Pattern Ideas

NOTE: Put patterns in a new *.pde file to minimize merge conflicts. LX uses Java Reflection to auto-register patterns so as long as you are a subclass of LXPattern you will show up automatically. Black and white patterns can be multiplied by pure color patterns. Black and white patterns should have @LXCategory(LXCategory.FORM) annotations before the class declaration. Colorizations should have @LXCategory(LXCategory.COLOR). I have also been marking classes with their own colorization (such as animated gifs) as FORM classes. Black and white might also be classified as TEXTURE. The options are COLOR, FORM, TEXTURE, TEST, OTHER.

Add pattern ideas here.

There are a some basic patterns that can be implemented to help build bigger effects. This also includes various ideas mentioned from team members.

  • Twinkling stars FORM pattern. Just renders in white. See the PatternStarlight example from Tenere for some idea of how to make them dynamic.
  • Basic geometric shapes with size parameters and then tiled into 420x30. Squares, circles, diamonds. Implement either directly with points and colors array or extend PGPixelPerfect and rendering with Processing? Size parameter can then be mapped to LFO or audio meter.
  • More interesting color tilings and various plaids.
  • Pong. Use MIDI key codes from MIDI keyboard for up/down for 2 players. Maybe 4 player pong? Make ball speed adjustable. See if straight 420x30 rendering works. Maybe the bend distortion is ok and just adds some trippy-ness.
  • Combine MIDI keyboard with fluid emitters?
  • "Horse" racing game? Whoever presses the keys fast enough. Maybe just split keyboard in half so whole teams can play. Maybe fill up the arch from both sides with colors and whichever team reaches the top first wins.
  • Bouncing balls/physics. Maybe particle flow from PixelFlow? Ball size needs to be big enough to register on the screen.
  • Game of Life. Needs to be initialized randomly and also a mode initialized with known initial states that generate interesting patterns (aka gliders, etc.)
  • Respond specifically to voice frequencies. Light up arch. Maybe Simon Says with tone generator and then person has to try to repeat the notes vocally. Starts off super easy, like just a low tone and high tone and then when you pass that level does low tone, mid tone, high tone and then progressing to those lucky people with perfect pitch.
  • Streaks of lines. Implement as a gray scale FORM pattern and then multiply times color pattern? Start with points accelerating into lines for a warp effect? parameter for controlling speed. Horizontal and vertical lines in physical space will need to extend PGTexture and then be sampled onto the rainbow. Implies some necessary thickness for the lines. If bend distortion is okay, single LED wide lines are okay.
  • Any form of pixel perfect 420x30 animated gif (load via RainbowGifPP). Note other sizes can be loaded, they will just be scaled to fit.
  • Any from of sampled texture animated gif 528x264 (load via RainbowGif). Note other sizes can be loaded, they will just be scaled to fit.
  • Audio-responsive patterns
  • Shadertoy patterns (glsl)
  • Shadertoy Audio patterns (glsl)
  • Tiled images/animated gifs for Pixel Perfect mode
  • Tiled images/animated gifs for texture mode
  • Glitch Aesthetics, intentionally write buggy code for amazing surprises!
  • Animated math, geometry, or algorithms
