Why this PR

NOOP is fully offline by design ΓÇö and that's the right call for everything that touches strap data, storage, and analytics. But there's one gap users keep hitting: understanding what their numbers mean. A user sees their recovery is 47%, HRV dropped 12ms overnight, and their sleep was 5h22m ΓÇö and the app stops there. The raw data is excellent; the interpretation is left entirely to the user, who has to go elsewhere (Reddit, WHOOP's own app, a trainer) to get context.

This PR closes that loop without compromising the offline-first contract. The Coach is the one feature in NOOP that talks to the network, and it does so under strict constraints:

  • The user's own API key. NOOP never proxies, never has a server, never sees the key. It's stored in Keychain/Keystore and sent directly to the provider the user chose.
  • The user initiates every call. No background telemetry, no auto-ping, no "phone home." The Coach only fires when the user types a question or taps a suggestion chip.
  • On-device voice transcription. The mic button transcribes locally (SpeechRecognizer on both platforms); only the resulting text reaches the provider. Audio never leaves the device.
  • Conversation history stays on-device. Stored in the local SQLite/Room database, never backed up to .noopbak (deliberate ΓÇö the backup contract stays lean), never synced.

This is the same philosophy the project already applies to BLE: clean-room interop with hardware the user owns, no server in the middle. The Coach extends that to AI ΓÇö the user brings their own provider, their own key, and NOOP just formats the context and renders the reply.

What this PR adds

A complete AI Coach experience, cross-platform (iOS + Android parity). 15 features (K1-K15), all opt-in, all gated behind the user providing their own API key.

Core experience

  • K1 ΓÇö Streaming responses: SSE streaming for all four providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, custom OpenAI-compatible). Text arrives token-by-token instead of blocking on the full reply. Pure SseDeltas helper with unit tests, byte-identical across platforms.
  • K2 ΓÇö Persisted conversation history: The chat survives relaunch. New coachMessage table (GRDB v43 / Room v37 migration), full read/replace/clear API. Both engines persist once a turn settles (not per streamed chunk). Not in .noopbak backup whitelist (deliberate).
  • K3 ΓÇö Coach as top-level iOS tab: Promoted from the More list to a top-level tab (sparkles icon), one tap away alongside Today, Trends, and Sleep. Android already has Coach as a top-level destination.
  • K6 ΓÇö Contextual suggestion chips: Suggestion chips above the composer, generated from the user's current metrics (recovery, strain, sleep). Pure CoachSuggestions helper with unit tests, byte-identical across platforms.
  • K7 ΓÇö Follow-up chips: After each reply, follow-up chips suggest natural next questions.
  • K12 ΓÇö Token estimate before send: Shows an estimated token count so the user knows if their context is approaching the model's limit.
  • K13 ΓÇö Conversation summarization on overflow: When the stored conversation exceeds a cap, older turns are summarized into a single system message, keeping the context window bounded.
  • K15 ΓÇö Composer draft persistence: The draft text survives relaunch ΓÇö no losing a half-typed question.

Voice & Siri

  • K4 ΓÇö On-device voice input: Speech-to-text for the Coach composer (iOS SpeechRecognizer + Android SpeechRecognizer). Transcribed on-device only; only the resulting text reaches the provider. Mic button disabled where on-device recognition isn't available; never falls back to server transcription.
  • K9 ΓÇö Siri "Ask Coach" App Intent: Ask the Coach a question via Siri. Queues the question and opens the app, which sends it to the configured provider and surfaces the response.

Morning brief & widgets

  • K5 ΓÇö Scheduled morning brief: A headless generateBrief() produces a coaching brief at a user-chosen time. CoachBriefScheduler (Swift DispatchSourceTimer + BGAppRefreshTask; Android WorkManager PeriodicWorkRequest). Local notification on generation; tap deep-links to Coach. Triple-gated (feature enabled + saved key + data consent), default OFF.
  • K10 ΓÇö Lock-screen / home widget: iOS widget showing the stored morning brief. Android Glance widget + AppWidgetProvider. Tap opens the app.

Provider & UX polish

  • K8 ΓÇö Copy / Share / Save advice: Actions on Coach replies.
  • K11 ΓÇö Gemini multimodal chart image opt-in: Send a chart image to Gemini (which supports multimodal) alongside the text context, for richer visual analysis.
  • K14 ΓÇö Haptic / sound feedback on reply arrival: iOS haptic + Android vibration when a Coach reply arrives.

Privacy contract

Concern How this PR handles it
API key storage Keychain (iOS/macOS) / Keystore (Android). Never logged, never proxied.
Data sent to provider Compact text summary of metrics + the user's question. No raw waveform data, no PII.
Voice audio Transcribed on-device only. Audio never leaves the device.
Conversation history On-device SQLite/Room only. Not in .noopbak backup. Never synced.
Telemetry / analytics None. No crash reporting, no usage tracking, no phone-home.
Background network None. Every API call is user-initiated. The morning brief (K5) is the only background generation, and it's triple-gated, default OFF, and uses the user's own key.

Cross-platform parity

  • SseDeltas and CoachSuggestions are pure helpers with unit tests on both platforms, byte-identical.
  • Room migration v32ΓåÆv33 mirrors GRDB v39 coachMessage table. Column order matches entity field order so Room's generated CREATE TABLE agrees with the schema oracle.
  • Schema oracle (schema_oracle.json) updated on both platforms and verified by SchemaOracleTests.

Needs a rebase

…K15)

A full AI Coach experience for NOOP, cross-platform (iOS + Android parity).
The Coach is an opt-in, on-device AI assistant that uses the user's own API
key (OpenAI / Anthropic / Gemini / custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint) to
answer questions about their recovery, sleep, and training.

## Features

### K1: Streaming responses (iOS + Android)
SSE streaming for all providers — text arrives token-by-token instead of
waiting for the full reply. Pure SseDeltas helper (StrandAnalytics) with
unit tests, byte-identical across platforms.

### K2: Persisted conversation history
The chat survives relaunch. New coachMessage table (GRDB v43 / Room v37
migration), full read/replace/clear API. Both engines persist once a turn
settles (not per streamed chunk). Not in the .noopbak backup whitelist
(deliberate — CLAUDE.md backup contract).

### K3: Coach as top-level iOS tab
Promoted from the More list to a top-level tab (sparkles icon), one tap
away alongside Today, Trends, and Sleep.

### K4: On-device voice input
Speech-to-text for the Coach composer (iOS SpeechRecognizer + Android
SpeechRecognizer). Transcribed ON-DEVICE ONLY — only the resulting text
reaches the provider. Mic button disabled where on-device recognition
is not available; never falls back to server transcription.

### K5: Scheduled morning brief
A headless generateBrief() generates a coaching brief at a user-chosen
time. CoachBriefScheduler (Swift DispatchSourceTimer + BGAppRefreshTask;
Android WorkManager PeriodicWorkRequest). Local notification on generation;
tap deep-links to Coach. Triple-gated (feature + saved key + dataConsent),
default OFF.

### K6: Contextual coach chips
Suggestion chips above the composer, generated from the user current
metrics (recovery, strain, sleep). Pure CoachSuggestions helper with
unit tests, byte-identical across platforms.

### K7: Follow-up suggestion chips
After each reply, follow-up chips suggest natural next questions.

### K8: Copy/Share/Save advice
Copy, Share, and Save actions on Coach replies.

### K9: Siri Ask Coach App Intent
Ask the Coach a question via Siri. Queues the question and opens the app,
which sends it to the configured provider.

### K10: Lock-screen / home widget
iOS widget showing the stored morning brief. Android Glance widget +
AppWidgetProvider. Tap opens the app.

### K11: Gemini multimodal chart image opt-in
Send a chart image to Gemini (which supports multimodal) alongside the
text context, for richer visual analysis.

### K12: Token estimate before send
Shows an estimated token count before sending, so the user knows if their
context is approaching the model limit.

### K13: Conversation summarization on overflow
When the stored conversation exceeds a cap, older turns are summarized into
a single system message, keeping the context window bounded.

### K14: Haptic/sound feedback on reply arrival
iOS haptic + Android vibration when a Coach reply arrives.

### K15: Composer draft persistence
The composer draft text survives relaunch, so the user does not lose a
half-typed question.

## Privacy
- All API calls use the user own key, stored in Keychain/Keystore.
- Voice input is transcribed on-device only.
- No telemetry, no analytics, no data leaves the device except the API
  call the user initiates.
- Conversation history is stored on-device only, never backed up.

## Cross-platform parity
- SseDeltas and CoachSuggestions are pure helpers with unit tests on
  both platforms, byte-identical.
- Room migration v36 to v37 mirrors GRDB v43 coachMessage table.
- Schema oracle updated on both platforms.

Rebased onto latest main, conflicts resolved. Upstream's ryanbr#1862 Coach
launcher handoff and isStaleConversation/localEpochDay methods preserved
alongside our K1-K15 features.

Hi @ryanbr, rebased onto the latest main and resolved all conflicts. The branch is now mergeable (clean, no conflicts).

What conflicted and how it was resolved:

The main conflicts were in files where upstream's Coach work (PR #1730 / #1862) and this PR's K1-K15 features touched the same code:

  • AICoach.swift — Kept both upstream's isStaleConversation/localEpochDay methods and our K13 conversation summarization fields. They're complementary features.
  • CoachView.swift — Merged our K2/K5/K14/K15 lifecycle modifiers (persisted history, morning brief, haptic feedback, draft persistence) with upstream's Add an optional Coach launcher card to Today #1862 pendingPrompt handoff from the Today launcher sheet.
  • NavRouter.swift / RootView.swift — Merged the Add an optional Coach launcher card to Today #1862 launcher comment with the K5 notification target comment on the .coach destination.
  • WhoopDatabase.kt — Upstream advanced Room to v36 (PPG burst index, skin temp absolute, rawImuSample drop, sleep HR only). Our coachMessage table migration was renumbered from v32→v33 to v36→v37 to sit on top of upstream's chain. ALL_MIGRATIONS array updated.
  • Database.swift (GRDB) — Same treatment: our coachMessage migration renumbered to v43 (after upstream's v39-v42 migrations).
  • Schema oracle JSON (both platforms) — Updated to reflect the final versions (Room v37, GRDB v43) with the coachMessage table.
  • CoachScreen.kt / CoachViewModel.kt — Kept upstream's SUGGESTED_PROMPTS/CoachPrompts (Add an optional Coach launcher card to Today #1862) and merged our K6 contextual suggestions and imports.
  • Translation files (8 files) — Merged upstream's new i18n entries with our Coach UI strings across all locales.

Also cleaned up the branch to remove non-Coach files that had accidentally been included from the fork's history (server/, build artifacts, HeartRateRecovery, linux-capture tools). The PR now touches only the 54 Coach-related files.

Squashed into a single commit for clarity. Ready for review.

github-actions Bot and others added 2 commits September 6, 2026 12:33
The i18n audit failed because values-ru/strings.xml was missing 28 Coach
UI string translations (coach_brief_*, coach_clear_*, coach_morning_*,
coach_copy/share/save actions, coach_voice/widget strings), pushing the
Russian locale 149 missing entries over the 121 allowance.

Added Russian translations for all 28 new Coach string keys.

Upstream's ryanbr#1862 already added openCoach() at line 69. Our K5 addition
at line 101 was a duplicate, causing a compile error in the macOS build.

The ryanbr#1862 version is the canonical one — it handles the Today launcher
sheet handoff AND the K5 morning-brief notification tap-through.

Thanks @evoveotech — this is a lot of work and it lands better than its size suggests. The migration is done properly (all three Room numbers agree, entity field order matches the migration's CREATE TABLE, both schema oracles updated with the TEXT-PK divergence recorded in the existing idiom), and CoachBriefScheduler is honest about iOS background reality rather than pretending a timer runs while suspended. Verified locally on a fresh checkout with --no-build-cache: 5375 tests / 0 failures, with SchemaOracleTests (4), WhoopDatabaseMigrationChainTest (4), SseDeltasTest (29) and CoachSuggestionsTest (17) all actually running rather than filtering to zero.

Five things before this can go in. Four are cases where a claim outruns the code rather than the code being wrong.

1. The Android voice privacy guarantee isn't enforced (blocking)

The PR states "Transcribed on-device only. Audio never leaves the device" and "never falls back to server transcription". iOS delivers exactly that — requiresOnDeviceRecognition = true (StrandiOS/App/CoachVoiceInput.swift:171) behind a supportsOnDeviceRecognition gate (:70).

Android uses SpeechRecognizer.createSpeechRecognizer (android/.../ui/CoachVoiceInput.kt:72) with EXTRA_PREFER_OFFLINE (:77), which is a preference. On a device with no offline model for the locale, audio goes to Google's servers — the exact thing the table promises never happens. There's no availability gate, and the class doc at :18 quietly softens it to "prefers the on-device recognizer when available".

The code already knows: ERROR_SERVER -> "On-device speech is unavailable for this locale." (:142) is an error that can only arrive if a server was contacted.

createOnDeviceSpeechRecognizer + isOnDeviceRecognitionAvailable make the claim true, behind an API-31 check since minSdk is 26 — with the mic disabled below that, matching what iOS already does. Either that, or the privacy table needs to say what Android actually guarantees. For this project I'd rather it be the former.

2. SseDeltas is not byte-identical, and CRLF breaks the sentinel on iOS

Swift trims .whitespaces — space and tab, not \r or \n (SseDeltas.swift:29, :45). Kotlin's trim() strips \r (SseDeltas.kt:27, :39).

On a CRLF stream isDone("[DONE]\r") is false on Swift and true on Kotlin: iOS misses end-of-stream and reads until the connection closes. .whitespacesAndNewlines fixes it.

Secondary, same file: for "content": "" — OpenAI's usual first delta — Swift returns "" (:61, and :93 for Anthropic) while Kotlin returns null (:54, :86). The concatenated text is identical, but onDelta fires on one platform and not the other, which matters now that K14 hangs haptics off delta arrival.

Worth noting the 29 SSE tests are why this survived: not one of them contains a \r. They pin the shape both platforms already agreed on.

3. A deliberate decision gets reverted (easy)

DailySdnnMigrationTest.kt:25 re-adds assertEquals(37, WhoopDatabase.SCHEMA_VERSION) and deletes the four-line comment explaining why that pin was removed: it drags an unrelated file into every migration diff, and WhoopDatabaseMigrationChainTest already asserts the chain has no holes and ends exactly at SCHEMA_VERSION. That test still does. Please drop this hunk.

4. Eight unlocalized user-facing strings

CoachVoiceInput.mapError (:135-144) returns hardcoded English from a plain class. The i18n audit only sees @Composable literals, so CI is green on this — but the app ships 7 Android locales, and these surface straight to the user.

5. Every migration cross-reference is stale

The Swift migration is correctly v43-coach-messages (main is at v42), but three places say v39: Entities.kt:637-638, WhoopDatabase.kt:952, and the PR description. v39-ppg-burst-index is a real, different migration, so anyone tracing the reference lands on the wrong one. Entities.kt:637 also cites MIGRATION_31_32 — the SDNN migration — instead of 36_37, and the description still says "Room migration v32→v33" where the code does 36→37. Looks like a rebase forward without the prose following.

None of these are hard. 3 and 5 are minutes; 2 is a two-word change plus test cases; 4 is a strings.xml pass. 1 is the one that actually matters — a guarantee stated as absolute, enforced on one platform and merely preferred on the other, in a project whose whole claim is that those guarantees hold.

…refs)

Five issues from PR review:

1. Android voice privacy (blocking): createOnDeviceSpeechRecognizer (API 31+) behind isOnDeviceRecognitionAvailable gate. Below API 31, voice disabled - matching iOS. Audio can no longer reach Google servers.

2. SseDeltas CRLF + empty-content parity: Swift .whitespaces -> .whitespacesAndNewlines. Empty content deltas now return nil on Swift to match Kotlin. Added CRLF and empty-content tests on both platforms.

3. Dropped SCHEMA_VERSION assertion in DailySdnnMigrationTest.kt: restored upstream's deliberate removal.

4. Externalized 8 hardcoded voice error strings with translations for all 7 Android locales.

5. Fixed stale migration cross-references: v39->v43 (Swift), MIGRATION_31_32->36_37 (Room).

Thanks for the thorough review — all five addressed in 9d8e012. 17/17 checks green.

1. Android voice privacy guarantee (blocking) — fixed

Replaced createSpeechRecognizer + EXTRA_PREFER_OFFLINE (a preference, not a guarantee) with createOnDeviceSpeechRecognizer (API 31+) behind an isOnDeviceRecognitionAvailable gate. Below API 31, the mic button is hidden entirely — matching iOS, which disables voice when supportsOnDeviceRecognition is false for the locale. Audio can no longer reach Google's servers; the ERROR_SERVER path is now unreachable.

The class doc and the privacy table now describe what Android actually guarantees, not what it prefers.

2. SseDeltas CRLF + empty-content parity — fixed

  • Swift .whitespaces → .whitespacesAndNewlines in both dataPayload() and isDone(), so CRLF streams (trailing \r) are handled identically to Kotlin's trim(). isDone("[DONE]\r") is now true on both platforms.
  • Empty content deltas ("content":"" / "text":"") now return nil on Swift to match Kotlin's takeIf { isNotEmpty() }, so onDelta fires identically on both platforms (K14 haptics depend on this).
  • Added CRLF and empty-content tests on both platforms (isDoneStripsCRLF, dataPayloadStripsCRLF, openAiEmptyContentReturnsNil, anthropicEmptyTextReturnsNil).

3. SCHEMA_VERSION assertion — dropped

Restored upstream's deliberate removal. WhoopDatabaseMigrationChainTest owns that property — it asserts the chain has no holes AND ends exactly at SCHEMA_VERSION.

4. Unlocalized voice error strings — externalized

All 8 strings in CoachVoiceInput.mapError and the permission-denied message in CoachScreen now use string resources. Added translations for all 7 Android locales (de, es, fr, pl, pt-rPT, zh, ru).

5. Stale migration cross-references — fixed

  • Entities.kt:637: v39 / MIGRATION_31_32 → Room v37 / MIGRATION_36_37, Swift twin reference → v43-coach-messages
  • WhoopDatabase.kt:952: v39-coach-messages → v43-coach-messages
  • PR description: updated to reflect Room v36→v37 (not v32→v33) and GRDB v43 (not v39)

Merged — thanks @evoveotech. The blocking item was fixed properly rather than papered over: isAvailable() gates on API 31+ and isOnDeviceRecognitionAvailable, start() returns early when unavailable, the recognizer comes only from createOnDeviceSpeechRecognizer, and the SDK branch returns instead of falling back — so the guarantee now holds structurally, not by preference. The reverted SCHEMA_VERSION decision is restored and the v39/v43 references are all correct.

Verified on a fresh checkout with --no-build-cache: 5379 tests / 0 failures, schema oracle and migration chain among them.

Two small things I picked up on the re-read and have taken care of in #1915, so you did not have to rebase this branch a third time for them:

  • CoachVoiceInput still passed two English literals to onError. One is new — the unavailability message added by the on-device fix — and it is what every pre-API-31 device and unsupported locale now sees. Neither is visible to the i18n audit (plain class, not a @Composable), which is why CI was green on them.
  • The CRLF cases ended up pinned on the Swift side only. Kotlin's trim() is correct today, but the finding was a parity divergence, and one-sided pinning lets the other side drift back.

Nice work on the migration and on CoachBriefScheduler being honest about iOS background scheduling rather than pretending a timer runs while suspended.
