Before: OcsfAuditConfig had two independent optional fields, destination and exporters, and a Default that set neither. A value with no output, both outputs or an empty exporter list could exist until the emitter refused it.

After: OcsfAuditConfig holds one output: OutputSelection, either a destination or an ExporterList that TryFrom<Vec<OcsfExporterConfig>> refuses to build empty, and no longer implements Default. Missing, conflicting, null-only and empty selections fail while the block is parsed. YAML is unchanged: destination: and exporters: keep their keys, unknown-field rejection and serialized shape.

The block deserializes through a private wire struct whose checked conversion into OcsfAuditConfig is the one place an entry that selects no single output is refused. OcsfAuditConfig::new(output) builds a config in code with the documented defaults, which is the replacement for the removed Default; the CHANGELOG entry documents the break.

How: config.rs gains OutputSelection, ExporterList, OutputSelectionError (thiserror) and the private WireConfig with #[serde(into, try_from)]; the emitter fails an entry with no config: block with the existing missing-output message; lib.rs re-exports the new types. Tests in config.rs cover programmatic construction, both variants, empty and conflicting lists, nulls beside a set key, unknown keys and wire round-trips of both shapes. The emitter's struct_defaults_match_an_empty_config_block test went with Default; the sink still refuses an absent, silent or null-only block.

Checked locally: cargo fmt --all -- --check, cargo clippy -p praxis-policy-plugin-ocsf-audit --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings, cargo test -p praxis-policy-plugin-ocsf-audit --all-features (76 unit tests, 2 doctests), RUSTDOCFLAGS="-D warnings" cargo doc -p praxis-policy-plugin-ocsf-audit --no-deps, cargo check --workspace --all-targets --all-features. Production code added is under 200 lines.

Closes #264

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Breaking Changes
    • Rust callers must now choose exactly one audit output: a destination or a nonempty exporter list. The configuration no longer provides a default.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid configurations are rejected, including those with no output, conflicting outputs, or an empty exporter list. Explicit null output values are treated as absent.
  • Compatibility
    • YAML keys and serialized configuration shape remain unchanged.

OcsfAuditConfig carried destination and exporters as two independent
optional fields, so a value with no output, both outputs or an empty
list could exist until the emitter refused it. The two fields are now
one output: OutputSelection, either a destination or an ExporterList
that TryFrom<Vec<_>> refuses to build empty, and the struct no longer
implements Default. The config block is read through a private wire
struct, so the YAML keys, unknown-field rejection and serialized shape
are unchanged; missing, conflicting, null-only and empty selections
fail while the block is parsed, and an entry with no config block fails
with the same message as before. OcsfAuditConfig::new builds a config
in code from an output and the documented defaults.

Walkthrough

OcsfAuditConfig now carries one OutputSelection and no longer implements Default. Deserialization retains the existing YAML keys but rejects missing, conflicting, null-only, and empty selections. The emitter reports an error when its config is absent.

Changes: OCSF audit output selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Public output selection API
reference/plugins/ocsf-audit/src/config.rs, reference/plugins/ocsf-audit/src/lib.rs, reference/plugins/ocsf-audit/Cargo.toml, CHANGELOG.md
OcsfAuditConfig now takes an OutputSelection. ExporterList rejects empty lists, and the crate re-exports the new public types. The changelog records the API change.
Wire format validation
reference/plugins/ocsf-audit/src/config.rs
A private wire type retains the destination and exporters keys. Deserialization rejects missing, conflicting, and empty selections. Serialization emits only the selected key. Tests cover validation and round trips.
Emitter configuration handling
reference/plugins/ocsf-audit/src/emitter.rs
Emitter construction reports a missing output selection when the config is absent. Tests cover absent config and null output keys.

Review follow-up. The emitter parses an absent config block as an empty
one, so every entry without an output fails through the same path with
the same message. OcsfAuditConfig::build_exporters, a one-line delegate
to OutputSelection::build_exporters, is gone; TracingTag joins the crate
root exports so the ExporterList doctest builds from root paths. The
config tests lose a module-wide lint suppression in favour of Value::get,
carry a message on every assertion, and keep their helpers under the
Test Utilities separator; three emitter tests that repeated them are
removed. Rustdoc and the CHANGELOG entry state the contract only.
