Feat: Agent-neutral timeline turns and tools (#1559) - #1600
Agent-neutral timeline attribution (#1559): any known client — Bob first — gets turns, tools and a single main row on GET /v1/sessions/{id}/timeline, instead of host rows only. Attribution is by the canonical client name already recorded on every event (SessionEvent.Client), not by per-agent adapters; Claude Code's subagent tree, returns and jobs are untouched.
Measured before: a Bob session rendered 160 host spans, 0 turns, 0 tools.
Changes
Parser (core/plugins/inferenceparser): chat-completions role:"tool" + tool_call_id request messages now map onto InferenceExtension.ToolResults (only Anthropic tool_result and Responses-API function_call_output did before), so tool spans can close for chat-completions agents. The message keeps its content in Messages (settle's cost math) and carries the id on InferenceMessage.ToolUseID.
Attribution (core/session/timeline/agents.go): agentOf falls back to MainAgent when the event's client is a known agent and no Claude markers are present; unknown clients stay host-only. isSideCall is gated to Claude Code (AgentRole != ""), so a non-Claude client's tool-less side calls (Bob's security/background classifiers) render as turns — real spend, labeled, which feature: Cost per timeline span, and tell the user when an agent needs them #1560's cost-per-span will want.
Turn.Model (omitempty): so premium-ide/security/background turns read apart; agentop's timeline cursor strip names it.
cpex: the two CMF walkers counted a chat-completions tool result twice once the parser recorded it in both Messages and ToolResults; they now skip the message half of a pair the id names.
Docs: docs/session-api.md timeline section and the CLAUDE.md endpoint row — attribution is by known client; returns/jobs remain Claude Code only.
Testing
Red-first tests throughout: parser (TestChatCompletionsToolResultsCarryTheCallID), attribution (TestKnownNonClaudeClientGetsTurnsOnMainRow, TestUnknownClientGetsNoTurns — unknown and nil Client get nothing, no panic), Bob-shaped session (TestBobSessionToolsCloseAndReturnsStayEmpty — tool closes by tool_call_id, returns/jobs stay empty), agentop strip (TestTimelineStrip_NamesTheTurnModel), cpex (TestInferenceToCMFParts_ParserShapedToolResultCountsOnce, TestInferenceToolResultsCustom_ParserShapedToolResultCountsOnce).
The existing Claude Code timeline suite passes unchanged — the regression gate.
Full core and cmd/agentop suites green; gofmt and vet clean.
Deferred (review minors)
pairCalls' doc comment still says "Claude Code inference calls" — now any known client's calls.
Pre-marker Claude Code traffic (AgentRole == "", older CC versions) now attributes via the client fallback and bypasses isSideCall's no-tools rule; its tool-less one-shots become turns. Narrow, arguably an improvement (real spend by a known agent). The progress/recap prompt literals still filter it — they run for every client (fix round 2).
A turn from any client whose last user message quotes Claude's progress/recap prompt text is dropped from the timeline (display-only; the event and cost ledger keep it). Containment would thread the client name into isSideCall; deferred as the same false-positive risk the literal filter has always carried for Claude Code traffic.
The cursor strip names only the first covering turn's model when turns overlap in one cell.
Bob-on-Ollama sessions show no inference parses at all (localhost:11434) — likely Ollama native-API parser coverage; separate issue, spec'd as a non-goal here.
The parser records it in both Messages (with its tool_call_id on the
message) and ToolResults; the cpex walkers assumed the two disjoint and
emitted it twice, inflating tool_result_count.

Walkthrough
The timeline now attributes turns from known clients to a main row and labels turns with their model. Chat-completions tool results carry call IDs for matching. The cursor strip displays a turn’s model when the cursor falls within that turn.

Chat-completions parsing records tool_call_id on tool messages and adds results with nonempty IDs. CMF processing skips the duplicate message representation when it emits the result from ToolResults. Tests check ID and content retention and single counting.
Known clients map to the main row, and turns carry their requested model. Tool-less calls from clients without an agent role are retained; unknown or missing clients produce no turns. Tests cover attribution and tool-span closure. Documentation and design materials describe the client and Claude Code-specific behavior.
Show turn models in the cursor strip cmd/agentop/tui/timeline_pane.go, cmd/agentop/tui/timeline_pane_test.go, docs/superpowers/plans/2026-10-30-agent-neutral-timeline.md
For no-tool cells, the cursor strip adds the model of the first matching turn to its status text. A test checks the model label.
Timelines can show incorrect models or spurious jobs, and converted tool results can be out of order. Tool timing accuracy also needs transcript-backed verification. These are bounded risks to address or accept before merging.

TestBobSessionToolsCloseAndReturnsStayEmpty places the tool result in the request at t=12 and asserts that the span ends at t=12. It has no independent tool-completion time, so it can pass even when the result-bearing request arrives substantially after completion. The existing captured fixture is Claude Code and does not check the requested Codex/Pi timing tolerance. Add transcript-backed coverage that compares each span end with an independently recorded completion time.

Select the model for the request named by the cursor strip.
When a turn starts after cell.from and ends within the same cell, cellHost can name its request, but this condition cannot show its model. If another turn covers cell.from, the strip can instead show that turn’s model beside the selected request. Match a selected host request to its turn by Seq; when no request is selected, use turn–cell overlap rather than coverage of only cell.from. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve each chat tool result’s message position.
When a non-empty message follows an ID-bearing role: "tool" message, this branch skips the result during the message walk and appends it after all messages. buildCMF preserves that sequence in Message.Content, while AgentExtension.Conversation.History retains the original order. The CMF payload therefore misrepresents the conversation order. Emit the correlated result at its message position and skip its duplicate in ToolResults.

Limit background-job detection to Claude Code.
When a known non-Claude client returns tool text beginning Command running in background with ID: …, buildAgents creates a Job from that text. The new attribution path now reaches the Claude-specific result scan at Lines 110–125. A normal tool result can therefore display a background job that the client never started. Gate that marker interpretation by the request’s client or Claude marker, while keeping the tool result available for span closure. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Summary
Solid, well-scoped change. Attribution by SessionEvent.Client gives Bob (and any other known client) turns and tools without adding per-agent adapters. The parser change pairs chat-completions role:"tool" results by tool_call_id, and the cpex walkers were correctly updated so a result is not counted twice. The Claude Code paths are unchanged. I ran the core/session/timeline, inferenceparser, cpex and pipeline suites locally at 9f782a8, and they all pass.
There is one suggestion worth fixing before Bob sessions are watched live. Now that tool-less classifier calls stay on the main row, they trigger the "agent moved on" heuristics. On a live timeline, a still-running tool or an in-flight main turn gets marked Lost the moment Bob's security/background call fires (details inline, reproduced with a scratch test). Completed sessions are not affected, because the later result closes the tool. The two other comments are nits.
Also, pairCalls' doc comment (agents.go:327) still says "Claude Code inference calls" and "tool-less side calls ... are dropped". You already listed this as deferred, but it is now wrong for both clauses, so I'm noting it here.

suggestion: Keeping a non-Claude client's tool-less calls as turns on the single main row breaks two "the agent moved on" heuristics in buildAgents. Both assume one agent row is sequential:
L204: an unanswered turn followed by a later turn of the same agent is marked Lost.
L225: a tool with no result yet is marked Lost (zero-length, "no result") when lastTurn[agent] is after its start.
Bob's security/background classifier calls run concurrently with the main loop. I checked both cases against the PR's own bobTurn helper:
premium-ide turn emits call_1 (run_shell) at t=10, then a security call at t=11, built at t=30 with no result yet. Result: call_1 has Lost:true, End=Start. The live strip says "no result" for a tool that is still running.
premium-ide request in flight (no response yet), then a background call at t=2. Result: the main turn has Lost:true, zero length.
Once the result-bearing request arrives, the tool closes correctly (endAt takes precedence), so archived/finished sessions look right. The live view, which is the main point for #1559/#1560, will flicker. A related effect: st.prev for main now alternates between classifier and main conversations, so resent can't detect a real main-loop retry across an interleaved classifier call.
One possible fix: compute lastTurn only from turns that carry tools (or skip isSideCall-shaped calls when AgentRole == ""), and leave st.prev unchanged for them. Either way, a regression test along the lines of case 1 would pin it down.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
nit: This second pass over req.Messages could fold into the loop just above it, which already reads msg.ToolCallID. It's one walk instead of two, and the place where the message and its ToolResults twin are created stays in one spot. That matters because the cpex dedup relies on exactly that invariant (a ToolUseID on the message implies an entry in ToolResults).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
nit: Given the concurrency above, a cell is often covered by both a premium-ide turn and a classifier turn. "First covering turn" then depends on order (you already listed this as deferred). Preferring the turn that started latest at or before cell.from, or the non-side-call one, would make the label stable. Fine as a follow-up.
