Overview

Add an AWS Strands harness adapter that reuses the shared ACP runner to launch the separately installed strands --acp-server CLI. NVIDIA NeMo Fabric consumers can retain a conversation across ordered invocations, select Bedrock or an explicit OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions endpoint, append system instructions, and supply MCP servers.

The adapter adds no third-party production dependencies: it uses the existing NeMo Fabric contract and common packages. Reusing the native CLI avoids maintaining a separate Strands-to-ACP bridge or bundling the harness dependency graph. The Node license inventory and generated attributions are unchanged.

Details

  • Add nvidia.fabric.strands, its closed descriptor schemas, Python discovery catalog entry, npm workspace, and release wiring.
  • Isolate CLI profiles and persistent state, preserve the AWS credential chain, retain native workspace context, and disable background tool execution. Shared ACP process termination can be retried after failure while prompts remain disabled; concurrent stop calls share one attempt.
  • Normalize invocation-local usage, including cache details, and bound warm conversations with an explicit invocation limit. Strands CLI 0.2.1 conflates missing cache counters with zero; omit its ambiguous zero cache counts and preserve positive counts and inclusive totals.
  • Add deterministic lifecycle/process tests, opt-in live E2E tests, documentation, and a read-only code-review example. No Harbor changes or Dockerfiles.
  • Initial scope is the standard Strands harness. Custom source agents, normalized tool policy/skills, Relay, services, public cancellation, and native streaming are not advertised. No existing adapter behavior changes.

Validation

  • Live E2E through the Python SDK, native runtime, adapter process boundary, shared ACP runner, and Strands CLI 0.2.1 / harness 0.1.1 / SDK 1.22.0: 3 passed against keyless local Nemotron Ultra and 3 passed against NVIDIA-hosted Nemotron Ultra using NVIDIA_API_KEY. Covers conversation continuation, independent runtimes, consumer usage, MCP on the first turn, and native file reads.
  • Real Bedrock-provider ACP session initialization passed. Bedrock inference was not run: this environment has no AWS credentials or profile.
  • npm test --prefix adapters/typescript passed earlier, including adapter suites, tarball checks, and consumer installs/lifecycle. The latest CI unit suites still pass; the current audit now fails on newly reported Zod/body-parser findings (see below).
  • Latest focused tests: 26 common, 17 Strands, 9 Kiro, and 8 Python adapter tests passed; final adapter/versioning/code-review Python matrix after review fixes: 64 passed. The earlier broader planning/catalog/release regression matrix passed 63 tests. A live run of the read-only code-review example also passed.
  • just --set no_uv true docs, strict Fern link checks, Ruff, actionlint, copyright checks, Node attributions, and Node license diff passed.
  • just --set no_uv true test-python was attempted; collection is blocked locally by missing optional Claude, Codex, mini-SWE-agent, LangGraph, and Relay dependencies. CI will run with its configured dependencies.
  • Previous checks on 4deb097c: 36 passed (including CodeRabbit), 3 expected skips. Checks on 09b39ad7 passed (36 successes, 3 expected skips). On ed86363a, both TypeScript adapter jobs passed their unit tests but failed the unchanged npm audit gate: newly reported high-severity findings affect Zod and body-parser in existing adapters. CodeRabbit completed its review of ed86363a with no new actionable comments. The full functional test matrix passed; the final macOS wheel build is queued without an assigned macos-15 runner. Current checks: 33 passed, 3 skipped, 2 npm-audit failures, 1 queued. Compatible dependency fixes and the remaining upstream SDK blockers are tracked separately in draft ci: patch dependencies and scope temporary Zod audit exception #484; this cleanup PR does not change dependency versions or audit thresholds. CodeRabbit completed its follow-up review, and all fifteen inline review threads are resolved. Earlier outside-diff release checklist and workspace inventory findings were addressed in 4deb097c. Maryam’s three findings were addressed in dcd3c3af; the follow-up test cleanup finding was addressed in 09b39ad7. The existing autouse environment fixture covers the withdrawn PATH finding.
  • The npm placeholder nemo-fabric-adapters-strands@0.0.0 is published and the bootstrap check passed. Authenticated trusted-publisher readback still needs confirmation before release; public package existence does not verify that configuration.
  • Ajay’s invocation-failure cleanup finding is addressed in ed86363a: retain invalidated sessions until cleanup succeeds, prevent replacement/invocation while cleanup is pending, and retry termination on stop. A real ACP process/descendant regression failed before the fix and passes afterward. The 17 Strands tests and 11 Python checks, including three live local E2E cases, passed.
  • Maryam’s three review findings are addressed: corrected the contract/common/adapter build order (verified in a fresh temporary source checkout), added a real process/descendant cleanup-retry regression that failed before the fix, and tested the Strands-specific cache-zero workaround. Repeated all three E2E cases against both local and hosted Ultra after the fixes.
  • Current audit blockers: GHSA-mrhx-c7xc-m3w5 (Zod; several existing harnesses require Zod 3) and GHSA-27r3-jxmh-p828 (body-parser). No dependency versions or audit thresholds were changed in Ajay’s cleanup fix.
  • NVIDIA-hosted Ultra passed all live tests. Earlier Nano attempts hit account-level 404/service-capacity 503 responses.

Where should the reviewer start?

Start with adapters/typescript/strands/README.md for the integration boundary, then strands.fabric-adapter.json and src/strands-acp.ts. tests/e2e/test_strands.py documents the live acceptance tests.

Explanation

The title follows Conventional Commits format with the allowed lowercase type "feat", uses an imperative summary, stays under 72 characters, has no trailing period, and accurately describes the adapter addition.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's required sections: Overview, Where should the reviewer start, Related Issues, and both checkboxes. It explains the adapter purpose, scope, and validation in detail. Its main gap is the Related Issues field, which says 'Relates to: none' instead of linking an issue or stating none exists. The Validation section is very long and mixes in CI status, audit failures, and review-thread history that may go stale after merge. Those details still help a reviewer, so the check passes.

No change is required for empty pre-dispatch extensions.

The host validates run_result extensions, but skips validation when the extension map is empty. Therefore, strands_session_limit does not fail because it returns extensions: {}. The other pre-dispatch failures already omit extensions.

- Update user-facing entry points when public behavior, the `nemo-fabric` package (imported as `nemo_fabric`), examples, or supported bindings change: `README.md`, the Fern docs under `docs/` (navigation in `docs/index.yml`, site config in `fern/docs.yml`), and the adapter/integration READMEs (`adapters/README.md`, `adapters/*/README.md`, `adapters/*/*/README.md`, `sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/integrations/*/README.md`, `examples/README.md`).

🟡 Minor · Clear the Strands session handle only after session.stop() succeeds. · runtime.ts:178-182

adapters/typescript/strands/src/runtime.ts:178-182
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear the Strands session handle only after session.stop() succeeds.

stop() clears this.session before it awaits session.stop(). If session.stop() rejects during process-tree termination, the runtime no longer holds the session. The host's retry then calls stop() with no session and does nothing. A child process that survived the failed termination can remain running.

Suggested fix
   async stop(): Promise<void> {
     const session = this.session;
-    this.session = undefined;
-    if (session !== undefined) await session.stop();
+    if (session !== undefined) {
+      await session.stop();
+      this.session = undefined;

🟡 Minor · Add nemo-fabric-adapters-strands to the RELEASING.md npm package lists. · RELEASING.md:35

RELEASING.md:35
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add nemo-fabric-adapters-strands to the RELEASING.md npm package lists.

The publish workflow publishes nemo-fabric-adapters-strands, but RELEASING.md omits it from the npm surface table and from the post-publish verification loops. An operator who follows the documented checks skips the Strands package. The publish workflow itself is not affected.

Ran this end to end with Nemotron Ultra on the B200 using Strands CLI 0.2.1. Simple invocations, warm conversation, independent runtimes, MCP on the first turn, native file reads, usage, and normal cleanup all worked as expected. The TypeScript suite, focused Python tests, and packaged-consumer checks passed. Please address the inline cleanup-retry comment before merging.
