absent.

Make the strain backfill converge when fewer than three seed levels exist.
seedQuietHrrHistoryOnce filters invalid, imported, skipped, and partial bundles. It can therefore produce fewer than three quiet_hrr values, while still marking its seed as complete. personalQuietLevelBefore then returns no level, and backfillStrainScale exits without marking the rescale complete. Later derive passes repeat the scan and leave the old strain values unchanged.
If fewer than three valid values can be recovered, persist a safe fallback level or record a bounded terminal outcome for the migration. Do not leave the rescale key unset indefinitely.

Review comment at @lib/compute/strain_backfill.dart around lines 117 - 125:
Update the no-level path in backfillStrainScale after personalQuietLevelBefore
so fewer than three recovered quiet_hrr values cannot leave the rescale key
unset indefinitely; persist a safe fallback level or record a bounded terminal
migration outcome, while preserving normal rescaling when a valid level exists.

Describe HRV without misidentifying retained estimates. Days without raw data retain their older HRV values, but these unconditional catalog descriptions identify every value as the new five-minute-window mean. Use estimator-neutral copy, or select copy using the displayed day’s provenance.

Review comment at @lib/l10n/app_en.arb at line 6790:
Revise the HRV description to avoid implying that retained estimates were
calculated from five-minute windows, using estimator-neutral wording unless the
displayed day’s provenance can select accurate copy. Update the equivalent
translations as well: lib/l10n/app_en.arb at 6790-6790, lib/l10n/app_de.arb at
1365-1365, and lib/l10n/app_es.arb at 1321-1321. Ensure the correction is

Ports OpenStrap#567's live quiet-level fill into the split controllers: fillLiveQuietLevel moves to WorkoutController (it needs LiveWorkoutState's private re-score), LiveWorkoutState gains quietHrr/quietSettled and _scoreStrain. The two workout tests that expect a live strain now seed three quiet_hrr days, as main's own tests do.
User description
Integrates the HRV/strain chain as one algorithm release, so users see a single re-score.
User-visible: days still holding raw data re-derive at v110; older days keep their stored v109 values. Strain values change (priced on the personal quiet level) and show "need N more days" until 3 prior levels exist.
Tests: flutter analyze clean apart from the existing onReorder info; full suite passes apart from the pre-existing health_workout_export_delete_gate_test duplicate-delete failure and an order-dependent ui2_revision_reload_test case that passes on its own.

Prices strain against the user's own quiet-waking level (
quiet_hrr).Changes missing data behavior: strain abstains if fewer than 3 prior
quiet_hrrlevels exist.Seeds
quiet_hrrhistory from stored bundles for existing users.Makes respiration rate gap-aware and caps sleep detection bridges at 90 minutes.
