This theme is not on the VS Code Marketplace — it's distributed only through this GitHub repo. The sushi-theme-1.0.0.vsix file in the repo root is the install bundle (just a zip of the theme files; no marketplace involved).
git clone https://github.com/shushankai/sushi-theme.git
code --install-extension sushi-theme/sushi-theme-1.0.0.vsixThen reload VS Code (Developer: Reload Window from the command palette) and pick the theme:
Preferences: Color Theme → Sushi-Dark Theme
That's it. Works on macOS, Linux, and Windows — same command everywhere.
Why not just
cp -rthe folder? Modern VS Code (1.74+) tracks installed extensions in a registry file (~/.vscode/extensions/extensions.json). Manually copying a folder doesn't update that registry, so VS Code silently ignores it.code --install-extensionis the official way to install a local extension and writes the registry correctly.
cd sushi-theme
git pull
code --install-extension sushi-theme-1.0.0.vsix --force--force lets you reinstall over the existing version.
If you're tweaking the theme:
- Open the cloned
sushi-themefolder in VS Code. - Press
F5(or Run → Start Debugging) — a new VS Code window opens with your in-progress theme loaded. - Edit
themes/sushi-color-theme.jsonin your main window, reload the dev-host window to see changes.
When you're happy, rebuild the bundled VSIX so others can pull the update:
npx --yes @vscode/vsce package --allow-missing-repository --no-dependenciesCommit the new .vsix alongside the JSON change.
code --uninstall-extension sushi.sushi-themeThis theme is built on the shoulders of two great defaults:
- Warp Terminal — Dark Theme — true-black background and terminal ANSI color palette
- VS Code — Dark+ Theme — syntax highlighting colors and semantic token mappings
