Train 41: --path prints the bodies of the hops and routes it names, a new --defs lookup verb with inline alternatives, Rust functions stored in struct fields, Python message handlers named from the repo's own handler rule, a ranked caller hop for error-shaped --for tasks, a Python split-import fix and CI gate de-flaking.

What changes for answers

  • Hop and route bodies on --path (path-hop-body, on-name-v2): a reached 2-hop --path prints its middle hop's body (<bodies of="hops">, hedged via=/cands= when the hop is by name); a longer chain names its first middle hop in next=. An unreached --path prints the bodies of the route it names (<bodies of="route" proven="0">, at most 4, every one a hedge). A Python message framework's posted class names its handlers (via="name-key"; <handler_rule> on a reachable=0 --path), read from the repo's own __init_subclass__. The --for fold follows a one-line wrapper into its callee (follow_of=, at most 3 per answer, <follow_cut>). Route bodies stay off inside --for graph-verb blocks. RIPWIRE_NO_HOP_BODY=1 turns bodies off.
  • --defs=NAME[,NAME…] and <alts> (defs-lookup): up to 16 names in one index load; each definition group with owner-qualified name, kind, file:line, language, class, distinct callers and a pasteable sel= that is proven unique (sel_proven="0" when none), data_defs= for JSON/YAML keys and headings, paging, --json. --path (CLI and MCP path_between) ends with <alts side= of=> listing the other definitions of an endpoint whose pick is not provably unique (at most 16 rows, then next=--defs=); a definition the answer already prints (bound, a listed endpoint, or a printed hop/route body) is not listed again. A JS/TS private member resolves as rows print it (Hono.#dispatch).
  • Rust functions stored in struct fields (fn-slot-2): a function stored by a struct expression, Box/Rc/Arc::new, a field assignment or a path-call registrar that stores its parameter joins the (x.f)( … ) calls through that field: --callers <vr … via= cands=K>, --callees <vs through= slot= targets=K>, --for slot_by= / slot_fields=. self.f is typed; other receivers match by field name (slot-name, ~). None of it is a proven call or counted in count=.
  • Ranked caller hop for error-shaped --for (upward-2hop): a --for task that names an error but no function carries <callers by="rank"> for one narrow-funnel function among its first rows (1–3 callers): 1-hop callers, then at most 4 d="2" rows, next= the whole radius. Byte-identical otherwise (RIPWIRE_NO_CALLER_HOP=1).
  • Python split imports (py-split-marker): a module __getattr__ no longer withholds a renamed-import call to a function the module defines at module scope (cpython: 11 call sites restored, e.g. re.sub, re.compile, platform.system); still undecided when the definition sits under if/try/with/match/a loop, or the module writes globals()[…] / setattr(…).
  • CI gates (ci-flakes-3): memguardcheck B6b follows a crawl-cut index with a grep (answers on any partial index) instead of a find_symbol whose survival depended on directory order; B21 waits for the git-log stream's end marker instead of a 4 s bound; pargatescheck's control arm waits 3 s before looking. Test-only.

Stated floors

  • --defs: the 16-row window can fill with docs/vendored/benchmark definitions; a refused written spelling names no file; each --path re-resolves both endpoints.
  • Python: vars()/locals()/exec/__dict__/sys.modules[__name__].x = are not recognized as dynamic writes.
  • Rust slots: closures, method-call registrars, macros, enum variant fields, inline mod m { … }, use … as renames, out-of-tree crates and std join nothing.
  • Hop bodies: 4–5-hop paths are not reached (next= names the first middle hop); handler rules from a variable argument, factories, @on(...) handlers and class-body handler_name = are not read. In MCP path_between a middle hop inside a for graph-verb block may print twice (no served set there).
  • The ranked caller hop can fire without gain when no function body holds a literal with two task words (fallback seed), and is refused when two same-named classes hold the literal.
  • memguardcheck B23 and the pargatescheck (T) arms stay load-sensitive.

Measured

  • S1 (163 questions): Rule C 127 → 129 (new rule) / 124 → 125 (old), legacy 139 → 142, lower nowhere. hono-12 ✗ → ◐ 6/7 (legacy ✓ 7/7), textual-11 ◐ → ✓ 6/6, htop-14 ◐ → ✓; checked on the composed train head, not only per lane.
  • Large-repo questions (lane measurements): nushell-03 gains a slot row (Rule C 2 → 3 of 4); cockroach-01, terraform-07 and one ninja multi-file question gain one required item each from the ranked caller hop.
  • --impact census (235 answers): byte-identical. cpython pins change only at the 11 restored sites.
  • Versions: parser 259 (rich 260), cache 46, qsnap 24; qschemetrip re-pinned once; 729 gates; 298 compile-time caps. ASan clean on 8 touched gates; full-suite-only gates pass; cockroach peak RSS within run-to-run noise.
  • --quality-delta: gating 0 with two rows acknowledged — pathText complexity 29 → 42 and renderForBodyFold verbosity 83 → 104 (cumulative growth across the hop-body rounds); a follow-up extracts the shared body/route/alts assembly used by the CLI and MCP printers.

Commits: lane merges in order ci-flakes-3 (f76dcb5), defs-lookup (c0314ec), py-split-marker (530d652), fn-slot-2 (72832bc), path-hop-body-fix1 (55263b4), upward-2hop (a98489d); train c8b4981 (versions, qschemetrip re-pin, gate count, LIMITS/TUNING/README), fd75f9c (one showcase regen), f0d4db4 (fragment heading split, text unchanged), 035aa39 (COMMANDS.md), 251ac97 (cppqualcheck count 38 → 39); pre-review 066bdce (<alts> skips definitions a printed body already shows; hopbodycheck R10/R10m), 94c46dc (changelog wording), af8fc25 (the two quality acks).

All eight lanes are maintainer work; no fragment takes an idea from an outside project.

…e key (zero-byte refactor)

model.h kVrSlotLangs: the byFieldName bool becomes VrSlotCallSide {ThroughRows (C family), MemberCallByName (Go)}
and each row names its VrSlotTypeKey {TypedefFacts (C family), PackageDir (Go)}; vrSlotLang() / slotTypeKey() /
slotKeysOwnTypes() read the table. SlotIndex::goTypeKeyOf -> typeKeyOf; the store end, the struct registry
and --for's struct rows ask slotKeysOwnTypes / slotTypeKey instead of the Go call-side bool.

Proof: S1 163 rows byte-identical vs the lane base binary (built_from=f2e6ef1f3); fnslotcheck PASS.

… calls through them

Rust row of kVrSlotLangs (callSide ParenFieldCall, typeKey ModuleType, pathSep "::") and ValueRefFamily::Rust.
ingest_rustslots.h records only what the slot join reads: function-path arguments of path calls (scope 'a',
recvVar = "Owner::name", Self resolved), struct-expression / Box::new / field-assignment stores, registrar
parameter facts ('q'), and `(x.f)( ... )` slot calls ('s', typed for self.f). One cursor walk per file; bare
identifiers are decided at the function's end against every name its patterns bind.

valuerefindex.h: slot_join::TypeKeys dispatches Go (PackageDir) and Rust (RustTypeKeys: the nearest in-tree
struct of that name: file, else crate, else repo-unique); ownedBy = the per-language method-value owner rule;
resolveCallee resolves a path callee through its owner (never the bare last segment); a Rust bare name in
another file resolves to its crate's one, else the repo's only one; narrowFor keys registrars by the callee leaf.

…ule path and the file's use records say

ingest_rustslots.h keeps the written module path: a value's memberVia, a path
callee's recvVar (crate::other::register, std::thread::spawn), a struct type's
memberCtor (crate::a::Cfg); into= still shows the short spelling.

valuerefindex.h slot_join::RustPaths (replaces nearestOf's free function)
reads that path against the file's L3 Rust import records (ing.includes) and
the in-tree crates: std/core/alloc, an out-of-tree crate, a use rename or an
unknown first segment reach nothing; crate::/self::/super::/mod a; a::x
reach the ONE file resolve.h resolveRustImport resolves (this crate's root,
never the writing file's namesake); a path led by an in-tree crate's name
that crate; a bare name with no use: own file, crate, then the repo-unique
tier only when the file uses the defining crate. RustTypeKeys, ownedBy and
resolveName / resolveCallee all read it. kParserVer stays 249 (the lane's
unshipped placeholder).

…y and the walk's header

Value references are path-call arguments and field stores only (method-call
arguments, let g = f, arrays, returns unread: --safe-delete / --dead-code may
miss them); inline-module functions are module members, so a value or
registrar there resolves to nothing; plus the module-path reach rule (F-1/F-2).
docs/LIMITS.md is generated from compile-time caps only, so no line there.

…en by ValueRefWalk::slotTypeKey), TypeKeys as switches

TypeKeys::keyOf / keyOfSymbol switch over VrSlotTypeKey with no default, so
a new type-key kind fails -Werror=switch instead of keying silently as a Go
package directory (the S2 trap). TypedefFacts keys nothing there (its slots
key through the typedef facts; no caller asks). fnslotcheck 89/89.

… --path <handler_rule>)

Python message frameworks dispatch by a name the message class carries
(textual Message.__init_subclass__: cls.handler_name = f"on_{name}").
src/handlerrule.h reads that rule from the repo's own source and keys a
hedged name-key hop at the post site (post_message( Button.Pressed( self ) )
-> on_button_pressed). NameKeyHops serves the post sites beside the
template lookups, so --impact, the --path bridge and near_sink follow them;
a reachable=0 --path from a poster prints <handler_rule> (rule p=, readers
and what they pass the name to, posted classes, handlers <= 16 listed else
count + next=). Gate test/handlerrulecheck.sh (727 gates).

- Line 4239: Remove the --defs entry from kShapingVerbs; paging detection
already handles defsSpec, so this verb should appear only in its appropriate
table.

lookupDefs proves sel= for the first kDefRowsCap + 1 sorted rows only; with two or more rows skipped above (the bound definition and an untied
C prototype), the 16th alternative came from row 17 and printed sel="" sel_proven="0". defAltsXml now skips rows with no sel= (next= pages them:
nextOffset follows the printed rows). Red-first: defslookupcheck P3b and P3b next= on the wd/ fixture (18 TS + 1 C definition + an untied header
prototype + a bound w05) fail on af8fc25 and pass here.

…strar (CodeRabbit 4408459928)

A Rust call `spawn( worker )` inside `fn run( spawn: fn( fn() ) )` (or after `let spawn = |f| f()`) resolved its recvVar to the in-tree registrar
`spawn` and printed called_by="fire" via="slot". The pending row now carries the bare callee; finishFn clears recvVar when the enclosing function binds it.
The argument row still prints (the function is used as a value): dropping it would hide a real use from --dead-code / --safe-delete.
Red-first: fnslotcheck N16/N16b on fnslotrust2 (worker_param_callee, worker_local_callee) printed called_by on af8fc25; no kParserVer bump (259 is unreleased).

…59933)

The embedded chk.py ran xmllint unguarded: a missing binary raised FileNotFoundError and aborted the gate before X3 and the exit. It now checks shutil.which and prints the same SKIP line the shell X2 arm prints.

…nion (CodeRabbit 4408459940)

bind only required tsPrivHelper, so a union that dropped the other class's #dispatch still passed. A second bind line now requires tsOtherPrivHelper.

forTaskIsQuestion listed does/do/is/are/can but not did/could/should/would/will/was/were/has/have, so 'Did the manifest syntax error ...' with no ? took the statement fallback seed when no body literal matched. The sibling auxiliaries are openers now. Red-first: forcallerhopcheck R15b (nine openers, each premise-checked on the rank fixture) printed a <callers by="rank"> hop on af8fc25 and none here. None of the 163 stored S1 first-call argv starts a --for task with these words and no ?, so no S1 answer can move.

…692571864 nitpick)

--defs is an honorsPaging() member, so noticeShapingFlagIgnored returns before selectedShapingVerb is read; the table header says a verb holds a row in one table, never both. shapingflagcheck (C) pins both halves: no --defs row in kShapingVerbs, and --defs --max-tokens=200 still refuses without the not-read notice (no behaviour moves).

Thanks for the review. All six inline comments and the one review-body nitpick were checked against the code. Six are fixed (five inline comments and the nitpick) and one is not a bug; the fixes are the commits after af8fc25, pushed to this PR's branch together:

comment verdict commit
src/defslookup.h (4408459903): <alts> could print a row with an empty sel= fixed: only rows whose sel= was computed are printed, the rest page through next= d6b89bc
src/forcallerhop.h (4408459921): a yes/no question without ? fixed: did, could, should, would, will, was, were, has, have open a question eee47f9
src/forcallerhop.h (4408459926): unreadable ranked-seed source not a bug: an unreadable file is "no evidence" at nine sibling read sites, and the ranked hop is already labelled a lead by rank none
src/ingest_rustslots.h (4408459928): a bare callee the function binds fixed: it no longer resolves to the in-tree registrar of that name; the argument row still prints fd8cf7d
test/hopbodycheck.sh (4408459933): unguarded xmllint fixed: skips like the shell arm 4088236
test/writtenspellingcheck.sh (4408459940): bare #dispatch selector fixed: both callees are asserted 171c574
src/cli.h nitpick (review 5692571864): --defs row in kShapingVerbs fixed: row removed, the invariant is pinned in shapingflagcheck 492d148

Every behaviour fix was red before the change (the new arms fail on af8fc25) and green after. One stored answer changes: kysely-14's <alts> drops the row past the window (7,393 → 7,171 B, same grade). 32 sampled first calls and the 235-answer --impact census are byte-identical to af8fc25.

CHANGELOG summary and README Latest line and release paragraph lead with the
honesty items (hedged or declined answers, --path bodies), then --defs and
owner-named rows, then language specifics; "trains" wording replaced by merged
batches (#424 to #463). Credits added: @hnipps (#228, fixed by #437) and
@s0undt3ch (#305, partly fixed by #431) in the Thanks lines, the #437 heading
names its reporter, a small #431 entry credits @liziye627-design, and the
#397 entry carries a thanks tag.

No logic changes.
