WalkthroughMCV runtime images now run as ChangesMCV container hardening
Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The container now runs Buildah as a non-root user with VFS storage instead of requiring privileged mode, but the documented writable mounts can fail on SELinux-enforcing hosts without proper labels, and the storage-permission guidance is overly permissive. Merge should wait for the mount-label and permission guidance to be corrected or explicitly accepted by the owner. Suggested reviewers: 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 5✅ Passed checks (5 passed)

kernel.apparmor_restrict_unprivileged_userns=0 only as an explicit,
security-weaker fallback. Prefer and document a scoped AppArmor profile granting
userns, permission to the required runtime, and clearly note the global sysctl

Podman volume mount :U option recursively chown source directory :Z ro documentation
💡 Result:
In Podman, the volume mount options:U,:Z, and:ro serve distinct purposes and can be combined to manage file ownership, SELinux labeling, and access permissions [1][2][3].:U Option (Recursively Chown) The:U suffix instructs Podman to recursively change the owner and group of the source volume on the host to match the UID and GID of the user running inside the container [1][3]. This is particularly useful in rootless environments to ensure the containerized process has the necessary permissions to access host-mounted files [4]. Be aware that because this process involves recursively walking the file system and changing ownership on every file, it can significantly delay container startup if the volume contains a large number of inodes [1][3].:Z Option (Private SELinux Relabeling) The:Z suffix is used to set SELinux labels on the volume [5][3]. It labels the volume content with a private, unshared label, meaning only the specific container instance will have access to it [5][3]. Like the:U option, this performs a recursive walk of the file system to update labels on each file, which can also impact startup time for large volumes [3].:ro Option (Read-Only) The:ro option mounts the volume in read-only mode, preventing the container from modifying the contents [2][6]. Combining Options You can combine these options by separating them with commas (e.g.,:U,Z,ro) [7]. When used together, Podman will apply all specified behaviors: it will recursively chown the files for ownership mapping (:U), apply a private SELinux label (:Z), and restrict the container to read-only access (:ro) [1][2][3]. Summary of Behavior -:U: Recursive chown (maps container UID/GID to host) [1][3]. -:Z: Recursive SELinux relabel (private access) [5][3]. -:ro: Read-only access [2][6]. Note: For large volumes, both:U and:Z cause startup latency due to the recursive file system operations required [1][3].

Limit :U to writable output paths.
:U recursively changes ownership of the ${GITHUB_WORKSPACE} mount. The workflow repeats this walk for five images, which can delay startup and leave the checkout owned by the container UID. Mount the source read-only and apply :Z,U only to ${GITHUB_WORKSPACE}/.mcv-out.

#169 Adds push support to MCV, so there will not need to be the out file and the ":U" will be dropped. So deferring to that PR to address this issue.

This documentation remains invalid until #172 merges and publishes that tag. I will keep this finding open pending that change.

Tested the locally built quay.io/gkm/mcv:unified image on an NVIDIA Tesla T4 (driver 590.48.01). The image does not honor the documented UID 1000 contract:
$ podman run --rm --entrypoint id quay.io/gkm/mcv:unified
uid=1001(appuser) gid=1000(ubuntu) groups=1000(ubuntu)
Please fix the useradd fallback so nvidia/unified actually run as UID 1000, and align the Docker --user examples with that storage layout. Inline notes below.

UID 1000 is not assigned on this Ubuntu 24.04 CUDA image.
Verified against a locally built :unified image on a Tesla T4 host:
$ podman run --rm --entrypoint id quay.io/gkm/mcv:unified
uid=1001(appuser) gid=1000(ubuntu) groups=1000(ubuntu)
nvcr.io/nvidia/cuda:12.6.3-base-ubuntu24.04 already has ubuntu at UID/GID 1000, so useradd -u 1000 fails and the fallback useradd -g 1000 … appuser (no -u 1000) creates UID 1001. The leftover ubuntu account still owns UID 1000, so K8s runAsUser: 1000 would enter that account, not appuser.
The same snippet is copied into mcv-nvidia (below) and mcv-minimal. Please fail the build if UID 1000 is not appuser — e.g. userdel -r ubuntu first, then useradd -u 1000 with no fallback that drops -u. A RUN test "$(id -u appuser)" = 1000 assertion would have caught this.
| RUN (groupadd -g 1000 appgroup 2>/dev/null || true) && \ | ||

Same UID 1000 fallback as mcv-unified. This stage is also Ubuntu 24.04 CUDA, so ubuntu already occupies UID 1000 and appuser lands on 1001. Please share one user-creation path across all three stages and assert id -u appuser is 1000.

runAsUser: 1000 currently lands on the leftover ubuntu user, not appuser (see the Containerfile comment).
supplementalGroups is also in the wrong place: it is a pod-level field (spec.template.spec.securityContext). Uncommenting it here under the container securityContext is a silent no-op. The Job example above already documents this correctly — please move this comment (and any real supplementalGroups) to a pod-level securityContext.

Two issues with this Docker example:
-
--user $(id -u):$(id -g)vs baked Buildah storage.storage.confpins graphroot to/home/appuser/.local/share/containers/.... That directory is owned by whatever UIDappuseractually got (today 1001 on:unified). GitHub-hosted runners are typically UID 1001 as the host user, which still will not match after you fix the image to UID 1000. Prefer--user 1000:1000plus a cache dir writable by 1000, or put graphroot on the bind mount //tmp. -
Rootful
docker.sockis host-admin. A read-write/var/run/docker.sockmount can start privileged containers and mount host paths.--userdoes not reduce Docker API power. Please warn here (prefer rootless Podman, a rootless socket, or an isolated runner).

--user $(id -u):$(id -g) only works when the host UID matches the in-image appuser UID and can write /home/appuser/.local/share/containers. After fixing the Containerfile to UID 1000, this still fails for any host whose UID is not 1000 (common on CI).

golangci-lint@latest moved to v2.13.0 which requires go v1.26, but GKM is still at v1.25.5. Pin golangci-lint to v2.12.0 to allow to continue working. There was some flakiness around MCV image building, "make tidy-vendor" would sometimes fails. Updated the mcv/images/Containerfile to copy go.mod/go.sum first so the vendor layer is cached independently of source changes — it only re-runs when the dependency manifest changes. Then use a BuildKit cache mount for the Go module proxy cache so that modules already fetched on a prior run survive transient proxy.golang.org failures. Problem: MCV uses buildah internally to build/push OCI cache images. Buildah traditionally requires `--privileged` because it needs to mount overlay filesystems and run as root. This is a security concern in production Kubernetes and CI environments. What changed in the Containerfile 1. Storage driver: FUSE/overlay → VFS (redhat-et#173) driver="vfs" FUSE-overlayfs requires either --privileged or CAP_SYS_ADMIN + /dev/fuse access. VFS is a naive copy-based storage driver that needs no special kernel capabilities. It's slower (copies instead of overlays), but MCV only builds small single-layer cache images, so the performance difference is negligible. 2. Non-root user (UID/GID 1000) ``` RUN groupadd -g 1000 appgroup && \ useradd -u 1000 -g appgroup -m -s /bin/bash appuser USER appuser ``` Running as root inside the container is unnecessary and a security risk. The fixed UID/GID 1000 also makes volume mount permissions predictable. Runtime flags: Podman vs Docker Podman: `podman run -v /path/to/cache:/tests:Z,U <image> ...` - :Z — relabels the volume for SELinux (private to this container) - :U — remaps the volume ownership to match the in-container user (UID 1000). Podman runs rootless with user namespaces, so the host UID and container UID differ. :U bridges that gap so appuser can read/write the mount. You only need :Z,U on volumes the container needs to write to (the cache output directory). Read-only mounts like model files only need :Z (or :ro,Z). Docker: ``` docker run --user $(id -u):$(id -g) \ --security-opt seccomp=unconfined \ --security-opt apparmor=unconfined \ -v /path/to/cache:/tests:Z \ <image> ... ``` - `--user $(id -u):$(id -g)` — Docker doesn't have Podman's user-namespace remapping, so you explicitly run as your host UID/GID to match volume ownership. Without this, the container runs as UID 1000 (appuser) which may not own the host-side mount. - `--security-opt seccomp=unconfined` — buildah makes syscalls (like mount, unshare) that Docker's default seccomp profile blocks. Disabling seccomp allows these without granting full --privileged. - `--security-opt apparmor=unconfined` — on Ubuntu (base container), AppArmor's default Docker profile also blocks some of buildah's mount/namespace operations. Disabling it is the minimal escalation needed. - `:Z` — SELinux relabeling, same as Podman. No :U needed because --user handles ownership directly. Why the difference Podman is rootless-native — it uses user namespaces automatically, so :U remaps ownership transparently. Docker doesn't do user-namespace remapping by default, so you need --user to align UIDs, and --security-opt to relax seccomp/AppArmor enough for buildah's syscalls without going full --privileged. What you're NOT granting Neither approach uses --privileged. The container does NOT get: - Full device access - CAP_SYS_ADMIN - Host PID/network namespace - Write access to /dev, /proc, /sys It's a targeted relaxation: let buildah do its mounts and namespace operations, nothing more.
