[Feature]: Tasker integration to change settings #1535

Closed

Description

@Zatker

Problem Statement

I would like to be able to change certain Essentials settings based on what app I'm using. The automations feature in Essentials has some options, but not what I am currently looking for, and Tasker allows for much more complicated triggers too.

Proposed Solution

Create a Tasker plugin which allows toggling any setting based on specified conditions.

Alternatives Considered

An alternative that would be less convenient to use but I believe easier to implement is to expose a receiver that can receive external intents to toggle settings that way.

Priority

Medium - Would improve my experience

Contribution

  • I would be willing to implement this feature

Additional Context

A mockup of a tasker Send Intent that I would like to be able to use:

This is already possible with an intent, no plugin needed.

Essentials accepts a broadcast that toggles or sets any of its settings. In Tasker, use Send Intent:

    • Action: com.sameerasw.essentials.action.EXTERNAL_CONTROL
    • Package: com.sameerasw.essentials
    • Target: Broadcast Receiver
    • Extras:
      • path:settings/<setting_key>
      • action:toggle (flips an on/off setting), or action:update together with value:<new value>

Example, to flip a setting called island_dismiss_on_outside:

    path:settings/island_dismiss_on_outside
    action:toggle

    Example, to set a value:

    path:settings/island_dismiss_on_outside
    action:update
    value:true

    Notes:

    • <setting_key> is the setting's internal name, and the setting must already exist in the app's preferences. Setting types (on/off, text, numbers) follow the type already stored.
    • The receiver is protected by the permission com.sameerasw.essentials.permission.EXTERNAL_CONTROL, so Tasker needs to be granted it.
    • Some features read their setting only when they start, so a change may not show until the feature restarts.

A proper Tasker plugin with per-app conditions isn't available, only this intent.

Hmm doesn't seem to be working. Tasker has external control because I'm using it for other apps. I saw that the toggle didn't change which you said can happen, so I tried to see if it was changed under the hood, and it still doesn't dismiss on outside activity.

didn't catch the target in the screenshot, but it is set to broadcast receiver.
