Awesome New Tango Orchestras

A collection of Tango Orchestras that had new releases after the year 2000, play music not too far away from the golden era style and cater to dancers.

Orquesta Típica El Afronte

(Argentina)

"El Afronte Orquesta Típica" transfers the spirit of the dance from tango into the present day, bringing all of the shades and nuances of the tango – from ecstasy and melancholy – into its performances.

The group was founded in 2004, and rapidly went on to make a name for itself in the milonga scene of Buenos Aires. These musicians aren’t content to revel in nostalgia for the past; they are just as keen to bring new developments to the fore.

Orquesta Típica Andariega

La Orquesta Típica Andariega was created in Buenos Aires September 2009 with the idea of making a new danceable tango based on a solid foundation of classic tango.

The orchestra has a repertoire “bien milonguero” – as we say in Spanish – which means that it is a music intimately connected to the milonga and good for dancing! It is a mix between new arrangements of the most popular tangos, waltz, milongas and new tango compositions that preserve the rhythmic and danceable spirit of the Forties and at the same time add the energy of the new tango movement of the millennium.

Quinteto Ángel

The Quinteto Ángelm founded in 2001, has quickly become one of the most well known German tango ensembles and regularly inspires concert-goers and tango dancers all over Europe. With extraordinary personal commitment, the five performers play music that draws its intensity from the apparent contradiction between sustained melancholy and impetuous pulsating power. With their interpretations of traditional Argentine tangos and compositions by Tango Nuevo protagonist Astor Piazzolla, they prove that tango is alive and kicking in Europe too.

Orquesta El Arranque

Orquesta El Arranque is an Argentine tango orchestra formed in Buenos Aires in 1996. Founded by double bassist Ignacio Varchausky and bandoneonist Camilo Ferrero and starting off as a quintet, El Arranque developed a repertoire that was readily embraced by the tango community, and by the end of their first year El Arranque had already performed over 200 shows in Argentine theatres and milongas Artango

Athens Tango Ensemble

(Greece)

Athens Tango Ensemble quintet performs musical masterpieces of the ‘Golden Age’ of Argentinian Tango (1935-1955) as well as compositions by Astor Piazzolla. Athens Tango Ensemble first performed in October 2016 and their music has since then been dearly embraced by the Greek audiences. The have performed in significant festivals and venues in Greece and abroad including Athens Concert Hall, ‘S.N.F.C.C.’ ‘Half Note Jazz Club’ and the Greek National Radio. In October 2018 their first record was released by “General Music” under the title Athens Tango Ensemble containing fifteen musical diamonds that originate from the classical era of Tango music (tango, walz and milonga).

The first typical tango orchestra of Austria, BAND-O-NEON "Orquesta Típica de Tango" was founded in May 1995. The name of the orchestra is related to the characteristic instrument of the tango, the bandoneon.

The repertory consists of the tangos from the classical period (1880-1917), transition period (1917-1935), period of Tango-Nuevo (1935-1948) as well as contemporary works.

Bandonegro

Bandonegro is a world-class tango orchestra, among the most original and recognizable performers of this genre. Beata Söderberg

Conjunto Berretin

Conjunto Berretín was formed in 2001 under the direction of bandoneón player, Alex Krebs, in Portland, Oregon. Conjunto Berretín plays tango dance music and can range in configuration from duo to quartet, sextet, nonet and 12-piece orquesta típica.

El Caburé

El grupo intenta seguir la línea de formaciones como el sexteto de los hermanos De Caro o más cercano en el tiempo al Quinteto Real, bajo la dirección del maestro Horacio Salgán, dando énfasis en la distribución de la melodía por todos los instrumentos de la agrupación, en este caso un cuarteto.

El Cachivache

El Cachivache is a statement, an electric scream from Buenos Aires, blending tango tradition with the urgency of punk and the pulse of electronica.

Energetic, visceral, and undeniably authentic. They are a reference for the new tango scene with a suburban milonga spirit and contemporary language.

Some call them “modern buffoons”, while others describe their music as “Tango Punk”, and both are true. El Cachivache delivers their music in a vigorous manner with a strong dose of humor, mixing traditional tango with a post-punk look, which simultaneously frightens and attracts the audience. Witty song introductions emerged with the music, livening up already energetic performances.

Collectif Roulotte Tango

(France)

Founded in 2002 by Julien Blondel, the Roulotte Tango collective explores the music of the Rio de la Plata to share with the public a captivating dialogue between sounds and bodies. It produces musical ensembles dedicated to different repertoires, as well as shows around tango culture.

Color Tango

(Argentina)

The orchestra COLOR TANGO is, since 1990, one of the key figures of the tango scene. From its beginnings and uninterruptedly, has performed in the most important theatres and tango festivals worldwide and has received numerous awards.

Their repertoire consists of own compositions and arrangements, plus interpretations of great successes of the orchestra of Osvaldo Pugliese. Roberto Álvarez, founding director of Color Tango, who was first bandoneon player and arranger of Maestro Pugliese’s orchestra for many years, has managed to lead the Color Tango orchestra to be considered the main successor of the style and imprint of the great maestro Pugliese, characterized by its strength and expressiveness.

Sexteto Cristal

Sexteto Cristal keeps the beautiful sound of almost forgotten musical tradition of tango alive. The desire of tangueros for the danceable "classics" of all time was the first inspiration and horizon of the sextet on the way to create their own style and repertoire. You can hear the original sound of different orchestras in their interpretation, which mirrors the very special melodious phrasing, dramatic articulation and powerful rhythm of the golden age of tango. Orquesta Escuela De Tango

La Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce es una iniciativa pedagógica creada en el 2000, por el Ministerio de Cultura del Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires que propicia la reunión de distintas generaciones de músicos y posibilita el acercamiento del legado cultural de los grandes maestros del género a los jóvenes intérpretes. Desde el año 2017, y bajo la dirección artística de Ignacio Varchausky y la dirección musical del maestro Víctor Lavallén, la DGEART tiene el orgullo de contar con la Orquesta Escuela entre sus formaciones.

With a focus on the interpretation of original compositions, the Fabio Hager Sexteto has been consolidated with a new generation of tangos that leaves no one indifferent.

Sexteto Fantasma

El Sexteto Fantasma is among the most important orchestras of the new wave of Argentine Tango. Established in the circuit of porteño and European milongas, they are often found playing at the historic La Viruta milonga, as well as at Salón Canning or the mythical Morán popular milonga. The Sexteto Fantasma is based on a particular sound that is provided by its formation. The inclusion of the trumpet (in homage to Canaro, the first to include this sound in a Tango formation) and the jazz guitar provide a unique touch. Their own compositions are recorded by different current groups and danced in countless milongas around the world. Their versions of classic milonguero songs burst onto the dance floor with freshness and a mischievous rhythm.

The orchestra was born in 2012 as part of the project to carry out a milonga, where they consolidated playing every Tuesday in the Almagro neighborhood, and they continue to maintain the milonga with live music after more than ten years. They have released 3 albums

Fernando Serrano

Artist of Argentine origin. Teacher, Choreographer, Professional Dancer, Musician and Producer. He travels intensely and divides his life between Argentina and Italy where he directs the Tango Allegria Cultural Association dedicated to Spreading Argentine Culture in the World.

Trio Garufa

Trio Garufa is an international ensemble dedicated to performing authentic Argentine music. They have performed across Argentina, Colombia, Europe, Canada and the US at venues such as Yoshi’s Jazz Club, Chicago Symphony Hall, Teatro Leon de Greiff and La Viruta (the largest Tango club in Buenos Aires).
Trio Garufa's repertoire includes Classic Argentine Tangos from the golden era, as well as Argentine Folklore Music, modern Tangos from Piazzolla, Electro-Tangos and original compositions. The Trio's music is exciting, virtuosic, and rooted in the dance.
They have performed extensively in the Milongas (Tango dance clubs) of Buenos Aires.
The group includes Guillermo García, guitar (Argentina) Adrian Jost, bandoneon (Switzerland) and Sascha Jacobsen, string bass (California).

Gente De Tango

(Aregentina)

During 1981, a group of amateur musicians with a common passion for tango began practicing together. They formed to interpret the renowned style of Carlos Di Sarli and became the Orquesta Tipica Gente de Tango. On November 1, 1981, they made their debut on Channel 11 in Buenos Aires. They are the only orchestra in the world performing the repertoire of the Carlos Di Sarli orquesta, thanks to the dedication of Enrique Seone, one of two founding members.

Los Herederos Del Compás

(Argentina)

Since its inception in 2009, Los Herederos del Compás orchestra is one of the most recognized in tango. They build their musical career with international success. continuing the style of Juan D'Arienzo, king of rhythm, king of the milonga.

Hyperion Ensemble

(Italy)

Hyperion Ensemble was founded in 1992 and is passionate about contemporary music, particularly the works of Piazzolla and Traditional Tango music. Over the past 30 years, the ensemble has performed in more than 1200 shows, festivals, and theaters across Europe, Asia, and America, showcasing a diverse repertoire from contemporary to traditional Tango. The group has collaborated with well-known bandoneonists and r egularly participates in prestigious Tango Festivals across Europe. Hyperion Ensemble has also provided musical accompaniment for various international dance shows and has toured in Germany, Bali, Jakarta, Dubai, and the USA. Additionally, the ensemble has performed in historical milongas in Buenos Aires and has shared the stage with renowned dancers worldwide.

La Juan D’Arienzo

Founded in 2012 to recreate the famous Tango style of "El rey del Compás".

Javier Fioramonti

(Argentina)

Javier Fioramonti, born in Santa Fe, Argentina, studied guitar at the National School of Music of Rosario, studied harmony and composition with Lucho Gonzalez (Mercedes Sosa, Chabuca Granda) and later joined his teaching team, doing (amongst other studies) the Berklee College of Music summer courses in Buenos Aires.

Mandragora Tango Orchestra

The "mandragora" is the mandrake root, which grows in Argentina. The group is a quartet (bandoneon/accordian, violin, bass and guitar) that adores the music of Astor Piazzolla but committed to being a dance band, as well. It performs the entire spectrum of Troilo, Gardel, Plaza — 70 or more years of great tangos and milongas. In 2004 it was hired by Theatre De La Jeune Lune for their highly acclaimed production of Piazzolla’s Maria de Buenos Aires.

Sexteto Milonguero

Sexteto Milonguero se formó en 2006 por Javier Di Ciriaco (Cantante). Es una de las orquestas de tango más conocidas, que ha viajado por casi todo el mundo, con una personalidad única e inconfundible.

El estilo del grupo, tiene un comienzo, en esencia, bailable. Y a lo largo de los años, también debido a la diversidad de lugares donde se han presentado en los últimos años, como teatros o festivales en todo el mundo, se han agregado a su extenso repertorio, una variedad de canciones propias, canciones de folklore argentino, etc. Esto ha permitido mostrar y fusionar las diferentes influencias que cada uno de los integrantes del sexteto incluye: música popular argentina, jazz, clásica, rock, etc. ... influencias contemporáneas actuales.

Cuarteto Rotterdam

Brought into being in 2004, the ensemble was named after its birthplace in the Netherlands, where, at that time, the three founding members, Michael Dolak, Susanne Cordula Welsch and Judy Ruks, were studying tango at the Rotterdam Academy for World Music. 2007 they moved together to Germany. Nowadays they are living in Berlin, Stuttgart and Paris.

Cuarteto Rotterdam is tango – full of passion, virtuosity and power – taking into account of more than 100 years of tango history. Being conscious of this tradition, they perform the early and more cheerful kind of tango music from the Guardia Vieja era with such ease that it makes everyone want to dance. In a compact quartet style, they present the Golden Age of tango from the 1940’s with the highlights of the grand orchestras a la Di Sarli, Troilo, D’Arienzo, Pugliese or Salgán. They feel so close to the challenging Tango Nuevo of Astor Piazzolla that the heartfelt melancholy and complexity of this music is noticeable all the time. And they are curious – curious about the new aspects of tango. In searching for the tango of the 21st century, they have included contemporary Argentine and European tango pieces in their concert and dance programme.

The quartet’s classic structure, consisting of bandoneón, violin, piano and double bass, provides a sound experience ranging between tradition and modernity. With their creativity, imagination and experience this small orchestra conjures up a world of tango for all kinds of emotions.

Orquesta Silbando

Silencio Tango Orchestra

The international Tango Orchestra "SILENCIO" was founded 2001 in Europe. After just a few years, the group quickly gained a great reputation playing at tango festivals throughout Europe and is now one of the most famous tango orchestras founded on the European continent, performing in its beginnings together with the beloved bandoneonist Alfredo Marcucci. The profound quality of SILENCIO has been inspired by very pure styles from Carlos Di Sarli, Roberto Biagi to Alfredo Gobbi: the bases of Silencio's authentic sound. The group has developed its own and very personal sound, performing for more than 10 years together. SILENCIO consists of musicians from around the world (Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Germany, Italy, USA), all residing in Europe. The members now live in 8 different cities across the continent (Basel, Zurich, Lyon, Freiburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Madrid, Stockholm). The diversity and quality of their interpretations has gained the admiration of tango-musicians and professionals, and SILENCIO is recognised as one of the 3 best large tango-formations of Europe.

Social Tango Project

Founded and based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Social Tango Project’s mission is to share the social value of dance, celebrating the tango community through live performances, music, and film. Under the artistic direction of Agustina Videla, the company provides “a journey into the heart of Tango” ("La Nación Newspaper"), and aims to inspire individuals to join the dance floor and cultivate tango communities worldwide.

Solo Tango

(Russia)

Solo Tango is a Russian tango orchestra that conquered the world’s Tango Olympus. The band was founded in the summer of 2010 and in incredibly short time has gained international recognition. Solo Tango Orquesta is a winners of XXXV international competition "Castelfidardo Festival Internazionale della fisarmonica" in Italy in the category "Piazzolla ‘s Music" (2010) and 49 Internationaler Akkordeonwettbewerb 2012. It is the only European tango-orchestra that was nominated to the First international “Premios Tango” (Buenos Aires / March 2018).

Cuarteto Soltango

(Germany)

Since it was founded in 2008, the quartet was invited to perform repeatedly at the music festivals of Schleswig-Holstein and Oberstdorf, thereby launching their musical brand at outstanding classical venues. Since then, the four have played at a number of international festivals – most recently at the innovative Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam, the Heidelberg Spring and the Studio Concert series at Bavarian Broadcast, Munich.

Sonder Tango

Sonder Tango is an Argentine tango orchestra composed of Argentine musicians based in Europe, founded in 2019 to share their culture with the world.
They have performed at numerous milongas, concerts, and festivals in Europe and beyond, often sharing the stage with renowned tango dancers.

TangoEsta

(Turkey)

TangEsta (aka Tangueros de Estambul) is a typical tango orchestra that plays tangos mostly from the Golden Era of Argentinian Tango in their original styles. The band which is founded in the late 2012 by Ortaç AYDINOĞLU in Istanbul/Turkey had a long preparation period to explore the musical essence and the differences between styles in tango. The members who were already professional musicians have become tango musicians during this period and thus the band became a professional tango orchestra that is able to play different styles.

Tango No. 9

(USA)

Tango No. 9 explores tango music in all its myriad manifestations — traditional dance music, vocal ballads, tango nuevo, and more recent compositions — bringing an idiosyncratic twist to each. The trio of instruments — violin, piano, and trombone — may seem a far cry from the more traditional orquesta tipica, but the group’s ingenious arrangements capture a much larger sound, while the unorthodox brass instrument adds a new dimension to the mix. The group rebuilds old warhorses like "La Cumparsita" and "El Choclo", and also digs deep into the more obscure nooks and crannies of the tango repertoire to unearth some rare gems. Formado en el año 2014, participo en el musical "Chantecler" , donde se presentaron en Paris, Tokio y en la calle Corrientes en Buenos Aires , en los teatros Alvear, Opera y Astral. Como cuarteto milonguero debutaron en La Viruta, y rápidamente se volvio una de las orquestas favoritas del ambiente. A su vez empezaron a recorrer milongas en el interior de Argentina, Uruguay, Chile y Brasil. Formaron parte de las compañias de Tango de Mora Godoy, Tango Legends y Tango Desire con las cuales recorrieron China , Tailandia, Singapur, Francia, Japon, Uruguay, Chile, España. Realizaron giras a Latinoamerica, Europa, Asia , Australia. Cuenta con mucaqs versiones bailadas por varios campeones mundiales de Tango. Producido y dirigido por el violinista Lucas Furno.

Tango Extremo

Tango Extremo brings a distinctive flavour to the passion and persuasion of the Argentine tango. Since its inception in 2003, the ensemble has made remarkable development, making a big impression on both the Dutch as well as the foreign stages.

The group was formed by violinist Tanya Schaap, who from that moment was the artistic leader behind this ensemble. The line-up is not conventional, but this actually proved to make for various musical opportunities and creativity. It also makes for the group’s unique sound.

Note: there is also an argentinian band named Quinteto Tango Extremo

Tangorra Orquesta Atípica

Hace 15 años que Mikele y Fran Borra crearon Tangorra. Desde sus inicios, la idea de crear un tango contemporáneo, actual y urbano fue buscando sus formas, explorando caminos y abriéndose paso entre los colores del techno alemán, el aprendizaje y la búsqueda de melodías propias y profundas inspiradas en el Tango atemporal, las quejas de bandoneón, y los diferentes elementos que dan forma a su música.

A largo de este recorrido hermoso, fueron sumándose músicos, amigos, colegas que dejaron su huella imborrable en la banda. Porque a esta altura, Tangorra es más una banda que otra cosa. Con lógica de orquesta, pero banda al fin de las que se enriquecen con la creación colectiva, por la rotura del acontecimiento musical, las que celebran lo diferente.

Orquesta Típica Tanturi

Bajo la invocación, mas tanguera imposible, de la figura del maestro Ricardo Tanturi, La Típica Tanturi se introduce en el repertorio del Tango esencial y auténtico. En momentos en el que muchos artistas jóvenes ingresan al tango en una búsqueda que mira hacia afuera del tango, los músicos de "la Tanturi" dirigen sus miradas hacia adentro, buscando, indagando y hasta jugando con soltura en las raíces mismas del genero. Orquesta Típica La Vidú

La Orquesta Típica La Vidú se formó en el año 2005 con el anhelo de darle vida y continuidad al género, reafirmando la condición barrial del origen orillero del tango. Interpreta temas clásicos con arreglos propios y nutren el género con composiciones originales.

Sexteto Visceral

"Our tango orchestra was formed in early 2011. We chose the tango because we consider it the most representative music of the portègne culture, and we think it is fundamental to form groups of young musicians, which promote new and current stylistic research to continue this tradition of more than a century, while renewing the style, sound and artistic proposals. Our aim is to communicate with the tanguero public and attract new listeners who are not used to the style or who consider it obsolete, offering them an identity closer to the current codes of music and modern art."
