Resolves #234

🧭 Context

With the fetch* twins deprecated by #172, a role-hierarchy or permission check that must not under-report had no single call that was both correct and not deprecated. roles.highest, member.permissions, manageable and the like skip a role the cache lacks, without an error, so with a filtered cache or a plugin-broker worker a lower-ranked member can pass a hierarchy check.

📚 Description

Option 1 and option 3 from the issue: the single-call checks stay, and the getters now say they skip uncached roles. No runtime change.

Departures from the Pullfrog plan: it asked whether to keep just the three methods named in the issue or the four hierarchy checks too. I kept only the three named in the issue. The other twins, including fetchManageable, fetchKickable, fetchBannable and fetchModeratable, stay deprecated as #172 decided; their getters now document that they skip uncached roles and point at roles.fetch(). Option 2 (a throwing getter / RoleUncached) is left out as the plan recommended; it would change discord.js parity and is better as an opt-in follow-up.

Key changes

  • Removed @deprecated from GuildMemberRoleManager#fetchHighest, GuildMember#fetchPermissions and #fetchPermissionsIn, documented as the calls that stay right on a cache miss.
  • Added @remarks on roles.highest, roles.cache, permissions, permissionsIn, manageable, kickable, bannable and moderatable saying uncached roles are skipped, with the fetch* call or await member.roles.fetch() as the fix.
  • README: the twins section now lists the kept calls with an example.
  • Test: with a member's only role evicted from the cache, the getters under-report (highest is @everyone, manageable is true) while fetchHighest, fetchPermissions and fetchPermissionsIn give the full answer.
  • Patch changeset for @wolfstar/plugin-gateway.

Type of Change

  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • Documentation change
  • Workflow / CI change

Pre-flight Checklist

  • I have read the Contributing Guidelines (if applicable)
  • My code follows the code style of this project
  • I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or that my feature works
  • New and existing unit tests pass locally with my changes
  • I have updated the documentation accordingly
  • I added a changeset with pnpm changeset (or pnpm changeset add --empty if no release is needed). See .changeset/README.md.

Verification: pnpm build, pnpm typecheck and pnpm test (1681 tests) pass; oxlint reports no errors. pnpm lint fails locally on oxfmt --check for every one of the 549 files, because this Windows checkout has CRLF line endings; the commit hook formatted the staged files.

…miss

Un-deprecate fetchHighest, fetchPermissions, fetchPermissionsIn and the
fetchManageable/Kickable/Bannable/Moderatable family, and document on the
getters that they skip roles missing from the cache.

🟠 mine and theirs are discarded · plugin-gateway/README.md:820-821

Correctness · plugin-gateway/README.md:820-821 · in Gateway Client & Managers

fetchHighest() fetches both roles into mine and theirs, then discards them; when either role is uncached, the example makes extra API requests without performing the hierarchy check it implies.

Fix: Use mine and theirs in a hierarchy comparison, or remove these fetches from the example.

🟠 top.roles.fetchHighest() warms the cache before the remaining assertions · tests/sync-getters.test.ts:289-290

Correctness · tests/sync-getters.test.ts:289-290 · in Vitest Test Runner

top.roles.fetchHighest() caches every guild role before the later fetch assertions run. Those assertions pass with a complete cache even if the other fetch methods stop handling cache misses.

Fix: Move the fetchHighest() assertion after the other fetch assertions, or remove the missing role from the cache before each assertion.

ℹ️ No critical issues — one small README inconsistency inline.

Reviewed changes: the single commit on this PR (docs, JSDoc and one test; no runtime change).

  • Un-deprecated fetch twins: GuildMemberRoleManager#fetchHighest and GuildMember#fetchPermissions, fetchPermissionsIn, fetchManageable, fetchKickable, fetchBannable, fetchModeratable lose @deprecated and gain @remarks explaining they stay right on a cache miss.
  • Getter remarks: roles.highest, roles.cache, permissions, permissionsIn, manageable, kickable, bannable and moderatable now say uncached roles are skipped without an error, with the fetch call as the fix.
  • README: the twins section lists the kept calls with an example.
  • Test: evicts a member's only role and asserts the getters under-report while the seven fetch calls are correct.
  • Changeset: patch for @wolfstar/plugin-gateway.

I checked the new doc claims against the code: roles.fetch() only calls roles.fetchAll when the cached count differs from the member's role IDs, so "a complete cache makes no request" holds, and fetchPermissions/fetchPermissionsIn do fetch the guild, channel and roles. The test exercises the claimed behaviour.

…chPermissionsIn

Re-deprecate the fetchManageable family, as in #172; only the three calls named in #234 stay.

ℹ️ No new issues in the latest commit; one earlier README note is still open.

Reviewed changes: the commit pushed since the prior Pullfrog review, which narrows the kept calls to the three named in the issue.

  • Narrowed the un-deprecated set: only GuildMemberRoleManager#fetchHighest, GuildMember#fetchPermissions and GuildMember#fetchPermissionsIn stay un-deprecated; fetchManageable, fetchKickable, fetchBannable and fetchModeratable return to their original deprecated JSDoc.
  • Repointed getter docs: manageable now recommends await member.roles.fetch() and me.roles.fetch(), or comparing fetchHighest of both; kickable, bannable and moderatable just say they skip uncached roles, like manageable.
  • README and changeset: both now list the three kept calls and advise roles.fetch() for the hierarchy getters.
  • Test: asserts the three kept calls are right on a cache miss, then await top.roles.fetch() makes manageable correct. sync-getters.test.ts passes locally (45 tests).

The README line 807 note from the first review (it names fetchPermissions() as a deprecated twin, although that one is now kept) is unchanged by this commit, so I left that thread open rather than repeating it.

✅ No new issues found.

Reviewed changes: the commit pushed since the prior Pullfrog review (docs only).

  • README examples fixed: the twins paragraph now names only twins that stay deprecated (fetchKickable(), fetchDeletable(), fetchEditable()), so "Most twins are deprecated" no longer contradicts the kept-calls paragraph below it. This resolves the earlier open README thread.
