Summary

Addresses two bugs in the forward proxy's CONNECT path - a server-first protocol (SSH, SMTP) sends its banner before the client speaks. With the TLS bridge on, the proxy peeks the client for five bytes to classify TLS vs opaque, but the client sends nothing until it reads the banner, so the two sides wait on each other forever. The peek now carries the same read deadline sniffHost already uses; a short or empty result falls through to the opaque tunnel.

A client that half-closes its send side after writing the request and then reads the reply gets nothing: the opaque tunnel's copy loop closed both halves as soon as either direction's io.Copy returned. Each direction now CloseWrites the receiving side at EOF and only fully closes once both copies finish.

Fixes #1544

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • CONNECT requests that inspect client traffic for TLS bridging now avoid waiting indefinitely when no initial data arrives, allowing the connection to proceed promptly.
    • Tunnels continue relaying upstream responses after the client finishes sending data, preventing replies from being cut off. They also return when the upstream keeps its write side open, rather than waiting indefinitely for it to close.
    • Server-first responses are delivered promptly, and half-closed connections can continue receiving replies.

Walkthrough

The CONNECT path now bounds the TLS-bridge peek with a read deadline. The tunnel copies both directions concurrently and propagates EOF through half-close when supported. Tests cover server-first banner delivery, replies after client half-close, and tunnel return when the upstream does not half-close.

Explanation

Issue #1544 has two coding objectives. (1) Server-first banner through CONNECT with TLS bridge on: the five-byte classify peek in server.go is bounded by connectSniffTimeout (500 ms, sniff.go), and the read deadline is cleared afterward. Peek errors are ignored, so a short or empty result falls through to the opaque tunnel. The server.go diff could not be read directly. This finding relies on the supplied change summary. (2) Half-close lost in opaque tunnels: transparent.go tunnel() now runs both copies concurrently. Each EOF calls closeWrite on the receiving side, which uses CloseWrite when available. Full close happens only after both copies return or after halfCloseDrainVar (2 s) elapses with one copy still blocked. sniff.go peekedConn.CloseWrite forwards half-close to the wrapped conn, so the sniffed client path also relays half-close. tunnel() still returns both byte counts, so bytesUp, bytesDown, and tunnel teardown are preserved. The added tests in connect_hang_test.go cover the server-first banner, direct half-close, peekedConn half-close, and the bounded return. I did not execute these tests. The 2 s drain counts from the first EOF, not from idle time. A slow reply that runs longer than 2 s after the first EOF is cut off. The issue specifies this bounded-drain design, so this is not a failure.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Changed production code is limited to CONNECT and opaque-tunnel handling: server.go (CONNECT classify peek bound), transparent.go (tunnel half-close relay, drain bound, closeWrite helper), and sniff.go (connectSniffTimeout constant, peekedConn.CloseWrite). Each change maps to an objective in #1544. The new test file covers the same two behaviors and the bounded-return requirement. The package-level halfCloseDrainVar is shrunk by tests, which is a test-support pattern and not unrelated behavior. No unrelated production behavior or unrelated test scope was identified. The server.go diff was not directly readable, so this verdict relies on its supplied summary.

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 7 functions across 4 files.

Reviewed against issue #1544 and verified independently: the issue's own reproduction tests — a server-first banner through the bridge, and a half-closed client reading its reply — fail on main and pass on this branch; the full forwardproxy package is green here. The bounded peek, the CloseWrite relay (including through peekedConn), and the drain-deadline-before-full-close all match what the issue asked for, with the teardown tradeoff documented inline.

One procedural note: the branch is BLOCKED against main — #1593 and #1596 moved the same handleConnect region — so it needs a rebase before merge.

Bounding the peek with sniffTimeout fixes the hang, but a server-first protocol now waits the full 5s for its first byte — #1544 suggested ~500ms to make the delay unnoticeable. Consider a shorter dedicated bound here, or a one-line comment justifying 5s for consistency with sniffHost; through the bridge, SSH currently feels broken-then-working.

halfCloseDrainVar as a package-level var is a workable test seam, but it's read on every teardown while tests mutate it — fine while package tests are sequential; worth a comment saying so.

The fixed drain window truncates a reply that is still streaming.

tunnel gives the second copy a total of halfCloseDrainVar (2 s) after the first copy returns. Bytes that keep flowing do not extend the window. If the window expires, both connections close while the reply is still in progress. A reply that streams for more than 2 s after the request half-close is cut short. Examples are an SMTP server, a database, or a streamed LLM response.

The same cut applies in the reverse direction. If the upstream sends EOF first, a client upload that runs longer than 2 s is cut.

The halfCloseDrainVar comment says the window is "long enough to carry a reply the peer is actively writing." The code does not do this. The tunnel comment says the second copy has the window "to finish on its own; if it stays blocked," which describes an idle peer, not a total time limit.

The truncation is silent. The io.Copy errors are discarded, so the reply ends as if it were complete.

This is a major issue because it affects ordinary replies in the workflow the half-close fix targets. Replace the total deadline with an idle bound. Each copy records its last write time. When the window expires, the code closes both connections only if the other direction has been idle for the whole window. Otherwise it waits for the remaining idle time.

Add sync/atomic to the imports. The idle bound still closes a peer that stays silent for longer than halfCloseDrainVar. A peer that sends a byte before each gap closes the window and keeps the tunnel open. If completion must also have an absolute time limit, add a hard maximum. Add a test in which the reply keeps writing past halfCloseDrainVar. If a fixed cap is intended, change the comments to state that replies longer than the cap are truncated.
