Closes #111

  • Implement __getstate__ and __setstate__ methods for the resource-holding class ForestInferenceImpl.
  • Move infer_device function to a separate submodule to avoid cyclic imports.
  • Write a unit test to test fallback behavior for device selection after unpickling.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Classifier and regressor models can now be saved and restored using pickle, preserving their configuration and predictions.
    • Restored models select an available GPU when possible and fall back to CPU when CUDA is unavailable. When the saved GPU is no longer available, restoration uses an available GPU device.

The change moves CUDA device detection and inference helpers into detail.device_infer and adds pickle state support for ForestInferenceImpl. Deserialization selects an available GPU or falls back to CPU. Tests cover model round trips and device-selection cases.

Changes: ForestInference pickle support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared device inference
python/nvforest/nvforest/detail/device_infer.py, python/nvforest/nvforest/_forest_inference.py, python/nvforest/nvforest/_factory.py
CUDA detection and device selection move to detail.device_infer. _factory.py imports infer_device from the new module.
Pickle state and device-aware restoration
python/nvforest/nvforest/detail/forest_inference.pyx, python/nvforest/tests/test_pickle.py
ForestInferenceImpl saves model settings and Treelite bytes, selects a device during restoration, and rebuilds the native model. Tests cover CPU and GPU round trips, unavailable saved GPU IDs, and CUDA-unavailable fallback to CPU.

Pickle restoration works for the main round trips, but two fallback cases are unsafe. Restoring onto a different GPU layout can mix GPU memory across devices at prediction time. After a GPU-to-CPU fallback, calling optimize() can fail on a host with no GPU. These should be fixed before merging.

Explanation

Issue #111 requires pickle support for nvForest objects. ForestInferenceImpl.__getstate__ stores model bytes and configuration. __setstate__ rebuilds the native model and selects an available device, including GPU-ID and CPU fallback. test_pickle.py covers CPU and GPU round trips and fallback behavior.

Document the nullable CPU device ID.

infer_device("cpu", None) returns ("cpu", None), but the return annotation promises an int. Change the return annotation to include None, and add a NumPy-style docstring that describes the CPU result. As per path instructions, “Check for docstrings on public functions/classes” and “Verify type hints are present and accurate.”

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Allocate prediction arrays on the restored model’s GPU.

If the saved GPU ID is unavailable and GPU 1 is current, this fallback builds the model and stream on GPU 0. Restoration then makes GPU 1 current again. ForestInference_impl.predict uses cp.asarray and cp.empty without selecting GPU 0, so it can pass GPU 1 pointers to inference using the GPU 0 stream. Keep prediction allocations and execution on self.device_id, or otherwise preserve the selected-device invariant after restoration. The current-device behavior is documented by CUDA and CuPy. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Restore a CPU wrapper when a GPU model falls back to CPU.

This branch rebuilds ForestInferenceImpl on the CPU, but unpickling retains the original GPUForestInferenceClassifier or GPUForestInferenceRegressor wrapper. A subsequent optimize() creates a new instance through that GPU class, whose constructor sets device="gpu" even though the restored forest has device_id=-1. Thus prediction can pass while optimization fails on the no-GPU host. Restore the outer object through device-aware construction, and cover optimize() after fallback. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
