Read actual MySQL session isolation per physical connection after DSN initialization; matching explicit transactions avoid a redundant SET.
Preserve pooled and dedicated-session semantics: mismatches remain transaction-scoped, db_default remains untouched, and replacement connections initialize independently. Older MySQL/MariaDB endpoints use tx_isolation when the native server reports the newer variable unknown. Unsupported returned levels keep the connection usable with explicit overrides.
Invalidate cached knowledge after visible session-changing or opaque SQL, including each prepared execution. Refresh before the next explicit transaction while preserving possible next-transaction overrides. Quoted semicolons do not imply multiple statements; ambiguous quoting/comments invalidate conservatively.
Document the requirement that workload stored functions and triggers preserve session isolation, since these hidden side effects cannot be inferred from ordinary SELECT/DML. Use visible SET or transaction options instead.
Preserve other drivers native semantics: PostgreSQL-compatible drivers combine isolation with BEGIN; YDB keeps native transaction-mode mapping; Picodata rejects driver-managed transactions.

MySQL skips redundant transaction-isolation settings when a transaction matches the connection’s known session default, reducing unnecessary round trips. Explicit isolation overrides remain supported.
Reliability
Session-changing or unclassified SQL invalidates the cached session default, so it is checked again before the optimization is reused.
Documentation
Added guidance on transaction-isolation behavior across supported database drivers and session types, including MySQL session defaults and isolation overrides.
The MySQL driver now reads session isolation for each physical connection. It uses default transaction options when the requested level matches the known session level. Connection and prepared-statement execution invalidate cached isolation when SQL may change session state.

Summary
Discover isolation and choose transaction options pkg/driver/mysql/isolation.go, pkg/driver/mysql/driver.go, pkg/driver/mysql/isolation_test.go
The connector reads session isolation when it opens a physical connection. It falls back to tx_isolation only for MySQL error 1193. The connection wrapper refreshes unknown state and uses default transaction options when the requested level matches the known level. Unit tests cover probing, fallback behavior, and transaction options.
Track SQL that may change session isolation pkg/driver/mysql/isolation.go, pkg/driver/mysql/isolation_test.go, docs/workload-authoring-api.md, CHANGELOG.md
Connection and prepared-statement execution observe SQL. The wrapper invalidates cached isolation for empty, ambiguous, or unrecognized statements. Tests cover invalidation, refreshed probes, and recognized query fast paths. The documentation and changelog describe the isolation behavior and session-changing SQL constraint.
Validate isolation behavior across backends test/integration/isolation_test.go
Integration tests cover connection-string isolation settings, transaction isolation and visibility, serializable read locking, and whether matching MySQL isolation avoids repeated SET statements.
stroppy-io/stroppy#250: The change skips the extra isolation-setting round trip when the requested level matches the physical connection’s known session default.

Explanation
The title "fix(mysql): avoid redundant transaction isolation round trips" matches the main change. The raw summary and PR objectives both describe skipping the redundant isolation SET when an explicit transaction requests the level already active on the physical MySQL connection. The title names the scope (mysql) and the effect (fewer round trips). It is concise, has no file list or emoji, and a teammate scanning history would understand the primary change.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain connected to [#250]. The MySQL connection wrapper and driver integration implement session-isolation caching. The unit and integration tests cover initialization, fallback, pooling, visibility, invalidation, and redundant SET behavior. The documentation and changelog describe the same behavior and its stored-function and trigger constraint. No unrelated functional change is demonstrated.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#250] requires omitting the MySQL transaction-level SET when the requested isolation matches the active session level. The connection wrapper implements this when known is true. However, after opaque SQL sets known to false, BeginTx refreshes the session level but does not compare the refreshed level with opts.Isolation. It therefore still sends the explicit isolation SET even when the refreshed level matches. A CALL path can consequently add a refresh query and retain the extra SET, so the issue's stated procedure case remains unresolved.
Resolution
After a successful refresh in BeginTx, apply the same equality check used for a known cache and pass sql.LevelDefault when the requested level matches the refreshed session level. Add a regression for opaque SQL or CALL followed by a matching explicit transaction. Verify that the transaction does not increase Com_set_option.

observe clears the cached isolation for any ;, including one inside a string literal. SELECT 'a;b' therefore forces the next non-default transaction to run a session probe and a SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL statement, although the session level did not change. Update the semicolon check in observe to detect statement separators outside
quoted text, so semicolons inside string literals do not clear the cached
isolation while genuine multi-statement SQL still does. Reuse any existing
quote-aware SQL scanning utility if available; otherwise add the smallest scan
that respects the SQL quoting forms supported by this driver.

Add a test that reconnects through one connector after the session level changes.
TestIsolationConnectorReadsEachPhysicalConnection creates a new connector for each loop value and calls Connect once on it. No test in this package calls Connect twice through the same connector after the session level changes. A regression that caches the first probe result on the connector would still pass, because both loop values are REPEATABLE-READ.
Extend the loop so that, after the first Connect, it changes backend.value to a different level, calls Connect again on the same connector, and checks that the next explicit transaction sends the override. Keep the existing assertions for the first connection.

Extend TestIsolationConnectorReadsEachPhysicalConnection to reconnect through
the same connector after the first connection: change the backend’s reported
isolation level, call Connect again, and verify the next explicit transaction
sends the appropriate isolation override. Preserve the existing first-connection
assertions and ensure the test detects connector-level caching of the initial
probe result.
Cover the prepared-statement wrapping in the invalidation test.
Cover the prepared-statement wrapping in the invalidation test.
TestPreparedExecutionInvalidatesIsolationEachTime builds isolationStatement directly. It never calls isolationConnection.Prepare or PrepareContext, which wrap the backend statement. If either method returned the raw backend statement, this test would still pass. The integration prepared-session tests call Prepare but do not check isolation after a prepared SET, so no test detects that regression.
The current wrapping is correct. Route the test through isolationConnection.PrepareContext to create the statement, and keep the existing assertions on known and the recorded transaction isolation values.

Make the MySQL isolation assertions observe the level applied to each transaction.
Make the MySQL isolation assertions observe the level applied to each transaction.
For MySQL, the assertions do not detect a dropped override. @@SESSION.transaction_isolation is expected to stay read committed. tx.Isolation() returns the level passed to Begin, which session.go stores without checking the driver. A driver that ignores a repeatable-read or serializable override still passes these checks. TestMySQLDSNIsolationAndPooledTransactions has the same gap.
Add a check whose result depends on the applied level. For example, under REPEATABLE READ, a consistent read in an explicit transaction should not show a row that another session commits after the first read. Under READ COMMITTED, the same read should show that row. Use this difference for the MySQL override cases. Keep the existing session-default assertion, which covers the requirement that overrides do not change the session default.

Update the MySQL isolation checks in the transaction tests, including
TestMySQLDSNIsolationAndPooledTransactions, to verify the applied isolation
behavior rather than relying on tx.Isolation(). In the override cases, compare
visibility of a row committed by another session after the transaction’s first
consistent read: it must remain invisible under REPEATABLE READ and become
visible under READ COMMITTED. Preserve the existing session-default assertion.

Pin the PostgreSQL session isolation in the visibility test.
The unspecified case expects the external update to be visible. That holds only when the server default is Read Committed. The test does not enforce that default. When STROPPY_PG_URL points to a server configured with Repeatable Read, the unspecified transaction keeps its snapshot, the read returns the old value, and the assertion fails. Add an explicit Read Committed session setting to the PostgreSQL connection URL, as the MySQL branch already does with transaction_isolation.

Review comment at @test/integration/isolation_test.go around lines 127 - 131:
Update the PostgreSQL connection setup used by the visibility test to explicitly
set the session isolation level to Read Committed in the connection URL,
matching the MySQL branch’s `transaction_isolation` setup. Ensure the setting
applies to the PostgreSQL test connection when `STROPPY_PG_URL` is used, so the
unspecified isolation case does not depend on the server default.
Add a MySQL Serializable check that observes the applied isolation level.
Add a MySQL Serializable check that observes the applied isolation level.
No MySQL test in this change observes the isolation level that MySQL applies to a Serializable transaction. TestTransactionIsolationVisibility covers only Repeatable Read, Read Committed, and Unspecified. The MySQL Serializable cases in TestTransactionIsolationSemantics and TestMySQLDSNIsolationAndPooledTransactions assert the session default and Tx.Isolation(). Tx.Isolation() returns the stored level, so a change that stops forwarding Serializable to MySQL still passes these assertions.
Add a Serializable case that checks an observable that differs from Read Committed. The visibility loop's expected value distinguishes only Repeatable Read from the other levels, so a Serializable case needs its own expectation.

Add a MySQL Serializable case to TestTransactionIsolationVisibility that
verifies the isolation level MySQL actually applies, rather than relying on the
stored value from Tx.Isolation(). Give Serializable its own expected visibility
behavior, distinct from Read Committed, and preserve the existing expectations
for other levels.

Add a PostgreSQL serializable conflict test.

Add a PostgreSQL serializable conflict test.
The visibility test appends TxIsolationLevelSerializable only for MySQL. Its serializable branch asserts MySQL lock-wait error 1205. PostgreSQL serializable transactions get no equivalent behavioral check. Their only integration check is the reported isolation value in TestTransactionIsolationSemantics.
Add a separate PostgreSQL test. It should run a serializable transaction against a concurrent conflicting write from a second session. It should assert the resulting PostgreSQL serialization failure. The existing unit tests cover only the 40001 error mapping, so this test would cover the database behavior that the driver surfaces.

The visibility test adds serializable isolation only for MySQL and its
assertions are MySQL-specific. Add a separate PostgreSQL integration test that
runs a serializable transaction alongside a conflicting write from a second
session and asserts the PostgreSQL serialization failure surfaced by the driver;
leave the existing MySQL-specific branch and isolation-value check unchanged.
