🧭 Context

Section 5 of the tracking issue #216 ("To verify before closing", step 4 of its proposal) asked to compare the thread, direct message, crosspost and createMessage paths with discord.js main and to turn each finding into a fix or a documented difference. The manager work of steps 1 to 3 is merged (#219, #221, #222, #226, #236, #238, #252, #253). This PR is the verification pass.

📚 Description

Each check was run against the current packages/plugin-gateway code and against GuildTextThreadManager, GuildForumThreadManager, DMMessageManager, PartialGroupDMMessageManager, GuildMessageManager#crosspost and ChannelManager#createMessage of discord.js main. Where Pullfrog's correction on the issue applied (create already branches on message; rateLimitPerUser is not forum-only), it was followed: the option check is about message, appliedTags, type and invitable.

Two real defects were fixed:

  • threads.create dropped options silently (appliedTags without message, type/invitable with it), and let a forum or media channel without message, or a text channel with one, reach Discord.
  • The messages of a direct message had crosspost, bulkDelete and startThread, which Discord always refuses there. discord.js has no such methods on DMMessageManager, and this package already leaves bulkDelete off the DM channel itself.

The shared ChannelThreadManager and ChannelMessageManager classes are kept (the cheap option of the plan): the options are typed as a union and checked at runtime, and the guild-only methods throw. Departure from the plan: no compile-time omission of crosspost on DMChannel#messages, because TextBasedChannel is a union that includes DMs, so message.channel.messages.crosspost(...) would stop compiling for current users. The runtime error is clear and non-breaking, and it can be narrowed later if wanted.

Key changes

# Check Result Action
1a Forum-only options on a text thread (appliedTags, message) appliedTags without message was dropped silently; message in a text or announcement channel went to Discord Fixed: ThreadOptionsPostOnly thrown before any request, in ThreadManager#create (shape) and ChannelThreadManager#create (channel type)
1b Thread-only options on a forum post (type, invitable) Dropped silently when message was set Fixed: ThreadOptionsThreadOnly
1c Forum or media channel without message A plain thread request was sent, which Discord refuses (discord.js throws GuildForumMessageRequired) Fixed: ThreadPostMessageRequired
1d Typing of the options One flat interface Fixed: ThreadCreateOptions = TextThreadCreateOptions | ForumThreadCreateOptions, mixing is a compile error (type test added)
1e rateLimitPerUser, autoArchiveDuration Valid for threads and posts in discord.js and in the API No change, documented as shared options
1f startMessage of GuildTextThreadManager; type forced to an announcement thread in announcement channels Here a thread from a message is message.startThread(); an explicit type is honoured in announcement channels Documented difference (README, TSDoc)
2a DM fetch, send, edit, delete, pin, unpin Work through the same paths as discord.js's DMMessageManager; messages have guildId === null, no member No change, tests added for every cache mode
2b DM crosspost, bulkDelete, startThread Sent to Discord, which always refuses (crosspostable/threadable already return false for DMs) Fixed: ChannelMessagesGuildOnly thrown before any request when the manager belongs to a DM or group DM
2c Group DM send GroupDMChannel has send/messages while discord.js's PartialGroupDMChannel has no send (bots cannot use group DMs) Documented, no change (Discord is the authority)
2d Managers built by hand or client.messages.* Cannot know the channel type synchronously Documented: they send the request and Discord refuses it
3a crosspost typing crosspost(messageId: string): Promise<Message>; discord.js takes a MessageResolvable and resolves to Message. Same convention as delete/pin/edit of ChannelMessageManager Documented difference, type test added
3b ChannelManager#createMessage No such method; client.messages.send(channelId, string | options | MessagePayload) and channel.send resolve to Message Documented difference, type test added. JSONEncodable and FileBodyEncodable bodies of discord.js are not accepted
4 rawFetchGuildActiveThreads Still absent; ChannelThreadManager#fetchActive covers the public part Left out: no consumer

Status of the checklist of #216 against main (verified in the code):

Type of Change

  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • Documentation change
  • Workflow / CI change

The options that used to be dropped now throw, and ThreadCreateOptions is a union: code that only passed valid options is unaffected.

Pre-flight Checklist

  • I have read the Contributing Guidelines (if applicable)
  • My code follows the code style of this project
  • I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or that my feature works
  • New and existing unit tests pass locally with my changes
  • I have updated the documentation accordingly
  • I added a changeset with pnpm changeset (or pnpm changeset add --empty if no release is needed). See .changeset/README.md.

Verification: pnpm build, pnpm typecheck and pnpm test (124 files, 1826 tests) pass locally; oxlint exits 0 with only the warnings main already has. oxfmt --check passes on the changed files (it fails for every file in my Windows checkout because of CRLF line endings, as it does on a clean tree).

Verification pass of #216 (section 5). threads.create now takes
TextThreadCreateOptions or ForumThreadCreateOptions and rejects the
options that do not apply to the channel type, instead of dropping them.
messages.crosspost, bulkDelete and startThread throw in direct messages
before any request.

  • The CLI's render reads .github/pr-lens.yml and applies your renames, exclusions and lane pins at draw time
  • Set github.comment.collapsed: true in .github/pr-lens.yml to fold the comment behind one View architecture and data flow row. Drawing still runs as before
  • Set github.draw: on-demand in .github/pr-lens.yml and PR Lens stops drawing pull requests on its own. Comment @pr-lens draw on a pull request when you want that one drawn
  • Add .github/workflows/pr-lens.yml with coldteadotai/pr-lens/packages/action@v0 and your model provider's key as its api-key to run PR Lens from your own CI. Any /chat/completions endpoint works

Reviewed changes — the full single-commit diff (11 files) of the thread options and guild-only message validation.

  • Typed thread options — ThreadCreateOptions is now TextThreadCreateOptions | ForumThreadCreateOptions, told apart by message, with the opposite kind's options typed ?: undefined.
  • Runtime option checks — ThreadManager#create throws ThreadOptionsPostOnly / ThreadOptionsThreadOnly before any request, and ChannelThreadManager#create adds ThreadPostMessageRequired and the channel-type check when the type is known.
  • Guild-only message paths — ChannelMessageManager takes an optional channelType, and crosspost, bulkDelete and startThread throw ChannelMessagesGuildOnly in DMs and group DMs. They are now async, so the error is a rejection, not a sync throw.
  • Wiring — ChannelThreadsMixin and TextChannelMixin pass this.type. Forum and media channels have no messages, and thread channels pass thread types, so nothing else is newly guarded. client.messages.* and hand-built managers stay unguarded, as documented.
  • Docs, changeset, tests — README differences from discord.js, a minor changeset, runtime tests for every cache mode, and a type test that tsconfig.consumption.json already includes.

Medium · Correctness

ChannelMessagesGuildOnly message calls a group DM ”a direct message”

assertGuild throws for ChannelType.GroupDM too, but the message built from ChannelMessagesGuildOnly always reads ”channel ‹id› is a direct message”, so a group direct message is reported as a DM, contradicting the check and the README that separates the two.

Fix: Take the channel kind (or the type) as an argument in ChannelMessagesGuildOnly and pass this.channelType from assertGuild, so a group DM says ”a group direct message”.
