Why

All five strain sites — the pipeline headline, series.strain_curve, the engine recompute, session/live scoring and the stored-strain rescale — subtract the cost of being awake at the 0.20 HRR population reference. analytics made that level a required argument so callers would pass the user's own, but dailyQuietWakingHrr is never called. It is wrong both ways: above 0.20 a day with no activity scores 7–12/21; below 0.20 (fit users, low RHR) quiet minutes net negative against exercise, so a 45-min run at 145 bpm scored 0.00/21 for someone sitting at 0.10 HRR, and the intraday curve fell back to 0 by bedtime.

What changed

The level

  • Each derived day measures its own level (dailyQuietWakingHrr, ≥ 360 wake minutes) and persists it as quiet_hrr; it feeds later days only, never itself.
  • Strain is scored against the median of the trailing 28 prior measured days (imports excluded). Both derive halves get the same valuesBefore('quiet_hrr', date) window, so headline, curve and recompute cannot disagree.
  • Sessions (save, retime, confirm, on-read re-score) use the level for the session's own local day; the live gauge reads it fresh for the session's start day and fills the gap without ever moving a level a running session was scored on.
  • Scoring goes through analytics' strainScoreFromSeries / strainCurveFromSeries: minutes ≥ 40 % HRR are never offset by quiet time.
  • < 3 prior levels: strain abstains with need_baseline (the UI's "Need N more days"); 3–6: lower confidence, "calibrating". The 0.20 constant is no longer referenced in lib/.
  • The net load above the level is persisted per day as trimp_net (the input a CTL/ATL training-load read needs instead of gross TRIMP).

Keeping strain from going blank

  • One-shot quiet_hrr_seed_v1 seeds existing installs' trailing history from stored bundles (strain_curve wake minutes joined to hr_curve), off the UI isolate, first thing in run() so a restored install with no 1 Hz rows is seeded too.
  • A sweep prices all days on one frozen snapshot, so a first sync of a whole week would score every day with no level. A day whose strain abstained on the level while an earlier day exists gets a durable quiet_repass:<date> marker (written before its row); while marked it is never finalized, so the existing raw prune holds it like any unfinished day, and every run()/runDays() re-derives marked days that now have a level, before the prune (held while a timezone change is suspected, like the rescan). The marker clears only on proof: a complete derive that is no longer blocked, or that provably can never reach three levels, or when its raw has aged out or the prune has cut into its night. A failed or timed-out re-score, or the app dying between passes, leaves the day for the next run.
  • The rescan signature fingerprints the dated quiet_hrr entries that can feed a rescanned day's window (minus the newest, which only unfinalized days read), so a level moving under one day re-prices it.
  • The v63 strain rescale stays on the lump form (only TRIMP and the wake-minute count survive for those days), now at the personal level; it retries rather than marking done while no level exists.

Before / after (user-visible)

day before after
RHR 55, 300 min @62 + 60 min @130 2.85 8.55
RHR 50, 855 min @64 + 45 min @145, own level 0.00 9.90
new user, days 1–3 a number from the 0.20 reference "—" / "Need N more days"

Intraday strain no longer falls back after a workout because of a quiet evening below the user's level.

Tests

New: strain_quiet_level_test (pipeline/engine pricing, abstain grammar, calibrating, idempotence, low-quiet regression, curve end == headline), quiet_hrr_seed_test, quiet_level_engine_test (real run()/runDays() over decoded 1 Hz rows: a first-sync week, injected repass failure and process death between passes, a second-half timeout on the re-score, the 359/360-minute boundary, NULL replacement of persisted rows, prune-truncated owed days, and deterministic interleavings for the owed/unreachable checks), plus signature regressions in readiness_baseline_pollution_test. Updated: tests that assert strain now pass a quiet history (tonight_sleep_test keeps its strict "asleep scores higher" assertion with a level below the waking minutes). flutter analyze clean; full flutter test --concurrency=1 green except the sibling-pin check, which fails only under a local analytics override and passes once pinned.

Summary by Sourcery

Replace population-reference strain pricing with a personal quiet-waking baseline across daily, intraday, session, live, and historical scoring.

New Features:

  • Price daily, session, live, curve, and rescaled strain using each user's trailing personal quiet-waking level instead of a population reference.
  • Persist daily quiet-waking levels and net TRIMP, with baseline-aware abstention and calibration states for cold-start users.

Bug Fixes:

  • Prevent quiet waking from canceling meaningful exercise and prevent intraday strain from falling back after workouts.
  • Keep headline, intraday curve, engine recomputation, and session scoring on consistent strain calculations.

Enhancements:

  • Add quiet-level history seeding for existing installs and durable repassing of days that initially lack enough baseline data.
  • Refresh rescans when relevant quiet-waking history changes and preserve retry behavior across failed derives, timeouts, pruning, and process interruptions.
  • Align live and saved-session scoring with the session's local start day while preserving the level used by an active session.

Tests:

  • Add coverage for personal quiet-level pricing, baseline abstention and calibration, curve/headline consistency, low-quiet exercise regressions, history seeding, engine repasses, persistence replacement, concurrency, pruning, and live/session behavior.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Strain scores now use your personal quiet-waking heart-rate level for daily activity, manual sessions, and live workouts.
    • Eligible historical data is used to build quiet-waking heart-rate history for personalized scoring.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Previously unscored days can be recalculated when a personal baseline becomes available.
    • Strain remains unscored when there isn’t enough history to establish a reliable baseline.

All five strain sites subtracted the cost of being awake at the 0.20
HRR population reference: the pipeline headline, series.strain_curve,
the engine recompute, session/live scoring and the stored-strain
rescale. analytics made that level a required argument precisely so
callers would pass the user's own, but dailyQuietWakingHrr was never
called. That is a substituted default, and it is wrong in both
directions:

- Above 0.20, a day with no activity scores 7-12/21.
- Below 0.20 (fit users, low RHR), quiet minutes net negative against
exercise. A 45-min run at 145 bpm scored 0.00/21 for someone sitting
at 0.10 HRR, and the intraday curve climbed through the run and fell
  back to 0 by bedtime.

The level:

- Each derived day measures its own level (dailyQuietWakingHrr over
  >= 360 wake minutes) and persists it as `quiet_hrr`. It feeds later
days only, never the day itself.
- Strain is scored against the median of the trailing 28 prior
measured days, imports excluded. Both derive halves get the same
`valuesBefore('quiet_hrr', date)` window, so the pipeline headline,
the curve and the engine recompute cannot disagree.
- Sessions (save, retime, confirm, on-read re-score) read the same
window for the session's own local day (`personalQuietLevelBefore`).
The live gauge reads the level fresh for the session's own start day
and fills the gap (never moving a level a running session was scored
on); a resumed session's restored tally is re-scored as soon as it
  lands.
- Scoring goes through analytics' strainScoreFromSeries /
strainCurveFromSeries. Minutes at or above 40 % HRR are never offset
by quiet time, and the curve's last point is the headline.
- Fewer than 3 prior levels: strain abstains with need_baseline (the
UI's "Need N more days"). 3-6 days: scored at lower confidence,
"calibrating". The 0.20 constant is no longer referenced in lib/.
- The net load above the level is persisted per day as `trimp_net`,
the input a CTL/ATL training-load read needs instead of gross TRIMP.

Keeping strain from going blank:

- One-shot `quiet_hrr_seed_v1` seeds existing installs' trailing
history from stored bundles (strain_curve's wake minutes joined to
hr_curve), off the UI isolate. It runs first in run(), ahead of
every early return, so a restored install with bundles but no 1 Hz
rows is seeded too. Without it, a version bump would re-derive only
a few days and every existing user's strain would go blank.
- A sweep prices every day on one frozen history snapshot, so a first
sync of a whole week would score every day with no level. A day whose
strain abstained on the quiet level while any earlier day exists
(unfinalized raw, or a stored level) gets a durable per-day
`quiet_repass:<date>` marker, written before its row. While marked,
the day is never finalized, so the raw prune holds it like any
unfinished day. Every run()/runDays() re-derives marked days that now
have a level, before the prune (held while a timezone change is
suspected, like the rescan). The marker clears only on proof: a
derive that completed both halves and is either no longer blocked on
the level or provably can never reach three levels from the data in
hand, or when its raw has aged out or the prune has cut into its
night. A failed or timed-out re-score, or the app dying between
passes, leaves the day for the next run. Marking never counts; the
unreachable proof counts with its reads ordered (derived set, then
levels) so a concurrent commit can only make it more cautious.
- The rescan signature fingerprints the dated quiet_hrr entries that
can feed any rescanned day's window, so a level moving under one
day's window re-prices it even when the overall count and median do
not move. The newest entry (normally today's, rewritten on every
light derive) is left out: it sits only in unfinalized days' windows.
- The v63 strain rescale stays on the lump form (only TRIMP and the
wake-minute count survive for those days), now at the personal
level. It retries rather than marking done while no level exists.

Before/after on the existing strain_resting_hr_source fixture (RHR 55,
300 min @62 + 60 min @130): 2.85 -> 8.55. Low-quiet day (RHR 50, 855
min @64 + 45 min @145): 0.00 -> 9.90 at their own level.

Requires kAlgoVersion bump (batched) and an analytics repin to the
commit adding strainScoreFromSeries / personalQuietWakingHrr /
netTrimpAboveQuiet. Until then this builds only against a local
analytics override.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Replace the population-reference strain baseline with a per-user quiet-waking baseline throughout daily, curve, recompute, session, live, and historical-rescale scoring.
  • Measure and persist each qualifying day’s quiet_hrr, using the median of up to 28 prior measured days for scoring.
  • Route headline, curve, engine, manual-session, and live scoring through the analytics series APIs with exercise minutes protected from quiet-time offsets.
  • Persist trimp_net as load above the personal quiet level and abstain with baseline-specific notes until three prior levels exist.
  • Remove all library references to the fixed 0.20 HRR baseline.

Add migration and derive-sweep handling so historical users receive quiet levels and initially unscored days converge safely.
  • Seed trailing quiet_hrr values from stored wake and HR curves in an isolate, including restored installs without raw 1 Hz data.
  • Add durable per-day repass markers, retry behavior, raw-retention holds, unreachable-day cleanup, and timezone/prune safeguards.
  • Fingerprint dated quiet-level history in baseline signatures so affected rescans reprice only when relevant prior levels move.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Daily strain now uses a personal quiet-waking HRR baseline derived from prior days. The change adds historical quiet-HRR seeding, baseline-aware rescans and retries, and updates manual, live, restored, and backfilled session scoring.

Changes

Personal quiet-HRR strain scoring

Layer / File(s) Summary
Quiet-HRR history and seeding
lib/compute/quiet_level.dart, lib/compute/quiet_level_seed.dart, lib/data/db.dart, lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart
The code reads prior quiet-HRR values and seeds eligible historical values once. The engine includes quiet-HRR in its cached baseline series.
Daily strain scoring and metric persistence
lib/compute/onehz_pipeline.dart, lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart
The daily pipeline receives strictly prior-day quiet-HRR history and scores strain against the personal level. The engine persists quiet_hrr and trimp_net.
Baseline invalidation and deferred derivation
lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart
The engine fingerprints quiet-HRR history for rescans and records days blocked by a missing baseline. Later passes retry eligible days and clear markers when scoring completes or the baseline cannot become available.
Manual, live, and backfilled session scoring
lib/compute/manual_session.dart, lib/data/local_repository_impl.dart, lib/state/app_state.dart, lib/compute/strain_backfill.dart, lib/compute/quiet_level.dart
Manual, live, restored, and backfilled session scoring now uses the relevant personal quiet-HRR level. Live workout state also stores the level and its settled status.

**Pinned analytics API breaks builds**

When the PR is built or merged before the analytics PR is merged and `openstrap_analytics` is repinned, the new scoring call requires `personalQuietWakingHrr` and related APIs from the analytics PR, but this change does not update the pinned analytics dependency. A build resolving the repository's existing pin fails to compile at this call and other new API uses, blocking release until the pin is updated.

Include the required analytics SHA repin and lockfile update in the merge sequence before building this change.

**Rescaled days lack net load**

When `backfillStrainScale` rescale handles historical days outside raw retention, `backfillStrainScale` persists only the `strain` series value and does not populate `trimp_net`, so downstream training-load reads see gaps for those days.

Persist the corresponding `trimp_net` value for each rescaled historical day.

Sourcery assessment

Needs a human reviewer. 2 findings to address first, and this changes strain scoring across the app and persists new quiet-level, net-load, and recalculated strain values in day results and metric history. Reverting the code would not remove those stored values, but the affected derived data is bounded and can be recomputed or backfilled.

Blocking findings: lib/compute/onehz_pipeline.dart:839, lib/compute/strain_backfill.dart:199

The one-time quiet_hrr seed priced each stored day on that bundle's
max_hr_used, while the live derive prices it on estimatedMaxHr at the
current profile age. After a birthday or a profile edit the two are on
different scales, and the trailing median mixes them. The seed now uses
the same ceiling as the live derive; without an age it seeds nothing and
stays armed, as the live derive also abstains.

The live gauge's quiet-level fill gets its own guard, so a failure there
cannot skip the resting-HR refresh. The strain rescale's comment now
states why one current level prices every rescaled day.

Include the newest entry when a later day can use it.

If the newest quiet_hrr entry belongs to a completed prior day, excluding it hides changes to that day from the rescan signature. A later day can then keep a strain score based on the old level. Exclude an entry only when it cannot enter any rescan day's prior-day window.

Update the end-index calculation for the quiet_hrr series so it excludes the
newest entry only when that entry cannot fall within any rescan day’s prior-day
window; otherwise include it in the rescan signature.

…rescan gate

The seed read only the newest window of result rows and dropped imports,
skipped and partial rows afterwards, so a long import newer than the
measured days filled the window, nothing was seeded, and the seed was
marked done. It now selects measured days first (payload-free), applies
the window to those, and reads each bundle on its own.

A seed that wrote levels left the rolling artifact's signature as it
was, so on a pass with nothing to derive rescanRecent saw no change and
never re-scored the days the new levels price. The artifact is now
refreshed after any nonzero seed, ahead of every early return, under its
own guard.
The rescan signature left the newest quiet_hrr entry out on the
assumption that only unfinalized days come after it. A day too short to
write its own level (under 360 wake minutes) can follow it and be
finalized, priced on that newest level; moving the level then never
re-priced it. The newest entry is now left out only while no baseline
series has a later day, which keeps today's rewrites from triggering a
rescan.

Also restores the missing space in `_rhr28 = await`.
…evel

The golden's day has no quiet-level history, so strain abstains, as it
did before. Only the absent metric's inputs_used changes, from the lump
form's (trimp, wake_minutes, quiet_waking_hrr) to the series form's
(hr_1hz, profile, quiet_waking_hrr_history). No number moves. Rides the
kAlgoVersion bump this change already requires.
