Transcode Nag is a Jellyfin plugin that warns users when playback is transcoding because their client does not support the media format well enough to direct play or direct stream it.
It is intentionally selective:
- It nags for format and codec compatibility problems.
- It does not nag for bitrate-only transcodes where the user intentionally reduced quality.
- It can nag during playback and again on login if a user keeps triggering bad transcodes.
- It can exclude specific users entirely.
Use this plugin if you want to push users toward better Jellyfin clients such as Jellyfin Media Player, mpv, or VLC without punishing people who are only lowering bitrate to save bandwidth.
- Playback nags are sent once per video.
- Login nags are based on stored transcode history.
- History is kept for up to 30 days.
- A later direct play or direct stream suppresses future login nags until the user bad-transcodes again.
