📚 Description

  1. Joiner placement in TrainCase (TrainCase type should insert joiners between capitalized tokens #110):
    Previously, TrainCase passed Joiner as the accumulator parameter into CapitalizedWords, which caused the joiner to be prepended to the whole string (e.g. "-FooBar" instead of "Foo-Bar"). This PR introduces JoinCapitalizedWords (mirroring JoinLowercaseWords) to correctly insert the delimiter between tokens when Accumulator is non-empty.

  2. Normalize option propagation (feat(types): infer normalization in trainCase and titleCase options #146):

  • In TrainCase, Normalize is now forwarded to JoinCapitalizedWords across both string and array generic branches.
  • In pascalCase, updated the overload parameter type from opts?: CaseOptions to opts?: UserCaseOptions so TypeScript infers the exact options type without widening to the default.
  1. Type tests:
    Added type test coverage for TrainCase (string literals, array tuples, custom joiners, and normalization flag inference) in test/types.test-d.ts.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added TitleCase type support for title-cased strings, including lowercase exception words after the first word.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Title case now preserves the original casing of an exception word when it appears first.
    • Improved TypeScript return types for pascalCase, titleCase, and trainCase, including inference for normalization, string and array inputs, separators, and empty words.
    • Calls to trainCase and titleCase with normalization enabled now infer literal result types.

Resolves unjs#110
Resolves unjs#146

- Introduce JoinCapitalizedWords in types.ts to properly insert joiner delimiters between capitalized tokens in TrainCase instead of prefixing the accumulator
- Pass Normalize option through to string and array generic branches of TrainCase
- Update pascalCase overload parameter type to UserCaseOptions to preserve normalization flag inference
- Add comprehensive type test suite for TrainCase and option inference in test/types.test-d.ts

Walkthrough

TrainCase type joining and option inference are updated. A TitleCase type is added, and titleCase now handles first-word exception casing differently. Type assertions and a runtime test cover these changes.

Changes: Case Type Inference

Layer / File(s) Summary
Case type construction
src/types.ts, test/types.test-d.ts
Recursive helpers join capitalized words and apply title-case exception rules. TrainCase uses the capitalized-word helper. The exported TitleCase type joins words with spaces. Type assertions cover inputs, separators, normalization, empty words, and title-case exceptions.
Public signatures and runtime title-case behavior
src/index.ts, test/scule.test.ts
The pascalCase options parameter uses UserCaseOptions, and titleCase returns TitleCase. Runtime titleCase lowercases exception words only after the first word. Tests cover inferred return types and the first-word output for "and_foo".

Explanation

[#110] Met. In head src/types.ts, JoinCapitalizedWords skips empty tokens (F extends ""). It places Joiner only between tokens when Accumulator is non-empty. TrainCase calls this helper for string and array inputs, so the joiner is no longer a prefix. Runtime trainCase in src/index.ts uses .filter(Boolean) and .join("-"), which matches the type-level result. [#146] Met. trainCase, pascalCase, and titleCase in src/index.ts take opts?: UserCaseOptions, where UserCaseOptions extends CaseOptions. A call such as trainCase('WWW-authenticate', { normalize: true }) infers UserCaseOptions as { normalize: true }. The return type then narrows to TrainCase<T, true>. This meets the inference goal without the overloads suggested in the issue. TrainCase forwards Normalize through JoinCapitalizedWords in both branches. The pascalCase overload now uses opts?: UserCaseOptions, as the PR states. Type tests for these cases are reported in test/types.test-d.ts. I did not read that test file, so the test coverage rests on the PR description and the earlier assessment. The whole-PR src/types.ts diff was unavailable. I read the head file content directly instead. Runtime and type behavior for title-case exceptions match: both use case-insensitive exception matching, and both skip empty tokens before the index check.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes support [#110] and [#146]. The JoinCapitalizedWords and TrainCase changes fix joiner placement and normalization forwarding. The pascalCase overload change addresses the inference requirement in [#146]. titleCase now returns the new TitleCase type, which needs its own type-level joiner and exception rules. These rules match the runtime titleCase behavior. The runtime change i > 0 && titleCaseExceptions.test(p) makes a leading exception word capitalized, for example and_foo now gives And Foo. This is a visible runtime behavior change. It is not named in the issue text. It is connected to the titleCase output type that [#146] covers. The commit message and the PR comments state its purpose, and test/scule.test.ts adds the matching case. The TitleCase type and TitleCaseExceptions are needed for this consistency. No unrelated change is shown in src/index.ts.

- Filter out empty tokens in JoinCapitalizedWords so consecutive delimiters (e.g. foo--bar) do not produce double joiners
- Add TitleCase type with TitleCaseExceptions matching runtime article/conjunction handling
- Update titleCase signature to return TitleCase<T, Normalize>
- Add comprehensive type-level assertions for TitleCase and empty-word skipping

Updated with the latest commit:

  • JoinCapitalizedWords now filters out empty tokens (F extends "") so strings with consecutive splitters (e.g. foo--bar) properly evaluate to "Foo-Bar", matching runtime .filter(Boolean) behavior.
  • Added a dedicated TitleCase<T, Normalize> type with TitleCaseExceptions to preserve lowercase conjunctions/articles (a, an, and, etc.) except for the initial token, matching runtime titleCase.
  • Added corresponding type-level assertions in test/types.test-d.ts.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Capitalize an initial title-case exception at runtime.

JoinTitleCaseWords infers TitleCase<"and_foo", true> as "And Foo", and the type test requires that result. However, titleCase applies titleCaseExceptions to the first token and returns "and Foo". This makes the exported function return a value that disagrees with its declared literal type.

Suggested fix
-    .map((p) =>
-      titleCaseExceptions.test(p)
+    .map((p, i) =>
+      i > 0 && titleCaseExceptions.test(p)

Pushed an update ensuring titleCase capitalizes the initial token at runtime even if it matches titleCaseExceptions (i > 0 && titleCaseExceptions.test(p)), aligning runtime behavior with the JoinTitleCaseWords type-level inference and adding corresponding unit tests in test/scule.test.ts.
